What are you eating?
Apple.
You got you an apple? He's feeling good. But my life is good. Really good. I slept 14 hours last night. Guys, do not knock these cameras over. Don't play on the mics either. No. Gideon, put that mic back up. Thank you, Lily. Put those on the shelf.
Here's my idea. I want to get a Little Pony when I'm like 12. Not like when I turn 12, but like in the year I'm 12.
And then.
I can get like a little pony, and then when I, when I'm ready to get a bigger horse for my business, I can get a bigger horse.
I like that she's trying to turn her passions into a business. One way to pay for an expensive hobby. I get enough water out of here to feed a small posse of chickens every day.
I want to keep my first 2 horses in the outdoor stalls facing the old soccer field because I don't want to like build this big barn just for like one or two horses. Every Saturday, a trail ride, and you can pay to get on a horse and do it.
All right, let's go.
A few hundred.
Nice, not too hot. The pouring rain we got yesterday must have really Cooled it off a bit. Only about 130. Means we don't have to turn it today.
Uh-oh.
Usually when the hose is in there like that means his water's off and trying to Get it. Wasn't like that too long. Poured the rain last night. As a result, nobody had their lid on the alfalfa.
It's ruined. No greens for the chicken.
Is that a piece of corn growing in your sandbox? Or is that transplant? Oh yeah, you used to have corn over here. That's crazy. Come on, you can put it up here and play with it. Did you get the tree wrapped just high?
Yeah, it's looking great.
It's just that you need to go eat breakfast. You probably should if they're going to be hungry for lunch.
Sure.
Steers and little sheep are coming off this. I was watching a Greg Judy just recently, and he was talking about how he leaves, uh, some of this ungotten stuff.
Folks, that's what we left behind over there. You see there's a good residual, the ground's covered, and if we get a rain, that's going to come springing back. You take it off to a putting green and you get a rain, you don't capture any of the rain, it just runs off.
There's some taller stuff that they haven't been getting. Normally we mow behind that just to cut out all the weeds and just help speed up the edible process. The, the edibles grow faster than the weeds and they come back faster. I think in this spring especially we need to do that because the weeds are so prolific and it's so hard for the animals to keep up. But there's very few weeds left in this. That'd be the difference of, let's say, this much having to grow back, which is not that much. It's not as impactful on the grass. It's got going to recover quicker versus that much. All right, I'll tell the boys thank you. This has its benefit because everything can get the sun. Definitely don't miss any weeds like this, and these weeds get chopped down, they're slower to recover. Leaving the grass not nearly as attractive, but it also is— look, you got a little— some sort of bee flying in around there. You're not going to kill as much of the insect wildlife if you don't mow it. Technically, Honey here will milk without a stanchion. She also woofs down her alfalfa, and we might not be done milking Vanilla, so we just need to captivate her. We could leash her, but it's just easier to put her in the stanchion. There is no use trying to milk her. The calf is getting it all. We're calf separating you tonight— this afternoon, hopefully we remember to Put the calf up. I mean, we could milk her without a rope too, just like this. She's calmer than Vanilla is. How was breakfast?
Oh my gosh, yes!
Is that all you lack?
Yes, but I know what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna pick this 50-footer up and start it here because it has slack at that end and go like that.
Good deal. Are you guys all right if we don't mow behind them now and we just either scythe or string trim just a few bit of weeds they left? And that way it'll be stockpiled. And because we're getting into the fall, the grass won't have as much to grow to match all everything else. You don't think that looks good enough over there?
It won't match this though. Look how ugly this is compared to that. If it looked the same, it would be not as bad.
Okay.
Are you sure?
Yeah, just mow it on— we're always mowing it on the highest setting, aren't we? We'll definitely mow it on the highest setting. Can we do that?
Yeah, that will help out a lot.
Okay. Can you do that without spilling the milk?
Yeah.
Hey, where'd you get those?
Found them in Sally's.
I could use those. For what? Well, those are poultry shears. Heck, I could use those this afternoon to cut up the turkey. Come on, let's go, let's go. Sheep who love to browse would love to have that young locust. Couldn't get it, couldn't get it. Our 2x4 system into our woven wire over our T-posts. No auto valve on that one. Is it even running?
Yes, you knocked the water hose off.
They got no sense of delayed gratification. They just knocked their water out. Why is it so slow?
There's a leak at the house.
Well, we need to fix that pronto. There's a lot of water coming— leak?
Yeah, it's a huge leak.
Okay, let's go through.
On both of them, both water hydrants over there.
Oh wow. Okay, let's go look at it.
Get me on the machine job and then you can go.
It's leaking. I'm hoping Teflon tape will help. Does it also have a washer? It does not have a washer. That's probably why that's leaking. Josiah, let's try some of our new GoPro mounts. Josiah, what if you put the machine right here? You can grab a log and feed it to me. The log gets split right where they need the log to be. Josiah, can you get— can you squeeze? I don't think you can get through there. Let's pick that log up out of the way.
I can do it if you get this log out of the way.
All right, you lift that in.
Should I dip in the pond?
We either get a hose up here, which we do have a hose actually. Yeah, right there.
Yeah, just gotta plug it in and wash it off before I saw it.
Yeah, he lifts it up, I wash it off, he booms it over here, I saw it. It's about time we start thinking about firewood. We might as well see what it's going to take. We're going to work up this firewood here for the hot tub.
Which one did you start with?
Whichever one you can, bud. Josiah's gonna lift, Mama's He's gonna hose off, I'm gonna saw.
Well, that's funny.
Really loose chain. I was thinking I would do that by lunch, but it's now time to make lunch. It's taking a bit longer than I expected. I'm pretty sure chainsawing is one of those things that you want to do for a while because there's so much setup and tear down. So we might be on this today. Hey, let me see those shears you found. I don't know where he found them, but we're gonna try them out.
I found them. I think they're grandpa's.
It's not Thanksgiving, but Welcome to Turkey Anytime.
This is the Burn It Up Cooking Show. Gideon, come here. His turn to help cook. Come here, Gideon. Really hard to keep him focused. Gideon, come here. We're gonna spatchcock this thing. These are dull. Shall we get the keel bone off or just— we'll just do it later. But we will— let's do cut this in half. We got the turkey halved. Put in the fridge till it's time to cook this afternoon. Torch isn't— I hear the gas, but it's not igniting.
Watch for it to become yellow.
That looks yummy. I farted on your—
All right, Gideon, let's go.
Let's see if we can't get this pressure washer and see if that will speed things up a bit. I think the pressure washer will do a much more thorough job as well. But tell you guys the honest truth, we are all in a funk. You know, when you come back from a good time, you know, sleeping in, staying up late, playing during the day, it's hard to come back. You know, I'm telling myself it's a bright, beautiful day, what are you thankful for? But there's still— there's this— there is a sort of a gloom hanging over. I couldn't find the pressure washer, and this one Needs a diaper change. I was thinking we would just whip this out this morning.
That's not the case.
Now I'm hoping we can just get it done before supper. It's starting to heat up. This is good. I'm so sorry. All right, hopefully we won't disturb this too much. Good boy. Stay with me. Okay, you ready to go? Popsicle in hand. You two old gossipers ready to go? Yeah, but turn this down once pace it a little bit. I'm loving this Green Egg. Vent it at the top, vent it at the bottom to control your speed. Can one of you come with me to show me the pressure washer? Yeah, look at this.
206.
Yeah, we're gonna work off all this firewood. Technically, we have till Lily's horse lessons at 4:30. We're gonna eat at 5:30, so we technically have till 4:30. 2 and a half hours. This is very reasonable. That we should be able to get this done. If we cannot, we've got big problems. You guys want to swim?
Yeah, 4:03.
Okay, we need to quit by 4:30. Let's find this thing.
Watch out, Andy, it's a snake!
It's got a little bit of fuel left, maybe what, half? And I believe all our tanks are— all our tanks are empty. That's up. That's enough for our experiment. Jonah, you need this.
Hey, I'll catch you some minnows.
I just realized we got to crank this up every time we do a log. At some point it might just be easier to just sharpen the saw. I accidentally ran over the kayak. We've got to undent it there. I backed into it earlier. Took him a minute, but Josiah got upset about it. We need some sort of long, strong pole. Come on, kids, everybody back in! Is that a board? We might not have to go anywhere. Hey, I give up.
That should still float.
I'll set up a log place over there. Okay, that we can lay the logs on. Then I'll pick a log up and you'll spray it. I'll go and set it down onto supports.
Have we decided if it's gonna be one at a time?
I don't know. I want to do mine.
Yeah.
Pick one up, you're gonna hose it off, then I'm gonna take it and set it over there. Yeah, pick up another one, you hose it off.
But then you're tracking back and forth with this thing.
We'll do your idea.
Okay, leave it on.
Who cares if it runs?
That's not a bad idea, except maybe we're low on fuel, but it probably doesn't use much when it's idling. Okay, let's do that. That's a good sign, cranked right up.
Is that what you're talking about?
We've got a pile, we've got some split already. I think I'm gonna like Jonah's idea though, pressure treat them all, get them off the ground. We'll do that when we are at the woodlot and we have more room. Let's not use this as a woodlot again. I want this to be a nice beach area for our pond. The thought was we need some firewood here, let's just get our logs here and process it here. It's a good thought, but it just leaves— it's just a mess. Mess. We have all these machines up here, it's like disturbing the peace. It's helping.
Yeah, I burned my hand on the muffler. I literally put my hand on it like to start it.
Y'all have worked hard today. You can swim if you want to.
They hit Henry. He can say Henry. I taught him how to say Henry.
You know how to say Henry? Hey, what's your name? We've been having a hard time heating up our hot tub water, I think. Our ashes are built up too much. I can't build the fire up. Just pile it up right there. Right here?
Yep.
Now we're gonna get the leaf— turn the propane off. Now we're gonna get the leaf blower.
That's good.
We've been having a hard time getting this up to temp. I don't know if that wood was just super wet or if it's greenish, you know, hadn't dried out enough, it's been sitting as logs. Dries out better when it's like this though. I wish it was sitting like that for a year. You got a fire hot enough though, it'll burn anything. 300, that's about what I want it to be. Just measured one, is significantly done. It's at like 180. Can you cut up zucchini?
No, I don't know how.
Come on, time you learn. Now just go Like that. Yeah, cut the ends off. Okay, you don't want the ends. And then you want them about that, that, that big. Okay, can you do that? Okay, we got you cutting up something. He was begging us to cut something. Don't tell him it's a butter knife. Cutting up meat sticks. Gideon, keep it on the cutting board, bro. So I gave you a cutting board.
Whoa, I think all afternoon tomorrow, frying up some onions.
Just looking at old pictures. Uh-oh, another popsicle. How many have you eaten?
This is like his third.
It's a half.
Look at me in the eyes. One a day. Hey, I'll give you one a day, or you can buy one for $5 from your babysitting money.
I don't babysit.
Well then you don't have no money. What are you doing with that towel?
To keep it warm.
You can't go through it.
He's guarding his corn. Just keep the zucchini stored. We add zucchini to it.
Turkey, yummy. Can I have a drumstick?
Oh yeah, oh yeah. You gonna eat a whole drumstick? Yeah, it's good.
Oh, it's delicious.
That's really the only way to have turkey these days. Bacon on top, smoked. This is all 100% from our farm. Everything but the salt. We won, we won! Sometimes we take it for granted this time of year because basically every meal is from the farm. Yeah, I know. We need to take a moment and appreciate that. That's the dream realized.
Are you from the land next year? Oh yeah, I'm gonna try to make popcorn so I can have popcorn in the winter.
All right, you go for it. Whoa, that's piping hot water! We did lose our tent. As Randolph would say, those 10x10s are good until it rains and then they collapse.
