It’s A New World We Live In - I Can Help

Uncle Justin Rhodes argues that food shortages and supply-chain disruptions are pushing people toward homesteading, but warns that going it alone leads to burnout. He pitches Abundance Plus, a membership offering inspiration, community, and knowledge through a content library, social app, and live Q&A.

It's Mother's Day. I know Rebecca wanted to weed tomorrow. Let's surprise her today as we do this Real Talk. It's a new world that we're living in nowadays, and I don't mean new as in like the excitement of a new truck. I mean a dismissal of the old, and not necessarily old and like it's bad, but like old and that's good. The old way is gone. In this video, I'm talking about 3 phases that have entered our vernacular for the first time. Food shortages. That's not something I said before now. It hit close to home the week Randolph, our carpenter, came to us and said, as he showed up that day, you know, they didn't have chicken at the grocery store. The second one is supply chain issues. I mean, let's be honest. Doesn't it feel kind of like people are just, I don't know, making up excuses for the inability to perform as we expected? But I don't know, there are some real things like quarantines, bottleneck issues, shipping issues. Yeah, there are some real issues that create supply chain issues. There are many more, but a third one for this video is herd immunity. And from what I understand, that's this idea where Enough people get a virus and become immune individually, when a critical mass of them become immune, there's nowhere more for that virus to live, and essentially it, I don't know, withers, lessens, dies, I don't know. Those first two phrases has caused a lot of the general public, probably you included, to take more seriously some control of your food system. My channel grew like 60% in, in 2020, and our business more than doubled. I think it's rightly so, because our, our business, our content creates encouraging things to get people inspired to go. It creates— we create educational content, we give people know-how, and we give folks a sense of community. I shouldn't say we give folks a sense of community, like, we give folks real community. I'm going to talk about those three ideas in a second, but first, this surge has created some problems. People get in it, they find it's, it's harder than they imagined, they get discouraged, they realize they lack know-how even if they've done something before. Nobody knows everything. And you get far enough down this lifestyle, it gets lonely. You want to learn how to do something in homesteading, you get some books, you stumble across me on YouTube. Hi. Welcome. But you soon find out there's more to be learned than you would imagine. Your family thinks you're nuts, and you're isolated and feeling alone. Joel Salatin says the average homestead lifespan is only 6 years. Hopefully I'm catching you before that total, utter, complete burnout. This is where I want to take a turn for the better and talk to you about what I call the 3 kings of homesteading and how I can help you with those through our platform, Abundance Plus. The first king is encouragement and/or inspiration. And I'll be honest with you, I feel sort of alone in this. I don't get giddy and all excited about spring. Oh my gosh, did I just admit that? Actually, spring ends up being a time of overwhelm for me. I don't wish it was this way. I'm working on this, but right now I feel like— and this happens in the spring a lot— there's suddenly so much to do all at the same time, and it's impossible to do it all at once. It can be overwhelming. But Friday night we had the, the online film fest with Abundance Plus. We have 1,500 people gathered together there, and we watched Wilder Still, Divergence, and Rooted, some amazingly inspirational shows. And just the energy in the room and just those shows stories, I walked away completely and just with a new energy and encouragement. And I didn't know it, but I really needed that. And I thought last night, when I do this video opening up Abundance Plus spring registration, I should dare you. I should dare you to go watch Inside Abundance Plus. Go watch Divergence 2, Wilder Still 6, and Rooted 10. We're getting some AC work done on our house. They have a guarantee of if you, if it, if you don't like it within a year, you're disappointed, we'll come and rip out the system. That's a guarantee. That's a service. So I'm going to tell you, you get inside, you don't get inspired, your money back. At this point, since Jonah has weeded the potatoes. It's feeling a little— oh, you know what, you can get between that. Yeah, let's do some fun. Let's do some fun love that Jonah didn't do. King number 2: community. Abundance Plus is more than just inspirational shows and documentaries and ad-free vlogs. We're actually launching a pretty much a social media app this week. It's dropping. It's gonna be our own community area, much like Facebook, but without all the silly rules and censorship. I'll tell you my own story. We've met a sheep mentor in there, somebody who has been doing sheep longer than we have, is very available. And actually, we had her out to teach us how to band. We actually made it an instructional video inside Abundance Plus. Now that's a video in the video library for anybody to enjoy. I reviewed it before we went and banded. Uh, now that they're banded, well, how long do we wait, I wondered. How long can— till we can put them back in the flock? When are they going to be infertile? Because we have developed a relationship with this person, uh, texted them, and turns out they're ready to go back in into the flock. Now that's something you don't find with Mr. Google Pants. That's something you find with good old-fashioned, uh, relationships built. If you don't find anybody in there and you have a specific question like that, well, you can get premium membership. I mean, Premium is only available at certain times. I'm about to get to that in a second. Well, now it's spring registration. It's available through Sunday. They call me Uncle Justin, and here's why. Because let's say you haven't met— what would it be, a cousin in there? I don't know. Let's say you haven't met somebody yet and you need to know an answer like that. Well, guess what? I want to be that food-growing uncle you never had. It's funny, the older people sometimes get, get upset and offended by that, and they say, oh, you're I'm older than you. You could never be my uncle. Actually, I've been an uncle since before I was even born. Fun fact, my dad had a previous marriage. My dad was old enough to be my grandpa. He had a previous marriage whose children are old enough to be my dad. Therefore, they had children that some of them were even older than me. So I laugh about that. Does that qualify me? I'm like pitching myself as an uncle here. But that means you can text me. You can get on a live show with me. Once a month and ask your question. Like, text me and I'll answer you within 24 hours. No kidding. That's how serious I am about being the uncle. Whoops. Looked like I jumped ahead of myself. King number 3 is knowledge. And I was going to talk all about how I have an instructional video on banding and blah, blah, blah. And so I kind of blended knowledge with community, which it all kind of blends in together. You'll kind of see that in a minute. Why aren't you guys locking on? Okay. No? All right. I gotta wedge you in here real quick. Okay, bear with me. Actually, that leads me into my next segment, which is notice how these all kind of intertwine. There's a bit of community and the inspirational piece because, you know, we have the live showings and stuff like that. And then there's, um, some community in the knowledge because you can tap into the community area or text me. Guys, I want to give you my full attention on this herd immunity. We all know what it means virally, so, but when I saw herd immunity planning this talk, I was thinking, wow, that's really neat. Think of it like, especially in what I'm talking about, let's look at the word immunity. We all want to be immune ultimately, right? We want to be self-sufficient, resilient, We're all looking after resiliency if we're really digging into why we're doing this. Well, also look at the word herd. You know, flock, togetherness, crowd, community. And so really herd immunity, I know the real sense of it as we all have come to know it, but let's twist it for just a minute. Herd immunity, together we are immune. Together we can do this. Together we are resilient because we cannot do this alone. There's this idea in homesteading, this independent mindset. That's wrong. And frankly, it's going to end in burnout if you try to do every single thing yourself. You try to learn everything yourself the hard way by books and research, and I ain't gonna pay the money, you know. And, or if you try to I don't need people, I'm going to build everything, I'm going to make my own compost, I'm going to start my own plants, I'm going to do this and that, you're going to burn out. We need each other and together we are strong. Right now, spring registration through Sunday, 10% off, bonus inspirational stickers, and access to premium, which is texting and webinars with yours truly, Uncle Justin and Aunt Rebecca. Plus the guarantee: if you're not inspired, you don't learn something, we give you your money back, no questions asked. I almost forgot, that's abundanceplus.com. I'll also put the link down in the description. Oh my goodness, that'll keep him occupied digging a 3-foot hole. Where are you digging, Australia? I gotta dig down and then over and then up. Okay, all right, that's gonna be really cool. All right, what are you calling first? Is that his name? Shot Tuesday's video and weeded your potatoes. Oh, you did? Woo! While you make the cake. What kind of cake is it? Coconut cream cake. Yay! All right, looks like it's gonna be a good Mother's Day for us. Hope all y'all had a wonderful Mother's Day. Peace out.
