Letting Go to the Next Generation

Victor Justin Rhodes and his family work their homestead, clearing forest and moving firewood while the kids learn responsibility. They prioritize preventive health through chiropractic care and nutrition, and fit Jonah with a new bike at REI as he takes on more responsibilities. The day shows how early physical work, shared meals, and teaching independence build a lasting legacy.

Gideon did a killer job cleaning the porch yesterday. I mean, really? La la la la la, let me be free. What motivated you to clean up the porch so good last night? I don't know. Happy day! Oh, punch yourself! Whoa! And welcome to another day in the life. A day in the life of a family on a health journey to build a lasting legacy. And we got some firewood. The boys and mom split that yesterday, and our new shed is coming in very handy. Keeping that dry is going to be clutch. Ready for the project today? Yeah, what is it? Let's hit it. You still don't want our kids to learn how to drive. I gotta turn the wheel the opposite way. Is this one? There it is. Yep, that's it. Project clearing more forest so we can have more pasture to satisfy our dairy habit. I don't see the chainsaw stuff. All right, go ahead, let's go find Jonah, ask him where it's at. Too blessed to stress. We only got an hour and a half to work from right now. We're up early so we can actually get something done, but going around and looking for things doesn't seem very productive. Do you know where the chainsaw is? And the chaps? Good thing this is the, uh, 2 acres down there. He left it outside. I told him we should get this stuff ready last night and he said no, no, no. It's all there in the shed. Where do you think he is? Old house is a pool. It's over there. Hit the tracks. Good. Where's the chainsaw? I've been spending 10 minutes looking for this. Right next to the Mini X. We didn't check there. Right next to the Mini X after I used it yesterday. We did. Is the Mini X not up there? It's right there. That's at least Please put it where we keep it. There's a bear and it got me. If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lay down. Is it black or is it brown? It looks brown to me. Have you done your chores? Yeah. The track loader needs some hydraulics, so I'm gonna just coach him. Get your escape Hat ready. The saw in the lock. Let's call it. Just find a good place to park. I have to make one more cut. Okay, you say we're over halfway done with this one acre? A little bit over halfway, you guys say? Just to the horizon there, a little over halfway, huh? No, no, ton of stumps. Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, if you count tidying up, no way we're halfway, huh? All right, sawing though. Maybe. I think it gets thinner over here. I think it gets thicker. Oh, is it? Look at how thin that is right there. Yeah, not how much the pasture is brushed. Yeah, I mean, theoretically you can get anything to burn if you get hot enough. Hey, I feel really good about getting up this morning and getting something done. Usually these town days can feel unproductive. What about you? It's one of my favorite. I don't know if y'all exercise, but it kind of has that feeling to it. If you get up in the morning and exercise, you get it out of the way, you don't think about it the rest of the day, kind of feel good about it, you know, uh, burn— burns the fat rest of the day. I don't know, something special about getting the physical work done in the morning. So end is about right there, so we got that much more. Oh, you got you a quesadilla? Get off, Napoleon! Make yourself a dang quesadilla! Fine. Where's your Dilla? I don't have one. I just have good stuff. Just the good stuff. How's your Dilla, huh? This is man butt. Yeah. You didn't have the same reaction this one has. I know, he just was like ignoring you. He's like— Is that not cold? Still wiping it off. Still upset with you, Justin. I left myself 30 minutes and we're still rushing out the door. Jonah getting some hours in on the way to the chiropractor. Critical part of our health. How critical is this chiropractor appointment for you, babe? For me? Yeah. No, it's just general health for me, Jonah, and Henry. Henry's calling me the whole time. Why do you like to be in front of the lens? Are you a showboat? We're there. You guys want us to go in? Yeah. No. You'll go in. All right, take one shot on your phone then, Beck. Uh, you guys have a 1 in 10 chance that Rebecca will actually remember to get this shot and not get caught up in talking with the practitioner whom we love. So Austin, give them a B-roll clip to make this more interesting of somebody getting some chiropractor. All right, take a deep breath inside profile. Take a deep breath in and deep breath, deep breath in. Deep breath. How was it? Oh, I forgot to get a shot. Yeah, you did. How critical is it that you go? I feel like I need to go. I wish I could go every week, but I— That's a lot of extra. It's too much time. Let's stop at REI to pick up Jonah's bike. Come on, Gideon, let's go. Time to make Jonah be a man. If things are going badly, make them worse. Be a man. And talk to the associate himself. Okay, good bike? Yes. Was it a new bike or was it in for service? I'm 5'7" now. I know, you're growing. You've grown a lot this— you've grown a lot since July. Yeah, we had to measure him in there for a bike and he is 5'7" because he's already outgrown his bike by a lot. How tall are you? I'm, I'm between 5'5" and 5'6". Oh, it beat you! This is going to be an adventure. The co-op with the kids. You got a cart? Here. You just played your kid. There you go. Lily's into this. She is. She is into this. Okay, we got one. You guys aren't into this? Barely got it all in there with Jonah's bike and everything. Back home. We just killed the takeaway lunch from Chipotle. Any leftovers? No, this is how your bit should look every day. Did you wash it or something? Yes, he let Blaze eat grain while he had his bridle on and then he didn't clean it off. Apparently that's the obvious no-no. Feels like we just ate and then this one's going at it again. We get hungry at the same times, so we've been eating together a lot. Not all meals, just second breakfast, lunch, second lunch, and first dinner. I think it's our favorite night though. Burger night. Okay, afternoons tend to be, uh, I go through a slump. Anybody else go through a slump in the afternoon? One minute I'm ready to conquer the world with energy and ideas and motivation, and the next minute I'm crashing. So this is what I did. Just took a break, had an afternoon protein, 2 deviled eggs, a tea, a little bit of honey, just a little bit. I'm a little bit, I'm a little bit. Look at this North Carolina fresh meal: broccoli, sweet potatoes. That's an easier way to fry them, isn't it, Beck? Did a good job on dinner, Becky. Jonah cut up the condiments. Mom, it's your best buns ever. Somehow something as neutral tasting as a bun Makes a burger just so much better. Being low carb, I pick the littlest one. Lots of healthy fat, homemade mayonnaise, a little bit of ketchup, onions, pickle, and then I put 3 burger patties on it. He put mustard on it. He mixed it. Just mustard. Here it comes. I like it. You like it? Yeah. You like it? Wow, that's a miracle. Tell everybody happy day. Happy day.
