We gave Josiah his birthday presents early so that he could use them in the airsoft battle shoot we did for their channel. Whose birthday is it, Henry?
Josiah.
Josiah? Okay. Let's open. What is it? It is socks and underwear. Woo! Who's this from?
Lily. I will bake you— Ooh! Ooh!
Hang on to that. Camo underwear. Matching socks and underwear camo. Oh, that's a fancy scope.
Nice. The vest.
Oh, now how you gonna know when you've been shot?
You can hear it.
You still feel it? They say that you cheat because they don't feel it in that vest.
I got him once and now he gets picked on.
Oh wow, it's got all this Optional pockets. Oh, they're so anti-climactic. Queen of the Throne.
What's that?
That sounds good.
It's castor oil pops.
She's like, I'm short.
What's that for?
Goggles. Oh, and BBs.
Yes. Wow, those are nice. Oh, it's got a clear one.
I had a clear one and a yellow.
Sweet. One more.
Oh, camo. Wow, Mom, what'd you get in the camo? Outfit.
Yeah, okay, let's see you decked out in all this this afternoon. Look at this, we're gonna film some carnage. You guys ready to get shot up? Rich, you ready to slaughter? Expert versus amateur, 1v5, here we come. Layton's nervous.
This doesn't look like an amateur gun.
You're nervous? Okay, I'm pulling for you guys. Look, he's shaking. Layton's shaking.
He's cold. He's so nervous.
Just say you shaking. Why are you shaking? Y'all are pretty confident. Yeah, you know, you there's $100 on the line, right? If Rich wins, he gets the whole $100. If y'all win, you get $20 each. Rich, if you win, $100 on the line. $100, bud. Boys, one for each of you. Look at Sam, he's got his tongue out. Not yet, Sam. Well, I should pull for you guys because I know you're— you're keep 40 of it in the family. About to film an airsoft video, 1 versus 5, for the Rhodes Bros channel. Let's see how many more cams can you get. One camera, 1, 2, 3, game on! How's your, uh, birthday suit working out for you? Good. What you got in all these pockets?
Magazines. Oh, and that's it.
That's it.
I had an extra battery, but then later—
How are you gonna know if somebody hits you? You can feel it. Okay. Happy birthday! How old are you?
14.
14? Oh my goodness. Happy birthday, dear Josiah, 14-year-old. Happy birthday to you and many more.
That's nice. There he goes.
We're gonna do a follow-along of Josiah for his birthday here. I'm just gonna follow you, all right? Pretend I'm not here. How many boys does it take to get 4 claws?
Um, 5? Uh, wait, 4.
Where y'all been sitting around? Did you switch out your ice packs?
Uh, they didn't need it because it was hot.
There was no moisture.
They're still solid.
Lily needs some of this milk this morning for hot chocolate. Could have maybe been 3 days. Look how much grass is left.
We're gonna move them here and then bring them back after we milk.
Okay. He's trying to get her to wear her heads uphill. See, exposes her teats. Teach John how to do that. RC Gold and apple cider vinegar. You the alfalfa boy?
Yep.
What you putting on there, bud?
RC Gold.
Josiah, when you blow out all your candles tonight on the cake, what are you gonna wish for?
A million dollars.
No, what would you do with a million dollars?
Buy an airsoft gun.
Well, you might only have to wish for a couple hundred dollars. That's all you want?
Well, then I can have extra.
I see. Impressed by Josiah's friends Sam and John. They don't have to be here. This morning or any morning, but every day they come at like 6:30. Those are some good friends. Hey John, why you come out here every morning?
Um, because it's, uh, one reason because it's fun and you get to do stuff with my friends.
Sam, why you wake up an hour and a half earlier to come out here?
Because it's fun and we get to learn stuff.
You figured out what you're going to do with that $20 yet?
Not yet.
They won $20 yesterday in the airsoft.
I don't know, you can't get really anything airsoft with it, so maybe a Rubik's Cube or something.
Ah, there you go, you can get a Rubik's Cube. That's high. What are you gonna do with that $20 you won yesterday at airsoft?
Buy something for my airsoft gun, like, uh, I don't know, maybe a light or an airsoft helmet.
What are you gonna do with your money, John?
Probably get more airsoft bullets with it.
Yeah, there you go.
Pros now because we got paid.
Yeah, you pro airsofters! How's that feel? Good. Getting paid to play. Who knows what's gonna happen next? Evike might be calling y'all. They need the Rhodes Bros. They need to send the Rhodes Bros all this new gear.
Look at Honey's face.
Oh, look how mad she looks.
Don't turn your back away, buddy. John took her up off and he's turned his back to her. He's bold. Nature hour. Yeah, look at all this grass in here, Jesse. We've got to have them eat it all because we are going to run out of grass because of the drought. We need to eat all this before we move on because there's no coming back before winter. What's the problem with the drought, Josiah?
Everything's drier. Grass doesn't grow as good.
Yeah, we need 7 inches in 1 month to catch us up, to get us back to normal. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey! That guy's pressing it. Which calf goes through? This is how they knock the fence down. It gets off and they know it. Get her back to her mom. Whoop! Now that we got morning milk, calf can have milk all afternoon. Billy's waiting on y'all for some of that chopped milk for hot chocolate. Right here, why she makes hot chocolate. Was it worth it? Yes. Getting up early, working hard, getting some hot chocolate. How much milk did you use?
Uh, 10 cups.
Do you use all of it?
It's still a little bit left.
3/4 of a gallon? Y'all drinking my butter right now. Josiah, what's your favorite farm product?
Milk.
Do you agree with that, John? Yes.
I like the pork rinds and beef.
Ooh, pork rinds. Ooh. And a gift to the birthday mom.
Oh wow, I was not expecting anything but eggs.
Cabbage, potato, and eggs. How about that? Well, it's a big day for you too. Fabulous.
He was already born.
It was a rough night. I guess Henry wanted to replicate that last night. Keep us up for a while.
Tried to do an immersion.
I know. But he was born and I was in a— I was a wreck. You were a little baby. I was holding you. And now you're standing next to me very tall.
He killed lunch. And this guy, what a big brother, volunteered to clean up the whole house. But the only rule is all the kids had to go outside, huh? You just like to listen to your audiobook and get it done and get it done right?
Yeah.
What a guy, what a guy, what a good big brother. Going to the belly of the beast, huh? Whole Foods for one item, Parmesan cheese. On birthdays we all get to pick a very special meal. It can have something to do with the farm. It can absolutely have nothing to do with the farm. People pick pizza, biscuits and gravy, chicken parmesan is a favorite, which is what Josiah is getting. So we gotta get some parmesan cheese. We don't grow our parmesan cheese. What you shopping for?
A gun.
On today's episode of Burn It Up Cooking Show, beautiful one joins me. Chicken parmesan. She's parting the breasts in half. Now we did grow this. When you cut it in half like that, you get more fried surface, don't you?
Yeah, and they're thinner. I mean, so technically with Parmesan, chicken Parmesan, you want to, um, like pound the breasts out thin, but I just rather do this.
Making sweet tea, a family favorite around special occasions. A special occasion. We are— I'm throwing out all sugar counts for tonight's supper.
It's gonna be a mess.
In lieu of this celebration. Be curious to see what my glucose goes to then. I drink a little bit of tea and honey and it spikes. A cup of honey to a gallon of— it'll be a gallon of sweet tea. You want to go with? Come on. Taking a break from making supper. Afternoon chores. Hey, why is your hair wet?
I got it wet. I was hot. Me and Jonah were just playing soccer.
What you doing? You don't have to drive up in there though, just to open this up. Oh, look at me acting like I know what I'm doing. The other one comes out here every day. What do you want me to do?
Yeah, you can make sure that cap is—
All right, good job. That's it. Check their water. I'll do it if we want to get the fence. Oh, it's full! Your happy birthday, it's full! Is that it? Yeah, it's too easy. Our siding's here for the homestead house remodel. That means we're one step closer to getting back in our house. Next birthday, 15, we'll be back in the house. Gonna go finish your meal, right, bro? This is the trouble with growing your own food sometimes. Can you see in that? Oh, smells horrible.
Oh, maybe my smelling— maybe my stomach smells awful.
And look at the mold right there.
Oh yeah, yeah, we had it in the fridge and it would have been fine if they would have stayed in the fridge, but we didn't have room in the in the fridge, so we had to put it in the fruit cellar.
Just means that it's not pure fat. Some gristle or something got in there.
Water.
And we're off. We're doing pretty good about it. Yeah, I'm with the best cook in the world. I'm not too worried about it when she's in charge. Wedging out this tallow. What's the trick here, Beauty?
Put it in the egg mixture, and then I just kind of press this into it.
This is a gluten-free bread.
This is a grain-free. It's like tapioca arrowroot with almond flour, Parmesan, and some spices to make it Italian.
Nice. Hey, you trying to measure him?
His hair is not there.
Okay, his hair. He's 63 and a quarter. All right, so that is— let me move, please. That's 5 foot 3, bro. You get to lick it. Yes, birthday boy gets the bowl. Chicken noodles. Yes. And the parmesan— is that parmesan? Oregano?
It's a Parmesan.
Parmesan.
Yeah, it's Alfredo.
Alfredo. There we go. First batch. Look at the difference in two different styles of mozzarella. I think I like that one. Henry likes it. Everybody's well. Everybody kicked that cold and everybody's here and eating. Congratulations and happy birthday, boy. Lord, no, no, no, no. Like she had had him, uh, yeah, yeah. Just what, 8 hours ago?
Yeah, we went to bed. I remember we went to bed. Yeah, I bet.
I bet.
You always—
and that always goes good that first night. It's the second night. Carrabba's, eat your heart out. Mimi, you can—
I cut it open. Can I cut it up?
I can see why you would ask that. Everybody's run out of steam. That's too big for our stomachs.
Uh, I wasn't— I only had a little bit.
So rich. We're not used to such Yeah, it's so good.
I don't think I had fettuccine Alfredo so delicious in so long.
It was a risk because we've never used it. Oh, Lily's having to put some back. Y'all got a couple more mails.
Happy birthday!
Henry, go get some candles. What's wrong? You think they're his candles?
He wants them to be his.
Wait, did you put 14 on here?
Uh, this one's 13.
Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! To you. Happy birthday, dear Josiah. Happy birthday to you.
Okay. What'd you wish for, Josiah?
A million dollars.
Nice and firm. It got cold.
Yes.
Are these our walnuts?
Yeah, they are walnuts, my man.
Thank you. Yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy.
Walnuts aren't too strong. Pop it. Different. Uh-oh.
Pop it.
Alright, thank you. Henry's not complaining. He's going for the icing first as always. Uh-oh. I don't know. What's wrong?
Taste it.
Really? Oh no, that's not the walnut. That's baking soda.
Oh no. I added baking soda. Instead of baking— I mean, I added baking powder instead of baking soda, but you said that was alright.
I didn't say that was alright. You didn't?
Oh, you subbed baking—
You said that was alright before.
No, no, no, it's not alright ever.
Oh, so sorry. But the icing is killer. The cake's not so terrible. Good job, Lily. You did good. Well, I gotta go on a walk. Look at this. And that— we're on to something, guys. That's shot up. 162, way out of the range my doctor wants to be in. And that would have happened every time I would have had sweet tea, every time I would have had biscuits with biscuits and gravy. This has got to be a special occasion. Time for birthday blessings. What could we give him to occupy him?
Chocolate?
No.
Well, I'll put his butt in there.
He said it, okay.
And he likes to play soccer.
And the first thing you said was he's—
Fun to play with.
Okay. Alright, Big Bird.
Josiah's a good big brother. He likes to play with me.
Josiah is the best little brother.
He likes to play soccer and airsoft with me and I really appreciate that.
Best friends.
BFFFF.
What's that stand for?
Forever friendship and falling off cliffs.
Jesiah, you were my first home birth.
Mm.
And I'll never forget the role you played in being the first kid to be born at home. I was just thinking today about how little you were, and you were just 8 pounds when you were born, and we would just hold you and kiss you, and now you're this big man boy that driving a motorbike and running around playing soccer and airsoft. And you are such a good big brother to Henry and your other siblings. So I love you, and I hope you've had a good birthday today. It's kind of been a weird birthday because you got your presents yesterday.
Josiah, this is the year you became a man. Mark my words. Your body's changing, your voice is changing, you're becoming A man. We went on our man trip this, this year, and you know what I realized? My takeaway as I sit here right now and think, it was the year I realized you two were grown up enough that I can have fun with you now at the man level. Oh, mountain biking adventures, hiking adventures, whatever it may be. You're at my level now, and that's a fun stage we're going into. Okay, that's from Joseph Gideon. Read it out loud.
Happy birthday. When I get $100, I will buy you an, uh, electric airsoft gun. Love, Gideon.
Oh, I meant electric pistol.
Winnie gets $100 too, so don't count. Don't hold your breath.
