I Finished a 500 LBS Hay Rack, this is what It Looks Like

In this vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes and his family work to complete a massive 500‑lb hay feeder on their farm. The episode walks through the current state of the frame, the challenges of attaching the bottom and sides, and the upcoming task of hanging the structure. A major focus is troubleshooting a clogged burner, where they clean out metal debris, swap tools, and finally achieve a steady hiss. The group discusses hardware needs for the pulley and winch system, debating bolt diameters, lengths, and appropriate fasteners to support the feeder’s weight. Throughout, they intersperse typical farm life moments—milking a cow, cooking potatoes, sharing a meal, and updating on an oral‑surgeon appointment. The host references Joel Salatin’s “Polyface Designs” as a design guide and mentions the need for specific hardware like carabiners, thimbles, and clamps, highlighting sizing issues. The vlog blends instructional DIY content with casual family interaction, offering viewers both practical build guidance and a glimpse into daily farm routines.

Our plan today: let's finish this hay feeder. We've gotten a good ways. We've gotten the frame in. I think we can get the bottoms and the sides up and maybe get going on hanging it, which is probably going to be the hang-up. Bad dad joke. You didn't even laugh. Did you smile? This thing is gonna be heavy. Oh yeah, heavy. Well, hopefully we got the right things for all the pulley stuff, and it shouldn't be a problem. Here we're gonna go for a 2-pot system swill. I only have 1 pot, so it really never gets washed. Now when this one's going, we can have that one inside washing. Pour it in there. Some water in that. Pour it in there. You see the stuff like carrots, potatoes, Onion peels. These things are really tough, and the pigs like it much better if you cook it for a while. Hey, what happened, man? You were once with us and now you're gone. What happened? Is it too cold? All right, well, you stay in and get warm. All right, all right. It is a cold 21 degrees. A little cold for the little guy. Round 1 milking. We got some in that, plus that's 2.5 gallons right there. Phyllis gets restless, so for the second part of her milking, let's get her in the stanchion. She has to crouch down to nurse. Gideon, what have you been doing in here?
Uh, organizing this drawer.
What? Let me see it. Who told you to do that? Grandma? No one. Whoa. Good job, buddy.
I had the idea.
Okay, well, we're done milking. You gonna come help us build a trough?
Sure.
Here, let's check this. There's some potatoes in there. Let's see if they got cooked. No, they're pretty rough. All right, keep it going. Do you guys know why that's not kicking in real high? I drained gas from the line. Now let's start over. What I want to hear is a hiss, man. I want it to be hissing. Ah, it hissed at first. What is the deal? Go ahead. It's just barely going. Try turning it— tried taking this off and back on. Let's put it on like really tight. See, it dies down. I don't know, so weak. I bet you, I bet you this is all clogged up with Sharded metal. Okay, so I'm going to clean out these— this burner. I bet it's kind of over time worn out, and I bet chunks of metal have fallen down in there and blocking it. Try bump— oh yeah, look at all that crud coming out! Holy moly, that's definitely our problem. Look at the stuff coming out of it. Wow. But look, there's a bolt there. Wow, it's all— it's also hot. I bet we can undo that bolt and cleaned it out. No, the adjustable wrench is probably not the tool for the job. Maybe a socket. Wow. Okay, I've got a socket for it, but how are we gonna get down in there with a socket? Arun found us an extension. Holy moly, Arun, who knew we had that?
You got to get it down there better.
Okay, so that's not the right size thing. All right, let's try this size. Okay, everybody cross your fingers.
See, it doesn't get broken.
All right, we've oiled it. Got another— I'm gonna try another socket. Oh yeah, I think I got a movement. Yeah, I think I got it, guys. Hope I didn't break it. I didn't feel like I broke it. I feel like I got it. Look at this. Okay, well now it's Oh, that didn't really get us what we wanted. It didn't take the shield off. Oh yeah, yes! All right, got it back in there, Arun. Let's test this thing. Turn it on. I want to hear a hiss for a long time. Guess what? Check it out. Woo! Now we're cooking. Here we go, guys. We got about 45 minutes today. I go to the oral surgeon, so we gotta leave time for that. Hopefully my jaw has built up enough and it's ready for the implants. What do you think? I'm excited. I think so. But anyway, we gotta finish this up. Let's start with the floors and go up from there. It looks like we got our back on. We're working on our front now, but Aruna's coming, got me the— looks like the bathtub's here, Randolph. I gotta shorten my box. We're gonna have to go in, but before we do, let's check this. Poke that potato. Oh yeah, cooked very well. So we'll turn everything off and just leave it out here. It's cool enough that it'll stay nice, and tomorrow morning that'll be part of the pig's food. Watch, Gideon, this is how you do it. Oh, I would hit it on the shell. Look, hit it on the shell. You got to hit it just right, and then you can pinch it open. Okay, drop it, drop it. Okay, that's enough. You ready for the eggs?
Yeah.
You know what, we don't need to do the eggs yet. Whoops, we need to heat up the meat. Oh, animal-based breakfast, absolutely delicious. Fried eggs, leftover Taco Tuesday meat. How is it, guys?
Good.
And beautiful one is on a doctor's appointment. Hey, we'll see how that goes. I guess it's, it's just routine because I don't think there's anything wrong with her. There she is. What else? Yeah, what's what? Well, it looks like you're doing all right.
No, I'm doing great.
Maybe nothing else.
Yeah, nothing else.
What's up with the doctor?
Oh, it's just a group. It's just a group that she offers.
Oh, once a month. Oh, okay. It wasn't just you and her?
No, no.
So she's just teaching some stuff.
No, it's not teaching. It's more of a— she calls it soul care.
Okay.
So it's more just taking care of like ourselves and like how— and like people can share like what they're going through.
Oh, here we go. You even dressed up.
I did.
Man.
You dressed up and so I thought, well, I can't let you dress up and not me.
I need to go to the oral surgeon more often.
Well, no, you need to dress up more often.
Okay. Yeah, I did a really bad job documenting that process. At the oral surgeon, but, uh, I didn't get any more shots. But anyway, uh, he said the jaw is building up nicely, it's thick enough, but he wants it to get a little taller. So it's not exactly what we wanted to hear. We wanted to schedule the implants, but he said we'll look at it again in a month. We're getting near like snowball coming territory, so I don't know if I'm gonna get it done before like maybe we had hoped, but We'll see.
The last thing you want is you being a surgeon, Mama giving birth, right?
Like, I don't want to be in recovery and she's going to be needing help after the baby, uh, during the baby of course. But the good news is Jonah's— Jonah, you've been working on this?
Yeah, I put this in.
He's put— did he put one more board in?
That's all it called for.
Okay, good deal. Let me make sure you, you did it right. Yeah. All right, so people be wondering where did I get this book. I mean, I've been promoting it quite a bit, but in case you missed it, this is Polyface Designs by Joel Salatin. It's just one of many. Polyfacedesigns.com. And of course I'm leaving links for it down in the description. Pulleys. This is where I'm getting nervous, but I think we can do it. So far so good on these plans. What's the problem?
Can't get that on.
Did you open it? Did you open it all the way?
Yeah.
Oh shoot, that is open all the way.
Here, I have some other carabiners that are really—
Oh, give me a rubber hammer. We'll get that.
No, because you'll break the thread.
Well, what do you have, solution?
I have some carabiners, some pretty big ones.
Really? They gotta be heavy, do you have that?
Oh, they're heavy duty.
Try the rubber mallet while he's gone. Hurry, where is it? Where'd it go? I couldn't find the rubber mallet in time. He's back. I just got a wooden mallet. Let me just try it.
Okay, don't blame me when you break the thread.
I won't, I won't.
It's just bending that.
Hang on, we might have to tighten that up first. He brought us these and, you know, they'll probably work. I just want these to work. I want to be able to link stuff for you guys who are going to build this. And that's why I'm doing this, because look, this O-hook, I got the wrong thing. Oh wow. Those would definitely do it. But how do we— where'd you get those though?
I didn't get them off anything, it's just the wire hanging on the stall.
I wonder, that's for something. What do we have? We have heavy-duty, uh, carabiners laying around and they— we got no purpose.
Hey, this might— we don't have to cut this because this carabiner is so big.
I think the cable will come up over it. Next up, we're gonna hang this thing and start attaching the winch. Exciting stuff. Running out of time today. The beautiful one, I need to go on a walk. Ever since the winter, you know, I think my— the soreness in my back has been a little more tense, and I think it might be because I'm not getting as much aerobic exercise as I normally do on the farm just because things have slowed down. So we're gonna have to just fit that in, but we're gonna hang this thing. We'll hang a pulley there, a pulley there, and get this thing up. And hopefully, hopefully our hand crank will work. I've never worked with pulleys before, but the instructions are there. I know how to read, so hopefully I can do this. Maybe this afternoon after the walk. Not then. Tomorrow. All right, we had a good walk. Uh, I've been looking at installing these winches. That's going to be in a very soon future step. It's calling for bolts. Are we gonna bolt through this? And it's calling for a 3/8 diameter bolt. Can you get one long enough to get through that, or do you get a Hex head lag bolt. What's that?
Yeah, it's gonna go right through that.
Yeah, that's probably a little bigger than 3/8, but that's not my problem. It's, do they have a bolt that thin, that long? Should it be something like this? This is not 3/8, this is thicker. It's got to be able to go through that. Uh, should it be that, or a bolt all the way through the post? We could get a thinner one, I imagine. You know what, we've got a master carpenter here. Let's ask him. I guess you're a master plumber too.
Yeah, the carpenter's gone, the plumber's here today.
I like it.
He took the day off.
I've got this winch I need to attach to a 6x6. Yeah, up in the air to a 6x6, so 5.5 inches. Yeah, and it's calling for 3/8-inch bolts. To attach this to this post. Yeah, see that? Yep, 3/8 inch. Should I get a bolt that goes all the way through? And do they have that thin and long of a bolt? Or should I get like hex head lag bolt?
Yeah, how much weight you gonna have?
500 pounds.
500?
Mm-hmm. He said the trough weighed 500 pounds. I'm lifting a trough that. Or might be a little less, uh, 400 maybe.
I'd say I'd put, put some lag bolts about 4 inches long in it.
Okay.
And if that don't work, you can just drill it out and put a bolt all the way through it.
Okay. I also just went and assessed my thimbles. Yeah, those aren't going to Those aren't going to reach over there. Those are too small. Yeah, I'm, I'm going through the struggles with— for y'all so that you guys will know exactly what to order because these are way too small. You think you can get us some thimbles that are big enough for that? Look, that's no way. It's a quarter inch. It's going to be a quarter inch wire. Uh, yeah. That's what this is called, them dimples rigging. And I feel like these clamps are wimpy too. They're like 8-inch, but I was thinking that's rated for 8-inch wire, but I feel like those should be bigger too. I mean, look at that. Look at this tiny clamp. Yeah. Hey, what are you doing?
Making a step stool for our rent.
Oh nice. What's the step stool for, do you know?
Fries are hot.
That looks good. Indian Wednesday, we're calling it a day. This is gonna be a nice ending. What is this, Arun?
It's a chicken tikka masala.
Ah, and it's a dal and it's rice. Nice. And me cooking with Arun Kumar. Nice shirt, buddy.
Thank you.
You got your shirt for your channel?
Yeah, I just got two actually.
Okay, nice, it looks good. Where's my shirt? Hey, where's my Cooking with Arun Kumar apron?
Oh, apron?
You don't like shirt?
You get me an apron, I'll wear it.
Because I just want to try first to see how this looks.
It's advertising.
Just for, uh, to see.
Okay, you get me an apron, I'll wear it on the show.
Okay.
