Chapters
All right, we're live, getting folks on. Actually gonna play a little game for those of you replay viewers watching this. We're actually gonna go through my book. The advanced copies have arrived. I'm gonna have it— Jessica, Jason, Derek from Grass Grazed. Who else we got? Maybe we can get Megan before she leaves. Uh, Bree. Okay, yeah. Oh shoot, you gotta go get them. You go get them and hand them out. Over in the junk drawer. Okay, $2 bills for all the kid guests. Okay, all right, Jason. Well, who's leaving right away? Uh, y'all be here a minute? Okay, we got some people just dripping in anyway, so letting the folks get on. I need somebody who's— okay, well, y'all are standing right here, so pick a number 1 through 10. Jessica?
9.
9. Okay. Can you tell me what chapter number 9 is?
Like, are you quizzing me or do you want me to open it up?
I think I can remember the name.
Chapter number 9.
All right, let's see.
I knew you'd like it. Well, you could go to the chapter or you could go to the table of contents.
Thanks for teaching me how books work. Rooted as a Family.
Rooted as a Family. Okay. So best advice, Jessica. What's your best advice you can give somebody to get rooted as a family?
Intentional time together, I would say, is really important where you connect. And like, I think seeking understanding with one another, being intentional and understanding.
How do you guys do that in a practical way?
I mean, a lot of conversation, and I try to approach each member of my family, each one of my kids Maya, and like ask them questions. And then don't filter it through who I am, but like really hear who they are and try to value that. Like, I have kids that like video games. Like, I don't care about video games.
I think they're stupid. You don't get it, but you know they like it.
It's valuable to them, so I have to put value on it because they put value on it.
Yeah, you did that in Wildersteel. We just watched Wildersteel episode 5. You considered them in the timing of your move. You took their pleas or requests that they get there in time for school. Yeah. To not be moving at school.
That was a really hard thing for us, but like we were discussing in the discussion after watching the episode, I got really sick this winter, and had we not listened to our kids and what they needed, I'd have been going through that trying to move, which would have been really honestly impossible to do. I was not in a fit state to do anything.
So it ended up working out.
Yeah, it ended up really being what was better and listening to them.
Cool. Pick a number 1 through 10.
Um, not 9.
7. Okay, tell us what chapter 7 is. We gotta catch Meg before she leaves. Hey, how do you like that $2 bill? We got all the kids a $2 bill.
That is so cool. 7, Sweet Synergy: Gardening with Chickens.
Okay, any advice for gardening with chickens?
That's his job.
That's the only way you can get me in the garden is that the chickens are in the garden.
Then I'll be in the garden. Yeah.
So that's your duty. Oh, to get the chickens out of the garden? They're his chickens when they get in the garden unwanted.
When you have a wife who's yelling at you because they ruined—
Man, can I ask you a question? We're live, is that okay? Okay. Pick a number 1 through 10. We'll get back to you. She's about to leave. Pick a number. Oh, Jessica's my assistant.
This is great. Okay, you didn't like—
You didn't have a good answer for some. Okay, any advice for gardening with chickens? Yeah. Put them in your garden. Not like, not like in your house. I like it. That's what that's about. Look at his face.
You lost your mind? No, I mean afterwards.
When the garden's done. When there's no fighting. You don't have to clean it after.
They do the gardening.
That's right. I like it.
That's exactly it.
She's running outside to throw her chickens in her garden that she just planted, and then she's gonna come cry.
You wouldn't let me finish.
She's saying, Meg said to do it. I hear you.
At the end.
You're going— that was a good answer because that's what I said in the book. Yeah, that's what we did.
They're giving us $2 for some socks.
Now, Meg, you got to go home and read your advanced copy.
I've been— I've started it. I only get this much time to read with kids.
I know.
But I try.
It's a lot easier to scroll. You can scroll with one hand. It's hard to flip a book with two hands.
Just put the kids in the garden with the chickens.
Yeah, I should do that.
And then go read.
They'll take care of them.
Yeah, but there's electric fences for the kids.
Beautiful.
Okay, thanks, thanks. Good, very excited. Good. All right, I'll let you go. I know you're heading out.
Thank you. I'll not be staring right now. She's like, let's go right now.
I'm coming. Look, he's going to honk. Okay, who we got?
Thank you.
Lorraine Jason. Lorraine Jason. Lorraine Jason, pick a number 1 through 10. It cannot be 7 or 9. I mean, it could be rising. Okay, tell us what chapter.
Raising Chickens for Eggs.
Oh, this is a good one for you guys. So give us some advice. Give us some hard-hitting, to-the-point advice for raising chickens for eggs. Um, get how many chickens for how many people. Ah, yeah.
And keep their, their net— they're women. Yeah, they like a happy, clean home, so make their nest box clean.
With fresh hay. Well, I prefer a portable, uh, portable chicken coop.
Oh yes, we prefer portable.
Okay, you've done both. To be fair, you've done both. You're not going back to stationary?
No, no.
And both of you on board with that? That's right, right? Yeah, makes the area better. You can move it, it's easier to clean. You can make the— and you can make a pretty mobile coop. Okay, my yard, yes. So you can make it happen. Okay, so thanks guys. Thanks for that. Who's next? They were saying big move. You guys, congratulations on the big move. Oh yeah, thank you. You've got— you're gonna start over. Videos are coming. And that was cool. That's one thing you're gonna do different going into the next homestead, is mobile. Yeah, we're going all mobile. Yeah, yeah. I was gonna say, on your chicken thing, I know how many eggs— yes, I say that in the book. I actually talk about find out how many you want. So one chicken will give you 3-ish eggs a week. Yep. So find out how many dozen eggs you want a week. If you just need a dozen eggs, you just need 4 chickens. You don't have to have 40 chickens. Depending on how many you have in your family. Because people can overdo it. Are you a crazy chicken man? Well, I do have names for my chickens. Yeah. Does that mean I am? You might be. This is live. They're asking if this is live. Yes, this is live. We're celebrating my book. It just came, The Root of Life, and I'm getting people's advice on it. Um, what did you say?
No, I do, I do name my chickens.
Oh yes, okay, that's what's gonna go with this. So you might be a crazy chicken lady if you name them. Do you have more than 12 per person in the house? Chickens per person? So we have 20. No, so you're not a crazy chicken lady. But you know what, we're getting 20 more in about a month. Okay, well you're approaching, you're encroaching crazy chicken lady. All right, thanks. Okay, who we got? Grass Graze. Grass Grays, come here, come on down, come on down. What, you guys want to pick a number 1 through 10? No 7 or 9. Phone is being really weird.
Can't be 7 or 9, right?
Thank you, Tanya. It's at therootedlife.com. Thank you, Adam. Yeah, y'all picking up? Do y'all know the Grass Grays? We just, we just interviewed them for 3 hours, probably 3 hours and 15 minutes. Your story from going from Regular job, if you can call military a regular job. Yeah, uh, just kind of living a normal life. You're probably one of the most least likely, based on your story, to actually become market farmers. Correct. And now you're full-time market farmers. Yep. Fun story, fun story. I can't wait for folks to hear it.
Okay, number.
So that'll be on the Buns Plus. Yeah, pick a number.
Oh, you did that?
We just did 5.
Okay, you pick.
Uh, 10. Oh, good.
Just Plant.
Okay, so Just Plant, the chapter 10 in my book, Just Plant, is all about motivation. It's all about the closing charge. Just go get it. So give us a hard-hitting best advice for just getting off your butt and just start doing it.
Derek's the one.
What would you say to somebody on the couch?
On the couch, I would say, we're talking farming or gardening, Just order the seeds, order the chicks, order the seeds, or order the chicks, the soil, whatever you need that you think is keeping you from starting. Yeah, like if you, if you need seeds to grow, order the seeds. Don't worry about everything else, just get the seeds. Chickens, if you want to raise chickens, backyard chickens, if you don't have the coop yet, you can figure the coop out, but order the chickens and it'll— yeah, just take the step.
Yeah, just do that. Says a lot coming from them because we just learned in the interview was when y'all started eating healthier and your farmer contact ran out, ultimately you decided to grow your own chickens. Yeah. You knew nothing. Nothing. You knew— you probably didn't even know that you're supposed to brood them. No. Nothing.
No.
You just found a hatchery and you actually ordered these chicks.
Order them in the mail.
Nothing. From Maine. On the way. You're going to have to figure it out. I think that's a great approach, actually.
It is. Do it.
Yeah, it forces you to do it. It's so much. It's 25 chicks or so much.
3 or 4 days to get ready. It does, it does.
It'll take— we got it done in a very short amount of time. Like, but if you—
you'll figure it out.
I mean, because if we had done the chicken tractor first, then we still— that wouldn't have made us order the chickens.
But if you get the chickens, actual feed, you have an actual live animal, you're gonna— you're gonna figure it out.
You're gonna do what it takes. Yeah, yeah, cool deal. Yeah, cool deal. Who else we got? I think I've gotten— I think— yeah, Rebecca. I think, I think y'all— okay, I think, I think that, I think that we're good. Hey, thanks for coming to the live show. We're talking about— we're celebrating the book. Where is it? We're celebrating my book, A Rooted Life. That's what it feels like. Adam's in the house. Somehow you got one, Adam, but They're not officially shipping till March 1st, but here we go. We're celebrating this. We just did, uh, some quick advice from some of my friends on living out this. They're each living out their Rooted Life. We invite you guys to live that out with us. If you order by March 1st, I'm getting ready to sign until my hand hurts, and I'm going to sign this and I'm going to put— well, We'll mail these to you, so you're gonna have to go to therooterlife.com, order, then fill out step number 2. You do— you fill out your information and we'll send you a plate. These are stickers. These are just white stickers, the Rooter Life logo on it, and you put it inside your book and then you've got a signed copy. Sending out seeds as well, basil seeds. You'll know what I mean and why I'm sending basil seeds when you read the book. Oh, you didn't use Amazon, Adam. Hmm. Okay, anyway, guys, you can go to therootedlife.com. The books, uh, it looks like the books are going for about $25. So we're going, uh, we're going through a publisher this time with this, and books are for sale anywhere books are for sale. You can see if it's there, but you get 4 choices if you go to therootedlife.com. It includes like Books-A-Million, Barnes Noble, Amazon, of course, and I forget the other ones. But thank you, Patch. It's so cool to have written a book and have hold it in my hand. I think books are timeless. You know, as a filmmaker, I make movies, and one way to make that physical was DVDs, but nobody's doing DVDs anymore. So there is something to be said about being able to hold something physical. I can't wait till I can go to events and meet all you and sign that, or, or have those there and be signing them. It's different than like signing a DVD, you know what I mean? And nobody watches those anymore. So anyway, thanks for coming to the live show. You can go to therootoflife.com and get that. Uh, thanks for the Super Chat, man. I hope you guys aren't like— this glare, sorry for this glare. I had to use Rebecca's phone, my phone died. But anyway, love and appreciate you guys. I would encourage you to get in there before March 2nd. Hey, Debbie Mass, I know you do. I know you love me because you've already ordered, and I appreciate it so much. So thank you guys so much. Yeah, now DVDs are collectibles. So yeah, we hope you guys have a great evening. Talk to you later. Thanks for coming to the show. See you in the book.
