Mastitis Prevention for a New Milk Cow (Delicious)

A farmer milks Flossie and explains why skipping milking risks mastitis, a painful udder infection. They're using calf sharing to eventually take days off, and they feed the skim milk to chickens and pigs. The converted school bus Maple is being prepped for a potential buyer.

Somebody's coming back to look at Maple, our converted school bus. That's really good news. We're gonna take them on a drive, so I want to make sure she's really nice and warmed up. So let's start her now. As much as I hate to, we're selling Maple. Because we're like Johnny Cash, we've been everywhere. We're good. She did her job for us. Time for a job, an adventure for somebody else. Where do I get the hair gray? Put that in there. We have a new calf on farm, 2 weeks old tomorrow. We calf share, which means the calf is still on the mama, which means once a week we can take a day off. We can't quite yet. Because the mama is actually producing more milk than the calf, so we got to keep up with that. Eventually the calf will be drinking it all and we can take a day off. We can leave the calf on the mama and take the day completely off. But yesterday we didn't put them up, so we took it easy. We don't have Phyllis to milk, so all we got to do is bring in Flossie and get any excess stuff. Hang on, hang on, hang on. Oh, she's getting in the— hey, we got Flossy in, no problem. Check out these udders, they look, they look very full. The danger is she could get mastitis. We didn't milk her out. And also, if the demand for milk's not there, she will produce less milk over the long run. We want to keep her producing. Good. All right, I'm gonna call it at that. Gosh, come on! I'm glad Glad we milked this morning. It's like a gallon and a quarter, a gallon and a half, almost a gallon and a half. Rebecca, I say we keep the calf on her like 24/7 until— it's not like we need 2 gallons from her every morning. We don't, not until Phyllis— yeah, is going down. And then— yeah, and until the calf catches up to us and we're not getting anything from Flossie. Yeah, guys, we have 2 full buckets of skim now, so give 2 scoops. 1 scoop to the chickens and 2 scoops in each pig bucket. We added a little bit of water. We want it to— we want it to look like this. Since we're putting skim in there, we don't want to lose any of it. So we want it to, by the time it's time to feed, to have soaked up all the liquid. Papa, we could stop feeding the cats and they would just have their own food. Okay, we've done our chores, we've warmed up the bus. We've eaten breakfast. 2 years ago today we left for the very first time. In our bus, we're actually gonna take it on a drive right now. Just to make sure everything's flowing good. Everything's working good. Get it real good and warmed up for the folks coming later. So how was it, kids? Just like old times? Just like old times. Are y'all gonna be sad if we sell her? Yeah. Yeah. No. Yeah. Okay, me too. It's been 2 days since we hit publish on the Great American Farm Tour on Amazon. It's only supposed to take 2 to 4 days, so let's see if it's up. I've got my blue light off, that's why it looks so orange right now. It's night. We need to refresh this. Ah, still waiting. Maybe tomorrow. But actually tomorrow, I don't think I'll mention this, maybe it'll be the next day. Tomorrow, gun safety. Gun safety. One of you guys have reached out, you are NRA certified gun safety instructor. We're gonna make a special video about that for the vlog. That should be good. Stay tuned for that tomorrow.
