I Feel Guilty (3 Days Until Hurricane Helene)

Three days after Hurricane Helene knocked out power for 1.2 million people, the creator manages their family farm with kids named Josiah, Jonah, Sam, Gideon, Henry, and Lily. They coordinate rescues, tend livestock, make butter from stored cream, and wrestle with guilt over sleeping in while everything falls apart. A community potluck soccer game that evening becomes the thing that keeps them going.

I'm inserting a very recent update here. It's Sunday, September 29th. What you're seeing today in today's footage happened a week ago. We had no idea what we were about to go through with this hurricane. We are okay. The lower farm is not. We've got a lot to do, and 1.2 million people are out of power, including us. But we have a generator, we have food supplies, we have fuels. We're looking pretty good. We do have a destroyed road that we were just able to get ourselves out of. We're working on getting Grandma and Grandpa out of— they are okay. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes. Please understand what you see today is from a week ago, and we had no idea what was coming. So, I mean, enjoy the vlog. Power came back on last night briefly but is back off. Estimated time, 8 5:00 AM. I really have to see where we are. He's hooking up this generator. We got a nice Cummins generator. We need water to wash the cows. Do we have enough lines for them? Hey, I think we do. How am I supposed to carry everything out there? I did chores with Josiah for a week. Now I'm doing chores with Jonah for a week. Right off the bat. Going, going, going. I think he wants to get his duties as fast as some of my chores. It just doesn't happen. Jonah, this isn't a race. And if it is, you gotta go through all the checkpoints. John's here. I don't know what Jonah's up to. Let's get the milk cows back over. I don't know why he moved them over here. That's over alfalfa. I want to put it somewhere clean. Look at all the sheep, they're mesmerized by it. They see me offload that over here, we'll see, they'll probably come. Sheep aren't the brightest. There, look at them. Happy day. Oh, you think you found something, didn't you, buddy? Josiah, looks like you didn't get out of it again, huh? Your partner this morning, Sam, he's, he's playing farm games. Oh, I know what they're doing. I wanted to hurry up and get done so you can play till they have to leave. Burrow hog gang right there. This is what they wanted to get done with early for. Yeah, I know why I fell. About nothing. Hey, what are you doing? Are you able to get any water out of there? People are probably getting thirsty. I am. Here's you some to pour, bro. It's 8 o'clock, the power still isn't on. Good job, Gideon. I walk by and through this room. I mean, look how dark even now. Trying to reassure myself here. I missed my kettlebell training this morning. I told myself there's no power. You have to use your iPhone or your flashlight. I said to myself, you're gonna have to use your iPhone or flash, which you could do. My other excuse was, how are you gonna get cleaned up without power? And I feel every one of you is probably gonna say, yeah, that's justifiable, but I feel so guilty for not doing that, sleeping in a little extra 20 minutes, 30 minutes. You're full. You were full. Really? Yes, that's good. That's right. Hey, happy day, Henry. Cream separating day. I want you to look at this cream on this, on this. That's not the normal amount of cream. That's almost— that's a third. That's almost a half. Something about this fall grass or where they are in their lactation, you know, because maybe they didn't get Brad Brack maybe as soon as they normally— of course they didn't— as soon as they normally do. Maybe that— maybe further along in the lactation they get more cream. That's more butter for us. They say with guilt you either need to do two things: one, let it go, or two, change the behavior. Because guilt is bad for you. I've been sitting here thinking, and I let go. Let go. It's too late today. Today I need to let go. You know how I say a lot that do now so your future self will thank you? Like, the screen's separating. This is a pain. My feet are hurting. Tired. My future self is going to thank me though. And I'm eating this butter. Alright, having this ice cream. The power just came on. Live television. The power just came on in real time. That means the party is on tonight. We're hosting a potluck soccer game tonight. Is it too late? Nope. What time is it? I'll let Mama know. Yep, get on your lesson. It's at 9. I'm sitting here thinking, save one time where I actually like continually injured myself in a training. I've never felt badly that I did it. I've always felt good the rest of the day. So I think in this instance, next time I'm going to train with a flashlight if I have to and just deal with the sweat afterwards. So I'm going to change the behavior. And I have no excuse to be tired. I slept a ton last night. Something's wrong. Like, overly too tired. It's been like that for the last several months. I thought it would improve when we came over here. But you made breakfast. I'm like, why am I out of breath climbing those stairs? I usually intermittent fast, but maybe I should eat a little something. Check this out, first time using this. Put it on there, push down. What? Uh-oh, inspector's here. How am I doing? Doing great. I found that if you try to make butter from this cream and it cold, it takes forever for it to churn, like 45 minutes to an hour. But if you let it warm up a bit and even let it go for a little bit a while on the counter, it sours the butter and, um, it's delicious. Jonah, you're so easily distracted. Help me get milk for the pigs. Hey Jonah, you want to go get the trailer and then Salmon come down here and we'll get the coolers in it. Hey wait, you said you knew where the appliance dollies were. Those aren't them. We found the real appliance dollies. That was a snake. It would have bit us. I know I'm passing a mess. It's embarrassing. And I want to know How do you guys keep it clean and still get anything done? I need to go put all that where it goes or have the kids do it. I hear people saying, well, how do the kids do it? Well, I gotta find the kids. Uh, Gideon's in a lesson, Jonah's about to be in a lesson, Josiah's on the mountain building the trail, Lily's helping with Henry, uh, and then I have to tell them and direct them. How do you guys do it? How do you do it and still get things done? Jonah! Jonah! My lesson! Ah, shoot. Oh, you did get the trailer though. Maybe I should just train myself to look for the beauty. I mean, of course I can see a wayward rock. I could see a little bit of— see a bowl out. But I can also see a nicely mown lawn. Grass needs to be mowed around the garden, but you know, we got the garden covered. It's under control. It's a pretty scene right here. Did you hold his head against this? Oh man, the things I'm capturing today on tape. And you, you don't think Hannah will mind you using her boots? You gotta get the, uh, cow head up before the party. The one with the bullet hole through its head. What do our friends think of us? Did they think it was cool or what? I thought it was cool. Yeah, you want to go with me? You're all I got. Everybody's got a cooler? You ready, little bro? What you got? We need to pack them so tight? Not necessarily. Okay, I think we have enough coolers and we're gonna have to carry it all too. Just you and I, so make them smaller. Right here, bird. That's enough, right? We gotta make it all fit too, honey, and all 5 of them. Yeah, you might go ahead and pack them full. We're not gonna fit it all. This is our guest house, the house that's there in our remodel. Austin and Ashley are now staying in the farmhouse, renting it, working for us. We need to get all our freezers in one spot in our house. It'll make all the difference. This is cool. Rebecca froze some collards. We got some broth. We got human placenta. Human? Yeah, human. What are we gonna do with that? She wants to put it under a— plant a tree with it. What? For little bro. Shredded zucchini, frozen peaches, more broth. We have pillowcases of green beans, which might be time to get another pillowcase of green beans. Well, we're still picking fresh ones. I have been putting this project off. I just like to get back on the farm, do farm projects, but this is important. This is very important, I'm telling myself. More zucchini, more collards. Becca and I are leaning towards jamming out a spring garden. It's the easiest garden. And doing more of this preserving and resting later times of the year. Some zucchini, some peaches, some beets, some broccoli. Our future selves are about to thank us. Watch out for crazy little bro. We got to get this whole freezer out, dar. Hopefully we can get this thing out again. I don't remember how we did this. Got it on the trucks already. Probably should and lean it back. You got room to the right? Get rid of the handle. It's too big. That Allen key is too big. I don't have any more Allen keys in my apron. Austin went and got us his Allen key set. Maybe that'd be one reason definitely to take the time to get organized. Wow, it's rubbing. On both sides. Gotta plug it in, babe. Do you need me to get in there, honey? I'm a little thinner than you. Oh. Yeah. Just run an extension cord over to this. Let's get an extension cord. This one isn't terribly long. It's so long! It's so rigid. It'll work until I buy the new one. Oh, definitely, definitely. That's got to be a little janky until we— sticks out too much. Freezer's set up and ready. Help me carry these coolers in there. Hey, this is the trick. Austin taught me a long time ago: clean up as you go. So instead of just chucking these Yetis to the side, go ahead and wipe them down, and eventually I'll learn to plan and accommodate, tidying up as we go. Hopefully all your tools are put away or they're getting blown out. I'm getting an electric leaf blower and every morning I'm gonna back blow out that shop. Okay, last one. That's the sexy part of homesteading. Fridge full of meat, beautiful ones on dinner. We're having a potluck. Big pie. She is making tofu and tempeh Beyond Burgers. Tofu and tempeh, baby. We're grinding down some Beyond Burgers. Bring on the soy. We got the steers, or did you do Stub Muffin? It's whatever was in there. I'll tell you who it is. It's Stub Muffin. Steer that we haven't really named, let's call it Tofu. Yes, yes, I thought about that. And then we have another steer, we'll have Tempeh. And then we can say we're having tofu tonight. People will say, what are you having tonight? We'll tell them tofu, and they'll kind of be disappointed, and then they'll eat it and they'll be like, oh, this ain't tofu, this is good. Rebecca's good at making tofu. La la la la la, let me be free.
