This content was created by Victor Justin Rhodes. This content was uploaded by Victor Justin Rhodes. This is a YouTube vlog titled "I went to train my herd dog (1st time), then got licked" (created 2019-01-15, last edited 2026-04-10). The transcript is an English homestead/farm vlog with two labeled speakers (SPEAKER A and SPEAKER B) performing morning chores: trying to train the herd dog Laurel, feeding pigs and chickens, collecting eggs, checking a time-lapse, spreading gypsum and lime to amend clay soil, planning cover crops (80% rye / 20% Austrian peas), and discussing upcoming activities including a New Year's member-area registration, outreach to influencers, and a pig-butchering workshop (with Arthur and The Holler Homestead). The audio also notes animals and people by name (Jonah, Josiah, Gideon, Phyllis, Flossie, Grandpa Chook) and practical farm details (soaking grain in skim milk, stanchion use, estimating an animal's imminent birth).

Good morning, buddy. You up and at 'em? Rise and shine.
Okay, huh?
You don't want to get out of the warm bed? Um, I'm having a little hard time getting out of the bed too this morning. Running about an hour behind when I would like to get up. Couldn't sleep last night. I was so excited. We're launching our New Year's registration for the member area in early February, and I had this idea to contact other influencers, my friends, other experts, to see if they'll contribute videos to the member area. So you ever have those ideas at night and get so excited you can't go to sleep? You coming, or you gonna sleep on the floor? Going back to sleep on the floor. You must be in front of the heater. I'm expecting an email I found a local dog trainer for Laurel. Oh, her dog trainer. Local, y'all. I'm trying to set up an appointment for them to come here. I haven't seen that they replied. It's been a couple of days. I'm gonna write down their number and hopefully give them a call later. Jonah, you coming? You coming up? He really did pass out on the floor. Let's go, Jonah. Will you bring the cow stuff when you come? I'm gonna go do some stuff in the garden. I thought you were sleeping. You weren't sleeping?
Nope.
You want to get trained? No. Down. Sit. You got that down. You want to get trained? You want to get trained? Oh shoot, I just realized something. I set up this time lapse for a 2-week time lapse of the chickens and pigs gardening this, and I really should I should have left the chickens out when I came out this morning. Last night we set it up for the sundown. This morning we set it up for the sunrise, and the chickens aren't even going to be in the frame at sunrise. Oh well, let's check to see if it even worked. Dark. Oh, oh, it did work, but they're not even— they're not even out. Oh shoot. Oh, and look, it's gotten overexposed. One bag gypsum, one bag lime. That's probably the worst idea I've had yet this morning. I haven't been up too long, so it's not too bad. Do I have it? No, you told me you were doing it. Okay, I forgot. So he's getting— he's caught on to me. I was supposed to feed the pigs and chickens.
I forgot.
Well, hey there, good morning. Good morning. You up and at 'em?
Mm-hmm.
Petting Royal? Oh snap, that's not enough food scraps. Normally this is what I do.
See that?
Scraps from the butcherings. Beef butchering, chicken butchering. Yeah, they'll eventually eat it frozen, but it's better if I set it out the night before and put it in there to thaw out. But no worries, that's not our only farm product option. He's up, he's at him, he's on top of me. Let's do Laurel's training. There's nothing in here Laurel's really gonna like. Let's do it without a treat. Okay, you got her? Yeah, I have no idea. When I'm supposed to be training this dog. That's why I'm contacting a professional. But I know come here would be good. Laurel, come here!
Come here, Laurel!
Where's she going? There, she's going the wrong way. There she goes. She found me. She found me.
Come here.
Come here. Yeah. Wow. Wow. Good job. Good job. Whoa. Don't jump. Don't jump. Let's try it again. Laurel, come here. Yes!
Yes!
Ow!
You're crazy.
You're crazy. Good job, good job, good job. Don't jump, don't jump, don't jump.
She's crazy.
Oh, she's playing that game. Oh, I hate when she does that. She gets something and she wants us to chase her. We need to get her to come now, big time. Let her have it so I can see if she'll come to me. Even though she's excited and not wanting to come. Okay, now when she has something like that, she doesn't let us— she won't come, right? She won't let you get near either. Try to get near Josiah. See, she's not about to come. Try to get near Gideon. Gideon, try to get that from her. See, she runs. Okay, now leave it. Josiah.
Come here.
Good girl, good girl. You want to give that to her? Okay, tell her sit. Sit, sit. Okay, now put it on the ground.
Good, good girl.
You want to check the eggs? Sure. Yeah, why are you going in? I built these so you don't have to go in. Where? Go ahead, Mr. Brown, get it! Oh wow, there's a lot of eggs.
I'm trying to catch one of his hens. Why?
Oh yeah, he's protective. That's good. Grandpa Chook, everyone. Grandpa Chook. He's gonna be around with us for a while. That's our prized Icelandic rooster. A lot of distractions this morning. I think we're ready to do this. Are we ready to do this?
Pig feet.
Got it. What? I got a cat. You got a staff? Okay, good. I just got a text from Arthur. Many of you are wanting to know when we're going to do that pig butchering. Many of you want to come to the hands-on workshop. Don't know how many we can accept into the hands-on. We're going to do an online digital. Arthur. Arthur's going to be involved in this next pig butchering. The Holler Homestead, part-time permies again. It's going to be a good one. That's going to be the weekend, the first weekend of March. I hope to open up tickets on that soon. Oh, looky here, looky here, grain soaked in skim milk. Just adding the skim is more nutrients, minerals, and protein than if I was just to soak it in water, so Mmm, yeah, smells nice and sour. Golly, let me through, buddy. They all in on that. Come on, get the chickens back quick before they eat the pig feed. You're worried about the pigs getting the chicken's feed. 20 minutes later, back to spreading the lime and gypsum. That was gypsum. Breaks down the clay factor of this North Carolina clay. Now we're going to do lime to address the acidity. Now, what to do to cover this? I've been back and forth on this. I don't like this. Plastic gets blown away, it's ripped. Cover crops— I want cover crops to work so bad. It is winter, there's not much light, but there are some beasts of COVID crops, especially talking to my friend Curtis Stone. 80% rye is the plan. Just talking with him, let's throw down 80% rye, 20% Austrian peas. I have the peas Let's get rye later today. Boom! 10 pounds of winter rye. Phyllis is going in the stanchion.
Come on.
Hey, come on, come on. Jenna, watch out.
Come on, I'll pull the string.
Go ahead, go ahead, Miss Thing. No, you're gonna get rammed. Why did she do that? Why do you literally— Oh, look. Let her in.
Let her in.
It's time. Should I lock it?
Yeah, shut it.
Oh, look guys, I don't know if you can see it. Shoot, I should have looked at that when she was in the stanchion. I would love for you guys to see that. There's mucus coming out of the vagina. You know what that means? We're just a few weeks away from birth. I think 2 to 4 weeks would be a good estimate.
Yes!
Hey, Jonas, she's gonna give birth soon.
Who?
Uh, Flossie. Aunt Flossie.
