Mobile Sheep Pen Gets Even Easier To Move

The host and friends upgrade a mobile sheep pen by adding wheels and hooks for easier moving, while Ben does welding work. They also feed the herd and prepare a Southern meal with ribs, grits, and fried green tomatoes for California guests.

We've hooked up the trailer to the Suburban. We're gonna put the Luchadors in this. It's a hot one, everybody's underneath. I've hired my friend Ben, Holler Homestead, to come. We're gonna make some additions to this Luchador wrestling ring. Namely, we bottom out sometimes in moving it, and then it's difficult. So we're gonna actually put wheels on the middle. So we're adding 4 more wheels. This thing's gonna have 8 wheels. And because we like pulling it, we're gonna have him install O's— O-hook or something or another— to hook up a carabiner or 2 to pull this thing by the frame. You guys can't be here during the weld job. You'll look at it. You won't look away. They won't look away, will they, Jonah?
And they'll get blind.
We don't want you to go blind, so we're gonna catch you, put you in the trailer We're gonna have to use the trailer for tomorrow, going to help Art and Bree with picking up a bull. So let's just do like that. You've got deep bedding in here. Is that one bag?
Yeah.
Okay, we'll put them in there. We'll put them— we'll get them some water, we'll get them some hay, and they'll just hang out in here until Ben's done. I won't get the big ones so skittish. This is crazy. He is crazy. He's just running into this cage.
Oh my word. Should we wait for Ben?
Come on, Jonas.
No, he can't. Got it. Good job. Thanks.
Ready?
Yeah.
Okay, grab the camera. All right, shut the door on me. Nacho should be a lot calmer, easier to catch. Get wide.
Puppy, you keep letting him pass yourself.
Okay, well, the luchadors are happy. They were eating till I opened this door. Hey, water, be happy. Inside, the ladies are getting ready. We're gonna have a Southern party. Yeah, two Southern girls hosting a Southern party.
Yep.
What's the strawberries for though?
We are making strawberry cheesecake frozen yogurt and blueberry frozen yogurt because in the South you can't just have one dessert. Yeah, and even though somebody is bringing a dessert The host still has to provide dessert too.
That's the South, because that's the South. Or we have sweet tea too then. Sweet tea. Okay.
All right, I made myself some herbal sweet tea because that—
yeah, and it's sweetened with honey.
Yeah, I can't have the caffeine of the others, so I'm gonna— I did myself an herbal tea.
Yep.
Which of course I will let other people have if they would like.
That's right.
You're like, that's what the southern host does, they just provide so much.
That's right.
So then we'll have to figure out something that we can give our guests, guests much money we eat. Maybe we'll give them a pumpkin.
What provoked this is— yeah, give them one of our, uh, give them one of our candy roasters. So what provoked this is our California friends who have never had good grits. So I think the Hollers have, or fried green tomatoes. We couldn't get fried green tomatoes this time of year though.
No, we did.
Oh, you got green tomatoes? Oh my gosh, we're gonna have fried green tomatoes, ribs. One other thing, biscuits. We gotta have biscuits. Now we are gluten-free. The Contreras's are gluten-free. So we're gonna do, I guess we're doing, are we doing Donnell's from Weed 'Em Reap biscuits?
No, they're not her biscuits. She just served them to us.
She got us that recipe and they're amazing. They're like, they're like real flour biscuits. They're so amazing. They're really good.
Now, I hope that they're as good as when she made them for us.
Right, because this is our first time making them, isn't it?
No, I think we've made them. We just, it is I don't know. I'm just nervous. It's gluten-free. But gluten-free flour.
What's a southern meal without biscuits though?
Right.
Yeah!
Rebecca going over the vlog. The hollers are here. You saw Meg there. Ben's out. He's working on the wrestling ring. Now we're gonna go check up on him. Check and see what the sheep did. If they ate the persimmon tree or not. There's so much going on today. I had to document it. Normally we don't do a weekend video, but I'm gonna try this. I'm gonna try something a little bit easier format. I call it the Instagram story style format. Just simple shots, not setting up the camera, not putting on music, simple edits. I try to tell people this is a way to do it if you're just wanting to get started and maybe you don't have a lot of time. Well, get you guys a bonus video this weekend, Instagram story style. Look at this. We actually— the boys actually moved this net away around from the persimmon tree because they did eat it. They went to town on it. But anyway, it reveals the fruit, and I still stand by my word. I like lamb more than I like persimmon, so I'm happy that they are eating that and giving me lamb. But I think it's actually going to be okay. It needs to be trimmed back pruned anyway. So yes, now we know, lambs crush persimmon trees. Ben, how's it going, buddy?
Hot and sweaty, getting her done.
Hot, isn't it? It's normally not this hot in September. Sorry, dude, it's probably hotter where you are, about 5 degrees. That's not bad. Oh dude, you've— I just realized you've got— you got all four corners in already.
Yeah, it's still Stiffened it up a little bit. I think to really stiffen it up, we'd have to go across the middle.
Oh, and you put a middle? Yeah, we got one. Is that because we're, we're adding a wheel? Yeah, you had to do that. I'll add some strength too. I mean, it was okay, I think. So this is just—
if I were to just try to weld a wheel to this, it would bend so bad.
Thank you, thank you for thinking about that. I would have never thought about it. So you're basically going to do this contraption? Yeah, 4 more places.
Yep.
Man, that's going to make a difference.
I hope it's not too much. Now I'm worried about adding too much weight to it.
Hmm.
But having that many wheels, there's always going to be so many points of contact. Yeah, thing will just crawl over everything.
I think so. All right, good deal. Anything for me?
No, I'll be in for water here in a minute.
Okay. Oh my gosh, Jonah, what a collection! I love it. What a— what an investment for you, buddy. Yep, my builder. All right, while Ben's working out there, I'm gonna work in here, continue on our minerals. We've got the minerals attached, we've got them labeled. We've got the mineral bins attached, we've got them labeled. We're gonna have one extra there that we need to install. And I got the mat. I got the mat from Free Choice Enterprises. Finally found a source where others could buy this mat, and it's $6 a foot. I will need to cut it so we have flaps here, and then we should be able to get it out there. This morning we engraved the labels with a Dremel. Just now I put on— I took a white Sharpie marker and went over it, so hopefully it'll sink in down where we Dremeled and the sheep can't rub it off. Supposed to be a super permanent marker, so hopefully they can't rub it off. Oh no, it's a Mean Streak marker. My marking line got all tangled up in there. Look at that. Gotta get that straightened out. You know what? Look at that. My time is more valuable than this. I gotta find a different way. I've been working on this 10-15 minutes and I'm not getting anywhere. I use this plywood to mark a line with our mean marker, and now I'm going to use this piece of plywood to to put it under there so I can make my cut, cut through the rubber and not cut into the concrete. I got one cut. I'll put it by the door because it gets rubbery, smelly. Shouldn't be breathing this, so I'm gonna let that air out some. Still a little bit of residue in here. Gonna have to take a break to come back down and try it later. Fried green tomatoes on the way.
We got grits.
Is that what the cheese is for?
Oh yeah.
Have you ever had creamy dreamy grits, California? I have had creamy grits, not with cheese. Oh boy, you haven't lived yet.
No, she hasn't lived.
Ben, have you ever had creamy dreamy grits? Um, no. Fried green tomatoes? Yes, it's one of my favorite things. Honey sweetened tea? Cold?
Yeah.
Can.
I know, it's all right.
It's supposed to be new for you.
I come from a long line of Okies.
Like, oh, okay, what is Okie?
You said that earlier.
Uh, Okies are people from like Oklahoma.
Yeah, okay. Oh, my family's from Louisiana.
Yeah, part hippie, a little redneck.
All right, that's where the sheep were. Mom's ewes. We're gonna move them right over there. We've got 15 minutes till I need to barbecue the ribs. I think we can do it, Jonah. Hmm, I bet I can certainly do it if he's here to help me, but he's not. Y'all are in there anyway, so I'm gonna shut y'all in and move this net. Well, they like the hay I gave them. Okay, you guys can be free. Let's check on the luchadors. Como están? Here, apples. Get you some apples. We're gonna get you out real soon. Got you some hay in your water, I see. Let's get that out. All right, I just fed the sea monsters. Yeah, soaked feed. Look how much is wasted because they trample it. I'm either gonna have to do that in troughs, which is just the added measure because you can't do metal troughs because then it rusts, so I'd have to build wooden ones, or just do dry feed. So I vote we gotta do something with a skim. I vote putting it on the pasture. Ben got one wheel on there. Uh, 4. 1 of 4. Yep.
I'm not, uh, in that mad rush that I was last time.
I know, right? I mean, technically you could walk away right now, still use it functional. Yeah, so it's no emergency. Hey Jason, hello! Have you ever had grits? I have not. Yes. Have you had fried green tomatoes? No. Yes. You ever had honey sweetened sweet tea cold? Uh, I think I might have had that here. I think it was here. Okay, all right, good, good. We're gonna get you a good southern meal tonight.
I think you guys were the ones who gave me honey sweetened tea.
Okay, good.
That's where I had it.
You've had, uh, pig fat cooked collards. Okay, and I think that's it for all the southern intro. Well, we're having ribs, but I'm sure you've had that. Yeah. All right, we're in for it. I gotta go barbecue them. Oh my word, homegrown barbecue ribs!
Oh my gosh, Becky, they're like flaky and like— look at this, look at that!
This turned out all right. I know. Are you actually gonna eat one? You're gonna cook? It's okay, I'll eat it.
Meg's gonna eat mine. No, I'm not gonna eat— I decided I'm not gonna eat any of the corn or anything like that.
Cut. No, but you can get off the gaps diet.
No, I'm gonna stick with it, but all the kids and you can partake in the joy.
Biscuits!
Do you see how good they turned out, Lily? I think so.
Lorraine, have you had fried green tomatoes? I've never had fried green tomatoes.
Grits?
No. Yay. I'm sure you've had biscuits.
Yes, but I'm very excited to try all this.
I got it done.
What, how is it?
Mmm, so good.
Do you like those grits? Jason's almost done. I do, I do. Okay, the green tomato—
oh, I haven't tried it.
Never had that. It's the fried green tomato. Good. I didn't realize I would, I would like them. Okay, good. Yep. You like it, Ben?
I approve of everything.
Okay, good. Now we know you weren't just being nice. You're getting seconds. I'm getting second grits. You're getting seconds on grits. Grandma's Good to have you back.
Thank you.
Uh, always getting seconds on the collards. Collards and grits. Yeah, man. And I guess, would you get seconds on— yes, I would— on fried green tomatoes? You were looking for those? Well, that's one thing I guess we could do with the skim. You like that, Royal? The cream separated today.
We gotta—
we gotta— yeah, next year we're doing 2 pigs at a time, keeping pigs. Basically almost all year. Ben is done with the wheels. He's now putting hooks on for the shade cloth, and we put hooks on all four sides, took our carabiner pool rope to Let's see if the 4-wheel— 4 more wheels helped us. Let's get them all going in the right direction.
Oh, look at this!
One hand, so easy.
Look at that!
Get off of it, Jonah! It's a sheep tractor.
See that?
Look at that wheel off the ground. We'd so be bottoming out right now. Making it so much easier, man. Ben, we wouldn't have been able to pull through here four wheels.
So it is better.
Oh, so much better. Look how uneven it is. Yeah, this wheel's in the air 2 inches. Wow. Oh cool, and it's almost humped. It's almost bottomed out right there. So no, that would have been very hard. Good. Thanks. Good job. Thank you. Get a good welcome. Cool. Uh, Jason, come with us. Keep that rolling if you don't mind. We'll get the, uh, sheet out. Ben, you want to spot this door?
Yeah. Yeah.
Uh, come on in then, Jason, cuz I'm going to shut this door. All right, open the big guy since he's the most antsiest.
It gives off a vibe.
All right, ready? Wait, not yet. Okay, wait, wait, wait, because this little one's trying to get out.
What? What?
Not yet, not yet. Wait, just— yeah, just hold him, Jason. Actually, let's give Jonah the camera and then you can hold him. You can kill it. Good, thank you.
All right, use your back legs. All right, ready?
Thank you, Jonah. Okay guys, you'll have to do that again. Probably want to move you out till December 10th. They'll go in with the ladies.
