My Pig Got Out + I Was Hopeless Without Feed

In this 30‑minute family farm vlog, Ben leads a chaotic but collaborative day of chores on the Rhodes homestead. The morning starts with checking batteries for pumpkin‑curing equipment and testing electric fence segments, followed by a frantic repair of a trailer axle whose bolts were over‑tightened, causing the wheel to spin. The crew then improvises a water‑line connection using heated plastic nipples and a quick‑release fitting while Jonah fetches feed. A pig escapes, prompting a tense search and rescue that ends with Ben calming the situation and re‑securing the fence. The group moves on to milking cows, herding two “bromance” cows (Stud Muffin and Bear) through a newly created lane, and setting up netting for livestock. Later, they discuss building a chicken coop (the “Chickshaw”), debating the need for a swivel bar and how to attach landing bars. The vlog also previews upcoming tasks: chicken butchering, arrival of a flock of chicks, and a week‑away sheep herd, while showcasing a “pig garden miracle” where pumpkins, butternut, and acorn squash sprouted from feed scraps. Throughout, family members—Rebecca, Jonah, Grandpa, Big Daddy, and others—share jokes, offer help, and reflect on the day’s challenges, ending with plans for future projects and a brief health check on Grandpa.
Chapters
Good morning! What are you up to? Getting the pumpkins. Mom's got them putting the squashes up on the porch to cure. Look at this guy. Pumpkins, spaghetti squash, butternut squash. Jonah, did you unplug these this morning?
Yes.
Did you test them?
Yes.
Look, I'll show you how much they've got.
Full battery. Let's try it. Where'd you go? You're in the feed grain bag. Okay. Does that help? Last night I noticed they hover around the feeder, so they need to be removed before dark.
Grab on and help me pull this bucket.
Put our batteries back in this fertilizer. Let's see if it's blinking green. Okay, it's blinking green. 11.4. Let's hook it up to fence and see what it's getting. Okay, just 2. It's because it's wet and it's touching so many spots and such a big fence.
That'll hold a chicken.
I think so. Okay, we're at the sea monsters now. Doesn't look like we had any casualties last night. What was it hitting at? 3.4. See, I feel more confident in that one. All right, last day with you guys. You look plenty big. We're hoping for 5-pound carcasses in our freezer. Can you move the whole thing, feeders and all? Go real slow, go real slow. Bunch of feathered Jabba the Hutt out here. They can't jump out of the way. Oh shoot, they did get something! Shoot, Donald, you're not doing your job, man. How'd it get through on a 3-point? You think this was an arrow? Air attack tonight. Jonah, let's see that if we remove the food earlier, that will encourage them to get under. Thinking this is an aerial attack because our, our fence was hot. I hope we don't have a predator that's just going through a hot fence. Got the nets up now since we have a mower. Since we have a trailer, let's get the rest of this stuff in it. The Energizer, the water, the fences. It's a bit of a difficult move. We gotta go up this hill. Got these Icelandic chickens, they're going behind the cows 3 days stirring the cow manure, eating the fly larva. Let's get you on to your next duty, guys. You guys ready for this move? Hmm, you ready? You guys ready? This is that hill I was talking about. I thought it was a little harder today. Our other wheel's coming off. Or is that the same wheel? What has happened? That's still holding. This is starting to— Why is that? I can't say I really get it. It's not coming unbolted.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, the axle's turning and it shouldn't be turning. It's gonna break something if I don't get that axle to stop turning. These clamps have gotten loose and they're not holding that axle. They're not stopping it from spinning. It's probably too tight on this wheel, so the wheel can't spin without the bolts. I bet that's it. Let's try to bring this back in. Yeah, there we go. Bring this nut— now let's see if it'll roll. Oh, it rolls no problem. So that's the problem. Now let's tighten this up. It doesn't need to be that loose.
See if it works.
That was an easier fix than I thought. The bolts were just on too tight, pinching the wheel, not letting it turn without the bolts. And when it was turning, it was turning the bolts and unwinding it. That put us at 8:40. Gotta milk at 9:30. That's some of the pressure, you know. Gotta want to keep it consistent with the milking, but also have other things to do like edit the vlog and the weekend special of our, uh, pastured pig trip last weekend. Okay, try, guys, we're almost there. We got the netting up. I'm feeling quite a bit more hopeful. Got 40 minutes. All we got to do is let them out, put the feed out, and then we can start working on this cow paddock.
I don't know, you pulling doubles?
Yeah, we pulling doubles today, Henry. And you gotta think of a name for your trailer. All right, I'm pretty sure They didn't have what I needed at Lowe's, so I picked up more of what we already had. I think this nipple has to be much smaller. Look, there was one box empty. I don't think that's gonna fit in there even if I heat it up, but it's worth a try since it's all we've got. Heating up the plastic so it's moldable. Oh my gosh, this isn't gonna work. You see, it's gotten too soft right there. And not at the tip. Am I gonna do this?
This is so Jerry.
That's super Jerry, but I actually think it'll work. There it is, my idea. Got it on there all Jerry-like. Attached a quick release that way I can hook it back up to the water source, and I'll go attach it into my next one, and then I can hook my flexible water hose to it. Jonah went to get some Whoppers. He forgot to leave the plumbing stuff behind, so I'm kind of at a standstill. I was looking for him and look, you're not where you're supposed to be, buddy. I think that just happened because he came walking right by here. Jonah's got the feed too, so it's hopeless getting him back in. I'm not too worried about it since there's two still in. Maybe he got out right there. The fence on? It's on. Is it hitting? Hitting hard. You coming back? Come on back. Pig is wandering way down to that pine tree. I feel so hopeless— helpless. I feel helpless because I don't have a pig board, I don't have any feed. Here he comes. Just stay calm, as Cliff Davis would say. Pigs get out, just stay calm. And would you look at that, he's coming back. We're getting it. We probably shouldn't have been up here so long without feeding. Probably got excited. All right, Jonah's back. We got the feed.
Come on, come on.
Hopefully he'll— Jonah's kind of bringing up the rear. Let's turn off the fence over here, Jonah, and then we'll feed the other two, and then we'll lift up the fence for him. Okay, these guys That was easy. This is probably it right here. Maybe not. These branches onto the fence. Trying to turn on our water. I don't even know if we're gonna be able to pump water up this high. We got to make one of those connections here. Now we need to attach this to be able to attach the hose. Oh, we got water! Going to complicate things a little bit. Oh, good and bad. I'm so excited, we got water! But I got to cut it off, turn it off right here. All right, I got it on there. Hopefully didn't break it. It's a trickle. But it's here. Time to milk a cow. Pastime. Look at this guy. You're ruling the day, bro. You got this. We're gonna have to clip it back a little bit more right here, but you did good over here. Almost. You got one more, maybe. Okay, will you be able to run this line while I go milk?
Yes, yes.
We should be able to get Stud Muffin and Bear. The bromance. Out here. What do you think? Today, Jonah? Yes, after milking. All right, take it out. Dirty rags from milking. Jonah says Delantha. So our plan is to get the bromance out there. We need to herd them. Let's move them. They might move Phyllis and they might all go in the pasture, but then we can get them out of the pasture. Here, you get Bear. Well, I gotta get Muffin moving. Come on. If we could just get Phyllis in without getting Stud Muffin in that pasture, that would be good. So we'll get Phyllis in. Yeah, look, working perfect. Hang them out. Hang on there, Jonah. We open this lane for the bromance. All right, Jonah, you think you can get them moving? That was easy. They're going through. Keep going, keep going, guys. And then we'll cut it off. Flossie can get in there. Take it easy with them. Take your time. They're going in the new lane. Just pressure them lightly.
I set it all up on the end. They can't get out any way they try.
They're gonna go all the way into the woods. All the way into the woods. Okay. See, now we'll have a paddock down here and a paddock up there. Let's see if they can figure out what to do. We don't want to pressure him so hard he runs through the fence.
Did I do a good job?
Yes, you did a great job. That's where we want him to be. There's where we want him to be. Yay! Okay guys, don't rush in on there all at once, okay? It begins. Okay, that's what we're going for right here. Oh my gosh, look, perfect! This is just about to overflow. Good clean water trickling. Yes, but it did it. You guys recognize that? Grandma, Big Daddy building them Chickshaw Mini Me. Hopefully ready by tomorrow because we gotta get Donald A posse. Donald's gonna need a posse tomorrow. John, I think chicks are coming tomorrow too. Receiving chicks and butchering. So let's soak some feed right now. Well, Jenna, we did it. We got the cows in the woods. Does that feel good? Yeah. Now this breakfast is just that much more rewarding. Yeah, our sausage, kale, eggs. It's that time— editing. Grandma needs some help on the Chickshaw, some questions. I'm glad, I'm welcoming the break.
Is it the same? I guess, I don't know, but it appears to me the door, the door goes from here to here, 28 inches. It just looks— that looks a little bit bigger than that, but maybe it does, maybe it's not.
I guess after looking to have enough spacing to put the, uh Put a little shim on there so I can have that lock. Okay, where's your plywood?
Yeah, uh, at the house.
Oh, okay, okay. We could put it up there and see.
Yeah, see, it even looks bigger here. Was this—
oh, so you didn't buy this at Lowe's with the link I gave you because it was already pre-cut?
Oh, if it was pre-cut, then it's 24.
We had it— you had it back.
I thought that looked too wide.
So really, the door is 28 inches tall?
Correct.
Y'all got ahead of yourselves.
Yeah, see, we were giving them 2 lanes.
You're giving them a big old room. That much of a window right here. Yeah, that's gonna be— that's— what are you gonna put in there? A panda bear?
You know, the goose looks big. You gotta bring it 12 to the center of this.
All right, you guys got this. Do that. Okay, you got till tomorrow. About this time.
Well, we may have to have an extension.
Well, what are we gonna do with Donald? I'll put him up in your bedroom. Why? He's gonna need companions.
Why do they have to leave out there? What's going on?
Uh-oh, rain. Oh, it's kind of nice to edit when it's raining. I couldn't be outside working anyway, but we need to go. 3/4 inch to 1/2 inch.
I gotta go.
All right, it means I'm out of music, which means I'm almost done-ish. Big Daddy and Grandma need me again.
I went ahead and— I went ahead and cut the swivel. Yeah, the swivel bar.
Yeah. Oh, you did?
So we're gonna put that together next, but since we don't need to swivel it because we can just take our nesting boxes out and turn them sideways.
Yes, that's right, because the swivel bar was just to break chickens from nesting in your nest box— but you're perching in your nest boxes. So now that we figured out that you can just turn your nest box sideways, you don't need it. So what's your question?
How do you attach that swivel bar?
Let me see your pieces.
There we go.
So you could just attach this piece Solid.
So should I screw it together like this, or should I cut that, that tip off?
Oh, you still need the landing bar. You still need the swivel bar. Okay, it just doesn't need to swivel.
All right, so is this that—
it needs to be a landing bar.
This is another one.
Yep. But I guess all you could do— yeah, what you could do is just forget, don't build this, right? And where's your Oh, a real working pencil. So you could do a 2x4, you could do that. Pete, you could still— actually, it'd be better if you got one of your 2x2s and did that.
Okay, so—
and make sure to attach it to the end though, because they need that much space between here and there.
There'll be one like this.
Yep. And then I would attach your other one like this.
Put another one like that.
Like that.
Okay.
Hopefully you have it. Hey, he's got the easy job. He's got sweet tea.
I gotta have a break.
He's watching her go. Oh gosh, that's how it's gonna go, but it'll really mount up here and then you'll put a board right from there to there from the outside of it. Yeah, it mounts right here. Oh, okay, like right there. Yeah. All right, it's, it's on them. They're doing good. I saved him a step. Yes! I'm done the vlog. I'm starting to work on this massive project. There's 3 hours and a half raw footage of the pastured piglet weekend. 3 and a half hours, Rebecca. You look nice.
Thank you.
Missed you guys today. You guys went on a daughter-mom super fun day. See the fairy hair?
And we went and we went and had a tea party.
Oh!
And then we ate cupcakes at the tea party.
Fun.
I ate a whole tea— and me and Penelope ate a whole tiny tea kettle.
Fun!
And then, and then we went and walked around and shopped.
Okay.
And then we went to— well, we— I mean shopped. We walked around stores.
This is everybody's favorite meal. Is it chicken? What's the name of this meal?
Tuscan chicken.
Tuscan chicken. And I guess the— oh, with spaghetti squash. No, green beans. Spaghetti squash, a whole tray. Most of this from our farm, if not practically all of it. How's the Chickshaw build, Grandpa?
Well, we're about ready to put the wheels on.
Well, good, because you're not allowed to eat until it's done.
We don't have—
we don't have everything everything we need.
Evening chores. Sheep are coming in a week, one week. Have you guys seen— you guys remember when we had the pigs here and they had, uh, wood chips? I need those wood chips under the shed to be drying out for deep bedding for the sheep as we train them. They're not handled We're hoping to train them. Look what the pigs planted though and came up on their own, no maintenance. Uh, acorn squash, butternut squash, lamb's quarter— you count that? This is the pig garden miracle. Like, I didn't do anything. Look at these. Bam! Whoa, huge butternut! This is the compost pile that was here. First order of business harvest all that fruit. Come see, Arun's here setting up for the chicken butchering. Chicken butchering tomorrow. Yeah, you ready? Main man in the chicken butchering, that's for sure. Squash. Look at all the squash that the pigs planted. That's it. I don't even know where— I guess those seeds were in our food scraps when we were feeding them. We were eating a lot of acorn squash and they missed some and it just grew up. I'm hoping these aren't too far composted to dry out. Gonna get them under that shed and hope for the best. It's a week till we leave, but like 10 days till we get back. All right, Rebecca's got me doing this. We're getting the squash out of here. You tip it, Rebecca?
Yep, it's right over.
Maybe that's why y'all like the, uh, carts, but I love a wheelbarrow.
I like a cart much better.
Hey, this has got one wheel and it can't even go flat. You got 4 wheels waiting to go flat.
Well, I'm gonna do something that somebody told me, Ben.
You make—
you fill that up with that foam. Oh, and then they don't go flat.
Okay, okay, you ready to get this? We're gonna haul this up to our porch, get it more sunlight. It's gonna be close. Look at this cat. No, Manzo.
Hey cutie, cutie, you're just too cute.
You think we can walk it through this walkway?
Oh wow, did it. Uh-oh, it's pinched all of a sudden.
We did it, Rebecca! Now to put all those squash back on here. I've called the children. Children, children, come put the squash on this bottom rack, please. They should be over directly. I'm gonna go get some of that mulch.
Hey, I've not been feeling well, but I'm okay.
You all right, Pop?
Well, I think so. I'm having a hard time with this radiation. The worst thing about it is getting on and off that cotton-picking hard table. Just tears my back up and legs.
Does it make you tired?
Oh yes. Yeah, I was tired when you called.
Yeah.
But I didn't mean to not make sense.
You guys got it? Thank you. Get a few wheelbarrow loads over here. —drying out.
