Look What Happened

A homesteader walks through his farm after returning from the Homesteaders of America event, checking on gardens, animals, and recent barn repairs. He milks the cow, moves a shed, and slow-roasts a pork butt while promoting his new streaming platform, Abundance Plus.

Yesterday we got back from Homesteaders of America. We are home. Jonah's working real hard to get it cleaned up. They're out in the road. Uh-oh, Teddy. Teddy's gonna lose it, Becky. He is. He is gonna pee all over this road. Well, hey, there's Sia. Look, look who he's looking for. Wait till he sees Mom. Come here, Mr. Bren. I'll get you. Get away from him. Oh, we're back together. Come here, big guy. Don't be shy. Oh man, the place looks so good. Grandma got this thing fixed, huh? It only took like 1 hour. Okay, Grandma fixed it. Bye-bye. He's falling asleep with you, Grandma. Oh yeah, he's tired. He slept so much though. He did so good. Only 1 stop with Henry. Me. I know, that was crazy. Becca, your garden is jamming. I see that Randolph has done some work. He's gotten the beams in for the overhang there. See the vision? Covered, covered area for our entrance. Let's see what else is going on in the people barn. Oh, the, the balcony! Boom! And after being at that event, I'm just reminded more and more of the importance of just like real life community events, and this is going to help make that happen. Look at this, the staircase is awesome. You're going to hit your head on your head. Okay, I'll be careful. Yeah, this is mostly a kids club up here. Cool view. Yeah, you like it, Beck? Yeah, I like it. I mean, I probably won't come up here very much. No, this might be it for you. I think Grandpa Henry would like this. He'd love this. His vision was an office, but I don't think he had any idea what the future would look like. Yeah, Henry's seeing the pigs. They've done a good till job while we were gone, mixed it up. Now we are back. It is so good to go and meet all you guys, but it is so also so good to be back. Seems to be doing okay. These peppers are maybe a little yellow, has been dry. The tomatoes look good though. Piece of grass looks good coming out of the cracks. I always have no problem growing grass. There you go. Whoa, what happened here? The red cardinal. Looks like maybe the cat got it. I bet this hasn't been moved in a while, huh? Have you guys moved this while I was gone? No. Okay, spreading the holy chicken squat love. This maybe hasn't been cleaned out. Just doing a little bit of touch-ups that might not have happened while I was gone. You guys did a real good job though. While I was gone. I'm hard-pressed to find anything wrong. Back up and turn this way. Okay, now back up. There you go. Come this way and come right through here. Oh boy, don't hit my Suburban. Don't hit my Suburban. I think this is the only section that might have gotten neglected on screen now, so make sure they get watered this morning. So let's make sure they get watered this morning. Yeah, I think the lettuce is gone and the zucchini looks like it needs to be transferred. Look in here. Okay, how's everybody doing? Good, guys. You might have noticed these Cornish Cross are back inside. Oh wow, we definitely have to do that water. Look, that is full of shavings over there on the big birds. If you have to do that every day, you have— it's tough. Time to give them a, a bigger waterer, I think. Okay, there you go. These sea monsters that have survived, they're beasts. I'm telling you, the day I was gonna leave, uh, we went out there and out in the field, 20 of them, probably 20 dead. I'm glad he's practicing on that and not Sally. If you remember, I put those chicks out early, like 2 weeks. So we had some cold rain, and a lot of them, as far as I could tell, didn't get under the meat shaw, and it killed them. You know, I told that story a couple times over the Homesteaders of America weekend just to say, look, do something. Things aren't going to go perfect. You could be doing this for 15 years like I have and stuff— still, stuff like that happens. Some of these, like this one, is doing good. It's all green, but just right over here it's a little yellow. I can also set this up so it doesn't water the road. It stops right here. I've got Josiah to kink the hose. Josiah, do not unkink that hose, okay? All right, I got it. Go ahead and unkink it. I think I got it. Go ahead, unkink it. Okay, now why is it doing a short spray? Oh, there you go. All right, going across there good. I'm gonna hope it stops about right here. We don't need to water the road, but these things are struggling. This is this clay compacted soil. We might as well give them some help with some spray. Okay, that did good. See, that one's doing good. Three little pigs jamming, plenty of water. Steady. We're getting them some grain, probably not enough, but that's because we want them to dig and find the corn in this deep bedding, which they're doing. Better to learn on this than a real car, right? We're so early, we still got an hour to milking time. I'm gonna see if I can't take this rental car back. Josiah wants to go experience a new car. Mr. Mountain, you want to go? All right, well, we're here, but it's closed. There's some people that came and just left their car. You think I can just leave the car? If no returning agent is available, please note them and take keys and contact counter in the main lobby. Okay, well, there's my answer. Okay boys, let's go. Mr. Brown, did you not wear shoes? No. Oh my, and you brought that blanket. What was I thinking? I'm gonna carry across here. No shoes. Oh my gosh, here we go. We returned the car. Now we're gonna wait on Grandma. Is that her already? Wave at her. Grandma, we didn't wait barely any. Thanks for picking us up, Grandma. Sure. We are back. It takes getting away to pick up on little things like the fresh mountain air, the smell here. A little extra patience for stuff like that. Here's Arun, hopefully coming to get us. Let's go, everybody! Hey, what did you do up here with all the quiet? Me not yelling for these kids all the time. I don't know. I was thinking today I came. It is so nice up here. This is that pasture we converted with pigs. Just, it's kind of nice to get away. Although we're far from the farm, we're almost to our furthest spot, but it is just kind of nice to have the change of scenery. Look how good she looks. Her hair is coming off nice. She's full. You're looking good, honey. Flossy is always shedding. Sheds really nice. Looks good. No surprises there. You are looking a little hungry though. That plank right there, turn to their left. You want that to be full, but it is time to move them to new grass. So if you ever see me in the films just start milking, I have already washed her. This didn't show that. We finished milking. I'm just scouting where we're gonna bring this shed. We don't need to hit any stumps. We're good. The sheep are gonna love this. This is full of just more, uh, brambly stuff. There is a stump right there. I just hope it's not high enough. That is right where we need to go. The reason I'm concerned about these stumps is, look, I mean, this happened while I was gone, but it could have very well happened to me. This beam going across catches the stump and it breaks in half. Look at that. They put a support Support brace so we can replace that whole board. It's only got maybe a 4 or 5 inch clearance. Okay, go slow. I'll watch. I'll help y'all watch. Stay as high as you can but still missing that big rock there. Okay, Jonah, you got to go right a little bit more. You're hitting it with the skid. Maybe I should have drove. Yeah, you better. All right, we gotta watch that one next. Oh, it's got right into the roof. Yeah, if we didn't pin it. 1, 2, 3. Okay, is this gonna go through? Oh, it's leaning uphill. It's going. You're fine, Lily. Let's take the milk back before it gets too warm. Yeah. Jonah and Arun putting up nets. Gideon, thank you. This thing is coming in handy. So you want to kind of spot it there. Look who's here. Hey there. Hey, working man. I'm back for more. You got it looking good in there. Yeah, I think it'll work. Oh yeah. All right, what are you gonna do today? I got the rig to try to do the flags. Oh good. What'd you get for soundboard? This. Oh nice, this is fiberglass. Yeah, that's suspended ceiling. Okay, I was gonna make a frame out of this. This stuff is made to hold that stuff. Oh, that's nice. Randolph's gonna hang the— suspend the flags above these supports and attach to the rafters. But in between the rafters, he's gonna put these sound boards because the sound apparently is bouncing off the concrete, bouncing off the roof, and those sound boards to help a little bit. Oh, he's got his coffee. We got you, uh, we got you a couple flags here, a North Carolina flag and an American flag. Those will cover it up. Oh, is this the 10? Yeah, cool. And then we've got all the furniture. Hey Gideon, are these boots going to the trash? This is what happens to your boots, bro. Go put these up. And if you're gonna be out here without shoes on, look, look, take your socks off. That peeve. Oh my word, Grandma, she not only watched our children, she cleaned up the loft. Oh my goodness. On today's episode of Burn It Up Cooking Show, slow oven roasted Boston butt. I wish we could have done a brine. I forgot, I forgot last night. I did drive all day, so I'll give myself a break. Mr. Google Pants didn't say— I'm gonna get it up in the air. I don't know if this is a good idea or not. I feel like maybe airflow get in there, uh, crisp the other side. And then I had some blood and I put some water in it, and maybe we'll put a little bit more water in it. And it'll just keep it moist. Well, there the butt sits on the floor. I set it up on the counter to get more water, got distracted. There it sits on the floor, blood water all over the place. That's why we call it the Burn It Up Cooking Show. One, because I don't really know what I'm doing, but two, things happen. Meat falls on the floor. The TV shows do not show that. Why? Why? Makes us all feel inadequate when it does happen. And that's the obstacle. That's the obstacle in the story. Every story needs a good obstacle, and then it makes the meal that much more rewarding, right? Did I just put way too much salt on this? I've got a goal: fall-off-the-bone delicious moist pork butt, uh, and that's what I want. Things that get in the way, and those are going to be kind of what make it interesting, and definitely more rewarding at the end. Thanks for the pig bucket, bro. Okay, so we're gonna keep it in there on 225 until what the barbecue guys call bark. I act like I know what I'm doing here, but I actually just talked to Mr. Google Pants before I came. So crispy skin or internal temperature of about 160, 170. I like that better because that's like— does the thermometer say 160 or 70, or does it not? I don't know what bark's supposed to look like, so we'll go with that. I'm gonna break my leg so I don't have to go to the dentist. Ah, Josiah's got a cavity to be filled today. I gotta take him mid-afternoon. I'm gonna try to get some work done now, office work, because I won't have office work this afternoon. Hey, little baby, you got your rooster outfit on! You got your rooster outfit! You're getting to be so fun, so smiley and awake and happy. And look, look, Mom. He even lets me hug him. He even lets me hug him without crying. Look, he didn't cry. He didn't cry. You didn't cry. It's been about 4 hours. Been working hard in the office. Kind of boring computer work. Uh, let's test this. 142. Looks like I should have put that butt in a lot earlier. We're not gonna even— we'll be lucky if we get to the 160 mark. Which is enough to eat but not enough to be as delicious as it could have been. Randolph has called me over for an inspection. Why is my hat on backwards? Oh, he's got the COVID over! Looks good. Oh, that's nice. That's cool. Is that how you wanted it? Oh my word. That looks so cool, doesn't it? Nice. Because most people will probably be in this middle area. Yeah, I wonder if we should flip it. Yeah, turn it, spin it. Yeah, spin it. You was thinking that? Yeah, we have those speakers down there and we have those speakers there. You've got it in the center of these two beams, so that might be good. Yeah, because I think it'd be— it'd look weird if it came over more, wouldn't it? Yeah, I think you actually have it the right place. I think it just needs to spin. What do you think? All right, I agree, because right there maybe it looks upside down. Yeah, since it's kind of tilted, it does though. Yeah, it'll be upside down if somebody's standing over here if you turn it, but I think most of the time the first place people are going to see is when they come in, so it'd be good to flip it. Yeah. Randolph, how did you hang that by yourself? I like it. In other words, gird up. He girded up his loins. Yep. Yeah, a little baby Henry in the swing. A little bit. I love your outfit. I love the outfit. So what's been going on in here while Randolph has been doing that? Mucho. I know I'm too serious. I actually dread when they grow up and the wonder is gone. I need the kids to bring that into me. I'll take a moment and go into their world because there's so much in mine. And for a moment, slight moment, You are lost in their wonderland. Oh man, I'm excited about this one. This one is like no other. If you guys like hard work, which I know you do, and if you like chitlers, which I know you do, you're gonna love this one. Can't wait to take you to the Homestead Wonderland. That's coming out. Well, that's to members now, so if you're a member, go check it out. If you're not a member, I'll leave a link for that down in the description. Does Mama got you over here now? Did she got you over here? And he's so different, Becky. And he's, he's got a lot of drool now. Does that mean you're getting teeth? Mom's looking, she's looking close. Teethies. Did I just say teethies? The things we say when there's a little baby. What are you saying? Are you talking to the camera already? Rooted 4 is gonna be in Abundance Plus. It's kind of a tricky thing. Like, Abundance Plus is coming, the app is coming in August, and you'll be able to watch our show Rooted on all the things in Abundance Plus. Right now it's in our member area, Abundant Permaculture. But a little heads up, Abundant Permaculture, the member area, is gonna become Abundance Plus. Okay, so you'll be able to watch all the things on all the things. Let's check this pork. Why am I checking it? Well, I guess I hope it's enough or I'm gonna have to speed up this cook. We got 152. I don't know if there's anything I can do about that. At 15 till. It actually probably needs to be turned off. I hope the beans warmed up. We got some beans cooked that I'm just heating up. Crap, they're at like 90. That's not gonna do it. We're gonna have to heat these things up in a pan. The other good news about Abundance Plus today is I went ahead and gave a go-ahead for another film production company for another story on another family. I don't feel like it's solid enough yet to give any more details than that, but just letting you know we're working on getting that ball rolling. It's not just going to be our shows, it's going to be other, other shows. When I talked about Abundance Plus at the— I gave out stickers and I mentioned it and talked that we're gonna have our own streaming platform, our own app. People clapped, people clapped. I was shocked. You guys are terribly excited, and that makes me excited. Some of you guys were saying, you know, you can watch this stuff on YouTube, which we're gonna put our vlogs also on Abundance Plus. It's not like just for homesteading, right? So you could put your kids on it, but then they could get distracted and watch something else. God forbid something else you don't want them to see. But everything else on Abundance Plus is going to be safe. That's some of the things they were saying. And there'll be no ads, there'll be downloading, there'll be more interaction in the comments. So I feel in my heart it's like legitifying homesteading. Like homesteading is getting its own Discovery Plus, on its own Disney Plus, so to speak. We're gonna have Abundance Plus, and it's gonna be like a one-stop shop for quality entertainment, inspiration, and even education. It helps if I turn this on, doesn't it? All right, what do you guys think? Think it turned out? I think it was just at the point where we could have— if we would have gotten there, we would have tin— we would put parchment paper and then tin foil. But it looks good. It's, it's not as tender as I would like, that's for sure, but it'll do.
