I Chainsawed the House + She’s Trippin Out

This content was created by Victor Justin Rhodes. This content was uploaded by Victor Justin Rhodes. This is a YouTube renovation/demolition vlog titled "I Chainsawed the House + She’s Trippin Out" (created 2023-05-04). The excerpt captures a multi-speaker, hands-on demo of a house remodel: participants labeled SPEAKER A, B, C, F, plus named contributors Rebecca, Randolph and others, discuss removing a coal room/door, dealing with frozen/insulated panels, AC and electrical access, removing a chimney, framing and roof work, measurements, reuse of materials, cost estimates (~$64,000), mold and walk-in cooler plans, and family/history remarks about the house. The tone is conversational and practical as the group coordinates tools, demolition steps, and design choices.
Chapters
We're going at the coal room, fellas. We are going to try to save that door.
We were going to take the door off and then take the frame off.
Yeah, okay.
Yeah, here, this is a 3.
Small enough?
We'll try.
Can't get this bowl off, right, because of this hinge. What have you found? Oh my, that's what I found! What is that? Josiah, you're crazy!
Brad, you have to get that little thing off the dish.
Morning, Randolph. Looks like it's going around, just injury and sickness.
I think I'm back now for a good spell.
Good. Getting rid of our satellite. I don't think we're ever getting it back. Rebecca, how we gonna watch the World Cup?
Hopefully they'll have a streaming option.
Randolph getting our internet downstairs. Hand me that mallet right there. Yep, there you go. You got this. Toolbox tricks. This air conditioner, which will only go down to 60, to thinking it's not 60 yet, and we can get this down to as low as 36 with just a window unit air conditioning.
Move it.
Yeah, there it goes.
Turn it off. Super easy to get on our roof now. —now.
Doesn't look like anything's holding it on this side. It's not budging. Keep chipping away at the foam. Let's see if it budges now.
Not really.
So can we budge the wall? This is all coming out. Oh wow. Do we not have enough juice in the battery? We won't be able to pull this off though because this electrical panel panel Even Randolph can't get that out.
I got the screws. There was two screws in it.
Yeah, and it's supposed to pull out.
Oh, ain't nothing else holding. Be able to come out in the morning if this ice melts right here.
Oh, you think it's the ice stopping it? It's frozen to the ice, kind of make it swell up. There's some ice right there. Maybe it's swollen up. Randolph figured it out. No AC. Coal room's been a doozy, huh guys? Jason, so the land put this together well.
That feels like progress.
Yeah, but there's multiple sheets. Yeah, two of them. Let's take this wall out. The framer He's coming in 15 minutes. See how much we can get done before he gets here. She's gonna pull nails. Save it for the, uh, the peeper bar. Not all gonna be that easy though. There's gonna be some that need to be hammered out. I'll keep beating on them here.
This is just an estimate. You're going to come in below that, right? I'm gonna try.
I don't, I don't want to see it.
It says $64,000. Okay, that's a pretty good number.
Okay, you want to talk to him about this chimney while we're standing out here?
Something to talk about.
We're kind of thinking about taking that out.
The reason we were thinking about it is because, well, one, it's—
one, at least it's prone to leak.
That would be the time to do it. That's what we're thinking. And I'm assuming it's older, so it's true masonry.
This is '94. Yeah, it is.
I mean, usually the easiest way is take that excavator and just pull it over. That's what we did up there.
I had one, we got rid of it.
We don't have the clearance out front to do, you know, like— I can— I got plenty of masonry buddies. I'll call them and see maybe what the best technique would be. All right. Uh, I mean, the quickest, simplest way would be to go to the ground and then you just bust up the pieces and haul it out of here.
That might be worth it. We'd only be breaking that concrete there, maybe.
Yeah, I mean, it's beautiful, but it's just so big. Oh, it's huge.
It's just not really economical for what you're doing. I mean, you don't need a unit that big.
I'd rather have a window, and then I can see my garden.
Were you planning on taking it all out?
What's that? Well, when we take the roof off, we're gonna have to redo—
Well, this morning I got up early and was thinking about a lot of things. We take it all off, unhook it, like if you did like 20 foot at a time, take all the trusses down there, and then, then we could do whatever we wanted.
In a perfect world, the studs would stack on top of the joists, but yeah, you know, but see, like right here, you know, I think the cripple would be on top of the, you know, there. But I'm more afraid of taking the whole wall off. Yeah. Because then we're like, oh well, yeah, now we've created this issue or this problem.
Okay, are we taking the whole thing off or are we doing the transom windows?
I, I thought we were taking the whole thing.
Okay, no, that's totally fine. You need us to change these plans or do we just tell you to change?
No, you can, you can if you want to take a set and maybe take a red pen. I got one if you need it. And you just kind of etch in what you're thinking or, you know, we did decide that we're replacing these or we reuse using these.
We were going to try to reuse it.
Okay, meeting with Sean and everything is exorbitantly more expensive than we ever could have imagined. Well, it's not Sean, it's like materials.
We were not anticipating doing all of that work with the roof.
We open it up, it's not to code. You got to bring it up to code. Might as well bring it up to 2 feet, right?
I mean, I might as well get the windows that I want.
Yeah, well, take advantage and So you'll be happy because it's— how long you're gonna have this house? For the rest of your life. And then the kids are gonna have it. So it's an investment now. We're blowing our little mortgage budget on this. We have to find other ways. We just camp out in the cabin for 2 years. This is game changer. She's been making the meals, freeing us up to do this work. Ooh, some ribeye with onions. Might be the final wall, pine siding anyway. In here. Framing yet to go, rafters yet to go. These, these added-on rafters were for insulation, and then the framing for a bit. Are you taking the insulation? Yeah, and all this too, I reckon. Well, you must have a big shop.
That's gonna be all the room I got.
What you measuring?
I'm measuring to see what is this. You want me to let go?
No, it's just crooked. It's close enough. Just measure. It won't be off that much. What are you looking— what were you hoping it was? So it's a little over 18 feet, but now it won't be anymore because you're moving that over 2 feet.
Right.
Well, sometimes 16 feet enough wide for a kitchen, but you're basically going to be from this door all the way down back there to that wall, so you're going to be really long. Looks like a commercial kitchen.
Besides, shall we take down this wall?
I think we could try. It's a good attitude. Go grab that ladder. Well, the house was well put together. I never thought I would be chainsawing my house. These boards are too long to go into the dumpster. They're riddled with 40+ nails. And staples.
That was fun. I might not ever get to do that again. What do you think?
Crazy. This is more of what it looked like when we were dating.
Like a skating rink in here. I know. This was designed to be a loft. Now this was always framed, but it was never finished. It was always framed along this road. Yeah, when we were in high school, it was always— it's always my dream to live here. Where were you gonna have us live? You know, I brought that to the table. It was a place for us, wasn't it?
I have no idea where we were gonna live.
Did you like living here? Yeah, it's been good. This was our home right over here. This was the infamous loft. It was always a mess, had 9 freezers and fridges. Over there. We've got no— we're gonna have no more lost space on you. We're gonna have no— we have no excuse now. Did you see what the cold room did? Cold room leaked. I know, started having mold. So we had a couple mold issues.
We had that mold issue over there and this one was starting, but other than that we did not have an issue with mold.
So moving forward, we're getting a legit walk-in cooler. You know, Rebecca, I figured out what this is all about. He goes for the saw. A demo Site is not a place for a 2-year-old. No. Sorry for the beeping. We don't know what's causing this fire alarm to go off. You know what this is really about? This was already built per se when we came into this. My dad was already renting it out. My dad ended up finishing this out. He actually rented it out for a few years before we were getting married, and then when we got married, we came into his design. I'm glad he's not watching this as a real person. Boots, you know I love you. You did not plan this. We got this. We came into this, it was great, and it served us well for 22 years. But now what this is— and I'm sure he did it after Henry. Yeah, we're close to the beeper. I'm sure he did it after Grandpa Henry. And so now we're taking this barn We're keeping the shell, the frame of it, this is the foundation, and then we're making it our own.
This place is so big.
Who knows what the kids will do.
This is tripping me out.
A dream realized will trip you out.
See how this roof does this? It's warped?
No, how it's muddy. Yeah, that is— well, that's what I was thinking also about doing like the darker.
We could get the guys who pressure wash the machines to do this properly.
Well, I'm gonna go with a gray.
I think I'm gonna Okay, gray roof. Okay, as opposed to silver or black?
Yeah, black is not—
so you're gonna do white and gray? That's light and airy. We got one last section on this floor, and it's a tricky one. When we remodeled a long time ago, we thought this was load-bearing. Turns out it's not, so we did a lot of extra work, didn't we? It's probably attached with these little guys. Bruce don't want to drop it because we're afraid we're going to bust through the floor. Tie that beam to the collar. Yep, that'll work. And then we lowered it down. I think if I get the saw on it right there, it'd be a lot easier to get those off. Big Daddy says we can pull it down. I think you can.
And it hits your board.
You mean to do that? Yeah, that's what they wanted. Oh, good.
