I'm Freaking Out About Moving Across the Street

Justin and Rebecca move their family homestead across the street while planning a major remodel, juggling farm work, health issues, and the pressure to grow their YouTube channel. He gained 26,000 subscribers in a month and is working to finish remodel plans by April 1 while managing the chaos of daily farm tasks and family life.

Good morning, Winnie.
Papa, look!
What? She's in lay. Boxes calling my name. We are moving out of the holler house. We are moving across the street to the cabin. First, we need to purge all our stuff. We're gonna remodel the holler house. And it is gonna become the ultimate homestead house. We've got some incredible plans, and I can't wait for you guys to see it. Gideon, can you go get the egg basket from the garage?
Come on, I want to get packed.
Who's gonna pack you?
Come on, it's fine.
That's it.
Mean, she's blind.
She's protecting her homestead. Oh, it was left on last night. Oh shoot, I just broke the handle. I reckon the handle broke because it's frozen out here. See the shadow on the house there? Yeah, the sun. Okay. This is the north side, and this just, just stays colder over here. A lot colder. What we can get away with on the other side of the house, like leaving the faucet attached when it's only like not going to get even below 32, you can't do that over here. It's not frozen, so I don't know if that was our problem. We might have had a faulty shutoff. Yeah, the line's not frozen. Must be the connection. I can't be having this run in between uses, so I went and found some sort of shutoff. Not the best, but something to get us by so we can get the best. Haha, I kid you not, it's leaking. I thought I saw a washer in here. There ain't no washer in here. I don't know what it is. I feel really overwhelmed and stressed out about everything right now. I told Rebecca, I said, I told her this morning, I said I just need to calm down. I need to enjoy my life. I feel pressure to do good by the farm chores, be— do good by the movies, do good by this purging and remodel and the homestead builds book I'm working on. And I have some ideas for some topical YouTube videos, like one on the gravity-fed water system to the 2 acres. For reference, what I'm shooting now is a vlog, but you know, sometimes I would want to do a topical thing. We got the washer, and you know what I tell people in homesteading when they get overwhelmed is you're really just trying to do too much, and you've got to prioritize what is going to be most effective towards getting to you, towards your goal. That washer fit kind of weird. Here I am making a movie about fixing a water hose shutoff. It's not going to be viral. It's not going to be a viral video. Why do I care about a viral video? Well, there's nothing like a viral video to grow the channel, and we all want growth, right? If we're not growing, we're just being stagnant. And I'm not getting this in. I want to be the most helpful to people. Those end up being viral because they're of great interest to lots of people, and many of you will make it in the comments, say saying, you know what, this is what we like about the show because we have trouble with our hose ends too, and we want to be doing something else, but we're having to deal with this hose end that's boring and uninteresting and annoying. Kenny, can you come kink this hose? And you know, I, I know my attitude's probably not the best because I'm stressed out. Kenny, can you come hold this hose and My attitude is going to reflect— it's going to end up being what the children's attitude is going to be. Hey, hey, thank you. We've stopped the water. Can we get this on? I think I did it. Okay, go ahead. The goal was to be in there and start purging by 9. It's 9:20, but we fixed the hose problem. Yeah, she's right. Yeah, why didn't I get it yesterday? How did I forget? You're right. But did you see yesterday's shows? 240 clips of doing stuff. Maybe the wood chips were more important. I think we can milk in there. They are out of water. When I'm in Florida and I'm on vacation, I had all the time in the world. I dream about what I want to do in 2023, and I even had some fun doing a little daily journal and posting those to Instagram while I was gone and thinking about trying to carry back. That just seems like there's no way. And I'm trying to launch an Earthworks YouTube channel, long-form videos of what we're doing with the machines. And have you noticed I've been, uh, prioritizing and putting up YouTube Shorts, which have been a lot of fun and have been really good for growing the channel. We've grown like 26,000 subscribers in a month. Our normal rate was like 6,000 subs a month, and so that's important for growth. That's got to be one of the most important things. Hey, what's wrong? You— I'll go get wood chips, you go get the milk supplies, get them in Henry cart. There's Henry cart. And bring them down there. Why do you only see this wood when we have problems? I mean, to its credit, it did go well while we were on vacation and weeks before, but now I'm back. And it's not holding the fire. It went out last night and we ended up having to boil water for Mom's bath. I don't think these coals are lit, but why didn't the fan run and keep them lit? Nice. Is this your favorite? What's its name? You named it Hope, did she? There's two options in overwhelm, and you might combine them both, and that's cut back and/or get help. Good job getting that stuff. I've got Josiah getting the wood chips because I need to start the wood boiler fire. I've got help on the new Earthworks channel that we're gonna— we've got a filmer, we've got editor, we also have the boys learning to operate loving to operate. That shouldn't involve me too much. That's too tight. Dump it over into the bedding. You could pull it on here and we'll just get it out of the bucket with our forks for right now. Okay, just for— just, just to get us milking and then we'll figure something out. I was thinking you could dump it directly in there, but I don't know if you can get that close. Okay, then dump it directly in there.
Okay, a little sketchy there.
Okay, tilt it.
Same thing with your farm house. That's working. Yeah, this is good.
That's not gonna work. Sabina must be in heat. Oh, Manzo, bless your heart, you're castrated. I hope his castration took. Do they do that when they're castrated? Well, that's why we didn't spay her. They wanted some kittens, so maybe that'll work out. Let's double-check this. And for the book, guys, if I'm really gonna write a book and it's gonna be really nice, it's on our permaculture build, like the Chickshaw. That's the 3.0. We've come up with a 5.0, and people want the plants. You guys, if I have a number one request from you guys, it's plans for all my homestead builds. I think it took now. What do you think? Yeah, since there's so little room right here, which we need to build it up, we'll take the machine, build a retaining wall, and we'll have access through here to dump in the winter. A little bit of a design flaw there, except the plan was to get it filled before the winter, and I think last year we did, but this year we didn't. Gonna move those bales, then we can get in here and we can get 15 loads of wood chips. I gotta tell Rebecca See if some breakfast was made too. Oh no, Becky, did you not eat breakfast?
No, I haven't. I totally forgot.
Oh snap, I'm stressing out so bad. Don't, don't stress out.
You're okay.
Hey, you're okay. Do I have COVID or something?
No.
Remember that time I was so depressed? Yeah, and I just ended up having COVID.
You better not have COVID. We're having surgery on Thursday. It doesn't feel like that depression, but I think what you have is after-vacation freakout because you just spent Yeah. 2 weeks not doing anything.
It felt like I had all the time in the world.
And now it feels like you have no time in the world because we are very busy because this week has been extra.
We either have to scale down or get some help.
Take the pressure off this week.
Mm-hmm.
Not try to pack this week.
Okay.
I think we need to get back into our groove from being on vacation. For Henry's birthday, I'm ordering him a little like 6-volt ride-on tractor. Tractor. It's like electric, so it's like smaller. That's how big that— the one that I was originally looking at is like that size. He can't use that, so I'm getting that one. And then I found a little tractor book for him.
His birthday is next Thursday, next week. Yeah, so a week from Jonah's surgery. Jonah, you must have practiced for your eye test.
Yeah.
How'd you do on it yesterday? I passed.
He did.
I took a picture. One step closer to his license. Okay, good. Gideon, you have to be with me. I don't know if I've been this late in a while. We usually beat the sun. You're letting me milk it now. Gotta be persistent. Hey, why not get the office work done and planning in the sunshine? Exactly. Maybe that'll make you feel better.
I hope so.
I'm starting to feel better. You've talked me off my ledge.
Good.
I'm gonna do the planning.
Bless your heart.
She's working on the, the remodel plans.
Well, with the draftsman, but I'm going to this afternoon. Okay, like we're gonna get real construction plans from—
heck yes. Do you think between now and April 1st, we— if we just work on it an hour, 2 hours a day, we'll be able to get it done?
100%.
Okay, then I'm happy. Yeah, I think that's— I don't think— because that's what I did with 100 Days of Clearing.
Yeah, and the thing is, is that it's right over there.
This is coming from a guy who's literally moved one time in his life.
I know.
I've moved once.
Justin moved from 3 miles down the road from where he grew up to here.
Yeah.
The family farm.
And now he's moving across the street. And then I'll move back here and he'll probably die here.
I guess it's just this rooted boy Freaking out.
Yeah, you're freaking out. Freaking out about moving across the street. He's gonna tell us how many doors we need and how many windows.
The builder we're getting to help us will understand this.
Yeah, my dad will understand this. That one.
Your dad's helping us. In the meantime, this is what's happening to our boxes.
Dad!
I'm just gonna have to live with it. It's been too long since I've trained, and that might be messy. Let's get the blood flowing, see if that helps. And Rebecca says, when you can't tone, tan. Good sunshine, good training, two birds with one stone. That's my medicine for today. That's gonna do the trick. Are you supposed to be riding that tractor in here? Jonah's gonna finish covering up this culvert. This will add a significant— well, for us, a significant amount of pasture. Because before, what are you gonna do, go graze that little patch over there? No. And then this little patch over here? No. If we put a culvert in, this all becomes one. Shall we try to put the seal on?
Sure.
You hold it and I'll pull it out. I think it's propped up nice. I think you got to keep it propped up. Is it getting on this hard?
Yeah, it's getting on pretty hard.
There's no pushing that on there by hand. Well, we got it. Okay, but start by putting dirt around it and let it get underneath there.
I see, like push it under.
Yeah, you feel pretty good on that machine, isn't he? Proud of that guy.
Make sure I was going in the right direction. Yeah, no, it sounds like you are.
How'd the meeting go?
It went good, went good. It was just technical, like, um, going over electrical, what I would want for lighting.
Guys, I'm getting an office.
I know, I'm very excited.
That's more than a corner.
I need to look at a couple things for him and then make some decisions. The beginning of decisions is starting and it's already like, I have no idea.
There's gonna be a lot of decisions coming up. We're trying to find the TV spot, which it's kind of cool that we didn't prioritize that.
We're just not thinking about it.
It's not a priority.
We don't watch a lot of TV, but we do watch some, and we do watch it once a week together as a family like that. So it's kind of like we're thinking this is our living room right here.
Yeah, fireplace.
Place here.
That's where the, the sunroom is going to go. We're going to take advantage of the south-facing side. And you're thinking the TV would go right here?
No, no, right here.
That means the TV will be about right here.
It would be in this area. So from this, this wall to about here, I believe, is a place for TV.
I think that's good. I mean, we're going to orient couches this way.
This isn't going to be here, and we're not going to have the couch this close because this is going to be a gigantic opening. Yeah, so the couch will become closer. And the type of TV that I want to get, it looks like a picture frame, so it looks like a—
that makes sense—
like a picture. It doesn't look like a TV.
Yeah, good job. Look at these pork rinds. Killer. It's a carnivore's corn chip. Goes well with the, um, the Mexican beef she made tonight. Beautiful plate, darling. How is it, fellow carnivores?
Good. It's not so good, but it's a healthy plate.
Is that taking a good substitute for chips? Yeah. You want me to talk to you? Are you grunting to get talked to? You want me to show you're a male and you eating? You want to say bye to the vloggers? Say bye-bye. He says you're crazy. Who's leaving?
Honey, I hope he's leaving.
Oh yeah, he waved out there.
