I introduced 20 baby chicks into this posse last night to see how they did.
They don't know what to do.
This is the first time. Show them, show them, ladies. They're perched on the— gosh, I think they're all 20 on one perch. Come on, They're showing you how to do it. Show them, ladies. They're like, what? What? I like that though. They feel safe inside of that coop. That's why— that's one reason you put them in at night. Two, they're, you know, the big hens just accept them better. And there they are. They think that this is safe. What is? And they'll come back to it at night. Hey, Teddy, leave Aunt Anne alone. It's, uh, get some water and come back and see him. I can't sit around, I'm having oral surgery today. For those of you that have been following for a while, you know I've got chronic Lyme disease. I kind of contribute that to the loss of a few of my back left teeth. Well, anyway, I can't chew over there, and I tried a partial— it's non-invasive, but it's just uncomfortable. I would just lose it. Uh, and so we're getting implants, but we have to widen the jaw, and I think that's what this is about. We've already done one surgery, we got this one, and probably one more before we can actually get the teeth, and I can actually chew steak on the left side of my mouth. You are happy sitting away? They're just sitting there. Y'all just happy? Are y'all just happy to stay in there? Look how they clamor on each other. Given all the space, this is what they do. Good morning, Lily. You got some new chicks out in your posse. You want to go see them?
But Papa, my keens are missing, and one of my— that boot haven't gotten fixed yet, so no shoes, but they'll go barefoot.
Oh my gosh, you've lost your shoes? Yeah, it's not just Mr. Brown. There's a pink one here. Is that you? Let's go look inside.
That one's missing.
Let's find your keens. Are these them? Are these Mr. Brown? You work on finding them. I'm gonna dry Teddy for Mom. Here you go. Get overcome with excitement every day. Hey, I see you found shoes. Uh-oh, those are your town shoes.
No, my kids— these moms, they don't wear any town shoes.
Oh, those are old town shoes. All right, try the treehouse in the, um, creek.
I know, I remember now. I left my teens at the creek.
Okay, what do you think of your chicks?
Good.
They're still not out, huh? John just asked if he's got to do the chicks. I said yes. He doesn't like to do the chicks. Watch, I moved the chicks last night.
They're out of there!
Where'd you put them? Where'd you put— that's what we were gonna do last night, but you passed out.
Where did you put them?
In Lily's posse. Get in! They're not in here, my man.
I knew that. All right, I, I already knew that.
I think it's in the tack room. It's been a while. Is that it? No. So adult hens, you want to limit their food or they get too fat, they eat too much. Is it in the garden stall? That wouldn't make sense. It's not in the garden stall. And little chicks You want to feed them all they want to eat because they're growing. Is it in here? No, I don't think it's in here. No, that's full of wood. So we have to set up something separate to feed the chicks in. We've got a nifty little thing, but you can't seem to find it. Is that it? No, there it is, there it is, there it is, Gideon. Hey, the kids are calling me. They say they see a really big turtle. Mr. Bradley's already in.
I saw it digging, Papa. It was digging.
Yeah, it's a snapping turtle. Guys, don't put your hand down there.
It might be the same one that was up there.
You think? Yeah, maybe. Oh, that's really cool. All right, you guys leave it be after looking at it, okay? Don't get— don't get too up there, man. That thing will be called a snapping turtle. Snap, snap. Thank you, Gideon. He's putting food in the tray for the chicks. What are you doing? Oh, you gave that to them? Bless you. That's for the big birds. I have some little feed for— it's actually all chick starter, so it's not going to hurt anybody to get it. We just, we just want the chicks to get all they can eat, and the big ends have a ration. So the chicks—
here, here—
the chicks can come in here anytime they want and get the—
get their feed.
They'll find it. They're getting a little more lively. What you doing in there? You just chilling? Oh look, you got some chicks out, Lily! Do you see that?
The black ones are her chicks.
That's nice. All right, you getting the pasture animals?
Yep.
Wait, you only need one bucket for sea monsters? Are you sure? Okay. Oh, pepper, banana peels, some juice. Lettuce, kale stems, some, uh, old sweet potato skins.
You got a muzzle, you should ask.
You just want to— you don't want to go out there alone, do you? All right, I've got 35 minutes till cream separating. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and a half, 8, and 8 gallons.
I'm getting the snacks ready.
Okay, you look very nice.
Thank you.
Let's see your outfit. We got everything, Josiah?
Yep.
Let's do it. Oh, Moose has got his head stuck in the bucket. That makes me think, did we bring water for the lambs?
Nope.
Ah, all right, we gotta get these fat chicks out though. Is it a big gold cage fight in here? No, not too bad. All right. Whoa, whoa, whoops! Chick, chick, chick, chick, chick, chick, chick, chick! This is nice. More chickens on the job. Here, guys. We're back to water the ewes, but look, the chickens are having squabbles. Well, they're over it. They're figuring out who's boss. A lot of noise this morning, ladies. Guys, we gotta get this fence hot. This fence is not working for some reason. I'm going to trace it down, but first let's get water to the ewes and that bucket off of Moose's head.
We're going to help you.
He's happy to be free. All right, so that's another reason we want to hurry up and get water lines out here, cuz we can do an auto-waterer to them and Moose won't get his head stuck anymore. We ran out of parts, why we slowed down this week, and they're just coming in. We had to order some, but I believe they're all here now, so we can start on it next week. We still have a chicken squabble over here. I bet it's the leader of this pack and the leader of the pack that they're coming from. But that's another good reason for the guard goose. The guard goose has been down here breaking it up. Minimizing that stress. Let's figure out where this— it's the net. Why, why this isn't hidden like this? It's not hot right here. Did you find our problem already?
So it's down here.
I'm gonna see if it's not making this jump because it's on right there. Is it going through these alligator clips? It's not. Hmm. All right, I got it to work. I just wrapped the line around the handle 2 more times and it's going. Let's see if we can get the alligator clip to jump it. This is the line out to the animals. Okay, good, it's working now. Done with the chores out in the mountain. Let's check on these guys. We got some already finding dust baths. I'm sorry, I should have got you a dust bath in your brooder, I guess. We got some picking through the lettuce we gave them. Oh, how cool! Shoot, we've only got 20 minutes till I gotta leave. Let's check on this cream separating. Oh, Rebecca got my laptop back here, even the power cord. Hey, that was nice, you set up my bed for resting. That's right, Grandma. Hello, you ready to cream separate? Ah yes, because Becky and I gotta leave in 20 minutes.
I know. That's crazy.
Yeah, it's in good hands though, isn't it, Beck?
Yeah, right.
Goodbye, kids. Wish me well. I'm gonna take a little nap. All right, bye-bye, Mr. Brown. Bye-bye, Grandma. You make this possible. All right, we gotta go. Bye-bye, kiddos!
Bye!
Love you guys!
Bye!
Well, we are here, so I guess the next shot will be post-surgery. Maybe I'll talk crazy except for putting me to sleep and waking me up. Yeah, so if you're gonna talk crazy after surgery, it works better.
Okay, Justin, how are you feeling?
I remember they, they hooked me up with the So I leave, and I thought, okay, that's the medicine. I'm gonna fight this. It's like 5, 7, 10 minutes, and then they came back in. They're like, oh, here we are, we're gonna get your stuff now. There were moments I thought it was getting to me and I was about to go to sleep. I was gonna see how bad I could fight it. And they didn't even— they hadn't even given you the medicine. No, they hadn't even given it to me. Well, they come in and they say Oh, we're gonna give you a little something to make it easier or whatever. We shot that little thing in there. I probably didn't stand there for 10 minutes, 2 minutes. Now this time when they woke up, they were talking about movies. What'd they say? John Wick, and these are Keanu Reeves movies, okay, and the new Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. You know there's gonna be a new Bill and Ted's?
Yeah. I try to block that out of my memory, I guess.
But I doubt it's out yet, so—
How you feeling?
I'll have to watch something else.
Oh, that's what they were recommending you watch and you didn't trust them?
No, they weren't talking to me, I don't think. I piped in at the end. No, I said— No, you— I said, did y'all talk about movies? Because I just want to make sure I'm not crazy.
They did. Okay, you're talking a lot better.
Good.
You seem to be in much better spirits.
I'm a professional talker.
You're funny.
Stop it. That's what I do for a living, Beck.
Okay, how do you feel?
Good. Dizzy.
Okay, you want to put your seat back a little bit?
Mm-hmm. Okay. I even had the whereabouts to put my shirt back on. The button. The top button. You should see her face. They didn't violate me, Rebecca. They just undid one button so they could get a sensor in there.
Oh, okay.
Your face. You thought, oh, is this that Seinfeld episode where the dentist take their liberties?
Feeling well enough to—
You got my camera?
Yeah.
Well, it's been a couple hours. I've been resting back in the bed. I'm gonna go back to resting, just closing this out. Feeling pretty good, up and about. Just gonna rest. Just gonna get this, um, vlog up. Thank you guys for all your well wishes. Uh, tomorrow We're gonna give you a video even though we're not gonna vlog. We've got a video on how— stay with me, we're gonna— I'm telling you to stay with me. I gotta stay with this. I'm gonna tell you guys how to raise— well, how we raised 473 pounds of chicken in 58 days. You can scale that down, you could scale that up. Anyway, that's coming tomorrow. I gotta get off here. The pain is finally starting to kick in. I gotta get ice back on this thing.
