Look How 48 Chickens Do my Gardening

Justin Rhodes moves 48 chickens through his winter garden to manage the beds while fixing frozen equipment and planning a diesel generator installation. The family also coordinates sandbag purchases for flood protection and prepares for a new Bernadoodle puppy.

Done with our current garden job. I want them on another garden job. It's 18 degrees out right now. Let's get the other animals out real quick and then we'll move them. Oh snap! Oh, Jonah forgot to unplug the spigot. This is a frost-free spigot, but it— the water is all frozen up in here right now. Hopefully this is not ruined. If you leave this hose on and this on, water's called upon and water's up in here. Otherwise, when you turn this off and there's no hose on here, water drains down to below freezing. That's how these water hydrants work. Let me show you. That's the quickest way to break those things too. Okay, good, this one's been unplugged.
I don't know what happened.
18 degrees and we don't have a frozen Don't have— haven't fed them yet. The boys can feed them. I'm just kind of in a hurry to get everybody do the things that they can't do— the water— and get everybody out. Hey, good morning. You left that spigot on down there. It is jacked.
Whoops. You looking for a water bucket, honey?
There's myself too.
Oh, good job. Perfect. I sort of need Lily's water bucket for the luchadors. Uh, this will do. Yeah, they'll freeze like as easy. This is not even— it's not frozen at all. Look, it's not even slushy.
Papa?
Yeah?
I can't use this bucket.
See?
Well, a little bit of dirt in their bath is okay. Okay, is that what you're talking about? But I have a scrubber. Do you need some help? Yeah. Did I tell that yet? Concrete slab. We're getting a diesel generator. Not gonna fool around with our 10 freezers slash fridges with our precious harvest. It's on its way. The men are working on it this week.
The lilies are growing.
Oh my gosh, well, they're in for a shock. Yeah, they thought it was spring with the 60-degree days. Look at Donald, 18 degrees out, he still wants to take a bath.
I don't want to use my hands.
Well, do you have that stick right there?
Yeah.
Yeah, you're standing on one. All right. All right, so in this case, watch though. Yeah, just poke it with a stick and we're getting it loose. Good job soaking it. When'd you do that? Yesterday morning after chores. So like right now you could go soak it. There's something about these greens in Lorraine's garden that we're left I got it. What's happening?
Like this.
See?
No way. What? How is that possible? That's great. Good for you. For 2 and a half. Good morning. Sheep. Sheep. Sheep, Sheep, Sheep, Sheep, Sheep, Sheep, Sheep, sheep, sheep. How's the cow's water? They must have drank a lot of it yesterday. Oh, did you get it open? Okay, that's not a whole lot because we filled that up yesterday, so we need to come like at 1, see if we can't get water in it. Actually, let's— here, you rinse that out. Maybe you and Grace get a couple bucketfuls and get some for the use too, please. There's 2 new watering buckets we got underneath the overhang near the stanchion that you guys could use, and you could grab Henry if you'd like. Well, it's 10 till 8. That's when we're supposed to be milking these cows. We still got to get these chickens over. We had put leaf mulch from here, spread it onto our garden beds. It looked like this before the chickens came. Now it looks like this. We don't want them in there too long, too much longer. Some of it's gotten down in the walkways. We'll, we'll shovel it back, you'll see. And we got to process where we go from here. Chickens and then building these beds nice, rebuilding them again. Chickens did minimal damage.
And silage tarps— wheels were frozen in the ground.
This never This is too amazing. Look at the ice buildup, but it's still running. We need to get the water— overflow water from right here just to right here. I think I'll grab this end because it's gonna be the most trickiest because that's not glued together. Then I'll drag it down and you'll kind of— you'll carry that in. Okay, so it's probably frozen in the ground.
You ready?
1, 2, 3.
Hopefully that doesn't come undone.
Right, there we go.
Oh boy.
Tight at the bottom. Gosh, where's that hammer, Josiah?
Remember I didn't get it?
Can't get into this frozen dirt. We gotta go get a hammer. But first, I thought Jonah was getting the cows in. Jonah, what, what gives? Okay, Jonah's queuing up the cows for milking. Always something with them. All right, set Josiah for the hammer. Is this the red toolbox you looked in? I thought you looked in every drawer around. This would not drive. Everything else they could manage by hand.
There we go.
A little bit of hammer will help us. This side's got our hose weighted down. It's going underneath it. That went brilliantly. That could have went a lot worse. Well, aren't you guys getting old lately? What's your name, Mr. Brown?
Cheese Apple. I don't think I had that snack today.
Mr. Brown, you're not going with us? I'm trying to get things done too. I have a 2 o'clock chiropractor appointment. When that happens, you gotta hustle from the very get-go because I gotta do chores, you gotta eat. I like to get the editing done because by the time we get back, it's shorter. Hey, Mr. Brown, what are you not going with?
I saw it somewhere around here. It was on all night.
And it's working now?
It was on all night, so it just kept going into the creek.
Oh really?
Yeah.
That's why the spigot didn't freeze. I think it fills up. Just drop it over here. Go turn on our— go turn off— turn it off. Okay?
Yeah, okay.
Yeah, that's how. That's why the spigot didn't freeze.
That's cool.
It was left on. Okay, so I need cutting boards.
And then we still filled them up.
We still put them in the truck.
You hauled those buckets for nothing? Oh my gosh, so sorry. I know, I know, I know I've got a milk, but I also got niños to quench. Josiah, where are you? Where are your chickens?
Keep them warm.
Did you feed them? Where'd you feed them at? Okay, they— did they come out? There's feed there still. Okay, all right. I love it when these cows are first in milk. And look at this, just, uh, boom! 2 gallons plus.
Look at it flurrying just like that. Boom!
2 gallons and a quarter strong. That means a little more than that because I filled these up past the mark. It's flurrying just a little bit. That'd be kind of cool for the snow. It would be kind of cooler though if we already had our generator in. Wait a minute, that definitely works better with a camera. Is that you getting the hay out? Hey, well, at least you're not gonna get crushed.
Yeah. I need you, Papa.
You need me?
Ho ho!
Hey, Rebecca.
What?
I say we call the puppy people today. What do you think?
I already emailed them.
What'd they say?
Well, I haven't, I don't know. I don't think I got an email back, but I did want to talk to you about this. There's these sandbags.
Uh-huh.
Because that's on my list today.
So these— The sandbag store. Only the internet. Thesandbagstore.com.
Okay, so these are, they will last longer. They're more durable.
Let's do it.
So the problem is with the ones that you've been getting They only last about 1 year, but these will last 2.
Yeah, let's get it. What are you talking about?
Yeah, I just wanted to make sure.
Yeah.
Is black or white?
No, I prefer the ones that—
green?
Tear and wither and—
Stop.
And then where do we order our sand from?
Just— black's classy.
Okay, I was thinking black too because then that would—
yeah, go and type in sand near me.
Okay, I know where to get it.
Oh, you do? Okay.
I can't remember the name of it. It's where we got the rocks for our walkway.
Yeah. Okay, order a yard of sand.
All right, well, I'm gonna go check out—
I mean, I guess order a minimum amount of sand as they'll let you. Yeah, but let's do it.
These are 100. This is 100 sandbags, and that's how many pounds they can load. It can, it can load 50, but we ain't gonna load them that 50.
No, that's too big of a bag. That's a bag as big as a feed bag, honey. Okay, but I don't have a smaller—
I'm glad you talked to Okay, so it's 14 inches by 26 inches, but you don't have to fill it all the way full, do you?
They don't have a smaller bag?
I don't think in this one. In these ones that aren't Jerry.
All right.
Okay, so let's look, see.
That's fine.
Hold on one second. Let me go. Let's shop now and see if they have.
How expensive are they?
But there, it was $82. For 100.
Gosh, I'm glad you are talking to me.
This is why I'm talking to you, because like, I'm not—
go back to Uline, see what their, their prices are. Okay. Are these not UV treated?
10 by— they are, but they are, um, okay.
See, they're 10 by 14, and how much are they? They're $3. Well, they're only— if you get 2 plus, they're $2.70 versus $8 and something. Yeah, I think we ended up going with the smaller ones. And we're just gonna be better about putting them away, like not leaving them out all year long. Let's call about the puppy. Hey, this is Justin Rhodes, my wife Rebecca Rhodes. We put a deposit in on a puppy and we're just kind of checking to see where everything stands.
Y'all hear that? What?
It's who? Oh, the puppy people. Puppy people? Are you serious? Hey, this is Justin. Basically, she said she's got one. She's got one male. She's trying to get us to come look. It's not a Labradoodle though, but it's a what?
It's a Bernadoodle. Okay, so it's this one right here.
They don't shed, they're family friendly. I guess it doesn't really matter to us. It's this one.
It's this one right here. Is that not cute? So yeah, I mean, I'm willing to, I'm willing to look, but I'm also willing to wait.
Okay.
For a Labradoodle.
Yeah.
If we feel like, but I feel like—
She's gonna call us, we'll get an appointment.
Yeah, she's gonna call us back, we're gonna get an appointment.
Alright. Guys, I'll be there in a second. What do you mean? I ended up going to my appointment, didn't get the edit done in time. Jonah doesn't want me to help him. Hey, why don't you want me to help you? Why do you want me to edit? Because what?
Because you're behind.
Oh, that's very nice of him. Hey, will you let me get the pigs then? So after we build these beds back up after the chickens, we silage tarp. But look, we don't have enough sandbags. That's why we're getting the more— we're getting more sand, Josiah. We have no more of this. I'm gonna put like a sandbag every foot. The chickens finished this in like 2 days. That means they're gonna be done with this in 2 days. So where are they gonna go? Or we got a fun little project for them.
What?
Has something to do with the old pig port. Look, they got lots and lots of food. So some folks wondering, why am I not putting pigs in the pig port? Well, the pig port was just for you guys. It was just to show that you could raise 2 pigs in a carport if that's all you had. Me, I've got other jobs. I got jobs for pigs like gardens, forests. So these guys are at work. And when I did keep them inside on deep bedding, it was just easier just to keep them in our house, right? But not everybody has stalls below their bedroom. Oh, peeing and eating at the same time, that's fun. They're already tilling. Good job. Maybe tomorrow we're moving out.
Okay, look at that.
Let's pour the rest of this water on the ground, softens it up.
I am going to check on the ewes and their minerals and see how that's going. Some basic minerals out here. I'm going to fill up here with the minerals, and I have to fix a mineral thing, a mineral feeder that has come off. The boys reported to me me. I brought the stuff to fix that, and then I'm gonna put a probiotic powder out here for them, free choice. I also added vitamin C, free choice for them to take in, and that's actually completely gone.
How's it going out here? Listen, if you're gonna do this, I don't need you to do it, Jerry. Make sure everybody's got water filled up. Check my— check the used minerals. Did they get hay? All right, they want me to edit, and I think what's really going on is they want Josiah to edit, keep working on their video. I have to get what's on the card on the computer since you have another card of footage you want to add in. Got Rebecca a drill bit she needed. I have your bit for screwing this roofing nail in. How are they?
They're doing so good.
Did they eat a lot of your minerals?
Oh, they did.
Oh, what do you need?
Let's get me the— this.
I'll give you one bullet at a time. So what's it gonna be like when they first have their babies in like a year and a half?
It's gonna be so cute.
It's gonna be excitement on this farm or what? Yeah, that's a long time waiting. We play the patience game, don't we, babe?
Yep, you got to. I'm, I'm realizing I ordered like 8 dozen strawberry plants and 100 asparagus crowns today, and I'm like, this year I might actually get it done.
Hey girl, she's in there with the rest of them eating it up. Look at this. Becky. What?
Belle?
She's behind me.
She's good. She likes the taste.
We should put some salt on our fingers. Rebecca has tamed these sheep so well. Remember, we couldn't even get near them when they first came. You gonna make the old man get under there?
No, you just hand me this.
No, I'm gonna hold it up for you.
No, I can do it.
This thing— I'm right here.
I can do it.
Take the help. You proud woman?
Well, I need screws.
There we go.
You're gonna— you, you added 2 more for RC Gold, which is probiotic.
Nope.
I think she— I think she breathed up her nose.
I think she did. She got in her nose. Here, Floppy.
Floppy. She goes right right back at it. I know.
Floppy, floppy.
This RC Gold. Oh, don't eat my— she'll eat that leather, babe.
I know she will, won't she?
Okay, RC Gold and RC Gold, and then I added vitamin C over there. All right.
