I’m Changing Tonight

Victor Justin Rhodes documents a day on his family homestead, from fixing fences after cattle wandered overnight to repairing a freeze-dryer and butchering livestock. He's doing daily shoulder stretches to avoid surgery, running a "family apprenticeship" model where errands teach his kids, and finishing a 28-day water fast refeed phase.

See that? Yeah, the cows are out. I just gave Rebecca full permission to ask me in the evening, did you test the fence? Me? I give y'all full permission. Should I give you full permission to heckle me in the comments? Because somebody's gonna anyway if I do not go test that fence tonight. Full permission to heckle me. How about that? That's going to keep me accountable. And henceforth, we need a reading on the fences. This low light in the morning kind of has a cozy, romantic feel. That's nice. Hey, that's on blue light, bro. Change it. So I quit through. How you doing, man? I'm happy to see you up and at them. You did good on the kitchen last night. He worked hard last night, got the kitchen all back in order. Everybody was feeling good after the party. That party couldn't have been better, right guys? That group chat blowing up. You should blow their chat up right now, early in the morning. Our kids are the farmers. That's your kind of group, isn't it? You just get each other. They just get each other. Those cows are meandering on back. I don't want them to go up there because then they're gonna get the, the calves all excited and somebody's gonna get out. Somebody's going back up the road. Dang it. Great, that's great. Then I'll chase them farther. No, because then the— if the calves are out, they're gonna find each other. You didn't test the fence, bro. I did. Oh, what was it reading at? 10, like 5. What? Something like 5. Are you mumbling about just to register? Grow fast. I know it's hitting at 5. No, no, you don't. You didn't test it. Okay, there's a lot can go wrong from here to there. The cows ended up meandering on back up there, so we went up there to see what was going on, and one of the little fences had become disconnected. So that meant the whole paddock for the sheep was off. That could have been fixed last night if we would have tested it last night, but I get so tired in the evening. I get so tired. Finally going out. It's a little late start, isn't it? Yeah, normally I'm freaking out if it's 8 and they're not out there yet. It's 9, but since we were out there just testing, I think we'll be all right. He's into that. I think he's group texting right now. They were all group texting last night. I said, group text tonight, 6:45, when I wake your butt up. Let's see who the farmers are. You guys got this? You need help? Nope, this is a different stage. They actually don't want me to go. They don't want me to go. I actually want to go. I love the outside work. I need— but you know what my work right now is? Feeling the shoulder. Oh my gosh, call the Inquirer. He's pulling it out and organizing it. Can you sweep it while you got them all out? Sure. Just about a month ago The doctor said, you're going to have to have surgery. Your shoulders aren't making enough progress. It's this one. Okay. I've made, I've made some, I've made a lot of progress since then. We have 9 days to my next doctor's appointment. I cannot miss a day of stretching. We've got to go in there and say, there you go, buddy. There you go. There you go. I don't need no stinking surgery. I don't know who needs no stinking surgery. We'll do my stretches back and forth between in here and here with Mama. Knock out two birds with a stone. Visit people and stretch. Chickens. The chickens. I've gotta feed the chickens. Gideon, we gotta go feed the chickens, bro. Problem is I've got 35 minutes till a phone call. There's no way I can stretch and feed the chickens in that time, but we're going to try. Well, stretching takes 40 minutes. Butter. Okay, you are literally— hey, hey, hey, you're literally, you're literally You literally, you literally, you literally, you're— wow, he's responding to my voice. You're literally biting the hand that feeds you, bro. Literally. Look, that's what biting the hand that feeds you means. I hand washed that stuff. Wow, cuz it was kind of greasy. Good job. I didn't want to hand wash this cuz it might— we might need I didn't want to do it. She ever so gently requested that a couple days ago, so now I've kept it on my mind. Lucky me, because usually it takes until they get upset, doesn't it, gentlemen? We've got to get on this call right now, and I just found out that our Harvest Right is coming back. It went off for repair. That's our freeze dryer. They've got to get the forks on. Rebecca, I think they might be here. Boys, are you here? Are y'all here? Oh good. One of you, please, whoever's outside, go get the forks on the skid steer and get it ready for FedEx. From one crazy thing to the next, we had a good phone call. We're looking at distribution for my self-published books. We'll see you, Dar. All right, get some rest. I am. I'm gonna go get my license renewed. Wish me luck. Rainy days always throw me off. I never planned for them. But this actually ends up being a good thing to do on a rainy day. Okay, is that my drink or your drink, Josiah? Choose. I've had juice. You guys have what? No, it's Heather's. Do not touch that. Hey, we're gonna be driving pretty soon to go get your license, bro. Yeah. All right, you pull in front, Josiah. Your destination is on the right. And then this is it, and then you find a parking spot. How'd the kids do? Josiah was gone good, 1.5 hours. How did y'all occupy yourselves? Uh, watch stuff. Dads, take your kids every chance you get. Mom needs a rest. Mom wants a rest. She's your number one. She's your queen. Treat her so. I took my kids to the DMV, y'all, and if Josiah wasn't here, I would have took these two inside and, and take the ones that are difficult too, the younger, hyper, rambunctious ones. Our goal is that they become men. That's everybody's goal, right? Contributing citizens of society for our children. Well then, how better to train them, school them, than that they shadow me? Apprenticeship. Immerse and learn what it means to be a man and a contributing citizen. So they come with us. There's no better education that they'd spend time with those kinds of people, with adults, and preferably you as their parent, me as their parent. And if you're just doing errands, look, I don't know if he's faking or if he's going to sleep, but just in the car Come on, it's not that hard. And even if it's hard, it's right. We are back. It is still raining. We are not complaining because we need it. It's a cold rain. We're gonna stay hidden. What are you doing? Trying to blacksmith a little bit. Yeah, how's it going? Fine. Well, let me see your work. I just started really. I haven't even pulled it out. You heat it up in here. Yeah, you got some metal? That's funny. What are you gonna make? I'm gonna make a sort of a knife. All right. Whoa, that's gonna have to get so hot. Rebecca got an alarming notice from the dentist that she needs to go get checked out at ear, nose, and throat. So they think you might have an infection or something? I don't know. Severe— severe mucus. They are watching really old vlogs. That looks like Henry in that Mr. Brown, You're So Little. Was that 2016? Use the other hand. Two hands. There we go. I think this is the first Crunchmas you filmed. Yeah, they like these old ones. Billy made some bagels. I kind of wonder what happened to this one. Where were we in this workout? Oh, I think I just did one set of push-ups. Warm up. Back to the music. Had to take a break. Gotta eat a little Last meal of the day before it gets too late. It's 3 o'clock. Raw egg, red sauerkraut, purple sauerkraut, salmon, beef bits, homemade sour cream. Mmm, I'm into it, man. Can you guys help me with the super cubes? No, Josiah will do the Ziplocs and then you'll do the broth. Well, you can't do it yet. You relax. You guys can watch TV while you do it. Gideon, I want you to clean up while you watch TV, okay? Did you get the knives? Yeah, they're over there. You looked at them, you saw them. Did you get the Gambrella set up? Did you get the blue bin over there so we can get ice? Did you make sure the ice machine is working? Did you check it? Yeah. You needed to get going. Oh, and you got it going? Yeah. Let's get the blue bin over there. All right. And then what else? Did you get something to catch guts in when we're butchering over there? Okay. Wow. Okay. All right. The family just destroyed some Mexican stuff. Well, we did too. Had some beef, cheese, sour cream. All seems to be doing okay with me. I water fast for 28 days, so towards the— I'm at the very end of the refeed. Papa, I just realized something. Why is she being broody in there? No, but I'm gonna get her out. Why? Because I forgot to this morning. She can be in there. Oh, is it today we got to get her out? Yeah. Okay, let's see if she's broody. I think I'm without Rebecca. She's under the weather right now, or tired. Concerned about the sinus infection. She's— the dentist is referring her to an ear, nose, and throat. She broody in there, sitting on the grass. Oh good, we might have broke her. Hold on, let me help you. Yes, she doesn't look broody. She looks like maybe her brood is broke. Why are you in there? Why are you in there? Because I was trying to catch her without her jumping out. Okay, quick, quick! Ah, oh geez! Come over, get her, get her in that corner! Boy, she's quick. Come on, get over there! There you go. All right, hopefully she's broke because when they go broody they don't lay eggs. Big Daddy and I going on a walk. You can't come, it's raining. I'll be back. And I'm back. And what is going on here? You're not getting that gun wet, are you? No, it's under the building. Don't worry. You sure? Yeah. Is that why the— okay, you did that with doing— okay, killing a pig at one point. Okay, see it. Don't take it out in the rain though. You're not aiming so high you're gonna hit that cabin, are you? You see a little white paper? Oh, okay..22 Magnum, homesteaders. If you could only have one gun, that's the one. If you can have two, get you a.410 shotgun. Nightlights, bro. There you go. Some beef bones for tomorrow. More ground burger. Oh, Basket. My birthday's coming up. Rebecca has something very special planned. You doing a little remote Battleship? Yeah. Who's winning? I am so far. Okay, calling it right there. We gotta get some sleep. Going down with the sun. Sheep tomorrow. Let's go! We're out of lamb. Let's go! It's the end of the year. Let's go! Tomorrow.
