In this informal Rhodes family vlog, host Justin Rhodes (Speaker A) combines a playful air‑soft gun hand‑off challenge with a rapid‑fire lesson on how to stay busy during winter to avoid "spring fever" and burnout. He and several helpers (Austin, Josiah, Brenna, etc.) race to list ten practical homestead projects—building garden beds, repairing high tunnels, collecting leaves and compost, deep‑bedding animals, tree inventory, fence/animal system work, creek clean‑up, firewood, water lines, access roads, and boundary surveys—while a $350 air‑soft gun sits on a table for the contest. The vlog captures behind‑the‑scenes production details (multiple cameras, lighting, microphones) and teases an upcoming free workshop, "Design Your Best Homestead Ever" on February 4, where Justin will expand on these winter tasks and burnout prevention. The tone is casual, humorous, and instructional, with moments of excitement during the contest and reflective commentary on why staying busy year‑round prevents spring‑time anxiety. The video ends with a light‑hearted wrap‑up, food references, and a call‑to‑action to watch the full contest on the Rhodes Bros YouTube channel.

That was a record. 72 pounds, one-arm get-ups. Just did one set. I think I've arrived. That's, that's the goal for this Simple and Sinister training. You feeling ready to hang on to a gun for hours? Yeah. How long do you think you're gonna last? I hope until the end. Hopefully isn't more than 6 hours. 5 hours. Dinner's at 5 hours. It could be like 11 hours, I think. 11 hours? You guys can go 11 hours without going to the bathroom more than once? Well, no, then we'll go to the bathroom at 11 hours. How about you, buddy? How long are you gonna last? I don't know, an hour? These boys had the idea to do a video. Last to take the hand off the airsoft gun wins it. This is for y'all's channel. Is this the gun? Yep. $350 brand new gun. One of you better win it. So get your out of the way. I want to get your eating out of the way. Are you going to wait till the last minute or what? What's the eating approach? I have no idea. Brenna just told me he hadn't drank any water. You're not going to drink any water? Are you sure? I think maybe a little bit. Maybe a little bit. You could get dehydrated and it could backfire. Josiah's not drinking either. My little helper. Oh, you brought your own lights? I did. Henry, we're gonna go do the chickens. Jonah, you ready? You moved your bows and everything. I'm trying to get this done before they start in an hour and a half. Back and forth on what am I going to teach today. Am I going to teach the about burnout, how to prevent spring fever. I mean— oh, oh, Jonah, help me! You left the door open! Come on, come on, come on, come on! I want to teach a little bit about when you can do certain things and talk about the different things you can do in the winter. Actually, I think these could be sort of one in the same because basically to prevent the burnout, you just keep busy in the winter. And I'll show you how you can keep busy with what you can do. In the winter. Okay, I think I got it. How about we'll teach it all ways to prevent spring fever, and I'll give you 10 things that you can do in the winter. And it's this idea of when to do what. It's part of what I'll be teaching at the Design Your Best Hamstead Ever February 4th. Should I put the eggs down? And I have no idea necessarily what those— well, I think I see 3 things right behind me. I have to go around. In 2 minutes and find 10 things that you could do this winter to prevent spring fever. Austin, start my time. Ding ding ding! One thing you can do in the winter: build your beds. Go ahead and build your beds, cover them for spring garden bed. Second thing you could do— I'm looking at this, there's some holes somewhere, maybe it's on the other side— you could repair the high tunnels. Hang with me, at the end of this I'm going to give you the The— oh, here it is. Look, here's pears. We got some damage. I'm gonna give you the overall theme that totally prevents spring fever. Well, you could figure out a way to keep chickens in, and that'll keep you busy for life. Right next to the chicken, we built this in the non-growing months. How about structures for your animals? I won't count this one. We could go around and collect all the buckets, wash the buckets. Let's see, we're at 3, although I could count this as 2. We won't. We'll try and try and challenge It's time to collect leaves. Call landscaping companies, drive around. People bag up leaves in the fall and put them on the curb for you just to pick them up. These are gonna break down, will be compost or mulch for the garden. I'll count this at the same category. Time to collect compost. Some more compost. A big one for us, remodel or fix up the house, get something done around the house that's been needing to be done. Include this one, pick up. Forget spring cleaning. We don't want spring cleaning, we want winter cleaning because We need to get busy on the farm in the spring. I think that was 5, 6. We can deep bed our animals. Look at all those deposits. That manure mixed with these wood chips is the source of our compost. More compost, more compost, more compost in the making. What are we at, 6, 7 lamb babies? And this is zone 7. It's okay, we can have lamb babies in January even though it gets single digits. It's sort of rare, and they did just fine. Single digits, no added heat. The deep bedding is some heat. 7 lamb babies in there. Oh look, that one's eating. It's time to check up on our trees. Good time to plant trees. I think this guy's dead. You scratch the bark, you don't get green, you get brown. It's dead. You dead down here? And this very alive down here. So that just means these sprouts are probably alive. This part's dead. The inventory of trees, replace any dead trees, mulch the string trim, mulch. See, I scratched it down there, it's green. These shoots tell me maybe it's still alive, but up here it died, so I think we'll be all right. Number 8: How about fencing or animal systems being put in place? This is stuff we wouldn't have time to do in the growing season. We got this round ring in place for training peaches. They just like to run around in this thing. You're crazy. Why this is fun to them, I'll never know. Most of this has to do with growing food. This ring has nothing to do with growing food, but we are more than people who grow food, aren't we? Supporting our daughter and her habit, teaching her great responsibility to have her have this own thing all to herself. How she enjoys and loves the farm. I enjoy and love the farm by working with my children, growing our food, but they may enjoy it in a different way. Okay, we gotta find 2 more things. Oh, it's time to fix stuff like this tree falling down in the creek. It's gonna dam it up and reroute the creek if we don't get this fallen tree. It's not sexy, it's not planting a new garden, it's not getting a new cow. But that kind of stuff has to get done too. Oh, I just thought of a 10th up there. We're clearing— that is extremely important. We need more acres. We're pasturing our forests. Should I give you a bonus at 11th? I don't know if I can get across this. Oh, oh, I was gonna go show you the firewood, but I got another one for you. Water line. It's time to put in water line systems. Oh, access roads. There's another one. And still another. Walking the boundary of your property, getting surveys, uh, just exploring. Firewood. It's time to do firewood. This be another bonus? How many we at? How many we at, Austin? Fun stuff for the kids. We built them a secret escape tunnel for an airsoft bunker. Today we're doing a contest. Last to take the hand off the airsoft gun wins it. This kind of stuff is hard to do in the busy growing months. That's it for 2-minute teaching. Got way more than that up my sleeve for the workshop and booklet coming out February 4th. Join me for that workshop, free Sunday afternoon. Y'all doing— do it again! Okay, do it again! Whoa, wow, that last storm! Hey, wait, don't do that! We should collect that, add it to the list. Be some amazing grits, mineral rich. Oh wow, that's so good! Wow! You doing it? All right. If you don't know, our little rocks that chickens eat, they put it in what you call their gizzard. See, chickens don't have a stomach, and that gizzard is a muscle that breaks down the food. It uses those rocks to break down the food. That's what I call it, rooster teeth. A recent rain event just landed this up here for us perfectly. Wow. Would it be easier just to drag it? Or pick it up onto a machine. Might be easier to drag it. No, no, I don't think I made my point about spring fever. I never get spring fever. If there's anything feverish about me in the spring, it's almost a panic because here comes the spring and all the things to do. I used to feel guilty about that and used to hide that. I mean, I'm the apron-wearing Permaculture Chicken Ninja Master. I'm supposed to be excited about spring, right? Well, but 1, 2, 3. 1, 2, 3. Wow. I wasn't particularly excited about spring, so I thought, what's wrong with me? And then I finally realized I don't get spring fever because I stay busy all year. And then I finally realized— and I realized I don't get spring fever because I stay busy all year round. That's the trick, get busy. Check on the guys. Oh my goodness, that's taking my mics to the next level. So Matt, I need those cameras set up so that they're always rolling, and we can also use them to see if they took their hands off. Taking this video serious. Got some lights, 4 mics, 2 camera guys signed up to edit a homestead vlog. Did you realize you would end up being last to take their hand off the airsoft gun? Not what I was thinking when I became Justin Rhodes editor. You're flexible, you're ready to go. Yes. Well, he's first come, first serve, I guess. Certain spot. John, be thoughtful about this. Anybody need to potty? Potty break's over. Okay, there's gonna be no potty break. Gonna film the intro here. Last to take their hands off this $350 airsoft gun wins it. It has officially begun. We have cameras watching every angle so nobody can cheat. I think they're already bored and it's been 3 minutes. I'll make it more interesting for you guys. I got hot tea. It's kind of cold in here. John's going for it. You can have all the drinks you want. She can't get up to go to the bathroom. So who got tea? I took a sip. Okay, good. That's all I'm taking. It's very good. How is it, Austin? It's delicious. It's really good tea. They have collaborated to go at the heat. I can't do it. Oh, don't anybody let off. First kink, I'll go first. Uno game. Okay, and loser has to do a difficulty. In this case, you can only touch the gun with one hand. It may be possible that Mr. Brown took his hand off. Stop the activity. Just chill out for a second. Look at this setup, man behind the curtain. Well, we're gonna have to look on the camera. He's holding on. He's holding on. Uh-oh, that was close. Oh, he took it off. Oh, it was close though. Gideon, I'm so sorry. I'll ask you how long. Come get warm. Come get warm. Well, we just wrapped it up. You guys are gonna have to go to the Rhodes Bros YouTube channel to see who won. It was— there was a battle. It was, it was a More intense than I thought it would be. That was a lot more intense than I thought. How's the editing gonna be? That's gonna be a lot more tough than I thought too. All right, two cameras rolling the entire time, plus this camera, plus his camera. It's gonna be a good video. Are you gonna be able to get it done by the time this vlog comes out? Sure. All right, we're gonna get it out. It's gonna be ready in the description. What'd you make us for dinner, Birdo? Mexican. Ooh, Taco Tuesday. What, you don't want a neck massage? Say goodbye to sore muscles. Goodbye, mussels! Taco Tuesday. Half Flossie, half our pork. Eggs are back in. Leftover cinnamon buns. They tempted the boys with cinnamon buns. Hey, take your hand off the gun. You can have a cinnamon bun. He's not high enough. Oh, I think it may have come out. Is it out the side? I like his bacon and eggs pajamas. I think it's all over the side of him. Changed, ready to go. Pork rinds. You extra hungry today? After all that? Not really. I ate lunch. Oh, that's right. Happy day, y'all! The story continues if you want to see the last Take Your Hand Off Airsoft Gun. At the Rhodes Bros. It's fun. Just take your mind off the troubles of the world and just relax and enjoy a fun, wholesome show on us.
