I lost all the vlog, so we’re going live instead

Victor Justin Rhodes and Rebecca improvise a live stream after losing their vlog footage, making maple syrup ice cream with 2 cups cream, 1.5 cups milk, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 4 egg yolks, and half a cup maple syrup. They answer questions about farm life, discuss new water lines and turkey gates, and share plans to add 20 ducks and 4 geese.

Oh, there we just hit live. Kind of a special impromptu treat today. The beauty is making ice cream. We're going to walk you through that process. Totally not the plan, but that's what happened. So all you folks who are getting on early, we're just going to wait a second or two to get some folks on, let people get the notifications. Okay, do you want me to go in the loft with you? We're live. That loft's a gamble, honey. It gets kind of crazy. Oh, it's pretty good today. We lucked out. So we are live, and who knows what could happen here because we just had to jump on, uh, because I gotta go do chores in about 20 minutes. Yeah, rest in peace vlog. I'll share that story here in a second. There will be no vlog today. We are going live. Rebecca's getting maple syrup on the tap.
Maple syrup from our tap. Oh my gosh, I got this on a Jerk Standard.
So what are you gonna do with that maple syrup?
This goes in the ice cream.
Okay, we got a bunch of cool people getting on back. The people have arrived.
Okay, good.
The cool people are here. They're piling in. Teddy, you coming? So I'm gonna tell you all the story in a second. Let's welcome some people. Kara, Rabia, Michael, Francis, Matthew, Flying King, Sally, Amy, Melissa. Boy, people are just coming in here, man. People are excited about growing food. People are excited about seeing you make this maple syrup sweetened ice cream from our milk. Uh, Colton, Karina, Sow the Land, hit the thumbs up, he says. Or is that Lorraine? Lorraine, Lorraine, our big, our big cheerleaders. Thank you guys. Thank you, Southern Land, for getting on here impromptu to help moderate. Oh, somebody's throwing in some dollar bills at the chat, so thank you very much for that. Didn't expect that. We appreciate that. So, um, let's flip this thing around. Yeah. All right, stop looking at me. Okay, well, you're, you're separate. You're putting Wow, you're kind of doing something interesting.
I'm putting egg yolks, okay, in the mixture.
You didn't mean to do that?
No, I didn't mean to lose it out completely. So then I just kind of get all the whites off of it and plop it in.
All right, I'm gonna flip this back around because I'm gonna keep it on you for a minute. Okay, let's watch this, guys. Okay, so yeah, look at how she's getting, uh, White's out. Yes, they're super orange.
They are, they're really orange, and the yolk is very like sitting up nicely.
Try to do that with a Go Grocery egg.
Uh-uh, it would break all of them.
Not gonna happen. You're not gonna be able to handle that, that yolk. So no homemade, no homemade ice cream from the grocery store. Man, thank you, uh, Justa.
I probably wouldn't use grocery store eggs to make— put it in, because I don't— because we don't cook this.
Hey, Brandon Curry from Texas, welcome to the house, buddy. Okay, thank you for the gift. All right, so she's just washing my hands.
So I'll give you my ice cream recipe because lots of people ask for it. I do 2 cups of cream to 1.5 cups of milk. You could do 2 cups of milk. I don't know why I do— it was just the recipe that I had. Um, then 2 teaspoons of vanilla, 4 egg yolks, and 1/2 cup of maple syrup. But you can add more maple syrup if you like it to be sweeter. Um, and then I just put it in the ice cream machine. Mine is 35 minutes and it makes it perfect.
Yeah, wholesome roots in the house. Thank you, Amy, for the gift. Kevin, what's up, buddy?
Does anyone have any questions?
Oh, they want— yes, they want those dungarees, which are your overalls.
Oh, so they're Patagonia?
Yeah, that's one of the most popular questions.
Yes, these. Okay, so I love my Patagonia overalls. They are so comfortable. I actually have 3 pairs now.
And that's your brand now, Rebecca? It's just totally—
this is the regular size. So see, they're kind of, um, they're kind of long. Regular is long. I don't know if my other ones were short or not, but they're not this long.
Yeah, yeah, they look good. And Kara wanted to know, did you remember the chocolate chips this time? Nope. She's referring to a time we made—
yes, so I'm only just making vanilla. We're not doing anything fancy for the Fourth of July, it's just gonna be vanilla.
Natasha says that's hella— that sounds yummy. Welcome to the house, Natasha.
So this is— and then just turn on the ice cream maker.
Okay, that's it. You push the button, push the button. We aren't making any memories. We, uh, I'll say this, we made plenty of memories. I made plenty of memories milking that cow, milking those 7 teats. We have 2 cows, one of them's got 3 teats. So we're gonna go outside where you can hear us a little bit better. Quick story on why there is no vlog today. Rarely ever happens. Rarely ever happens. Only happened one more time in all our vlogging history, and we've put up like 1,300 vlogs at this point. You guys hang with us, we're going to show you the chickens. Yeah, it only happened one other time. It was on the Great American Farm Tour, and I formatted the card thinking I was done with the card. If you, if you record all your footage on a card, an SD card, to really erase it and get rid of the files, you have to do something called format. They don't care about the story, they just want to see Teddy. They don't care about the behind the scenes, they just want to get licked. They just want us to get licked. So, um, Jason could probably relate to this. Have you ever done this, Jason? Have you ever done this, Wholesome Roots? So I got the footage off and I put it— I actually, for today, for what was supposed to be today's vlog, I put in yesterday's footage and didn't even know. You're just, you're just grabbing the files and really cutting, pasting, copying and pasting, and I did. I thought I put in— I thought I put the footage safely on our external hard drive. It was not. And I formatted that card this morning, and it— and I never do that. I never— I know he had never—
he had vlogs from days ago.
I always use another card. So anyway, it got— it got— it got formatted and gone. So guys, lucky there was nothing terribly exciting going on. We, we got some more of the water line done. You guys know we're working on the water line to our animals, and we're taking water line from what was going to the pigs because we're establishing a new water line over there, and we're using some of that old stuff on all our, on all our things. And what else? We used the turkey gates. I probably got too excited about that in the vlog, but we put gates out to our pasture a few weeks ago and We're, we're doing that now. They said, where are the kids? They're down at the pretty place having fun on this hot day in the creek. We got people from the UK in here, Rebecca. So guys, we're gonna wrap it up here soon. I gotta go do chores in this hot sun.
I know, I don't think I'm gonna—
we love you too. Hey, we're gonna lose half the audience if you don't come.
So wait, so, um, yeah, I don't know.
Why do you ask?
I don't know if I'm gonna do it.
There's an— there's someone from India.
Well, I have to stay. I have to say ice cream. Okay.
How many minutes?
I haven't— I have an excuse.
How many minutes?
Well, it's 35 minutes.
I'm not gonna be on this for 35 minutes. Oh, you're gonna go out there with us? You're not going on chores? Yeah, yeah, that's fine. And you got supper and all that stuff. Somebody just gave us 2 pounds. I thought you were talking about chores.
I don't know if I'm going on chores.
All right, so I can come back. No, no, I'm just gonna show them the— I'm gonna show them. Oh, we gotta, we gotta somehow get that Chickshaw to stop doing a, a, uh, Yeah, we need to get some sort of prop. I need shoes. You got shoes? Okay, we are live, guys. Okay, uh, let's see. For a minute there, I seriously thought I lost my shoes. You could call me Mr. Brown. Uh, so why is it— another thing a lot of people ask us is where does Mr. Brown get his name? Mr. Brown used to like that book Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? I guess he still does. By Dr. Seuss. We all tried to have nicknames at first when we first started vlogging, uh, just for kicks and giggles. Hers and Gideon's is the only one that stuck. What's mine? The beautiful one. Oh, what was mine? People try to give me nicknames, it never sticks. Huh? It's always Justin. Okay, so Okay, you're gonna go— Rick is gonna go to kickstand. Let's— so you— I'll give you a tease of what's happening in the vlog that will come out tomorrow. So what happened today, it starts with last night. We got some footage, uh, and I did not ruin it. We still have it. We consolidated our flocks. We only have Lily's posse. We got rid of the breakfast— you cannot see through these amazing— Rebecca's amazing crazy herb garden right there. You can't see to the Breakfast Posse, but, um, we've, we got everybody here. We, we've got— where are you guys? We've got the chicken tractor in here for the little chicks. They like to stay in there, and that freed us up for some more room in the, the Chickshaw because we're babysitting Grandma's chickens. This looks terrible. Look at that willy. That's why you need the kickstand. Rebecca, I can't keep— we can't keep staring at this, it's awful. So then the lady's down there taking some dust baths. And what else? Where are the chicks? So today I fixed this, I fixed this so chicks wouldn't get out. Unless they got out. I bet they're in the— should we go in there and see? What are you guys saying? There are never any scorpions in my boots. No, I'd be— thank you. Kevin says our garden is beautiful. Hi from British Columbia. So yeah, let's go in here and let's see where these chicks are. Okay, I think I see them. Okay, they are under here. Ah, yeah, you guys are staying cool. You're smart, some of the big girls. Um, so, all right, I'm gonna jump off of here. I don't know where Rebecca went. She was supposed to help me with this. Um, I guess she's checking on the kids. So let's get this thing— let's get this thing off of a wheelie. We have a stand, we don't know where it is right now, but there you go. So We put the— yes. Oh, you got it. Okay, we put the wheels on middle so it's easier to move because all the weight goes to the middle and you don't have to pick up as much, but you need a stand. Thank you. Can you hold that for us?
I will hold that for you. I can't, it's so bright. We need to go back on the porch. That's right.
That's a big one. Now the wheels aren't touching, Rebecca.
Well, maybe bury it in a little bit. Oh yeah, yeah, there we go. Oh, sorry, I had my hand in front of it.
That worked.
Sorry about that. Oh wow, look at those pretty eggs. Okay, I'm like, it's so hot, we gotta get inside. Oh, sorry, I'm really bad at this. I'm like looking at the chickens. Sorry everybody who's on the live, I'm not so good at this.
So, oh, I was telling them, uh, what we were doing, what we got today. Yeah, I was telling them about the— we put up, uh, we put up a wire.
Wait, what are you talking about?
They were getting out. Hey.
I don't know what you're supposed to have me do. Okay, sorry.
So, and then what? What else would you do? I don't know. We'll see tomorrow. I'm not, I'm not gonna lose it though, I can tell you that much. I've gotta hold this, Rebecca. Do you want to?
Okay, yeah, I will. Should I turn it around? How do I turn it around? There we go. There we are. Okay, so It's really hot, y'all. It's crazy. So we are— somebody's here. We've put something free on Craigslist. They're coming to pick it up. And okay, now I can see the comments. Sorry, I could not see them. It is a scorcher in Texas. The Niners are playing down at the pretty place. I think you can— let's see. Oh, there we go. It's really close. All right, all right.
Well guys, thank you for getting on here. Sorry about losing the vlog. It's been fun to hang out with you guys.
Hold on a second, I want to say this. We are not in Texas. I had— I had said that. Somebody had said something and I said, oh, because they had said it was scorcher in Texas. We are not in Texas, we're in North Carolina.
I think we have more humidity than Texas.
I think it's funny because we were kind of nervous that today wasn't going to be— or this summer wasn't going to be very warm.
It is, uh, we've had a couple of—
it's very warm. We don't have any honeybees, but that will be something that maybe we add in the future. And Justin's gums are healing up really nicely. We go next week to have a checkup.
Yes, thank you guys for asking about that.
Mr. Brown, it's not his real name.
What new and different animals? Well, we're gonna get ducks and geese mid-July for meat, so 20 ducks, 20-ish ducks, 24-ish ducks. So maybe 2 ducks a month we'd eat for a year. And then turkeys— no, we have turkeys out there, but we're gonna get a geese. We're gonna get 4 geese.
We're gonna get geese. And I think we might run and do another run of chickens because I'm always afraid. I'm afraid we're not gonna have enough chicken.
She's afraid we're gonna have—
I know, I'm like, I like to stockpile the meat.
180 chickens in our freezer and you're afraid ice baths would feel nice today?
It really would.
All right. Well, I'm gonna have to go, Rebecca, because it's chore time. Okay, I'm probably gonna let the kids swim because we don't have to move the sheep.
Okay, are you moving the cows? Where are you moving them to?
They're coming behind us. Oh, so they're coming down to some of the easiest, most lush pasture.
We got a lot of cream tomorrow.
So, all right guys, thank you. All right, see you guys. Uh, we'll talk to you later. We'll see you in tomorrow's vlog. I ain't gonna lose it. Bye-bye.
How do I end it? Do you know how to end it?

If I had to start my Homestead all over again, it could only pick one animal…
