Laying out the Plumbing (Homestead House Remodel)

In this vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes and family members document a busy day on their homestead while coordinating a house remodel. The video interleaves farm chores—clipping chicken wings, managing fences, fixing water lines, and deep‑bedding work—with discussions about plumbing layout for the remodel. They debate installing a floor drain, an ice‑maker location, and ultimately choose a tankless water heater for endless hot water. The plumber arrives, experiences a sudden health issue, and later returns. Meanwhile, Lily Rhodes prepares banana‑bread and chocolate‑donut recipes for her cooking channel, which is being rebranded into "Cooking with Lily Rhodes" and a new "Lily Road Show". The family also mentions personal health (Lyme disease symptoms), livestock care, pasture irrigation design, and plans for future projects such as a whole‑house water filter and ice‑maker placement. The vlog blends instructional, informal, and enthusiastic tones, offering a snapshot of daily homestead life, remodel logistics, and content‑creation workflow.

You brushing Toby Dog? Just started reading Morgan's new book, Toby Dog. It's so good. Youth book. Uh, fell asleep to it last night. It's not a bad thing. That's a good thing. Surprise! Jessica Sowards did the foreword. Beautiful. Such a good writer. Adorable as this is, we've got to get going. You can bring Toby Dog with you. We gotta count chickens. Clip wings. We gotta hurry. The chickens are cooped up. Maybe we're gonna get a ride. Did you tell Sam about that old video you watched?
I'm from Texas and I'm here today with Mr. Road and he is teaching, um, and he is showing us all the different chores you do in the morning on a farm. Is that— isn't that right, Mr. Rook?
That's perfect.
Did you look at the camera? Yes.
I'm Sam. I'm from Texas.
How many years ago was that? I don't know, maybe like 5. You were like half this size, you and John. Gideon, where's your other shoe? Classic.
So mad right now.
1, 2, 3, 4 chickens out. What is gonna keep y'all in yesterday? I did open this up and I didn't secure it. Did they get out through there? Do I need to put more staples in, like right here? Is this a problem? They're not much for precision flight. Let's get these guys in. It ain't worth it to have a fortress when a chicken constantly going back and forth looking for escape. I guess it's eventually going to find the slightest weakness. Blending our pasture posse with our compost posse. We're gonna count these Where are you getting out? Hey, why is nobody helping me? Hey, do you know how to cook the chicken wings? I forgot to put the big chickens up. I would have liked to done that so that I could mark them, differentiate them, harvest them next year. Two roosters, this could be a fight. This is normal. Two roosters about the same size, they have to fight it out and figure out who's boss. The black one's submitting. It's submitted, it's over. Just like that. Hey, we got some action on the homestead house remodel! We got the plumber here. Go see if he needs any help, see what he's gonna do today. But first we gotta finish clipping these wings. Paul the Inquirer, I'm cleaning out the chick shop. Well, finished just in time. Well, still got a little bit of cleaning to do, but the chickens are out and the beautiful one's calling me up to the remodel. You want to go see Mom? He wants to go up to Grandma's, but she's not here. So this ice maker was going to go over there, but we're not doing it. I know, it's a phase 2.
Well, and I don't even know if we're going to do that. So my thought was, are we going to put this floor drain in or no?
No. Okay, we're getting rid of that coal room.
Do we want to put the ice maker in here and it will drain? It'll have a drain.
Here.
Yeah, yeah, because I mean, that'd be easier.
But can we get— we don't want to do this because we already have it drilled, right?
You want something because you can't just have an open pipe or stuff's gonna fall down it. You can't direct connect it.
You can't direct—
you can't direct connect because if it ever backs up, it's going to back up into your ice bin.
The other thing I wanted to ask is I want to get like a whole house filter. It'll be just like, um, like just run through things. When do you need that to get that in? [Speaker] I'm guessing that'll be finished.
[Speaker] Okay, okay.
This doesn't have to be drywalled. I don't care if I see that. This space down here, I'm not like considering it to be like this beautiful space.
Upstairs to lay out the plumbing.
Water heater. We hadn't decided 100% what we're gonna do. Do we want— because what, how long do we use the wood boiler? 3, 4 months?
[Speaker] Yeah.
[Speaker] Do we want to just do tankless?
[Speaker] Is tankless the most efficient?
[Speaker] Tankless is.
Yeah, and then you get endless hot water. That's the good thing.
You never run out. Sounds like we decided on the tankless hot water heater. Endless hot water.
Since we're putting the ice maker like inside the house now, do we want to put an ice maker up here? And I'll just, I'll be in charge of getting the bin of ice up here. In the long run, it'd probably be nice to have an ice maker upstairs.
And then we're gonna send—
sending children.
Let me go get you plants. Do you want the big roll of plants?
Yeah, I want the big roll of plants.
Going to get bigger plants. We had Lily bring down just a small printout. Way too small. This gentleman is here. He's helping us get into our house. The house that we love. We love. We are gonna keep him busy and going. That's first priority above everything today. Where are y'all going?
To get some groceries.
Okay, well then come back. Where's Henry? Okay, get him, get him some food too and bring it down here. Try to get him away from Mom. She's having to carry him. There you go.
Okay, that goes to him.
He's the guy. Bones got to go to acupuncture. Let's see if we can't go help Josiah. What? Where? This chicken's acting crazy. Okay, yeah, we, we gotta get this fence on. Let's catch that one that's out and then turn this fence on. You think they're going through that?
Yeah, they fly in.
I don't think they precision fly. We might have missed this one this morning. There's so much pressure on this fence right now. Two-thirds of these people aren't used to being in here. If they get out, somebody's gonna eat them. It's a race to see who can eat the chickens first. Hey, is that the second cow?
Yeah.
Would you rather me go do water or would you rather me milk? You, you can go do water. This never works. You can't— this water has to be on this side, granted, but if you put it on this side, the cows bother it. They have no sense of delayed gratification. This auto valve on the downhill, if you put that up here, it'll never fill up and it'll never stop the water. See, this floater stops the water. So it has to be down here. So the only place you can do that is at the bottom of the hill. There wasn't enough hose, but we just have to go get more hose. And we don't really want to run the hose through the paddock because they step on it, they trip on it, they— it gets pooled. Or in this hole, it doesn't wash out our bank. FYI, that'd be how a swell would work. Instead of running off the mountain and washing away during a rain event, a swell catches water like that and then it slowly seeps into the ground. That's not a swell, that's just a, a ditch we dig for the water line. I thought I'd show you how the concept— while we're here, we have done that with our roads. Our roads now will catch water, but because they're on 2.5 degrees, it slowly creeps out. All the while, the ground is absorbing it, so we're capturing all that water instead of it running off. Might be easier to catch this water, fix that water line, because we need to fix that water line anyway. They'll probably graze this one more time. Before deep bedding. I'm gonna take the milk because nature is calling. You can't run because it jostles it, but you can't not run because it's coming fast.
All right, well, we made it.
And all the meanwhile, Gideon's been cream separating and setting up for milk. You got a whole quart of cream and they're loving this pasture. Let me help you. Since I'm out, right?
Yeah.
Okay, let's check out what Josiah was able to rig up to not put the trough at the bottom of the hill. This can work too. He just propped it up here. Now that's sticking out, they're probably gonna trip on that and move it. But I'm holding the camera level right here. Definitely leaning that way, which is good. It'll— a lot of water will catch and nobody can get behind it to bother this source. No way. Oh, it's probably because they didn't eat this down as much, but it could also be because these feathers from a chicken butchering provide nitrogen and the grass is greener. Yellow, green, yellow, green, yellow, green. That is because the cows just didn't eat it because of the feathers there, or is it making it greener? Acho is back in our mobile wrestling ring. More on that in a video next last week. We've had to nurse him a little bit. There's that crazy chicken. Done. I got zero greens. I'm always finding one shoe, and I see it doesn't have a match. Are you happy now? I should probably wash these immediately as opposed to putting it off, or else they just sit in the sink and risk getting broke. Hey, what are you doing on the counter? I'm on You think those are onions? Good job snapping that bean. Hey, if you're gonna snap beans, you might as well do it. See this stringy thing here? Snap that off, Henry. Or just snap it in the middle. Okay, Lily, let's go. Let's go do our project. Extremely close second is getting those pigs off that deep bedding. Look, horses! You wanna play with the horses? This is a job for the truck. Hey, let's go. Turn it down. Go inside. Won't be long before you're driving. This is the front wall to our deep bedding, bedding paddock. I would say it's what you call semi-permanent. Like, it can be removed, you just don't want to remove it a lot.
We're gonna go see the houses.
All right, if it keeps him happy. Don't go in them though, it's got strange liquid in it. Josiah went to his lesson and I think he took the truck keys with him.
I got to get some keys. I'll be back.
Tricia, do you have the truck key?
How do you spell the word—
He just said it's on the dashboard. You guys see the key? You found it?
Yeah, it was in the back. It was in the back.
It was in the back. This goes there in front of that bay, just like this. The pigs need to get out of this deep bedding and come into this bed. We're gonna use this quarter, third way broke down bedding as mulch slash— it's probably a little bit of compost in it— for our access road project to cover it. Graded our pasture access roads, and we want those to continue to be grass. It's bare right now, which is bad, but we've got to get seed here. We've got to get mulch here. We're going to need some more mulch. We got some hay coming. Where is Randolph? Randolph, where nature's modest and she likes to be covered. We've got to hurry up and get her covered, but— oh, we're waiting on a seeder, we're waiting on our seed, and we're waiting on a liquid, a liquid spreader. Yeah, we're gonna do some milk application, some fertilizer. Randolph, the fool. Ah, I kept seeing his trailer thinking he was here, but he ain't here. There's no truck attached to that trailer. Plumber had some sudden health concerns and had to kind of leave in an emergency. I hope he's gonna be all right. Oh, she's about to cook up a storm! What are we cooking today, Lily?
Banana bread.
We are knocking out 2 recipes, 2 videos for your channel all at once. Her baking content has taken off. We consolidated your current channel, renamed it to Cooking with Lily Rhodes, and we're going to take your other content, create a new channel called the Lily Life Show.
No, Lily Road, the Lily Road Show.
I like it, that's a good costume. And the silliest outfit you have at home. Where's your outfit, John? Um, do you have a Star Wars outfit? No. Where's your outfit?
Uh, I'm gonna make you one.
They're getting ready for their special airsoft battle royale. To have your motorcycle outfit, you could be a motorcycle man. You'd be the chicken. I like it. All right, we're at a stopping point for Lily. We're gonna do another recipe. All the banana bread cooked. Mom will be home very soon. She's very hungry. It's like 2:30. Welcome back. Heard from the plumber and he did not have a heart attack. He had a torn muscle.
Have some muffins in the oven.
I know, why are you leaving them there?
Get them off the oven. You think he'll stay asleep?
He's growing, little boy.
Whoa, what happened? Well, with your hand.
Well, it's— someone fell out of the top and went down here. People, they're probably going to be probably a lot cleaner than me.
Why do you say that?
I don't know. I'm just really dirty.
We just wrapped up banana bread, banana bread video, a chocolate donut video that will be on her channel, Cooking with Lily Rhodes. Today, Lyme disease is getting the best of me. I'm gonna need to lay out in the sun for a second. What does my Lyme feel like? Well, Right now I'm really tired and my feet hurt really bad, particularly after a 2-hour baking session. How's your plumbing homework going? Well, we decided we're not having an ice maker upstairs, huh?
Well, he's gonna get me the quote. We're gonna see what it is.
Well, Mom, it's like you're back in college. You get your plumbing homework done.
What?
Tub shopping? Uh-huh.
Brush my hair!
On your mark, get set, go! Got the PV drone behind them. Weirdo. The video of Jonah and Josiah biking to pizza— boys are off to a good start. It's dropping on their channel, Rhodes Bros. I'll leave the link for it in the description. It's so good. Let's go slower. I want to burn out the first 5 miles.
Thank you.
I tried to tell them that. I literally tried to tell y'all that. Y'all did not listen. This is like a documentary of their adventure It was so cute. Take your time. Curated. This is like the third time we've watched it. Oh, you know what I'm talking about. You biked 15 miles to pizza. So proud of you. Now I have a video to prove it.
