Kitchen DEMO Day 1. Way more than We Thought

The video documents the first day of a kitchen renovation on a homestead. The host (Speaker A) coordinates demolition of the countertop and cabinets, discusses material choices (switching from OSB to formaldehyde‑free plywood, selecting plywood thickness), and plans a walk‑in cooler using a CoolBot. Throughout the day, family members and a local carpenter (Randolph) help with tasks such as removing cabinets, stripping sheetrock, framing walls, installing insulation, and dealing with unexpected water damage. The group also handles farm chores—feeding chickens, pigs, and milking a cow—while kids experiment with tools and learn through trial and error. Logistics like sourcing lumber at Home Depot versus Lowe’s, using roofing nails, a battery sander, and a shop‑vac are covered. The team debates paint decisions, comparing primer versus non‑toxic zero‑VOC paint, and evaluates color choices. The narrative blends practical how‑to details with family dynamics, humor, and the challenges of a DIY renovation on a working farm.
Chapters
Kitchen demo day number 1. Pretty sure this countertop's coming out today. You think that's gonna happen today, Rebecca? Is that the order? Randolph, local carpenter, is coming also today. A walk-in cooler is beginning to be built. Taking a few breaths. Got the supplies. Last night. Although beautiful one so kindly informed me I shouldn't have gotten OSB. It called for OSB. It's off-gassing. We're gonna go exchange that for, for some formaldehyde-free, uh, plywood. I want to help with all this as much as I can, but I still got to do chores, edit, and things like that. So hopefully I can do a bit of juggling today. Good morning. All right, so you guys know the Cornish Cross are struggling to put on weight. A lot of folks are saying it's the heat. You know what, that could be some of it. We've certainly considered that. The first batch grew so fast we had to restrict feed so much, but when we put our old feed next to the new, they were eating the old like twice as fast. So we're going to continue to work to make that batch perfection. They'll feed until that happens. Not, not a crazy big deal. We didn't have much food scraps for the pig pork pig today, so that's when we compensate with chicken guts from the butchering. Also feed a bit extra skim milk. I couldn't resist those tall weeds and accidentally pulled up one of these. Looking good. Is it awesome? Hey, good morning, Papa.
Can I just have it like that?
It's best practice to put that over it, okay? Keeps them from getting in it. Good job, Lily. Look who's here! Ah, who's this lovely lady in here?
Hey, Anne!
Yeah, that's what you call me. It's Sissy. Bessie.
Okay, good.
JD's mom.
JD's mom. That's why he turned out so good. Yeah, and good choice in t-shirt there.
Ah, thank you.
I like that.
I followed you. As a matter of fact, YouTube sent me a, um, said I'm like one of your number one viewers. Oh yeah, I got a diamond.
Really?
Yeah. Oh, sorry, sorry. Yeah, sorry, sorry.
Okay. Yeah, diamond viewer. Yeah, I didn't even know that existed.
I know, I mean, whoa, is this a scale?
All right, all right, thanks. She's running some design ideas by them.
You're gonna have them open? Yeah, that's what that is.
Yeah.
What are you gonna put on?
Just my dishes, like the easy stuff. Yeah, dishes and the cups. Okay, that's good.
Okay, right, right above this one.
Yeah, so I was going to— we were gonna have this here, and— but it's— but now that it's gone, I really—
is it okay just to make the whole wall? Because you're gonna need the whole wall. You don't have to. Okay, this leaves.
Yeah, this is leaving, right?
So we're— yeah, you're not using the microwave.
No, we don't.
Okay, so then— but think about it, you're going to have 3, 2, 2, 3 if you want. Well, you want 2 over your oven.
Well, I was wondering if maybe I should put this over here. Now that can go on the end like this. So it's— where's my measuring tape?
Yeah.
Oh, okay, okay.
Yeah, so could that fit I'm pretty sure it fits. I'm pretty sure it's 46.
Are you gonna keep this one?
So you're thinking you're gonna put it— No, I'm getting rid of it. It's 46.
Is this one coming out? Yeah.
Okay, it's— so it, it could fit. We would just have to modify this. Yes, which is—
that would be easy.
Yeah, which is not a big deal.
Good idea.
But so, but what should I do? Because I was—
Papa! All right, he's calling. Sure, let's see how he reacts. Yes.
Hey, Mr. Brown, he's in the bottom.
Do you know me?
Who else is up here? Oh, look who's here! Do you remember me? Yes, Gideon, you won't remember me.
Do you know who this is?
No.
You remember JB?
Yeah, no mood in the morning. All right, there's somebody else here I really need to see. See if they need anything. Oh, look who else is here! Jason! Yes, did I get you all the right stuff? That's the question.
Yeah, I'm looking at that right now. It looks to be.
So this is what we're gonna have to do, and we can have a— this would be a great job for one of the kids. So you take that off, you take the plastic off of that nail and put it on this long— this is a roofing nail. It's not as corrugated. That's why I was wondering if it would work.
It should be fine.
Okay.
Yeah, and just stick this in there.
Yep, it works. I've already tested it. Oh, okay. Now the reason we had to have such long ones is because you're going through 2.5 inches of insulation, right? Yes. And it has to have a plastic washer so it doesn't drive through the easily drove through, right, foam, so I could grab it. Yeah. Okay, you think that's enough? Yeah, because I am going to go to Home Depot hopefully today and switch these out. Okay, I made a mistake realizing I forgot we don't do OSB. It's off-gassing formaldehyde.
Gotcha.
So we're gonna go get some formaldehyde-free. This is 7/16. Do you think 1/8 or 1/4 inch?
No, I think quarter would be too flimsy.
Oh, it's thinner than this, isn't it?
Yeah.
Okay, well, what about step up? Can it be bigger?
Yeah, it could be. I would— I would do either a half inch or 3/4.
They have those?
Yeah, and with plywood. Okay, right.
Yeah, because this is just the shell, isn't it? Yeah, so it can be as thick as it needs to be.
Yeah.
Okay. All right, good.
Um, I mean, if you do it 3/4, it'd be easier, like if you wanted to hang something on it on the outside. Yeah, a shelf right here.
I'll do 3/4 then. Let's do 3/4.
And you got these at Home Depot?
I got all this at Lowe's, but Lowe's doesn't sell the amount of half-inch plywood, so I have to go to Home Depot.
Oh, okay. Home Depot has the pine 3/4-inch plywood that's like $32. Um, you might want to look at that.
Okay.
Um, or they have the cabinet grade, which is more Like $52.
Yeah, it might look better. This eventually is going to be our— this room right here is eventually going to be our freezer fridge room. Yeah, so I don't know how good it has to look, but it's not going to be necessarily in the living. This is going to be like a big closet, big walk-in, all the cooler freezer, huh? All the food. So what happens when you grow 75% of your own food?
It makes sense to have a cooler, a walk-in cooler. Yeah, I mean, the amount of money you're spending on fridges and freezers. Yes, a walk-in cooler makes sense. Yes, in the long run.
Is this the layout?
Yeah, I didn't know, only because we could make it another foot, but then that would be in the way. I don't know if you want to do that, or we can remove that. We could maybe move it over.
What's the max do you think that little air conditioning CoolBot can do?
Well, I think it said it should do like 8 foot by 8 foot.
Okay, what's this?
This is 7 feet by 7 feet.
And you're trying to buy 8 foot by 8 foot? Yeah. Okay.
Only because of that fan's kind of in the way.
Okay. Well, we're not really going to need that fan. We just need the light though.
Yeah, just the light.
Okay.
Okay, so I can, um, I mean, just for— just to start building, instead of trying to move that, I could just like maybe take off a wing.
Take a wing. Take a wing off. All we need is the light. Yeah. Kitty, you want to go with me to Forest Pigs or stay here? What? Okay. Well, you're the right man for that job. Good job putting the chickens in there. Sorry, that's smart. Do you think they'll stay in there? I really need to go to the forested pigs, but I need to see this. I'm gonna see if they stay. Did you just roll your eyes? Okay, I am just coming to see. I'm not saying they're not gonna. I just want to see them stay in that open bucket. How many you gonna carry in that bucket? All of them. Okay, definitely want to see this. Okay, looks like it's gonna work. Good job, buddy. And that, my friends, is why you gotta let kids try things, let kids fail. I didn't think that was gonna work. But who am I to tell him that? It's either gonna fail and he's gonna learn something from it, or it's gonna succeed. Either way, I'm the cheerleader and I win. Oh, is he? The carpenter's here. Let's call him Randolph because that's his name. And, uh, let's hurry up. Let's get these pigs fed. Let's come back, check on him, and then milk. Nice shades, Mr. Brown. Well, what happened here? A little excited at your frat party? Wow, you guys have already cleared there. Doing a good job. Look, you guys were just here yesterday and grass is already growing. Randolph is here. He's gonna be putting up stripping to put— are you making a bubble, Rebecca? Yes, a plastic bubble.
We're gonna have a bubble.
Anna's here to help.
I'm here.
Yes, you are, and it's time to milk. You want to go? It's your first time milking a cow, Ann?
Yep, that's why I've always wanted to do it. I think I can only do one hand. I think I'm not— okay, now I've got it going. So is this how you do it?
Yeah, you're Very good.
I can't get the— I can't get my little stream. Justin, I'm sorry to laugh, but this is hilarious because you're like, and Aunt Bethy and I are like, see, I don't know how Justin gets it. Okay, there we go. There you go. There we go. I had to figure it out from watching you again. I can't do it.
She's very patient with y'all, isn't she?
Yeah, here's a bowl. Oh, thank you.
You eating with us tonight?
Yeah, I'm living with you.
Cultured cream, milk?
I'm having it all.
Okay, good.
Yep, I'm gonna—
this is my—
these Florida girls are getting broke in.
New experience.
Yeah, who knew that I could do this?
Look at this.
Look at you guys.
Our hands are gonna kill us when we're done. Um, I accidentally squeezed, um, Josiah— I mean, his boot down in his boot. And, uh, we couldn't get the back one, so he's emptying.
So he took over. Let's finish her off. I bet y'all did most of it. Oh yeah.
Oh yeah, he got that side. He did that.
Oh wow.
We finished, uh, well, he was over there while we were still struggling.
He's finished over here. Put a tarp down. Hauling this rubbish off to the dump. Truck's lined up and ready. The countertop cabinets are out. Oh wow. No turning back now, Randolph.
The rain, is it?
Nope.
Might be here for— till Christmas, might.
We need to get the seats set up and we need to get the 2-burner stove set up out here. And then the screen room would also be nice.
Okay.
Um, and we can put this, this table and chairs in it.
I'm on it. Okay, you heard it, folks. We've got to get this area cleared for a kitchen extension. Let's do it. All right, a 9 by 11. We'll have to measure that and see, but first breakfast. Oh yum! No dishes tonight, Becky.
It looks amazing. Is it coming off easy, Randolph?
No, not real good.
It's having fun.
Yeah, it's glued on there pretty good.
Rebecca, there's no turning back now, honey.
I gotta get downstairs and start sanding that stuff. Oh my, because I could prime it and paint it while it's off the wall.
I'm gonna go move the cows.
Okay, thank you. You need a shade cloth out here maybe, or you're not gonna be spending a lot of time?
Okay, uh, yeah, she's gonna be doing dishes. Might have to grab my sunglasses. Are you gonna hook a hose up?
I am. I'm gonna hook something. I'll hook the hose and a drain. Gonna have very little dishes because we're using paper plates during this time. That's jerry-rigged, but that might work. Cabbage!
Yes!
All right, is it gonna work? We got water. Let's see what happens when it fills that up. Oh, it's coming out. Pulled the wood off. How about running it through a cinder block? All right, now we're gonna have to get these cabinets downstairs so the beautiful one can start sanding them. Shall we check on Randolph? He's got the backsplash off. He's gonna need new sheetrock. Did you know it was gonna rip the sheetrock off like that?
Well, sometimes it does and sometimes it don't.
Grab any of those cabinets, Mr. Brown, and take them down. Here, Gideon, can you carry this?
There.
Ty's got that. Hot action down here, Becky.
Hot action.
You about to sand all this?
Yeah, what's this?
I know, right? I hope he remembered how to put it all together.
This needs to come off.
Or did you draw a map?
I might need you a little bit. Sorry. Just take this off and then I just need this screw.
Rebecca and Jonah doing a good job sanding. I set up the Shop-Vac for them. How about a look at the kitchen? Totally ripped off the sheetrock right there. Already got a little bit more complicated than we wanted. Uh, looks like we have some water damage here. That sheetrock will have to replaced. Hopefully this cabinet doesn't have to be pulled out. Maybe it does. I'm a little bit in shock. This is happening. This is happening for real. Jason on the wall. How's it going so far, buddy? It's going good. Better or worse than you thought? Noon.
Um, I think it's right there, maybe a little behind, but okay. Hopefully I get this done before lunch, or this wall at least. Okay, and then do you start the other one?
Okay, good. You're— that's your goal today is just to get the walls up? Yes, that's gonna happen.
Just framing the walls.
All right, I think it's 12:30. I think I can sit down and try to edit a little bit. So wow, you guys got the countertop off. Arun here to help. Thank you, Arun. Uh, yeah, we're gonna keep that sink. Okay, so maybe we can put it over in the old barn. Yeah. Okay, that's a good idea. We're going to make a veggie washing station with it.
Oh, you can— yeah, you can use the—
oh, we could use it Wednesday because we're using our other sink out there right now, so we'll use it Wednesday.
Yeah, we can put in the somewhere like in the stand.
Yes. Yeah.
Yep.
So what next? Any more things that go to the dump, Randolph?
Well, this is a little bit of sheetrock and about all that's left.
Okay, well, can you use him, or do you need help here, or—
No, I reckon that was just a moonshine.
Yeah, this is moonshine. Yeah, that's what the mountain people drink.
It looks like he's drinking moonshine.
Yeah.
That's my energy pill.
Yeah, I think we gotta do anything about that. I guess you're replacing that, that water damage.
Yeah, a little damp, ain't it?
Yeah, yeah, that was from water running off the counter.
Yeah, yeah, we'll have to cut that Okay.
Afraid of that. Is that going to be a lot of trouble to take this out?
It'll be a little bit.
Okay. All right, setback number 5.
5?
We already hit 5?
Oh, we've already hit 5 a long time ago. Are you having as much fun as Randolph? Yeah, it's always water damage and mold. Oh man, you're not having that much fun, are you? No, not that much. Okay, good. Okay, good, you got the wall up. Yeah. Okay, you starting on the next one? Or fine-tuning this one?
Yeah, just fine-tuning this one, adding another one right here. Okay, but that's about it.
Okay, good deal. You holler if you need anything.
Okay.
Nice tool. Is that yours?
Yeah.
You bought a DeWalt sander?
Yeah.
Wow, that's handy. You guys are knocking this out.
It really is. Boom!
Get some work done on the edit. Lunch is ready. Actually, they're talking. Let's see what's going on.
But I might have bought more because it's like— it was— I'll just look at what I have because I think it was like 6 square feet a box.
Yeah.
And I bought 7 boxes, which is 42 square feet, which I measured this.
Yeah.
And I measured this. But I didn't measure behind the fridge, but that extra 2 square feet might do us. And I can go pick up another box too.
So you can get— yeah, all right. Okay. And then, box of what?
Um, tile.
Okay.
We're just talking about everything.
Yeah, good.
So funny because the lady at Lowe's, I was telling her that we were doing this and she goes, you know, you're gonna do way more than you thought you were. And I'm like, yeah, and here we are doing way more than we thought we were going to. This looks so different. It's gonna be really nice. Again, I am a little bit nervous though about the paint color because I feel like with the— with it behind the primer, it makes it like an aqua. Not really looking for that color. So I'm not, not prim.
How's it going in there, Jason?
It's going good. We're going to start on that second wall.
Okay, good. It's good. So you're going to hit your goal today? Yeah, I think so. Okay, good. What do we got here, Anna? Chicken soup.
Chicken soup and salad from the land. Cherries.
It's pretty much all from the land except for maybe the cherries.
Okay, so this is with it. So I sanded this and then I just painted this on, and then these I'm not doing. This is milk paint. But see, then I bought primer and I primed it, but I don't know if I love that color. Like, this color and this color, they're different. They are much different.
It's the same paint, same paint, different color under primer. That's darker. Yeah, see the wood shining through on that?
So this is just the grain of the wood shining through.
Do you like that?
I don't mind it. I think that I like it better than I like that.
Oh, you do?
Okay.
I think what she's wanting you to say is that'll work. You don't have to prime it.
What do you like better? Okay, so are you asking which one I like better?
Or are you asking, what are you asking? Is it okay to paint without prime?
Yes.
Primer? Or is there a side effect that we're not thinking about? She likes the look, but is this just gonna like peel off?
Oh, I see what you mean.
Well, I actually, I'm more concerned about the primer one peeling off because as you can see, because what is primer?
4.
I would think it'd be fine like this. I don't think—
I think primer looks a little bit dirty though. But doesn't it look dirty, Anna? It looks dirty. Yeah, it's kind of mottled. It's like— yeah, but see, I don't like that color.
I thought primer is supposed to be like, you don't have to put as many coats on and it covers a lot of what's behind there. Yeah, how this is covering it.
But it's also— yeah, now I'm like, I don't know what I'm doing because I don't want to have to repaint because I don't like the color. Do you know what I mean? Like, I don't want to get into it and then be like, hold it up against the wood.
Like, like if you were in the kitchen, like hold it up over there. Suddenly it's too dark.
Yeah, it's like a— I can't explain it.
It's like aqua.
Yes.
Yeah, but you have to paint the cabinets. To give them back to Randolph to hang.
Yeah, I know.
After lunch checkup, we're talking doors. How about— why are we gonna make the door?
I marked this at 32. Okay, that's what that is.
Okay, 32 is plenty.
Let's just do 32.
Jonah, you work even in your play, don't you? Building Legos. Oh, it's looking different. He's gonna clean it up. Randolph. Super fast. And there's no water damage or mold back there, is there? Nope. That's good. Good.
Got the van out.
That's the best news I've heard all day. Jason, you're done?
Yeah, done for today.
Done for today. Bruce was in here. Hey, did it pass the inspection, Bruce? Okay, any hang-ups, hiccups?
Uh, not really, just coming struggles? Just trying to make it as square as possible. Yeah, try to make it straight as possible. I still need to put a header up here, but that's no big deal. I need to add a piece here. Um, yeah, but that's it.
Is it going to be arching here too? Are you going to flatten this out?
It's going to be like that.
Okay.
I'm just— we're just using the existing ceiling.
Yeah.
And then we're going to put more insulation on it.
Okay, cool. That's going to be a huge area.
Yeah, it's gonna be nice.
Can't stop, won't stop. 7:30, still going.
We got 20 minutes.
Yeah, we're forcing ourselves to stop tonight because we've been staying up too late. We have to do snack at 7:50, get into bed.
It's really nice, actually. It's, you know, it'll be good when I start painting in here because I can do that in the morning when Gideon is still sleeping. Sleeping, and I wake up early.
When are you gonna paint in here? Tomorrow morning?
No, no, tomorrow I'm gonna go and buy paint.
The paint you don't like? That blue paint you decided not to go with it?
So I don't like the blue paint that I had.
That's right.
It turned out weird. It turned out like too teenager-y, I think.
Teenager-y. Teenager-y. That's a good idea.
I don't know, it just got weird. It just got too dark but bright. Okay, so I'm going to another paint store because you gotta have milk paint. No, it's not gonna be— it's not milk paint, it's gonna have non-toxic, but it's zero VOC, really good paint. So, okay, I'm gonna have to drive like an hour, but I'm gonna go and I'm gonna buy all the paint. You want to go with me? He's like, very boring.
I don't care.
Give me 2 hours in the car.
I don't care.
I like your hack here. Battery sander.
The guy told me to do it.
The, uh, taping the shop vac on there.
This is what the guy told me to do at Lowe's.
Is it working?
Ben confirmed it.
Yeah.
Well, look at that. You've sanded this whole thing.
There's barely any dirt out here. Sand There's barely any sand dust.
Okay. Ta-da! She's done right on time. I got your smoothie ready. Strawberry pineapple. You look tired. We're all tired. We're all going to bed after this. Uh-huh.
