Victor Justin Rhodes shows a day on his homestead after recent surgeries, feeding chickens with maggot compost, fixing the gravity-fed water system for livestock, and working on kitchen and attic renovations. He's healing from a broken nose while helping Jonah recover from surgery.

What chores are you gonna do?
The little chicks, the turkeys, the sea monsters, and the breakfast.
The height of laziness right there, laying down and eat, you pig. Is that Randolph? Randolph's back. Boogeyman. Hey, well, I got about an hour, that's all I got. Is that it? Getting our drawer fixed. So you got the chimney down? Yes, sir. I hate I missed that. That's the funkiest drawer you've ever seen. I guarantee you it is. I mean, that's nook and cranny right there. Hey, hey, hey, hey, leave it out for the machine. Washing. It's our monthly machine wash. Gideon wants me to take him up the mountain board. Are you gonna ride down the mountain? You're gonna ride down the mountain first? Where'd it go? All right, we gotta add to the maggot bucket. We lost the sea monster. Gideon, look at your chicks! We already got some activity. No way, we just put the rooster in there yesterday. This is where ornery roosters go and dead sea monsters. It's a stink already. That's a good sign.
Thanks.
It's pretty gross. Flies go in there, lay their eggs, larva develops, comes out through the holes, feeds our chickens, which is pretty critical right now, especially since I'm questioning the feed. These guys could use all the free protein feed they could get. What is it? It's cold outside? You got that toboggan on? Hey, that's our house. All right, Mrs. Kim, you're looking like a real adult right now. You had a carpool, and Mrs. Kim would always have her coffee. Either way, you're looking all grown up. Did you get all the good rocks out?
Hold my tongue.
A couple right here. They just started over with a new layout. They've swept. Looks nice. What do you think? Is it on so far?
Well, and the plans show this, but I don't like this. The plans show this.
You're gonna change it?
But I don't want— we don't need a shelf in the shower.
It's different now. Yeah, and you did it right. This one is the other plan. You did it right. It's just we changed our mind.
When I wake up at night, I think about everything. But I was like—
Hopefully good thoughts.
Yes. I'm gonna have a lemon tree in here.
Is that a thing?
Mm-hmm. We're not gonna do a big lemon tree. It's gonna be like a dwarf lemon tree. This is where I'm gonna keep all my houseplants, a lot of my houseplants.
We're gonna keep them alive?
Yes.
We haven't had the best history with indoor plants.
I'm doing pretty good right now. And then there's gonna be a drop zone over there, and then there's gonna be a mudroom downstairs. So we're gonna have lots of places. Entryway, and like a real foyer. Like it's like this is like for so long we just entered into the kitchen. This is so exciting.
They're gonna have it framed probably today as fast as they are. Can't keep up with them. Lily, can you help me get them over? Don't even have to call them and they're such a routine. There you go. My nose is feeling good, and that's what frightens me. It's healing wrong, and I don't get seen for another 6 days. Yeah, they're gonna have to re-break my nose. We've got to get water to our cows where they are today, but the water line, if I remember right, has lots of leaks. I think I have a solution. You think these hose clamps will be better than just the pinch clamps? Yeah, these pinch clamps, although convenient, are not as sturdy. Water Mom's tomatoes while we're at it too. No leaks here. We got a drip there. All these tomatoes are getting washed, I think, because we're getting kinks like this. Now we're dripping. Sure enough, there's kinks. Look at that kink. Happy wife, happy life. Garden of peace. Josie, let me go get a time-lapse of them picking up these rumble rubble. And maybe by that time we build up enough pressure and we have a compromise. Hey, why aren't you wearing both shoes? Big here, but so is it working? It's not working. That could be why we don't have any leaks. It's not working. It's already so hot and gonna be hot. Cows are really gonna need their water. Okay, we have water, but we might have a breach from here to there. It's really strange. Oh, there it comes. Why didn't that work before? It's a jungle. No leak there. Thankfully, no leak there. I think I hear a leak. Sure enough, busted right here. Josiah went for a hose, so now we just wait. All right, let's torch it. Any leaks here? Is the water going to the cows? Yeah. Heck yeah, we did it! Feel good to solve some problems. That's what we do, problem solvers. Worst lessons for Lily. This time she wanted a GoPro, so you guys look at the angle. From the horse. Yay! Hot, Lily? What's that doing?
Getting the water off so she's not so wet.
She's taking care of her plants underneath the overhang. Beck, I'm gonna go, uh, check the pig forest situation to see what it's going to take to get our piglets out into the woods.
Okay.
Whoa, a lot of pressure and that's a lot of dirt. That pig land— we're gonna see right now what it's gonna take to get those guys out to the forest, out of that deep bedding, into the forest where they would rather be. Our gravity-fed water is working. We're just cleaning it out a little bit. Sometimes sediment builds up in here. To turn this on. It was stiff and it broke. Okay, we need to turn it that way. Don't get me out of this. I got it. And all that dirt would have clogged up this depressurizer. I'm not gonna be able to turn this off, switch this around. So I'm getting ready to get wet. I have to take this off to flip it around, clean it out. It's too much pressure on it. Quick connect is not loosening up. Do this. Well, that helps because then it takes some— at least the water is not running on, on it down here. Hard. Yeah, okay, look at that. Valve's not opening all the way. We're gonna need to replace that. Put that on the list. That's what we're doing. We're just checking things out today. Isn't this nice? Pigs love it out here. I hear it. I think it's going now. Last time I put those pigs out here. They were busting out and we were about to go on a trip. I've trained them, although I used a Premier One gate. I didn't use this fence to train. I've done that in the past, it's been absolutely no problem. This time, maybe they didn't get the memo. We're gonna have to make sure this is really hot. Maybe they didn't get the memo that it's the same, that same, you know what I'm saying? And they were busting through. If they're not trained to it, they put their nose on it, it shocks them, and then they run through it. The other problem is, our Energizer still working? It's blinking red, means it's dead. Why is it so wet in here? What gives? It's just sitting out here and this happens. Put that on the list. Add string trimming to the list. No need to straighten it up yet until we Bring a string trimmer. We need another day on that one. So if you want to see pigs in their happy place, which is a lot of fun, you have to tune into the next one. Hey, hey, what you cooking?
I'm making this salad dressing.
Everything that could go wrong out there is wrong. So from the water to the feeder to the fence, it's another day on the homestead, right? Evening inspection.
I'm assuming what they're doing because they're gonna move this over.
Okay.
Oh, I think—
Shawn thought it would maybe interfere with going downstairs.
Yeah. So this is our kitchen.
Okay.
11-foot island.
There's no walls between the kitchen and the dining room and the living room. These stairs have to flip so that we can actually access them from over there. They got the office framed in. You see a little library nook up in there, an attic space. About to walk through the wall. This is our closet. Bedroom framed in. Roof is going to be brought down to 9 feet. So we're talking about what we're gonna do with all this attic space. That window is clutch right there. Yeah, look at that. That's right, water. You like the new house? Put your foot here on the pedal.
No, he turns on brake, I think.
What's the plan tonight, Matt?
Just gonna start putting them up.
All right, let's do it. And then weeding around them. You tie them first and then weed?
Yeah. So a lot of times I just need someone to hold it up so I can see what I'm snipping off.
Becca, you're saving your tomatoes. Look at this. Still bushy here, but we got to call it a day. She nailed it here. They can actually breathe. Feels good, Beck. A lot calmer now that Jonah's surgery's over for some reason. I know he's actually doing less in this recovery than he was going into it, but it's still— there's still a breath of fresh air here.
