Mobile Chicken Coop (ChickShaw 2.0) Building Begins

In this family farm vlog, Papa (Victor Justin Rhodes) and his children spend a day managing their chickens, troubleshooting an electric fence, and kicking off the construction of a redesigned mobile chicken coop called ChickShaw 2.0. The episode opens with checking on a broody hen named Lily and ensuring chicks are safely contained. The family discovers that the fence is intermittently off, allowing chicks to escape, prompting a hands‑on inspection. After confirming the fence’s operation, they discuss the upcoming ChickShaw 2.0 project, highlighting planned improvements such as larger tires, a stronger frame, and simplified construction, with the intention to share the plans publicly. The vlog also touches on their documentary “The Great American Farm Tour,” detailing a recent rejection from Netflix for lack of controversy and the consideration of Amazon Prime as an alternative distribution channel. Throughout the day, Papa teaches a work ethic by paying the kids for chores, takes them to a metal yard to recycle scrap metal for cash, and runs errands at a hardware store to gather specific parts (hinges, latches, carabiners, screws, washers, lumber, cedar, plywood). The narrative blends practical farm management, family bonding, and entrepreneurial planning, ending with the family loading supplies and heading home.

Hey, good morning. Good morning. Good morning. You think she's gonna get your apple? Come on now, don't change your mind. Let's go. Come on. What's that?
Feed.
For who?
The chickens.
Oh, you cleaned all that feed up? You're gonna take it to Josiah's? Okay, thanks. Did you leave those chickens some feed in there?
Yeah, I left some feed on the ground.
Come here, let's look at it. Okay, good Goodness, Lily, she's out! Do you know this?
That is too easy.
All right, let's get down. Let's test her and see if she's still broody. Hey, hey, she didn't puff up!
Look at that!
I'm gonna give it one more day though, just to be sure, because she's stubborn. Lily, get some of that feed and let's put it back in your cage.
Hey, Papa! Hey, Papa, you want to see the left of the turkey bump?
Lily, did you put some feed in that?
Yeah.
Okay, good. And hold on, let's sweep dump it out a little bit better. Here we go, Millie. Hey, where'd you do with all the other feed that was in this? I'm afraid she just dumped it out. That's not dumping out, that's a spillage. Thank you. Hey, Mr. Brown, let's go see if these chicks are staying in this fence. And they're all over the place. We're training out here because I don't want to train next to Mama's garden. There's a big chick though. There's 2 more big chicks. They would be ravaging our gardens, so it's better they get out here than up there. Is that fence even on? The fence is on. Just had to turn it off for a second. It's leaning right here, but that's not— it's not making it touch. Like I said, that doesn't help that much. How are they getting out? Turn it back on. Just— yeah, it's off. Get Jonah inside and then we're going to turn it back on. And we're gonna see how these guys are getting through despite it being on. How they getting through? Go in and we'll see. Here, I'll hand that to you. Turn it back on, Josiah. Let's see how they're getting in.
Get in! They're getting zapped, or they're jumping into the sky and using the wire. They're so desperate.
All right, they're not getting in. They're They're not wanting to press through. Was it off this morning, Jonah?
Nope.
Turn it off and we'll catch them.
That's what I want to do.
Oh wow, good idea. That beats my idea. You think they got under?
No, they're hopping. So it's on, right? And they're hopping into— you told me if they're in the sky, they can go through the bigger cracks.
Oh, are they just jumping right through?
They're just jumping right through and not getting zapped.
Have you seen that?
Yeah, I seen that when they were coming in when it was on.
Okay.
And, um, they were using these wires to push themselves forward.
Birds. So they were in the air so they didn't get zapped.
See, like that bird is on a power line and it's not getting zapped, so it's in the air.
There's 2, 2 left. Okay, here, I'll hold this up and you go around, go around them. Go way up, go way up, and then come down. There you go. Now come over at them.
There you go.
Oh my God! Is this where you like to go for the milking, Almanzo? Way up there? You taking a bath way up there? You gonna bring Bear out? He's almost as tall as you, dude. You gonna let me put the head gate up, Almanzo?
Oh my.
Those cats!
Oh no, oh no.
It's fine, Bobby, he's gone up. He's gone up.
Look what I've got here. The Chickshaw is coming back. You excited about that, Becky?
Yeah.
And we got some changes. We got some exciting changes to improve it a little bit. It's going to be even more simple, I would say. Bigger tires, stronger structure, easier to build. We're going to make the plans available, all that. So Chickshaw 2.0, here we come. We got to get Uh, you're— we got to get the big— the chickens that are in the A-frame need to go in the Chickshaw. We need to put your big chicks in with the chickens that are in the A-frame. We need to get the A-frame to the guineas.
What?
You are making a lot of noise. I know, I know you know. What? We're splitting the big chicks that are out in the field between the kitchen garden and the A-frame chicken crop garden chickens. Later for the— we'll leave the ICs where they are And then later we're gonna make them a mini Chickshaw. A Chickshaw mini-me. In other news, Netflix. Y'all know we're trying to get our documentary, The Great American Farm Tour, on Netflix so that we can expose it to people who maybe aren't growing food. Like reach a bigger audience. Well, we heard back from them. They said, and I quote, "It's too small." And I pressed our distributor on that and I said, "Is that because we're an independent film? The production quality?" And he was like, "Yeah." He said that Netflix is afraid they won't get views on it. And I said, "Well, wait." we'll push it, we'll push it to our audience, this is blah blah blah. And he said no, they're looking for, what'd they say?
Controversy.
Controversy!
So we're not looking for controversy. We're looking for inspiring people to grow their food.
So, we don't want to be on Netflix. So we're heartbroken that we can't get on Netflix, but I don't know if that's where we want to be anyway.
I know, yeah.
So we're gonna look into Amazon Prime. I think they are open to anybody. And uh, Yeah, we'll see. We don't know for sure, but yeah, we know we still have it. It's through our platforms. We have it for sale. Uh, we'll see. Yeah, I'm talking to him about Amazon, what it does, and like if we get a lot of views on it in Amazon, does that mean it gets him recommended? Because that's what we want. We want to reach people we don't already have. Like, if— what is the deal, buddy? What are you so excited about?
He's just a chatterbox.
We had to get— we had to replace our stand. Our stand broke for my camera.
I just want to say, isn't he awesome? Look at this haircut.
I was wondering if you're gonna say something about that.
Everybody got a haircut. Well, except for, uh, Lily.
And was you meant— were you meaning to shave his head?
No, I had a— there was a, there was a turn of the head and a snip of the scissors that went the wrong way.
But I like it.
You don't want it to be It needs to be cut. We'll grow it out again. You look so cute though. You're so stinking cute.
We got to go to the hardware store, get parts for this. They want to go to Tractor Supply. You guys been working hard? You want to buy a toy? It's your money. You've earned $5 and get Josiah some supplies for making chores easier.
No, the toy doesn't have to be food grade. Yes, you have $5.
Ah, a food grade bucket for helping with your chores. And we're going to take The metal. We have some scrap metal. We're gonna borrow my dad's truck and take the metal to the metal yard. Mom, see ya.
Ooh! Gideon!
Gideon, we're at the metal yard, dude. You're gonna see the big tractors.
Yeah, Gideon, you want to see the big trucks and see all the metal?
I've got really good memories going to the metal yard. It was an event growing up. Our dad would take us here. He used to pay us a little bit from it, and then he would go get us a treat afterwards. I'm gonna do the same for you boys. So we take this metal that we no longer need and they recycle it and give us money for it. Look at the tractors, guys! Big tractors.
I'm attracted. I'm attracted to tractors. I know.
Usually the big tractors are moving this stuff about and it's exciting, but doesn't look like it's happening right now.
No.
But that's what they make out of all the metal?
Yeah, they, I guess they melt it and and make other metal stuff out of it. Y'all gonna help me? Yep. The tractor's loading right now, guys. Let's go see it. How much do you think we'll get? I say $80.
$80, $90.
What do you say, Josiah?
Uh, I don't know.
Only one way to find out. Let's go.
Hey Papa, come on.
Well, not nearly as much as I thought.
$41. I give you $20, you $20, and you get a dollar. Y'all happy?
Yeah.
Hard-working boys. While we were there, when we were unloading, a gentleman came up to me and said, how do you get those boys to work so hard? It's real easy. I pay them. This is the harder part. I let them buy stuff with their money. It's not always what I would choose for them, but if it excites them, gets them excited about work— it's why I have such a work ethic. My dad worked us paid us. The lesson in life here is you want something, you got to work for it. We dressed up for town.
That was a good snap.
Here we are. Did you pick out something, Mr. B?
Yeah.
Okay, that's pretty good. Did you pick out something?
No, Brian needs to go to the bathroom.
All right, you guys got it?
Where's my money?
Let's go. I'll have your money. I have it.
But I want to buy a dinosaur with it.
No, you're already maxing out your budget, dude. You put those back and get a dinosaur or get the tractors. It's up to you. You'd rather have a dinosaur?
Yeah.
Okay.
I'll put this.
Okay, you ready, Josiah?
Yeah, walk. No, Nate, show where we're going.
Guys, we're at Mountain Juicery. You ready to go?
Yeah.
Let's go get our smoothies. We got our organic smoothies. And I got the kids some granola. It's because you guys worked so hard, fellas. It's a celebration of hard work. Here's your thing, Christopher. Do you like your smoothies?
Yeah.
I'll taste that, Mommy.
You like it? I guess that means yes. At the hardware store now. For our list, our supply list. Oh, it's not too bad, page and three-quarter. Let's do it. Uh-oh, they are completely out 3.5-inch door hinges. I'm thinking 4 is too big, and 3, that might do it. A couple of safety halves, and I didn't have this on the list, but we need this for our door. Barrel latch. I didn't have these on the list either, but need to add them. These are hardware carabiners for the roof pass. I'm also getting some thicker screws, and by the way, I'm gonna be updating this with the new and improved stuff. So let's see if that's gonna work. You know what? That's really not a problem. That's gonna work. I'm most excited about this. We're gonna do an axle similar to what we did with the meat shawl. So much easier. For our wheel. You got something?
I found these. They're not bendable. Look.
Okay, are they at least 2 feet long?
At least.
Yeah, make sure. Do they fit in this? And do they fit snug?
They fit snug.
Look at our monster tire. Wow, that does fit really snug.
Let me just put the other one without the stick.
Okay, put it through. Okay, hold on. Here, Josiah, will you hold the camera for a second?
Holding it.
It's gonna come through a washer, a clamp, and then this has got to be 2 feet. Can you get our measuring tape?
Great timing.
So far—
It's not gonna go 2 feet. I realize with that, I think that we can put— we didn't have 2x4s underneath because we didn't— we put— built an axle out the outside. Side of the frame. So with this, we could just put a supporting 2x4 wherever we need to according to this. Yeah, so grab 2 of those. Let's get us a washer. This is too small. We don't need a bolt, we just need a couple of washers. See if that'll fit on there.
No.
Come here, guys, I found them. Hold on, hold on. Nope, but there's a bigger one. Wow, it really jumped. The 1-inch works. The 3/4-inch works, but they only have 2.
Found it!
I can't remember where I got it.
It's perfect.
Here it is. And it's got the huge bolt too.
Well, we don't need the bolt.
It's better than a fence clamp. You know, it's a bolt, it's better.
That's interesting.
What's interesting?
Better than a plastic spacer. I'm wondering if we can use a flat washer Definitely bolts for spacers instead of the plastic thing. Here, bring that here. And then I wonder if we could use a lock washer to secure the wheel.
And you'll need a new adjustable wrench for this, and I know exactly where the one is.
I have an adjustable wrench. Here, hold that up. This side will have a washer.
Hey, that's the wrong bolt.
And then this will have a lock— where's the lock washer? I don't see why that wouldn't work. It's 6:35. We've been here an hour and a half. That was my goal. We haven't even gotten wood yet. We're looking for chain link fence railing. That's for our handle. Is that it way up there? Here it is. But for us, I think we use this one. That's stout, but it's 10 feet long. There's a shorter one, but it's It's too thick. Is that a thinner, shorter one?
No, still too thick.
Is this a shorter, thinner one?
No.
Why are all the short ones thick? I guess they're posts and this is the top link. All right, grab that. Can you?
What? You think?
Well, it's long. Can you be careful?
Yeah, I can be careful.
Okay. Poultry wire. Rebecca said she had some, but I'm gonna get some just in case. We're not running back to Lowe's. Josiah, can you carry this? It's heavy, needs a strong man. We have fat— these are our pins to go through to hold the handles on. And what do we have? We need our, uh, supports for our frame constructions. I think maybe this will do. That might be a little heavy duty.
No, we should have this, Papa. Better be safe than sorry.
How about Maybe 4 of those and the rest in this.
Bye, baby!
Not quite yet. We haven't even gotten lumber yet. Hopefully we're done with hardware. We're almost done. We're almost done.
Bolts to tightening it up. I don't think your adjustable wrench will go big enough.
I think mine will go big enough.
Woo!
7 o'clock. Gonna go get cedar now. Cedar and then roofing and we're done. Here it is. Ah, you can just smell it. Oh boy. These are our choices.
How many do we need?
20. I don't think there's 20 there. Well, what are these? What are these? These look a little bit better.
That's cedar.
Between that and that, we're gonna get 20. Try to get the straightest ones you can. That's good, that's 20 of those. What else do we need?
I don't know.
Wait, it's going quick now that we're on wood. 2 1x4x8s. These them? I don't think so. 1x6. I don't see any 1x4s. It says 1x4 cedar or untreated. I bet that's because it can be untreated because it's inside. It's inside the coop. There's some untreated. We're just gonna have to go with that. Time for our roofing, fellas. How much of that? 7?
I can't get this off.
Why do we have to get 7? I guess it's siding too.
Yes.
All right, let's grab some of this. Yeah, I'll get it all. Got it all.
You ready to go, Mr. Brown? Okay, let's get our— we need to get a just a 2x2 piece of plywood. And we're done. I know they sell it in smaller pieces somewhere. Yep, here we go. Get it out, buddy. That is a— okay, you ready, Mr. Brown?
Yeah.
Okay, he's ready. Let's go. You're good right there. You pushing it or let me push it?
Pull it. It's easier for us because then we can stop easier.
All right, let's go home.
Mm-hmm.
