I May Have Found A Way to Keep tiny Chicks In | MEGA VLOG

In this extensive farm vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes and his family members (Lily, Rebecca, Gideon, Arun, and others) spend the day managing a growing flock of chickens and chicks. They begin by clipping wings—discussing the merits of clipping one versus both wings—and counting the chicks to ensure none are lost. Victor outlines a new coop concept called the "Chickshaw 2.0," an A‑frame design intended to house up to 60 birds, and debates how to transition the growing birds from a sheep‑net enclosure to pasture. The group repairs a leaky chicken run, identifying broken boards and missing wire mesh, and debates tool needs (tape measure, lumber). Throughout the day they integrate high‑intensity workouts into chores, splitting mulch, raising a swing, and using a metal trough for pig feed. They also tend the garden—watering onions, garlic, potatoes, and lettuce—while testing eggs with a float test. Family dynamics surface as they coordinate tasks, discuss health (sleeping on a hard mattress, vitamin D, blood‑test goals), and plan upcoming business content for the Abundance Plus platform, including a master class on poultry netting. The vlog ends with Victor completing the fence repair, preparing for the master class, and wrapping up for dinner.

Hey, you and I are the only ones working today. Remember, don't let out the big chicks yet. Chickens. Okay, we're gonna clip their wings.
We could all do all the little animals and come back and rest till 8:30 and then milk.
I was thinking we might fix the chicken run so the chicks don't get out. The chicks went up last night, so that's a game changer for a little bit. What do you think, should we fix their run?
Why don't you just put them in that stall in the grass?
I was thinking it's easier just to keep them in there to have them as one flock, and that gives us some time to maybe build a better coop, like a Chickshaw. Set that A-frame up for the chicks. We were gonna put them out in a shocker knot net and, you know, just get them out on grass. Get them— well, they weren't going up in the coop. Well, I think it took last night, they went up. I think it was like night— day 4. So that wasn't too bad. So I'm kind of glad that didn't work out. I was going to move the chicks yesterday. So I think at least That buys me some time. Well, not everybody got up, but there's only 4 out. But that's a whole lot better than 60 out. But they can't all grow up fully in here. There's like 60 of them and this will hold 30 at most. Plenty of room right now. See, plenty of room. All right, go ahead, guys. Lily, I just did what I told you not to do. I let out the big birds. Here's my scissors from yesterday. You want to grab that net? There's a net over there somewhere. I saw it yesterday. Uh-oh, I don't see it. There it is, but somebody has put rocks in it. Who's Kai, Lily?
This one.
What does Kai mean to you?
A lot.
Holy chicken squat, that's huge! Sometimes when I clip just both wings, somebody's saying, oh, you only have to click one. Well, the rooster has got one wing clipped and he's still jumping on the banister, so we're gonna see if two does it before we cull him. Lily's got him distracted with feed. That worked pretty good. I gotta be more careful about the, uh, after I catch him. That's easy enough. Clip her wings. See, she's already got clipped wings, so I don't know if she's jumping or what. I'll put her back in so then I know who I haven't clipped and who I have clipped. See that chick outside the fence? There's any number of places it can get out. So instead of moving these chicks out to a whole nother posse, it's a lot easier to manage chickens. The less posses you have, the easier. It's only one set of water, one set of feed, as opposed to two. One, one set of fence to keep them all in. They could maybe be getting out there. Hey, that one just got back in. It's probably getting out through here. So we haven't refortified this in a year. So it's time. There's 3 little chicks out. I want to try to count them. I want to see if the big ladies can't get out first, and then we'll count them. We're done now. So all the big ladies hopefully will come out first. 4, 5, 6. 45 so far. A lot left in there, but I don't want to rush them. I want them to feel comfortable in their coop. 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56. Now maybe I can count the rest of them in here. I think so. 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 65. I counted the— accidentally counted the mama hen. So 65. Lily, we can't lose more than 5, so we gotta get this.
I don't think we'll lose any.
You don't? I hope so. We can take an extra. Let's do our chores and then make sure this coop is, uh, or this fence is fortified. Should we get the boys then?
Well, we can do a few more chores.
Yeah, put Teddy back in. I don't want him in the tall grass of the luchadors. That was game changer right there. Maybe— see, do you see my problem? We have 65 chicks coming on plus adult chickens. Ain't no way they're gonna fit in that, uh, Pretty Shaw. The Pretty Shawl is basically the, the Chick Shawl mini-me. And Max, it would hold 30. We've got one out in the field, it's got a dozen chickens in it. So eventually the, the fat chicks will replace everybody and we'll have 30 in the field, 30 right here. We're gonna have to have another coop. To split everybody up a bit. Oh, you know what would work? Shoot, I totally forgot. Here's the other complication: we can't put the fat chicks out into the pasture until they're fully grown, because those chicks are only in sheep net. And if you put a chick out there, that chick will go through that sheep net no problem, and they'll just be trained to be able to do that, and they'll keep doing it even when they're older. Ta-da! How could I forget the OG, the Chickshaw 2.0? There are— oh, those have got to be rotten. Oh, there's mucho eggs. Maybe it's worth a try. I think it's worth a try. This was their winter situation inside the greenhouse. Let's get those eggs. You know, eggs have got a goop on them that will make them last for weeks. Without refrigeration. So, you know, there's a rotten egg test. This is not it. We put it in water and see if they float. So that's what we'll do because we could use the eggs. This is perfect. This will hold 60 birds. It's a little big to be running out in the pasture by hand with 60 birds in it, but we could put it in this lower pasture what we were going to do with the A-frame. You want to do that, Lily, when the chicks get a little older? Maybe.
Yeah, when they're like a little older, huh?
And they're like mini hens, like teenagers. Okay, let's go move the luchis. So what to do with this A-frame? I'm thinking we'll keep it. I mean, we almost used it. We can probably just store it somewhere. I've ran out of shed space, especially with the Kubotas coming I think we should get a hose out here, and that way we can hook up to the water line instead of walking through the tall grass a long way to the creek. What do you think? Should we just go ahead and get that now? Yeah, because we're never— I'm never gonna remember to bring it. Good morning. Are they not gotten up yet? Oh my gosh, they can't handle a party.
And I was like, what's going on in here?
We had a community party at the barn last night and they're all sunburned too. Are they? They went hard yesterday. It's 7:15. They're like 45 minutes late to being outside. Who turned the light off? Come on, it's 7:15, you party animals. What'd you stay up till 9:30? 10.
10. I fell asleep right away.
Well, good. Come on, get up right away. Let's go. Lenny and I have already done so much.
How much?
Well, the chicks— we're about to go do the pigs and the luchadors. Trying to get the kids back out and going. Came back over here for some shots of the people barn. Come on, kids. Um, I unexpectedly gave my dad, my late dad, a tour of the people barn. End up being emotional. I think it kind of stands alone, so I'm gonna go ahead and make that an extra video for you guys. Maybe, uh, well, this— let's do it this Saturday.
I wonder if you could get them piped up to heaven.
One thing my dad said on his deathbed is— I was asking if he's still watching the vlogs, and he said, oh, I'm gonna get them piped up to heaven. I hope so.
I hope so too.
You ever think about him? Yeah. What do you think?
I wonder what he's like up there.
Oh, you do? You wonder what it's like up there?
What are you doing? Ah, why aren't you wearing your apron?
Oh gosh, I forgot it. Oh wow, that's my really old one. Okay, where'd you find that?
Hanging up.
Thanks, Lily. Is there no water connector on this one?
Nope.
Yeah, it is. Look, here it is. Oh, there's a hose. Well, let's see if it works. I didn't know there was a hose out here. Ready? Whoa, it works! And there's a hose, so happy day. Turn it on.
Yep, it takes a little bit.
You sure? There it is. Let's take this back then. Lily got called in to get Gideon a snack. Gideon, this is maybe why we're not gonna— I'm not gonna let you sleep in like that next time because we've— Lily and I have already been out there working for an hour and now I'm kind of having to do this. Premier One sent us this metal trough. This looks awesome. We used plastic before because we were fermenting our feed and it was wet and it would rust the smell. We're not doing that anymore. So let's see, let's just see how the feed does in that for the sea monsters. Should I get a water hose out there to that? Should I have done that? Because that would have been— that would be a good workout to walk water, carry water uphill. So maybe I shouldn't have done that. But you know, I don't know if others on the farm are into the workout, so maybe, maybe we will, um, maybe we will take this optional. This is for those who don't want to work out, can fill up the hose at the Sea Monsters, fill up the trough. Gideon will be mad at me, I think, if he takes that— if I take that without him. He's getting dressed. Why don't we feed the, uh, pigs? Thank you, my man. Did you get us some— what? Premier One sent it to us. Isn't that cool?
Yeah, it is.
Hey, where's the, um— oh, you got screws? Well, you'll need the Phillips for that, that screw. Oh sweet. And we only have like 40 minutes. I want so badly to do that. That's from Premier One too. I think it's a waterer.
It is.
Uh, there's, there's other pieces. They sent us 3. Thanks very much. I think it goes inside of it.
Probably a bobber system.
I can't read this, it's in German. What? Made in Germany. Stopless in der Tronc. Einfaches Befüllen um Stelpen. Sorry, sorry for you Germans watching. Butchered that.
Einfaches Befüllen.
We've got about 35 minutes, so maybe we can do these chores. Get the high-intensity workout and milk, then do the chicken run. And maybe Beautiful One and Henry will be available, can come out with us. Get in. Oh good, you're ready. Come on, you don't need so much clothes. You're just gonna strip them and leave them out in the field. Do you guys want me to raise the swing?
Yes.
Josiah said, will you raise the swing? And I said, how about this? Everybody helps me with a good attitude. We'll raise the swing before we go in. I'll even push you. A lot of times I like to get done, done with project before, um, well, before milking, so that I can go in and get started on office work. So much to do with the business, but there's also so much to do with the homestead. It's just this time of year, so it's forcing me to think what is the most important, and health's got to be way up there. So, and I want to do my workout in the morning so like I have that benefit for the rest of the day and I get it out of the way. I'm not thinking about it. For the little pigs. Thank you, my man. Oh, get that basket of eggs when you're over there, please. We set it down there. Let's put on the stairs so we don't forget it. And I waited on you to do this. You want to take a ride? Sure, it'll be a good little warm-up for our splitting maul session. Get all the way in. How about I go as fast as I can, take a break on the flat, we'll hit it again on the hill. This is cool because the— yes, you can get in there— the handle You know, the handle swivels. Oh, you guys all right? Everybody all right? Look all right? I think that's funny. All right, we really need to be working out right now. We've got 20 minutes till— but you know what, I've still got to get my water. I'm gonna leave the hose so that can just be the start of the workout, and we'll just do what we can. Oh, they like it, and they can't get in there because of that handle, which is good. Oh, I should put you on my back too, huh? Okay, let's go get these waters. Jonah's got a bunch ready for me to—
don't do the hatchet—
split mulch ready. Well, some of these are axes, they're not— that's different.
I didn't want this one.
Hey, do you have any wedges? Yep, like wedges, like just this part over there. Can you bring them too? Let's get them. There's one of my nice hoes sitting on top of that barrel. Oh good, can you put it back? Sure. Always wear eye protection, kids. Well, we got 2, 2 mauls, 3 mauls and a wedge. We really got 5 minutes, but maybe we can be 10 minutes late and get 15 minutes in. Sure, let's do it. Get your show-off log. Watch out, everybody watch out. Okay, heads up, Johnna, watch out please. You got to put that further away. Oh, maybe not so much show off. One. Oh, it's a good workout. It's a good upper body workout.
Oh yeah.
Maybe then this one is a show off. You want to get it in one shot. Ready? Watch out, Jonah. Back up, back up. Ah yes. Hey, have you guys ever heard of flying off the handle? Yeah, that's because of splitting maul. Uh, a mallet goes flying off the handle. So Jonah, if I'm splitting right here, I guess I'll— you have— you can't split towards somebody in case that thing goes flying. And look, nobody can be behind you either. Got done splitting, got my workout in, got some firewood. Yeah, I'd say that needs to be raised. Yeah, everything has a place, everything in this place. I was tempted to just leave them up there somewhere by the barn. But thinking I'll return to it. Well, yesterday I thought I would return to these scissors and I totally forgot all about them. And one of you guys had this saying, never leave a room empty-handed. Beautiful idea. I'm gonna put these scissors back. I'm not gonna leave this room empty-handed. Grab those scissors. Boom. I just left this room empty-handed, didn't I? All right. Grab this recycle bag. Put it— you're getting you a snack there, Josiah? Put it right here. I don't want to leave this room empty-handed. I'll grab Teddy's toy. Oh, double whammy. Uh, plastic trash. Am I ever gonna get out of here? I'm gonna put this in the trash, and then I'll get the milk stuff and I'll leave with that.
If someone did that They would never get anywhere.
I'm inside getting the milk pail stuff. Lily's coming. Okay, so you got a chicken with a broken leg.
He can't really walk at all.
Okay, that might actually happen when we were catching them the other day. I feel like one got in the spokes. Um, okay, well, you could try to nurse it back if you want. So just put it in its own bin. You could even put it in your room.
Oh, we're getting turkeys.
I know, I ordered feed. I hope it's coming in time. Hey, um, where you going? Get you a bin. Listen, shavings, quart water, quart feeder, set up in your room. Okay, that's a good idea for the other chick, but now she's gonna have to cover it up because that other chick will jump out.
Oh, because she's getting a friend for it?
Yeah, which is Smart. Hey, Mr. Henry. Hey, are you getting changed? Do you like that?
I dressed him like a happy boy, like a dad today. I just grabbed two things.
He slept like a jewel for us.
He did. He was so tired.
He knows how to give his old folks a break.
He was tired.
Gideon, will you take my milk for me? Milk pails. I'll go grab the alfalfa. Better water the garden because it hasn't rained again in another week. I'm like, 2-ish weeks. The watering's been helping though. Here, let's let the water pass here. Okay. Oh, I didn't let it pass. Whoops. Onions are jamming. Looks like we need to weed them though. The potatoes are jamming. Holy crud, this garlic! Hopefully there's a bulb on here. It's about time to harvest. Oh, that's lame. Look at how big those are. Oh whoa, it's a little tiny garlic head. All right, give it another month, I guess. You guys got so excited about those green stalks, many of you went and bought them. Rhodes 10, you get $10 off, 10% off, something like that. Dude. It's jammin'.
Look.
Holy crud.
Look at there too.
And you end up decapitating it.
Because it's growing so much.
Look, Mom.
I know.
He's got his supports on there. Is that how you do it or does it go above them?
No, it goes like that. Well, 'cause it'll grow out and it'll sit up there. You know who did this? Who?
Gideon and Azraiah.
Really?
It was that easy? That a 6 and a 7-year-old could put it on?
You've been watering it? You still water it right there? Since you don't have your top on. Yeah, okay, that's cool, man. Oh, did it get jamming too big?
Yeah, they're growing so much.
Yeah, have you harvested from it yet?
Yes, we did.
What did you eat?
We did lettuce, sea lettuce, so much.
Yeah, look at that, so beautiful.
That's green stock. You guys got so excited about that. I got you guys 10% off. Rhodes 10, $10, $10, $10 off. That, that's dollar bills, 10 of them. Uh, Rhodes 10. Is it capital Rhodes? It doesn't matter. I'll also leave that info in the description. I'll leave the link in the description.
It was so thirsty.
Oh, was it water? So you saved it? Where'd you put it? In a box in your room. Yeah. Did you get another one in there?
No, I will if you want me to.
Well, if you do put another one in there which is not a bad idea. You're gonna have to cover the box so it can't jump out.
I did cover it.
Like with wires.
Well, the injured one won't jump out, but if you put a healthy one in there, it will jump out and poop all over your bedroom.
That means you can, you could probably put another one in there. Just in case you were wondering why I had my shirt off— vitamin D. Call me the shirtless farmer, or not. Uh, you got your little chickie in here? Yeah, if you only keep the one in here, you could be okay and not put a lid on it. How's she doing?
I don't— you never know if it's just he or he.
Well, this one is actually a she. We got sexed. Did, did it drink?
Yep.
Okay, it was really thirsty. Well, then you probably saved it.
It heard the water and it waddled over.
It's 10 till 10. I have a call at 11, storyboarding for a potential show for Abundance Plus. I don't give you any more details because it still might not happen. Um, basically my 3 jobs for Abundance Plus are building the platform, marketing it, and bringing in the content. That's what today's about. Rebecca and I had one of those You ever have this? You have a good idea last night, in the night, and you're all excited and you're energized, and then in the morning, like, what was I thinking? Well, I thought that would be a test, and this morning we're still thinking it's a good idea, but I think I gotta jump on a phone call before the phone call. Just wrapped up the Zoom call. Guys, I want this so bad to be about more than just Rebecca and I. That's why we're exploring 1, 2, uh, 3, 4 options of different kinds of content than just my content. So I think that would be good. More details coming soon as we get closer to the launch of this thing. Rebecca's got a moment. This is what you do with your moment. Bless you.
Basically, I get a lot of—
it took you a long time. To get him to sleep.
Well, he's in— he's having a leap. There's like this app called Wonder Weeks, I think. Anyways, he's in his leap, which is he does not want to be apart from me. It takes me a long time to get him to go down without me.
Rebecca, I want to show you something. We had the idea for the Chickshaw 2.0 for the chicks, by the way. Oh really? I mean, we have some time, but let's do it pretty soon. Definitely not this week. But are these raw?
Well, we have to test them.
I know. So when you're done doing the dishes, let's test them. Okay. Actually, that can be our breakfast. We thought out— or lunch. We thought out bacon, and we just need to get a bowl. We, we just need— we just need a bowl to test these, and those can be y'all's eggs.
Are you Are you eating or not?
No, I've been feeling really good. Oh, Madden, okay, sleeping on the harder mattress. That's not it, right?
Well, we'll work it out, but I'm not sleeping on no— yeah, rock hard mattress.
Because right now I'm sleeping on this hard mattress on the floor just to test it. Um, so I'm feeling good, you know. I've been doing that high-intensity chores. Feels like I'm losing some weight, which means the inflammation is coming down. I've been getting the— I see this I've been getting the vitamin D like you have. Yep, redneck.
I knew I was gonna get a sunburn yesterday.
Yeah, you can't just take off your shirt like I can. No, although it probably looks funny shirtless with that apron on.
Oh well, whenever Justin's trying to defuse a situation, he'll take his shirt off and put an apron on.
You're telling them that? I'm telling them that.
I'll get a glimpse of it and it makes me laugh.
She's a little on edge. A little aggravated. You can't do it if it's too much, but a little bit. You put that kitchen apron on with no shirt on, guys, that'll break the tension.
It'll defuse whatever may happen.
All right, Beck, main test.
I'm grossed out by this.
What we want it to do— okay, so this one, you got to put more water in there so it's no doubt. So what it— what is it?
Okay, so you want it—
it is actually laying on its side. It's kind of It's kind of up now. It is kind of sitting up on its tip, but it says that's okay.
Okay, it's just nearing it.
We're talking— we're talking about Mr. Google Pants here. What we don't want is a floater, and preferably laying on their sides. That's on its tip.
Yeah, so this is okay.
So, and there's nothing like actually cracking it open. Maybe I'll break them open one at a time into a little bowl, and then if they're good and fresh and then I'll pour them into the main goal because you'd hate to like crack one open. Uh-oh, do we have a floater?
No, no, they're all— they're all— I think probably—
all right, we got a floater. I know, we got us a rotten egg.
Well, it says it's not necessary, but we're not doing it.
I'm not risking it. That one's definitely a sinker. Okay, who wants to break that open? You guys want to go throw it at a tree?
Sure, but not anywhere near us.
Not, not like the fruit tree in the yard. I just did 4 phone calls. I'm like phone called out.
Are you?
Yep.
I had a lot of physical and watered my garden.
Okay, so I was gonna say, what are you doing out here?
Yeah, so I went out and the lettuce that you planted yesterday was really wilted. Oh, so I watered it really good.
Spring up. I see Arun is catching chicks, so I don't think I can put this off another day. I wanted to put this off, but I still need to get some sunshine, take this shirt off.
Honey, I wish I could take my clothes off, right?
You, right? Arun wedged rocks in there. They were getting up through there. It looks like we've never buried wire over here. Still one more?
Yeah, there's one left.
Oh. Good catch. So those two were the only vulnerabilities in this one. It's a broken board. Oh yeah, and there's no wire right there. Okay, there's no wire on this one either. So this board has broken. Oh, there was a board. Okay, and that was holding it up, I bet. Yeah, this one, and it was going behind it. Do we have wire mesh to bury? Do we need to order some? I actually do think we're out. Arun thinks we're out, but I'm just double-checking. I could maybe fix that board. I don't know, we could just move these chicks out sooner than later. Do we have any board on our scrap lumber? No, this is, this is too narrow. Honestly, can't find the tape measure. To go ahead and measure a board to replace. We don't have the— gosh, what do I do, guys? Because I need to really— I need to prepare for tomorrow. We're doing a master class on poultry netting for chickens, guys, like how to unbox, how to attach it. And I need to make sure I'm prepared because that's Monday morning— tomorrow morning, Tuesday at 6:30. I talk about this because I know you're going through it. Like, how do I balance all that? Like, I need to— well, let's see if we even have this. Randolph's probably got a tape. How embarrassing. I don't have a measuring tape. That's like the first tool you would ever buy. Okay, well, is that too thick? Too, too wide? I promise you, a member asked, what was the very first tool you would buy if you're starting over on a homestead? I said a tape measure. Will it fit? I think it can go up as high as it needs to. It's replacing that board, so yeah, actually. All right, I also promised the kids I would raise the swing up this high. Okay, about that much more. Yeah, probably got that in that strap right there. I do need to get the tractor bucket again though. We're lucky, lucky started. I'm gonna go ahead and climb up there this time. You guys go with me, okay? I'm gonna set you right here. We didn't have to put the bucket all the way up this time. How's that? You guys all right right there? Okay, ready? 1, 2, 3. I'm getting pretty good at that now. What I've got to do is unnotch it right here and do it right and bring it back up there. What I'm going to do is pull it up there and then you're going to say if that's enough. Is it good? Can they get up on it?
Yeah.
Just as I was going to get on the tire, I'm going to hand them to you guys. Have you guys already worn this out swinging? So that's a big popular thing, huh? Yeah. Swallowed my pride and asked to borrow a tape measure. You got a tape measure I can borrow? Sure do. Is that your only one? No. Okay, thank you. Shirtless farmer has got him a measuring tape. Doing this for the health. Getting blood tests again in 3 months. I'm gonna see if we can't drastically have different results in just 3 months' time. The question is, am I going to pull the staples out? Aha, they came out very easy, so this is good. I don't want to do that yet. I want to go ahead and get the board cut, then do that, then put it up, and we'll minimize the vulnerability here. Mulch in here will help. I, I tell you, I'm kind of waiting to see what happens with, with this Kubota deal, if that comes this week or not. Might be worth holding out to use that thing to haul in the mulch.
Sure. Thank you.
Oh yeah, I did it! I did it! Yep. Well, that actually went pretty smooth. I was actually able to do it with just that one board instead of two. Which is better. And now I think— look, I think I have my workout in the morning. Well, shoot, I'm gonna have to wait until the wire gets here, but then I can bury— I can dig this hole and bury wire mesh like this. That's it. So happy about that. I need to let you guys go. I'm gonna film for a master class fencing tomorrow for Abundance Plus. I need to get inside to get focused on that, then make supper. So let's wrap this up.
