My Pig Compost Corner Just Got Better

Justin Rhodes builds a portable pig compost bin that uses pigs to turn hot compost once the walls come down. The system layers pallets, ramps, deep mulch, and hot compost to keep everything sanitary. His Permaculture Pigs Kickstarter has raised nearly $12,000 from 158 backers.

Why not put the pallet inside with the pigs in place? The pallet protect it till we get it full, get it heated up, get it breaking down the bacteria, let it be hot for a couple of days. And then open it up in place, and the pigs can help us turn the compost pile. Let's just tie one corner here. Now, before we secure the other corners or even figure out where that is, let's, let's get our ramp. That's about the perfect distance. I wanted to get the compost pile as far away from the fence as I could so that when we pull it down and they're turning compost, it's not just getting all over our fence. Look at that, we just go right over it with the wheelbarrow. It's not touching that, it's farther away from this. Okay, we can secure the rest of this bin. We've cleared their manure. I guess they're hunting more places. Thank you guys. Won't take too long to fill this up and get a cubic yard, 4 cubic yards of compost. A real quick look at the system: Premier One electric Pig net, simple, easy to set up in an outdoor run. They could come out and get the sunshine. They have a shed. This could be off of a barn, this could be a carport. A simple 50-gallon waterer, 2 feed pans, a compost bin right in the midst of it. And this is the key right here if you're going to keep pigs in a small area: deep mulch. This is Wood chips, they tend to poop and manure. Look, on the wood chips. What to do with it to keep it clean in a small space, keep it sanitary in here? That's where the compost bin comes in. It's 4 walls to keep them out of it. This fills up, it starts to heat up, breaks down the bacteria, fries it, anything else that might be in it, and then we remove the walls and the pigs help us turn. Notice how we have the pallet as far as we could get away from the fence. This ramp just above the fence so that we can get other materials in here. Hey kids, you got the other materials? All right, bring it on. This is one of 4 pig systems. I'm gonna teach this in depth in my new film, Permaculture Pigs. It's out right now on Kickstarter. Until Sunday, 11:59 PM. Do go check it out. This system, the— I think what we're temporarily, maybe permanently calling the, um, carport system, pigs under a carport, the 240-square-foot farm, the forest system, and then what we did last year, the garden system, the animal garden miracle with pigs. Hey, you guys got us a load of cow bedding. Yep, walk in the plank, Mr. Brown. I've got this, uh, cow bedding to put in there. Let's try out our new ramp. And this with a bum hand. There it is. They can try, they're not going to get in there too far. Josiah, will you turn this fence off and let's straighten it up? Just checking the fence every day. Make sure— I mean, we should come through and string train this tall grass and put our fence back. All right, let's test this fence. The key to keeping pigs in is to keep that really hot. It's at 8K, that's the max reading. It's probably more at 12K, which is plenty to keep pigs in. They have put— they have pushed dirt onto this, so we're gonna get it off of it so it doesn't ground it out. 2 weeks ago you'd been able to climb in there. Oh hey, Jason! Morning. Come here and check this out. Jason back for some more. Jason, you're gonna be my left-hand man today, doing some things I cannot do. I think you need some help. Yes. Look at this, we got the material in, bro. Okay, I can see it now. You can see it now? It doesn't look nice. Yeah. And I noticed yesterday— hey dude, we were able to haul material in with the tractor too, right through there. You didn't have to take this down? No. Okay, I didn't take it down. The tractor bucket could fit right through there. We put a layer of logs and then we put a layer, probably about 3 cubic yards of compost that was already hot, and then maybe about a half a yard of wood chips on top. Don't you see it now? I see it. Doesn't this look like a nice habitat? Yeah, it does for a couple of pigs. We're waiting on a water nipple We have the barrel. This is ready, guys. This is ready. We know what we got to do on the Hog Mahal. Let's go see and do some work on getting these pigs in the forest. The goal is to get these guys out of here this week to demo the other two pig systems throughout the summer. Oh look, and I gave you a rub. I gave you a nice rub. Johnny, you know where my loppers are? Get in. There's some boots we'd kind of long forgotten. There's something wrong with those boots. They're sandy. All right, we were gonna go to the forest, but we need to change plans because we've got a— we've got Jason here, we've got an A-frame chicken coop, we've got 100 chicks that need to be out. Really 120-ish. That's going to be perfect for them, but it needs some work and it needs to get down the hill. I don't see any better day to do this than with all these strong young people. It was going super easy with all these people and then the, uh, the pin slipped. We could either wrap it around the 2x4 or you could go get your drill and we'll do a pilot hole. Look at you guys! I went to scout it out, I turned around, they're pulling it. We need to mend our, our poultry wire. That side's not too bad, uh, but it's this side, Jason, that needs a lot of work. Oh, here, need a door. I don't even know where the door went at this point. Needs to be attached down there. So yeah, perch is broken, it looks like. The name of the game is you're probably going to be pushing against it some. Let's get it down here next to Jason's truck. You're basically not pulling, you're basically pushing. There you go. That good working platform right next to your truck, Jason. That's good. And you remember yesterday I had to pull up all my PEX water line? Well, We're gonna see if Lowe's is gonna be good to us and take this back even though it's out of its wrapper. We do have the receipt, so I'm feeling pretty good about it. Jason just went to Lowe's and came back. Tell me the good news, Jason. Tell me they took that stuff back. Except for two of the rolls. Are you serious? Yeah, they try to look at numbers and try to figure it out, but they couldn't do it. Got some cool wheels though. Black rims. Yeah. Oh my word, yes! And look how high it sits off the ground. Yes, I like it. I'm just putting in the hardware. I made the mistake by getting the fat— oh, fatties. Yeah, they make little poultry— I know, I didn't see them— nails. I thought these would be all right, but then I'm like, it's so— it's a little bit— okay, Hurricane Category 5 approved. I think Big Daddy will be happy. It should last. Okay. That's the Kickstarter update as of the publishing of the video, tacking this part in at the end. Pow! Almost $12K. You know what excites me the most though? 158 people, I think it was 158 people, slash and/or families are going to change their life. Their lives are going to change because they're going to take this information, they're going to be inspired, they're going to learn how, and they're going to grow their own bacon. That's exciting. Now, what is it like to get inside of Justin Rhodes' product, one of Justin Rhodes' products? Well, I can't tell you, right? That's like, that's like weird, right? So what do other people say? Adam, a customer of mine, love you, buddy. I'm gonna read this. This is what Adam says. This is not Justin, I'm gonna read it. He posted this on the Kickstarter about some of his experiences with us in the past. Justin and Rebecca have been a huge inspiration to my family. Yes! Through Justin's guidance, we have made huge additions to our homestead. We have the confidence to do the things we would have never thought were possible. So Justin's permaculture pig project will give homesteaders across the nation the tools and knowledge to raise quality pigs and get them to your plate. Support this project. Thanks. That's from Adam. Adam, thank you for those kind words. So go check out the Kickstarter page. I've left the link in the description. Time is limited. We're closing it down. I'm getting to produce content. Actually, I'm uploading content already this week to it, guys. So there's going to be stuff available. The Cliff Davis raw interview, the Cliff Davis Spire Ridge Permaculture tour. That's gonna be available to you guys after the Kickstarter at that premium level. The castration video, that's done. It's gonna be up and we'll get this Kickstarter over with. We'll just upload. Hey, you know what? Let's see if Beauty has gotten us tickets to go see Joel and to go see Jaren Arbuckle. Hey, have you ordered our tickets to Maine and Virginia? I'll put that on my list right now. Okay, put that on the list.
