Mothers Day Special

In this Mother’s Day vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes and his family celebrate the holiday on their working farm. The day begins with a plan to make cannolis for Mom, involving the kids in the kitchen while the adults coordinate a packed schedule of farm chores: milking cows, separating calves, moving lambs, handling pig duties, repairing a trailer, fixing electric nets, managing water systems, and turning compost. Throughout the day, the family members (Rebecca, Josiah, Jonah, Henry, Lily, Blaze, and others) share responsibilities, discuss challenges, and joke about future projects like a cabin and a chickshaw. Mid‑video, Victor promotes an Abundance Plus membership giveaway, offering a solar energizer, a poultry net, his book Homestead Builds, and a $500 build credit, along with a free PDF on permaculture design. The vlog blends informal family interaction, practical homesteading tips, and community engagement, ending with the cannoli tasting and reflections on the day’s work.

Special day today, so we have homegrown snacks. Happy Sunday seed day! It's a very special one. This is Mother's Day, and we're gonna work extra hard to make it special. I'm gonna have my hand at cannolis. Cannolis, that's gonna be the dessert. Yes, the Burn It Up Cooking Show is making cannolis for Mother's Day. I've never done it. We'll see how it goes. What's this?
I'm straining the avocado for the—
this the cannoli filling? Yes. Tell me what to do.
You just tie it up like this.
Think that's working. It's 7:40. Hey, I let him sleep in this morning.
Can you stop? Hey, hey, let's go!
It's Mother's Day. We've got a lot to do on the farm, so we all have to kind of chip in. Josiah's gonna tackle these dishes for Mom. Henry, we're vlogging here, bud. We're gonna build the cannolis early afternoon and then watch a Mother's Day movie with Mom. Hey, let's go, guys. Come on, you guys, let's divide and conquer. You guys on the eggs, Josiah's on the dishes. Forgot, I'm gonna salt brine all these steaks. This too goes in the fridge. Jonah, we have so much to do. We got to go, bud. Let's go. All right, the goal is to get done with the farm by this— by lunch.
Okay, I don't know how to help you because I don't completely understand it.
We can go like that to do chores and then try out the cabin eventually. Finally, we were able to keep the calves separated. Who There's the physical barrier. I've let mom over now and we're gonna milk her. I forgot, we don't need to move the cows forward. The little calf is behind them and she needs to be by the calf in order to be milked. We've been putting the calf in a physical barrier to separate her at night so we can get some milk. Here's our situation: we do not have a net to move the non-milkers in. The boys opted out of it yesterday, and then I didn't remember that, that, and we slept in. And so now we need a net set up for everybody to move into before we can milk, because you sure can't milk her with everybody else around. Oh, good question. All right, I'm gonna take a moment We gotta fix these nets. Maybe we fix one breach every day. Okay, it's not the prettiest, but it's fixed. I'd rather fix another thing than buy another thing. That took a while though. That took 30 minutes probably. As long as it's just getting a spy, let's just do a little bit every day. I'll hit this one next. I want to fix it so bad now. But we have so much more to do. Jonah, did the cows get to this tree? They did. Punks. That's your future, honey. That's your future shade tree. Uh-oh, rain's threatening. I've got to get these little lambs separated from their mama. It's not been working to keep them in this electric net. They've learned to just real quick jump right through it. We've got to move the pigs. We still have to do the pig chores. These are all musts, rain or shine. Yesterday's cow water, full because it was on auto water. We can leave it. That's for the sheep, and we're just setting up one water a day. For two different systems. It's nice. We don't have our permanent line in here yet, but it's close enough down to the hydrant we can run it. Let's hope it's long enough. They like that newly planted grass. Look at that, they just drove it into the ground. I don't think this is a fruit tree, is it? I don't think that's a fruit tree. That fruit tree is dead. This one's going. How can I protect it from them real quick? There it is today. We'll look at it tomorrow. There's certain things we need to do before it rains. We gotta get these little ewes and the Luchador ring over to the Violet's pasture. We gotta move the pigs. We gotta check on Minty, see if they need moved. All before it rains. Which one of those would be the most annoying to do when it's raining? Probably the youth. I think the next priority— it'd suck really bad to do these lambs in the rain. Let's get them over with.
What's that? Concrete.
Oh, okay.
I did fill it full of rocks.
All right, when'd you do that? Oh, okay. First we must do the big pig chores. Come on, it's starting to mist. Let's go to get at the metal mobile ring. For the sheep, we have to move the trailer. We should see though if all our wheels are here and intact. 1, 3— oh, doesn't, doesn't this need— well, doesn't this need welding? Shoot, Josiah, what are we going to do about this? It really needs to be welded back. How quick could you weld that? Well, then we need to tie it. Hey, the wheels are good. It's just, how can we rig that together real quick? Let's get our wire. I think that'll be our quickest, most secure fit. See it? It's over there on the corner. You could use that one. Yeah, long term it needs welding. Josiah, do you want to weld in the rain? Is it— I don't think you can weld in the rain, can you?
No.
Okay, look at our steam off the compost pile. We needed this rain for that compost pile. Wanted to get it heated up 120 plus, and then we'll start turning it every 2 days. We'll make compost pretty quick. Up here's where we could scythe for greens for the pigs. Look at all this. It's not really worth it to get something grazing over here. We have to do it real tight. It almost needs to go in there, you know what I mean? It's caught on the wheel. I need all the boys to help me move this trailer. Hey, you've been keeping the scythe over here? That's primo pig food right there, bud.
Kind of cool, it makes windrows.
Yeah, makes it good and easy for making hay. 2, 3. Bring that with you, Justin. Thank you. Go easy. Let's hold our— hope our Temp fix works. All right, we're rolling. The wires are holding so far. Hey, hey, hold on, hold on, hold on! Don't go! Wait, I'll tell you when. Let's get it straight in the road. Wait, timeout, timeout, timeout!
All right, the mobile sheet pen, y'all.
So do we capture them in this and then walk them over?
I was thinking, why don't we build like a little chute?
Okay.
And then herd all the mama sheep in there and then separate them. They'll be so quick in there.
You honestly think they're all gonna herd in here? Yeah, they're all gonna herd in there.
Yeah, look, I'll set up— you pull this net up here.
This is a 50-footer right here. I think in order to get the little lambs it's be very hard to cut out the little lambs, get them out from their mothers. So we have to herd it— uh, no, we have to herd everybody over because they'll follow their mothers, trap them in the cage, and then only let the mothers and the big lambs out. So we'll get the alfalfa. Do you still have some alfalfa over there? No, we're not going to do that. No, they'll push through the fence if you press them too hard along this net. Obviously they can just jump right through it, Jonah. Yeah, even if it's on, they'll jump right through it. Not you, Blaze! Not Blaze! Why is Blaze going in there? Oh wow, it worked! And he was gonna go in there. You letting people out?
Well, they— I thought they wanted to come out.
They don't want to come out.
Uh-oh, let those two go. Nope, stop them, stop them.
Yep, let that one go.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, they're about getting out.
Right here.
Does that work?
Yeah, that works.
Wow, they're eating. All right, this is gonna have to be moved 2 or 3 times in a day, probably. This is our lamb suppers come fall. Need them weaned so that the moms can put the energy into their new babies that they have, because we're gonna be hungry again and again. We gotta keep the flow going. The question is, are you guys gonna stay? Are they gonna find a way out? Jonah, did you start getting the water out? Yes. Wait, what are you doing? We're not moving them yet.
Look, we can use this net here since we only have one.
What are you doing?
If I connect it there, then we can build off of this one.
Can you give the kids responsibility and autonomy? It's hard to get any— get the leadership back sometimes. Sometimes you got to let me lead, and sometimes you got to trust me. You're about to—
that's You want to bet that this won't make it and make a perfect square?
We're moving them every week and we're finding they, they pretty much cover it. Got an idea. How are we gonna grip that? I'm not sure if we can. Wired it together up top there. Moved this area out and planted it. We're going bigger. This is last week's. Already coming up.
It liked whatever this is.
They're here, we're going to want to come over here. We still got hurricane cleanup. We got trees down in the pastures. Still quite a bit of grass over there. I swear it's over. It's over after this. I think we'll have had 50 gallons of strawberries. We're in the garage. We started to go make Mom's cannolis, and we don't have any all-purpose gluten-free flour. The problem is, I'm not sure Whole Foods is gonna have it either, but it's our only hope. Kind of stuff we get is you gotta order it. I think they'll at least have ingredients for us to make our own all-purpose flour if we need to. This is not just like, oh, we've run out of flour, let's go to the store. We don't live 5 minutes from the store. We're 20 minutes from the store at best. This is somebody used the last of the flour and didn't let the beautiful one know. By the time you travel there and get back, we're looking at like an hour, hour and a half. There's your birthplace right over there.
Is that where I was born?
That's where you were born, right over there.
I have a D-net fish for Phil.
Okay, well, this is where you were born, right there in that seat. Becky, you're giving birth.
You are? You're giving birth?
He's out, Rebecca.
He's out.
One day we'll, uh, buy that gas station and turn that pizza restaurant into Henry's Pizza and Bucci.
What? Really?
Yeah, that's it, that's it. That's exactly the kind we get. Grab a couple for good measure. That wasn't so bad. Okay, oh, I'm a softie too. I caved. I got him a little bar and coconut water. I mean, they came to the grocery store with me, uh, maintaining the peace on Mother's Day. And we're back, we have our ingredients. Get everything ready. Mom says she wants to be part of the— when we actually mold it and stuff it, but we're gonna do everything else. We've got maple sugar and butter. It says cream it together.
What does that mean?
Will you get me a mixer? Yeah, because this is going to take forever. Is this the right paddle? I couldn't find another paddle. This seems like a weird paddle. It's kind of stopped changing, so I think— got the rest of the ingredients in there. How do you think this is going to go?
I have no idea.
What's this? This is cannoli making machine.
This is a Paeselle Chef.
What does that mean?
So it's like a cookie, a Paeselle cookie.
Oh, you have to move fast before it hardens.
Uh-huh.
Oh, it's hot. Let me do it.
Turning out good. That's a cute one. This is a bigger one. They're perfect.
Now I'm gonna make the filler. The ricotta strained. Nicely. Look at all that watery liquid down in there. And we're, we're making the feeler. Do you have the bag for that? We're not ready. We're gonna wait to the last minute to fill it. Mom's not out.
Mom, Beck's playing in the toilet again. Surprise!
We made you eggs!
Less sugar!
Oh no, no, no, he's gonna put that in his mouth and become one of the 400 estimated people that die from acute salmonella.
Do not put that finger in there!
Did everybody like the movie? Yeah. You liked it?
Yeah.
Rebecca, did you like the movie?
Yeah.
We are making Mom a special potato dish. Definitely a cheat meal on Mother's Day. We've got some frozen potatoes, also for a cheat meal. They're just so delicious. Lily's shredding some cheese for it. Hey, we only need 2 cups, girl. Let's see what we have. Whoa, that's way more than 2 cups. I'm gonna put this cheese on this. Mom tell me that needs to be covered. Beautiful one says cheese must also go on top. If you ever want to know what we're gonna have for supper, we're gonna have meat and cheese. Which color are y'all like? I like—
Jonah likes this color.
Well, that's the color you like. I like it.
What, you're not sure? I don't know. What do you think about that color?
I have a hard time committing.
I don't like them. Jonah's claimed this cabin as his future home here, so he kind of gets to say. Is this clean enough for the insulators? Insulation coming. How does that look to you, Dar? Delicious. That's— you're a meat and potatoes gal. This is what you want.
And broccoli.
This is what you want on Mother's Day. Meat and potatoes. When did this happen, Beck? Jonah and Josiah eat more than me. Did you ever think you'd have your kids taller than you and eat more than us? It's inevitable.
It'll be a trip when they're taller than you.
Oh, I know. I think Jonah's gonna do it. This one is going crazy. He wants you to open up your presents.
Which one should I start with?
The little one.
The little one? But little ones are fun for little boys. Oh, it is. He made it by himself.
Oh, earrings. Yeah, that's, that's why there's a box in it. Box in it.
I heard some waffles.
For some reason I was expecting—
I just wear them on special occasions.
This is cash money.
No, that's from Lily. Oh, that's from Lily. That's from Lily.
Be that heart.
He, he, he made the, uh, Josiah, you made this?
I made it, but Josiah made the heart.
He made the heart.
Oh, you made the heart!
Thank you, that is nice.
Henry, move your hand.
Oh, you figured it out?
Yes, I did. Nice, I like it. It's an exfoliator, so you like wet it and then you—
I'm going to see—
supposed to slough off.
I want to see it.
I got her a necklace with everybody's Initials. It's coming.
Cool, thank you.
That's a good Mother's Day present.
It is. You guys made it together?
Oh, one more.
I have another one. I wrapped it for you in a box. You made me a new one cuz my old one got destroyed. I don't even know where it went.
I like this.
He made me another. I was going to— I was thinking about—
this is the only color I had, so I painted it.
I like it.
I like how you used everything— the foot peg for the tail. Yeah, we got some little wire antenna wires. You haven't had a cold gnocchi since you're a kid.
How is it? Probably my like early 20s.
Yeah, kid. How old is it? I mean, how good is it? 2 thumbs up since you went gluten-free.
Yeah, well, even before that I hadn't had a cannoli in quite a while.
First cannoli, good. 1 out of 10. Everybody's gonna say good. Josiah, what, worth the trouble?
1 out of 10.
Oh, what do you say, Jonah?
These are not ice cream cones, but they're a lot like them, aren't they?
Gideon's almost done. Must be a 10 over there. Have you ever had a cannoli? Hey, let's try something different tonight. It's been a while since you've seen our chickens go up.
