If this is All We Had…

Victor Justin Rhodes documents a day on his family homestead: moving chickens, repairing a fence and broken track loader, processing raw milk into butter and yogurt, and trimming sheep hooves. He and his kids learn to fix their own equipment and grow more of their own food.

You getting up? No? Come on, get in. Let's go. Me and you, bud. How long should I let them sleep in? It's almost 8. It's almost 8 o'clock. I didn't want to get up either. I swear if Rebecca was in the bed, I was going to go back to bed after I trained. Here's the thing, it's winter, it's time to sleep more. I get it. Here's the problem. If we start sleeping in, letting them sleep in, We start staying up later. It's early to bed, early to rise makes one healthy, wealthy, and wise. It's not the other way around. Late to bed, late to rise make one— makes one ill, poor, and dumb. I don't get it. We went to bed early last night, got back on our normal schedule. The night before Stayed up till like 1:30 Christmas Eve and had more energy the next morning than I do today. What's the deal? Happy day and welcome to our life where if we don't grow it, we don't eat it. Voluntarily and for the most part. If you didn't see it yesterday, I visited with my Uncle Cotty and Aunt Nellie, old-timers, 99— 90 and 88. He'd tell me that's how it was when he was growing up. Everybody had a garden because if you didn't grow it, you didn't eat it. This was a huge garden. Yep. She says she misses it because they used to just supplement. I'm on this health journey, fasting, eating well. We're trying to eat what we grow, what we eat, and eat what we grow. Wondering, should I go on this Uncle Cotty challenge? I don't grow it, I don't eat it. Is it— our house is so efficient, just never has to call on— rarely has to call on this. Pretty sure that's fire's out. It's pretty warm today. So do I start this? I got a fire going. TC1 error. This thermocoupling error. I don't think the fire is supposed to keep going out. Maybe I'll call them today. We are not lacking in content today on account of taking Christmas off yesterday. We got a lot to do, including fixing our own track loader. Daggum, right there. That, that— it knows better. We'll get it back in that way. We have moved the chickens to the high tunnel. That is definitely their high— happy place. There are 1, 2, 3, 4 that I see already out. I meant to come earlier and do this. Add it to the list to get these hose mended so I can get a hose all the way out here to easily fill up our water. Why do you get out if you just want right back in? I also don't know if this is getting a charge through the greenhouse. It's blinking red. Dead. Okay, how we're gonna fix this? I don't see any crazy obvious spots. These chickens are getting under it. Huh, somebody's put a rock on it there. I wonder if they're going through. Because it's sagging. This fence might not be hitting hard. See the sag? You can just go through the bigger rung. I see a spot. Tighten this up just in case. Just look at this girl looking for the breach. It's down there, honey. I'm doing the staple between every single one. I need another kit. I need somebody come out here and help me get them back in. I don't know where the threshold is, like how many chickens out is okay. Certainly with me, 1 or 2 out is okay because there's always somebody out no matter what I do. I'm gonna have an experiment. I'm gonna keep battling this until nobody's out. I have a lot of chicken content. Not only is a dead Energizer not going to keep the chickens in, it's not going to keep predators out. We do have Winnie for that. That's why I'm not terribly concerned even for these ones getting out. I mean, everybody wants to eat a chicken, but Winnie's pretty good about keeping people away, I think. Things away. What I don't like is you are going to scratch up our garlic patch. You're going to poop on our sidewalk. Start getting the cow stuff together while you're doing just size chores. No, I'm not. I'm not doing just size chores. I'm fortifying the chickens. They won't do this. This is a bit nuanced for kids. I mean, I could go tell them to put a spike between every single one, every single post. I didn't have to do that. I just kind of looked and see what needed it. I have to call it to do chores with him to maintain the peace. Shoot, how can we— that'd be awful convenient. It's right outside the fence though. There's one right there. I forgot we had outdoor outlets installed. Uh, how do we test them? Hey, are you playing foosball? Come on. There, that light. Make sure this light works. That'd be awesome if we could charge energizer is right outside the pit stall. I don't know if this light works. It's another newer looking light, perhaps it works. See if that outlet works. I just don't know if the electrician's hooked these up yet. Dang it, dang it. Have you ever tried This is the first time for me. I don't know why it's taking me so long to notice it. What's this to? Well, that's probably the heaters out there, huh? I think that's what that's for. These Premier One Energizers have a plug-in. I'm assuming that's to charge the battery. Okay, so now this doesn't turn on while that's plugged in. I was wondering if it's to be a plug-in Energizer. Oh, what? That's not good. That just ripped. Well, hopefully that still works. Oh, I didn't even do my experiment. Okay, so that goes when it's— so this must be a charger. Okay, you saw it blinking red there. We'll see if it's blinking green tomorrow. You want to help me get the chickens in real quick? No. All right, uh, they pooped in that or something, Jonah. We're gonna have to dump that out and clean it. Hey man, it's bad to stand in a trough. Of course they could have put their rear end up to it, pooped in it. What do you want to do, cows or sheep? I'll just put some bells in. Okay. Hey, I put this— this is one of the things on my list, get this to go underneath. The hose was snaked through the gate, so then when you open the gate, well, you have to step over that. We're probably going to trip on it. Initially it's a little harder to run things lower, but in the long run it's much better. Got that fixed. But also notice we have a crack right here. Did you notice that, Jonah? No, do you not? That's probably gonna leak when we turn that on. Oh, somebody had a premature baby. Shoot, we need to get them their minerals in here. That's on the list, the minerals going. Oh, you poor thing. I'll help you. How do you get that hay over the fence when you go to the group? Throw it over. All right, dang. That's why we got to get this track loader out. Fixing out of here before Lily can go and get her hay bales. Kind of a good spot to be broke down, forces us to fix it. We're determined to fix it ourselves. Plug that quick. You don't want that to be not immersed. Something about it, you can't have it not immersed. Lily's in charge of the youth group now. You're annoying me really badly. I'm gonna get that in after we milk. Grab a bottle real quick. Okay. Oh, he's thirsty. But you're pooping, you have no water, buddy. Hey man, you're thirsty? Thirsty because you don't want to drink poop water. Don't poop in the water. If this is leaking, it's a crack, but it's not leaking. What are you doing, Papa? Well, Mom wants this off. You gotta deal with it right away. Winnie, come here. Could mean there's some mineral deficiencies. Miscarrying like that. Come on there, Waylon. Had their minerals though, so I'm not sure it's that. Are you going to Lowe's? Yeah, why? Well, Mama might. Oh cool, tell her it'll be after breakfast. She gonna let him? Yeah, the junk toys. Yeah. Oh my gosh. Are you ready? Yeah, I'm ready to go. Okay, how are we gonna remember to, um, Wash the cloth. And after milking, will you help me catch chickens? Ready left, that's what happened. Yeah, I know, she's good about cleaning those. And he's on Christmas vacation. I actually love when we have so much to do. One less worry for me. I don't have to worry about content. Happy to say I remembered the cloth. Got the laundry going. I want to go do the chickens so then we can go to get Lowe's for this part. But guess what? We're getting the error codes again on both of them, Rebecca. Well, I don't know, the guy who just said I needed to connect them to the internet. Yeah, so we keep unplugging it and plugging back in. That's not sustainable. It's the day after Christmas. I doubt we're gonna get anybody out here to get to connect to the internet. We need to set up our We've been using our Starlink without a password, and we need it. They need a password to be able to connect to the internet. Why, I don't know, but I'm supposed to get a Starlink identifier. Oh boy. Okay, I can get up here. Great. Where is this? Ask Brock, where's the Starlink identifier? Check the hardware standards, look on the back. Of the Starlink near the connector port. Hey, do you guys want to go start? You guys want a cow tip for the day? Talk about how we process it. I show this all the time, but do I ever talk about it? All right, half gallon jars, stainless steel funnel to a— it's got stainless steel ring. You put one of this milk filter clean milk filters, Tuffy. You shove the filter down in there and you put the ring in. That's all we're doing. For processes in this raw milk. We definitely don't want to pasteurize or homogenize. That's why we're getting raw milk. We want all the vitamins, we want all the enzymes. After all these years, I still can't quite, quite guesstimate how much will fill up a half a gallon jar. Half a gallon jars. I did it, I timed that one right. For years, we used to put it in a cooler, the milk, ice cooler after we're done, get it down to 40 degrees within an hour. And we hung on to that a long time. We went to the Dohertys, who are just legit homesteaders. If there's anybody that's a legit homesteader, you know, growing what they eat and eating when they grow— the Dohertys. Look, I nailed that one too. Good thing because I'm not paying attention. So you're gonna run a single strand to it because we've got to put We've got to get it out in the sun and run a couple of posts. You guys want to see the, uh— oh, look, look at the cook in there. So hey, we filtered it. You ever see anything fishy, like, oh, is that poop? Is that not poop? When in doubt, throw it out. I'm teaching you guys how to keep a family cow forever flowing milk. Jenny, that's some live Friday, Saturday, Sunday, live at 2 PM, 3 days. We don't need the cooler. There's so many steps we've knocked out. Some of the benefits— I mean, that's 8— well, a gallon is 8, 8 pounds. 14 pounds. 14 pounds of food. That's a lot. And if that's all we had, that'd be enough for our family to survive in a pinch. Let it sit for a while, at least a day, and your cream naturally rises to the top because it's non-homogenized. And then all you do— I'm not going to do it right now because just side will kill me. We gotta go do the chickens. Just take a little ladle, get the cream off the top. I mean, we put it in quart size and we'll use that as cream and tea or desserts or whatever. For more than a quart, that's what we're going to drink is cream. We put in a half a gallon jar. Once we've got a half a gallon jar of cream, it's gonna have to be another day. Um, well, you've probably seen that here on this channel. We put it in the gallon butter churner and make butter. Incredible what you can do with milk. Drink it. Oh, yogurt. Saw me make that the other day. Just add a little bit of yogurt to get it started, put it in the dehydrator— not to dehydrate it, but to heat it. Put it in the dehydrator, 105, 7, 24 hours, and you have raw yogurt. You cannot buy raw yogurt. And we haven't even talked about cheese. I got more cow tricks up my sleeve, a lot more. Live on Abundance Plus, January 5th. Join us. Become a member. You got sick of waiting on me? He's on it. Getting it done. Does that work? Yep. Yeah, but we can't put it in there, remember? It's on the other side. Oh really? Yeah, but then we have to go to the other side to tend the chickens. So, all right, can we come— can we come herd all the chickens in there? No, how'd you want to do that? Come on, I'm gonna lose them if I don't— if I don't go. I really want to put these chickens in, but he's gonna lose heart. I don't want him to— I don't want Josiah to lose heart. We're on track for— and we, and, and we gotta fix the track loader, so that's gonna have to wait. Is this wise? Almost half an hour to Lowe's, half an hour back, half hour there. That's an hour and a half. Could call Mark and not have to go anywhere, and then I could be working on the chickens and shearing and trimming the sheep hooves and everything else I need to do. My times were something. So here, let's go get the car seat in this thing. Short term, this immediate fix, I'm not sure it's worth it. Um, long term though, and maybe this being Josiah learning how to fix a machine himself, it may be worth it. And let's get not one not just one of the pieces we need, double. And so that way if it happens again, we'll be prepared. Is this it? You gotta find a bolt. Okay, wait, I think we can do that. Then can we just grease it? Can we grease it after we do everything? Oh yeah, prevention is the best maintenance, right? Take the kids. Grandpa gave them some money for Christmas and it's burning a hole in their pocket. Josiah's already annoyed because he just wants to go and get back and fix it. And that's another thing too, if we do that, I can get him on fixing the machine and then I can finish the farm, the chicken job. Also, we'll get Josiah some driving driver's ed hours. Sia told me I need to teach them how to save. I think you learned that yourself. He's a good saver, he and Jonah. How do we teach them how to save? I don't know. Don't let them spend. Don't let them spend money, huh? When they're 18, they'll be out of control because they never learn any self-control if I do all the controlling. Find it. This is part of the problem of going to town. Got to get everybody ready. Okay, go! Let's go! You want to go to the consignment store first or Lowe's? Wow. Hey, would you be okay if we got toys somewhere else? Yeah, other than Lowe's. Uh, yeah, there's a toy store at the consignment shop. You want to go there? But what? The one— why don't we go? I don't know. Leave this back. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. This is just cheap. He's on a budget. Toys at Lowe's. What's your budget, Henry? Why consume? We have toys that have already been made. Let's reuse them. I don't know if there's anything here, Henry. All right, they didn't really have anything, did they, Henry? Yes, they did. Okay, well, we got to go get Mama comb. All right, we tried local, we tried to reuse. Gideon is talking about a hamster though. Should I get you a hamster, Gideon? Yes. Okay, Mom said if you do chicken chores one week straight, you can't take care of chickens, you can't take care of a hamster. Okay, it's a good deal. So that— you've been wanting that. Don't just buy something today just because you got money in your pocket, okay? Get what you want. Take it. So I'm not tempted. Okay, I used to do that with my dad. You just gave me 50? Yeah, that's a lot for a 10-year-old. Let's see what he's getting into if he's gonna get a hamster. We're just looking. Okay, live animals this way. Cages. These are reptiles. Look at all these fish! Oh no, they don't have any furry animals anymore. Is this them? Those are birds. I didn't know they were so big. Yeah, he would want a rat right now. Oh my gosh, they do sell fancy rats. Hamsters are right up here. Wait, Guinea. And this one is cuter than a rat, but there's nobody here. Here's a Chinese dwarf hamster female. Oh wait, look, there is one in here. Let me see. Okay, so now you know the price, Gideon. These are $22, $23. Here it is, here it is right here. Let me see. All right, now we know you don't want to buy a new cage. We'll get one on Facebook Marketplace. I want to get a fun cage and maybe a hamster on Facebook Marketplace. Yeah, maybe what you want is a guinea pig. I don't know. No, um, the day after Christmas, yeah, everybody's got money to burn. Henry, there is nothing here. And Or a toy pizza set. It looks like heavy. I don't think he wants a place. He doesn't seem to be getting excited about this. I was gonna say there were Legos. Not a good Legos, man. Okay, note to self: do not go to Toys for Kids the day after Christmas. There's something, but I don't know why you just get something because That's all they got. Now this could go with your Hot Wheels, right? That's fine if you like this. Go, go with your Hot Wheels. What kind? You got combs? You got brushes? Here, you think she just wants a normal comb? She's got a 99-cent comb and then scissors. Mom's cutting their own hair, which, golly, saves us hundreds of dollars over time, doesn't it, Josie? She's pretty good, isn't she? We were a lot faster in there than I thought. Lowe's Homestead Store. It's not a homestead store. This is half inch. There's something. It's maybe just a hair too small. I think that's it. This one does not fit. No, that was a little one. It was already out of the bag. How'd y'all hold up? Turned it into a racetrack. Home sweet home. You know, I guess we didn't just go get a bolt. Went to get the boys their toy, then we got some stuff at Target, so we turned it into a town trip. So we need some other things, so we're going anyway. All right, what's the problem? He says the nut's not going on it. We don't have them. These are just— oh, anyway, okay, so this is the side that works. No, this is the side that's broken. How do you get that out of there? You gotta unscrew it on the other side. That's probably a specialty nut. Dang, I swear I was looking at a mirror. Why? Wow, you look— oh my gosh, in that flannel shirt, you look like me in the '90s. I am tripping out. Hey boy, oh boy, oh boy. And, and, and, oh boy. I need to be in writing the outline for the, the, the cow workshop, finish it. In the little booklet. Jonas says he's got all the stuff to hoof the sheep. I want to get those chickens in. We got to get these bolts— this figured out. I am so sad. Asheville Nut and Bolts was down in Biltmore. Such a handy place for stuff like this. We could have just walked in, they would have just got— went and gotten us the exact nut. They got washed away in the hurricane. They still aren't back. How did you get the other one off? It was not as hard. It had like a crack, but this one, it's right here, but you can't get there. Uh, can we spin it to where that crack is accessible? I mean, how are you gonna spin it? You're getting a grip. That, that hammer, is it starting to come? There you got it. Yeah, that's a special— well, oh man, I wish we had a nuts and bolts place. It's proven harder to get this other one out so we can look at it. The place where we got this is closed. That's probably where we need to ask, ask them. Is this the biggest socket, Rich? Well, we don't need to get it out. We need to get the one that's working out. Why? Because I don't think it's in right. Oh, it's not in right? No. How's it supposed to be in? Well, look at this one. This is how it's supposed to look, and this is how this one looks. See how it's like flush in there? Up against that, but this one's not. That's the bolt, and then there's the big pin. Oh, so are we missing— no, we're not missing anything. This has to be rearranged. Yes, it has to be flipped. So we don't have a socket wrench that big? Maybe somewhere, I don't know. Well, maybe I'll send you and Joe's— Jonah to get us a real socket set. We're gonna start doing this, we gotta have the right tools. Should we? This is like a pain. Okay, here's, here's the biggest one we got, right? Yeah, it's not big enough. It needs to go on this side. Okay, problem is nothing can get in here to hold it. So let me unscrew— oh, I bet you I could use a, uh, crescent wrench or a channel lock spinning in there. So we need to get a way to— we need to get a way to support this. Add shop cloths to the— this paper towel. Fancy tool here, stick. Dennis needs to think. This bolt that has all the parts is just, uh, what, out of order? They did find a large enough socket. You need a 1-inch, but this took the socket set, so you guys need to go get us a socket set for 1-inch. Now, there was one cool thing about if we fix our own stuff, we're gonna get some tools and still save money. We're gonna try the old, uh, grab a hold of this socket with a lot of channel locks. It's Boxing Day. Did you guys— am I the only one finding out today there's a holiday called Boxing Day? That's the day after Christmas. Try locking in over there. Channel locks. What? Lock it on this side. So we're missing the tool. So get, get a socket wrench that will fit this and then buy another kit so we have another one. We need a socket wrench big enough for these guys, and then we need another set so that we can be on the other side. Well, we have to. Okay, then we're getting Mark out here. That is up there at the shed. Okay, go get it. We need a nut for this. We tried Lowe's, it wasn't right, so I have to go to John Deere. No, they're closed today. Yeah, so we're not getting anything. Well, you could go to Fletcher Lawn and Garden if they're open. That's the nut we got. Where is the thing? Uh, dang it, it is way fun. That is way funner. All right, go get— guys, I promise. Can you go to bed? Well, I'll call them. Say Target. What's up, y'all? We're clear. Just seeing if y'all were open today. Yes, sir. All right, you got nuts and bolts there, don't you? Yes, sir, we do. Okay, thanks. The local hardware store's open. Nice. I think that kind of place you can just go in and say, can you help me find a nut for this bolt? And that's all we're missing. We don't need a washer or anything. We already have a washer. Okay, and get us a— see if they have a socket set. Putting this back on, you need to get the socket tool and then a whole nother socket set. Okay, I'm learning all kinds of things. Don't you mechanics laugh at me. I guess this is the drive size. I think that's half inch. Brock says it's common for mechanics, car mechanics. I'd say that's, that's a half inch. Yep. Okay, so I'm gonna see, instead of buying a whole set, can I just buy these missing pieces Do you find it up there? No. Okay, so we need a socket wrench with a half-inch drive size. Okay, okay, half-inch drive. We have these bolts, and then we need to get us another— well, shoot, we can probably— if you could see if they sell sockets individually. Why are you using 5/16? Because I guess I could. I'm gonna— I'll trim the sheep puffs then while you're— and the other one is a foot— is an inch. Yeah. A foot socket set, that would be quite a— yeah, sheep's rubbing on the fence and getting out. All right, I guess I should be the one that goes. Jonah's offered to stay and do the sheep. How am I gonna film that and go to the shop at the same time? Show me doing one, and I'm not gonna do them all. Like, a lot of them are fine. Let's get their pan out of there too before they poop on it. Yeah, I think that's That's the one who had the baby. That one? Yeah, yeah. We should make a note of who that is, who miscarried. Do you know who that is? I think this one's gonna have it. It's a— it's a yellow tag. What does that mean? That one that's laying down, I'm gonna jump on it. I'll show you. For clipping, I thought— I thought you need to put them all in a corner with a cage. I'll remember. How you gonna know who you've done and who you didn't do? I just remember. That one's not too bad. No, I'm just gonna— are you not gonna trim them at all? I'm gonna trim it. How are you gonna know who you've done and who you haven't done? I can— I'm not gonna do everybody's because look, not everybody has bad hoofs. All right, I guess I don't need to stay and see them all. Kind of boring. Jonah, you clean this concrete up nice. Looks good. Well, here we go again. Is it worth it? Fix your own stuff? Might be a curve here in the beginning, so we get the right tools. I got through the main really bad one. Okay, what about Ike? Did you do him? I'll wait for somebody to wrestle him with me. Well, Lily's right there. All right, before we go, I forgot our, our, our, our, our nut, our bolt. See this? And Jonah can help you. It's got a grease fitting on the end of it. Okay, okay, I have a part number. It's about a half inch. It goes in right here. Okay, so I don't know if you can find parts based on that. I'll try to find a part schematic. Yeah, and see what I can find. If not, don't worry too much about it because I bet we can find this nut. Oh, we not do Ike while we're at it? No, he's good. Um, no, come on, he's not good. Hey, what's wrong? There's no water coming into this. It's because it's just not turned on. Well, well, let's get the water going. And let's get that, uh, truck heater upright. Beauty just sent me this. Well, we're on it. She found out how to order these parts because it's gonna be a specialty piece. We're just gonna go ahead and order the whole set and have them for parts. Local hardware store. Let's see if we can get the right nut for us today just to get us by. Look, that's what we need, right? A fine— oh look, you can test it. Which one's it going into better? This one. So it's a fine? Okay, well then let's find a 5/8 fine. Is that gonna be it? I mean, I think— I don't know if it's just— they did have a half-inch drive socket, $26, so don't lose that again. That fits. Nut bolt in there until we get another one. We're just gonna have to move that out of the way. Hey, will it move? Hey, just— I would move these grapples, or do you have to get the Mini X and move those? I put the bolt, the nut in. Laying out some lamb chops for tonight. We think we got it. John Deere place is open. Good news, the John Deere dealer has it. All you got to do is go over there with the credit card. Just as I was about to get to work on that booklet, the youth group got out. We've worked all day together, haven't we? Poor Josiah's been to town 3 times. What are you looking for? The bolt. The old one? Yeah. Remember where we put it? No. You said to put it in there. Yeah, and you didn't. I don't see it. Oh, this is it, huh? Yeah. Okay, we need to put these in baggies and label them nice. The nut fits. Did you put a washer in? Did you put a washer in on this side? Yep. You sure? Yeah. Well, you're not gonna believe this, there's no way our socket's gonna reach in there. Oh, you get an extender. Do we have one? Uh-oh. My, I wish we would have just— see, but this, this fits in there. I don't know if anybody would have had an extension though. Wait, you're doing it, dude. It's hitting— it's the vice grips are hitting the edge and it's tightening it. Hey, we're fixing stuff, boys. I'm aware. Let's see if we're fixing big things. Hey, wait, let it warm up. Seems to be working. Hey, do the interlocks still work? Right Yeah, they do. 3 trips to town, but we're fixing stuff ourselves. We're fixing machines. We're fixing machines. I'm so proud of you guys. Lamb chops. How are you liking your toy? Huh? How do you like that, Henry? Do you want to show them what it does? Whoa! What? It's a big car party. It's a big car party. Ready? Get in, get in. Yeah, you made it. How's it, Vic? Grandpa Henry would be proud. Look at that, two thumbs up. Full meal from the farm. One of the guys I follow on X said if a nice piece of red meat doesn't appeal to you, you're not hungry enough. I'm very hungry. This is very appealing. Fixing our own machines, boys. How's that feel? How's it feel to fix your own machines? Save a couple hundred dollars. I think it was more than a couple hundred dollars. Well, we learned a lot today, didn't we? Happy day.
