Mom finds her place (after 39 years)

The video documents a family’s day on their homestead as they celebrate Mom’s 39th birthday. The segment opens with a detailed check‑up on their sheep Violet, noting panting, coat condition, and a plan to improve her health through shade, copper‑rich minerals, alfalfa protein, and apple cider vinegar, while the children brush her coat. The family then shifts to birthday preparations: decorating the house, making a crepe cake, and opening gifts ranging from a water gauge to books and geraniums. Throughout the day they work on farm tasks—transplanting herbs and vegetables, taking an inventory of tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, and peppers, applying compost tea and blood meal, and building a sheep shelter and extending fences. The host promotes a giveaway of gardening resources, an electric poultry net, and other tools, encouraging viewers to check the description. Interspersed are light‑hearted family banter, reflections on past birthdays, and plans for upcoming livestock (pigs, meat chickens). The video blends practical farm advice, celebratory family moments, and community engagement.

Mm. We've been worried a little bit about Violet. She's been panting, panting, breathing hard. Uh, once we saw her, you know, with her tongue out. We've worked it out to give her some shade. Talking with Dennis, there we have a shade. It'll be nice and cool by the creek. Created this lane going down to it. We're still moving them every day on new grass, but just like we have a lane back to their waterer, now we also have a lane back to a shade source. From our research, we think maybe she might need a protein boost. She hasn't lost her coat yet, so I've given her Hey, would you please— would you please brush her? That'd be awesome. If she's not losing her coat, that could mean a lack of protein. It could mean a need for copper. We've started back up the apple cider vinegar and alfalfa. I only quit that because the green grass was in. I didn't figure she'd need it, so we're just going to be careful and put it back in. Looks like she's liking it. Lily's going to physically assist and brush her. Tell me if any of that hair comes off. You should have a fine smooth coat, Violet. It's spring, honey. She may need some copper. That may be in my mineral mix, the TA. All right, here on top it's got salt, magnesium. It does have copper, so she can get her copper from the trace mineral TA.
I'm getting hair off.
Okay, that's good. You want to use the other side? You might catch hair even better. Bear's giving you a little good morning kiss.
That means she doesn't want me to bother. That means she doesn't want me to bother. She's moving. Let's stay on here.
So we've done 3 things to help her. Made sure there was copper in her minerals. There is, check. We're gonna physically brush her. We've given her shade, and we're starting back the alfalfa, which is an extra source of protein. And we've done the apple cider vinegar, which is just an overall health boost. Looks like you might have a little cold, Violet. Hear her breathing? Maybe that's normal because it's not hot out here. Well, she's not lacking in production. All right, let's go outside.
I didn't move the meat.
We're gonna hopefully move the sheep, buddy. Big day today. Mama's birthday. We've got to create a sheep shelter. We've got to set out plants. Oh my, no, it's Mom's birthday. Have you told her? Have you told Mom happy birthday? Oh my, how am I supposed to get through this? I guess I'm too big for forts these days. Happy birthday! Okay, Mom is in the back taking her shower now. Now is our chance to decorate. Okay, I think she's gonna be very pleased with y'all's decoration. And you're folding towels, how nice. Look at this, you even created a waterfall. Boy, Mom's gonna feel very loved swimming. Jonah's— oh, they decorated in the kitchen. Jonah's putting away dishes. Hey, look, they even decorated my camera stand. Thank you, Josiah.
I did that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Do I close my eyes again?
No, no, no. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now open your eyes.
Now open them?
Yeah.
Oh, you guys did a good job.
Thank you. I did this, Mama.
You did that? Thank you.
Mom, you know how I did it.
Is what?
Is this too low?
No, it's not too low.
It's perfect.
Thank you. Got your safety first glasses on?
No, I just wear them. I don't use them. Hey Papa, get out of here. You've already lost them twice.
You guys want me to go on there?
Oh yeah.
Oh, can you handle the big boy? I got goals. 10:45. Beauty, do you think we can transplant these plants in an hour and 15 minutes by lunchtime? Well, first we gotta get through this obstacle. Hey, how are we supposed to get through this?
Uh, slide down the slide.
Oh, I guess my adult brain doesn't think of that.
Dog, lay down!
We're a bunch of old people.
Slightly terrifying.
Oh, watch your head here too. What are you doing?
We're mowing.
Oh, you're mowing? You string trimming?
Yeah.
Okay, let's hear it. Good job. First thing we gotta do is take an inventory. How many tomatoes you get, Mom? 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 tomatoes, 8 cucumbers, 4 watermelons, 8 peppers. We got our spacing. Thank you, Eric Coleman, New Organic Grower. Did you guys see that we're giving that away? I'm giving that away. I want to help you guys. That book is an invaluable resource for plant spacing, for soil blocking instructions, all kinds of good stuff, general organic gardening. I'm giving that away and many other useful tools in my grand giveaway, including an electric poultry net, the energizer, the thing that powers it, and the fence. Like, that alone is worth $450 and more stuff. So check out that giveaway. It's open till May 9th. 10 PM. I'll leave a link for that down in the description. I've got good news about our struggling garden. It's coming back. Look how green. Still a little yellow down here, coming back strong. And look at the spinach, y'all. Bam! No problems with that spinach. Mom's compost tea and extra blood meal has helped it. Here, you want to grab them from me? Okay.
And tarragon.
That's good. That's smart. Put them by the kitchen. Here, let me hand you stuff because I don't know where it goes, but I can hand it to you. This is coming alive, Mom's herb garden.
Can I plant this?
Are these in— are these in the spots?
Yeah.
Well, I'd say we almost planted all these herbs. Having to dig down, it's 8 inches of mulch here. How do you think it's going, Rebecca?
I think it's going fabulous.
Okay, good. We got lots of good help, don't we?
Yep, we're almost done.
Yep, we're almost done with the herbs. No way we're gonna make our goal. That's okay, we have all day. We did want to build a sheep shelter. Don't know if we'll get to that today or not, but we'll see. We still got the vegetables over there, remember? So we'll probably finish in the herb area, take a break for lunch, and then do that. Got Mama a trench on the outside for her beloved— those are flowers from our wedding, aren't they?
Some of them are.
They're not the flowers from our wedding, but they're the same color.
No, these were. The stalk was.
You guys enjoy yourself in the noonday sun. I'm gonna go in and have a nice cold Kombucha. I'll come with you. We're making Mama's crepe cake. Classic, classic request by her. She's working out in the garden, we're getting it done in here. Put that over there.
Yeah, like that.
Cook it, cool it, stack it. Did you get the garden stuff done out there, Beck?
Well, a lot, yes.
Good. This from Violet?
This is Violet's cream.
Is it an ideal birthday for you to be working out in the sun, getting your hands dirty?
That's what I like.
So that was a stark contrast to last year in New York City.
Yeah.
Today it's Rebecca's birthday, and yes, we are in a hotel room.
That's right.
Happy birthday. Is that not the best birthday gift you could ever get?
So good.
Slept 10 hours last night? Oh my, 10 hours straight, no interruptions. Did you wake up?
No.
Do you wish you were in New York City right now?
No. I don't. I think she might for her cake.
I very much like this much better.
Nice tranquil view out there while you cook.
Can you hold that?
Ew, ew, we have cows!
How'd the whipped cream come out?
Beautiful.
There it is.
The best looking crepe.
But it's a kid's creation. It's made with love.
Put some candles. Candles?
Yeah. I don't know if we can put 47 candles on there. 47.
Yeah, we can.
How old's Mom, Gideon?
Only 2.
Only 2? How old's Mom, Josiah?
He's thinking about it. He knows.
Do you know?
20-something.
That's good. That's always a good guess.
29. Yeah, 29.
Kids, you did a good job. You made do with candles. We had 3 single candles and a 9. For 39. That's your meal of choice, Rebecca?
Yes, chicken parmesan.
Cook your own supper?
I got help.
I got lots of help.
Everybody helped you?
Yes.
Big Daddy and Grandma are here. So what was life like 39 years ago when Rebecca showed up?
Oh, about 8:30. Started in labor at church at 11 o'clock. 11:20, 11:40, noon. I thought, oh, here she comes. So we, we went to the hospital at 6:30 and she was born at 8:30.
Wow.
Yep.
So came quick.
Thank goodness. Good for you.
Oh, don't burn that camera.
Oh, let's get another match going.
Uh-oh. Okay, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot.
Oh, Becky, did you just blow out your candles early?
I was trying to blow out his because I wanted to get burned.
Mine's struggling in its old age.
All right, so we say happy birthday, guys. Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Mommy, happy birthday to you. Yay!
See?
Wee! That was easy.
Oh, she did it! She did it!
That I heal in 2017.
2018.
Was this what you imagined your daughter would be doing at 39 years old?
Oh my goodness, no.
What did you imagine? I'm not sure. Suburbia.
Oh yeah, couple kids.
9-to-5 husband. SUV.
Private Christian school.
Yeah.
Start with Jonah's present. They got a fancy dancy wrap job.
You know what it is?
Oh, oh, I like it.
It's a water gauge.
He got me a water gauge. Did you get this for me at the fair? At the sale?
My neck!
Look how beautiful!
No, my neck! Okay, wait.
Alright, I like it. I like it. Thank you, Jonah.
Cut the bottom!
I like this because now we can see how much rain we get. I'll go to Gideon.
You know what it is?
No, I—
Cat!
It's what?
Don't tell! Don't tell! He's helping you open it.
It's a cat!
Where? Where's it at, Gideon? Oh, there it is. Did you get me a cat?
Thank you, Gideon.
Give Mom a hug.
You are so—
this is all he was ripping into it.
Oh, oh boy, that book, The Courage of Sarah Noble. Thank you for thinking of me. I wonder what this one is.
Oh, they're all different.
1,000 gifts.
Yeah, and one, and one, and one. She gave me your book.
Oh, I like it. Thank you, Lily. Lily is my, uh, copywriting girl. She loves to copy books and stuff. Here we go.
Here.
Oh, oh, this is beautiful. Thank you. A geranium. All right, let's This one, Grandma, you're the last. A pink geranium. Is this a geranium? I think it is.
Dear Mama, this one can live inside.
I hope you have a good birthday.
That one.
Thank you for taking me on the Good American Farm Tour.
That one.
You are welcome.
That what our house going to look like.
That's what our house is going to look like.
No, that's just a barn right now.
That's just a barn. Let's see what it says. Daughter, nothing could be more beautiful than memories of the dear little girl you you are. Sorry, it's all we could come up with. Wait, there's, there's two in here.
That's funny.
It says, sorry, it's all we could come up with except the thought of the unique and wonderful person you are today. Happy birthday with lots of love.
It cost all their money to get you you out of the house.
That's right, that's right.
Back at it again outside. What are you putting on your plants?
Compost tea.
Okay, well, it worked over there, it should work here. Yeah, this is coming to life, Beck. You ever get to the end of the day and just run out of steam? Totally run out of steam, but we have so much to do. You guys putting away the chickens?
Yep.
Thank you. They're putting away the chicken so we can temporary pull up the fence, extend the garden bed here. We've got this garden bed to do, we've got the sheep shelter to build, pigs are coming, we have to build a meat shaw— that's a chick shaw for these meat birds. They need to get out to grass soon. It's, it's, it's on! Spring is here!
Done!
Wow, well, that, that's helpful. We gotta roll up the fence and then redo it the way Oh, and the extension down here. We have removed the fence, we've opened it up. We still left them into this run, they can get right here. That's it, folks, we open this up. At least we have places we can plant now. Not gonna get it to today, it's like almost 8 PM, so we're gonna call it a day. What did you boys move this all by yourself?
Thank you. Papa, and you have a hammer and stick.
Yes, of course.
You just reach over here and just grab it.
Oh wow.
And it keeps it dry.
Cool. So you have set up 2x4 or 4x4s holding that Energizer up and that stores your hammer. Good idea.
And so it kills less grass. Oh, look, look, we had it over here, here, Papa, and it hardly killed anything.
