Inside a Macro Homestead on a Typical Fall Day

Arun, Lily, Rebecca, Jonah, and Henry handle a flooded waterer, clip chicken wings, rescue a calf that broke through the fence, and restock supplies at Tractor Supply. Rebecca gets dental work done, and the day ends with a homemade milkshake on their cooking show.

This isn't working. We got a flood right there. Overflow right there.
It's leaking right there at the top.
You try your other one now, Lily. We had success.
They need to get— they need to get Do you feed them grass every day, Natalie?
Yeah, looks good. You just want to watch again during the little animal chores, check the boys' jobs. Fence is on, chick shawls or meat shawls moved, water set up. Although that's not going to end well, they must be thirsty. Jonah, there's no water here, bro. He said he has gotten it going and it does look like it's going. It must have. I think we're having to share the hose with the cows right now. So does it not ever go very fast?
Oh no, they're sitting on it and it's pushing the valve down. Yeah, that's gross.
Yeah, it's gross. I'm gonna clean it out. I think it just got— it splashed in my mouth. Great. They were stepping on the automatic waterer, pushing it down, therefore shutting off the water flow.
That's better.
They have overturned the grit. And I believe we're completely out, so we need to go harvest some. You guys grab Henry cart and I'll get the sifter.
Here, put this in there.
That ought to buy us some time. Let's catch that chicken and clip its wings. Hopefully that tames them a little bit. We can't keep them in a poultry net. We're gonna— I'm not gonna be able to keep them in a sheep net when we eventually get them up there behind the cows and sheep.
They got it. Good.
Set her down. Good. Looks like they have grit. Let's try not to spill. Get it all into the barrel, please. Did these two Did you mate Lily? No.
All right, he tried to make her head.
He did? He did try to make her head, but she was against the bars. Okay.
And, um, by the way, he's learning. Penny, by the way, bit— I think bit her, um, the other one's ear from the bars.
Oh boy. All right, let's get them back to their own territory. All right, everybody needs to grab something. We're not moving them today. These, these, these vertical or these really steep, really narrow paddocks. We do let them just have it for 2 days and then we move them on. Good. How are we doing? We're getting better every day, a little bit. Foxy's calf busted through the fence and we just put the vitamin E on, so it needs to be a while. So let's get the calf over and spot it until we get the fence back on. The problem is we have to turn that fence off and this feisty calf figures it out and pushes, pushes right over. Whoa, it's just so tough. Good, she's feisty.
Spotting him.
Whoops. Now we're gonna get that leash off back. See what she does? She pushes right through. Don't— listen, hold on, hold on. She's right— we don't want to push her through it again. I don't know how we're going to get that leash now. Maybe when she comes back through. Almost. Do you have a crook and willy? All right, Jonah, go get me a crook. Arun said we did have one, and sure enough, that's how we're gonna catch that calf. Bring the sheep back over. Jonah, whatever you do, don't run her into the fence. I was thinking when we open this fence down here, I would have the staff and I would get her with the crook. Now I'm thinking enough time has lapsed, let's just let the calf get on the mama and then we can grab him— her to get the leash. We just need our leash back now at this point. Come on, come on. We're in. Got her, got the leash. Rare event, going to town this time for your teeth. Yeah, but you haven't done—
yeah, I went and had a— it wasn't an ache, but I had like a concern in one of my teeth, and they decided that I should probably get it fixed. So that's what we're here for today.
We're just gonna camp out with the kids while Mama's inside, read some books. When I was at Homesteaders, we had a members meetup, and 2 people at least came up to me and said thank you. And they had found somebody. It seemed like one person was like 5 minutes away and they had amazing connection, and the other person was like 20 minutes away and they had already arranged like a butchering collaboration or something like that. So people were finding each other, and that just makes my heart sing. Does it make your heart sing? Yeah, does it make it— you click in your mouth? That'd be one of the— our biggest wishes is that we could create community. So I've mentioned this before, I'm going to mention it now because you guys got an RSVP by November 1st, absolutely no charge. Well, in some cases I think people are providing meals. But anyway, we're gonna have worldwide parties. I think we're represented like 5 countries. You know what, hold on, let's look, let's look that up. We got 30 states represented and how many countries? France, Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain. This will be our first year doing it. We'll see how it goes. But my idea is, I mean, the Great American Farm Tour is showing It's a great documentary, but it's just an excuse to get together. Hopefully you go away with friends. That's what this is going to be about. So I encourage you, I'm going to leave a link for this down in the description. Once you sign up for it and get on my email list, you'll have the directory. Gosh, there's 1, 2, 3, 4, there's like 12 places in Texas. So if you're in Texas, hopefully you can find community, get together, find some new friends, rekindle some old friendships. I don't know what it is. Feel a little less crazy. I'm gonna leave a link for that down in the description. I'm pushing that the next few days because you need to sign up by November 1st because the, the viewing date is November 13th. And these hosts, they need you to RSVP. They're just people like you, and they need you to RSVP so they can adequately plan and throw a good party. Well, the main camera battery died. The dentist is running like 45 minutes, an hour late. Mom just got some. They say it could take an hour and a half to 2 hours. This one getting, getting grumpy. Maybe we'll go on a ride. Maybe we'll go to Tractor Supply. We made it to the Tractor Supply and Henry did fine, but we are a ticking time bomb, aren't we, buddy? At this gigantic water trough, killer swimming pool. Yeah, that one would work too. It's a little deeper. That one's huge. That might make more sense for an ice bath. Yeah, like one person, uh, maybe not as long. We have to go to Tractor Supply anyway to get some mineral feeders. The sheep have broken them off the mineral shawl, so might as well go now instead of after. We don't get very far in, do we? There's cool little motorcycles. Let's see where it is. Pans right here. I guess I'm not 100% sure I didn't just buy these online because I don't necessarily see them throughout this aisle.
Nope.
But this one, Lily—
no.
Finally found them up here.
There was a snake there.
Would have been us. Are you clicking your— are you clicking your mouth? I think Arun said 4, so we got 4. That's a good start. Let's get more and then we'll have them and we won't have to go to the store again. Got Henry back in. How you doing, Henry? He's getting there. Hopefully he'll go to sleep in the car. Let's go to the co-op. We made it to the co-op. Totally feel like Mr. Mom right now. Got him in his car seat. We got a load. We got a stash. Some things we can't grow on our farm. Well, we got out of there all right. You guys got your snacks? Yeah. Grapes?
Yeah.
Henry's still asleep. That's a huge win. Let's go get mom.
I'm gonna eat our pineapple at the dentist.
Yep, we got some pineapple. That's probably best eaten at the dentist. We are back. Little leftovers for lunch for me. Fish and turkey. Rebecca though— mouth is sore, so we're heating up some of this chicken soup she made the other day. Maybe she can just have the soup part. How is it, Beck? Are you able to actually eat it? A little bit. How'd the procedure go?
It went okay.
Rest on the docket the rest of the day?
Yeah, it definitely hurts.
He had to give me a lot of shots because I don't numb well. I know. And Henry's back to be with her about 4 hours. That might have been the record, Henry. And you're full, but you still want more. I was gonna close out the vlog, but we can't close it there. That's kind of a— that's not very a happy ending. Let's end it instead with the Burn It Up Cooking Show. Today, you're feeling down, you just had dental work.
Milkshake edition.
Milkshake.
I exactly— I Googled, we don't have any ice cream. So I said, oh, milkshake without ice cream, and I came up with— there's a recipe.
2 cups ice. 1 cup or 2 cups of milk? It's basically just chocolate milk.
Well, we don't have any chocolate in it. Should we put chocolate in it?
Oh, it's just a straight up milkshake. Okay, no, that's fine. Why are you putting more ice?
Well, because I, I'm guessing—
wait, you just put a dab of cream in there.
I know, I'm just making my thing up.
A little bit of vanilla, raw honey.
Raw honey.
Go for it. It's the spot after the dental procedure. Yeah, well deserved.
