My Solution for Mineral Desperate Sheep

In this homestead vlog, Victor (Speaker A) and his family members—including Jeremy, Rebecca, Jonah, and several children—spend a morning fixing and improving a mineral feeder for their young sheep (named Nacho, Escalito, and others). The video opens with light‑hearted banter about shoes before moving to the core task: assembling a feeder using 2×4s, EMT straps, shims, and screws so the lambs can access minerals, salt, and kelp. While the feeder is being built, the family moves the sheep into a newly constructed paddock, using nets, a "sham" (likely a shepherd’s crook) and a makeshift “chickshaw” to guide the animals. They discuss the sheep’s age (around 6 weeks), feeding amounts, and the need for supplemental hay and mineral blocks. The vlog also shows other routine homestead chores: milking the cow Phyllis, adjusting a stanchion, and preparing for an upcoming Homesteaders of America event where the feeder will be demonstrated. Interspersed throughout are casual family moments—breakfast preparations, jokes about popcorn ceilings, and sharing seashell souvenirs—illustrating the collaborative, informal atmosphere of daily farm life. The video concludes with reflections on the day’s work, plans to train the sheep to use a bucket for treats, and anticipation of the upcoming event.

Hey, did you find your shoes? Huh? Okay, I'll believe it when I see it. What's behind your back?
Nothing.
Okay, no shoes. You need your Crocs or you need your, uh, rubber boots? Because they're due. Where?
Right there.
You're gonna wear those shoes?
Yeah.
Okay, I'm not gonna fight it. Or you could wear If you had the other cowboy boot—
I'm gonna wear this down.
Oh yeah, you want to wear those? They're water resistant. Yes or no?
With socks on.
Yep.
Here we go.
Yeah.
A watermelon.
Do you want to eat that? It's the last one, and then you don't have to take the bowl and lose the bowl.
Look.
All right, good boy. Let me put that back inside.
Eat the peanut butter.
How are you gonna eat the peanut butter? You don't got a fork or spoon. Thanks for getting my feed. Jonah's not here. Jonah! What we hope to get done today is the mineral feeder for the wrestlers. How are they used this morning? Good. Not only do our sheep need feed, water, a good shade shelter from the sun, they need minerals. Nacho and Escalito have been— well, I've been giving them kelp and salt, but I'd like to get them all 17. How's that peanut butter working out for you? Good. Okay, ready? All right, let's get these guys moving. They've only got 2 and a half more week-ish. They're already eating what they would— a normal sea monster would eat at 9 weeks old. They're 6-ish weeks. They're not even 6 weeks old. And the reason is, look, look how active these guys are. That's super good. They're eating a lot of grass, they're moving around, they're actually acting like chickens. We need to move, we're at the end of the rope. Let's move. They're hungry, so they're gonna go, they're gonna follow the chickshaw or the meatshaw, and we're gonna move them right here, keep going down the line. Curious bystanders. This is a bit of a nerve-wracking moment. Let's flip the shaw around.
Let's get their last distraction.
These guys aren't really going nuts for the feed over here. Before I put this back corner up, I want to get everybody this way at least. Look, pig board to the rescue! We did it! We've got this down.
Yeah.
Donald's getting out. You hanging in there, Mr. Brown?
What?
You hanging in there? You're being very patient. Thank you. It's not hitting that great. Well, 2.5, we'll take it since it's the shocker. Not 2 nets and it's dewy this morning. We could at least straighten up this corner, right, Jeremy?
Yeah, it's been on. It's on.
Whoa, that's working real good. All right, turn it off. I think that's working just fine. I don't think it needs any improvements. Okay, as you can see, that's working just fine. 2.5, plenty of juice. Ready? Just don't touch the black one.
Okay.
Buenos días, Luchador. You eating your— you eating your minerals? These guys need their minerals so bad. They'll go— I saw a video yesterday of a goat going to extreme heights and danger to get some minerals. They got kelp, kelp, so that means they can get in here. They maybe ate a little bit of salt. We got to put pieces of 2x4 where we're gonna put our EMT straps, like we need 4 4 to 6, because this has to sit further out so that we can actually open the door. Looks like you guys ate good in here. The cows have gotten in here and eaten a little bit of this, but sheep can go behind cows. And look, if there's not enough in there for them, we'll give them some hay. It's kind of our fail safe. All right, let's go perfect that thing. Can you carry all those boards right there? Maybe we need a bucket. We need a drill driver and some screws, little screws. Jonah says they're on the feed, but I think I saw them on the feed and said, oh, these need to go where they need to go.
They're not there.
Yeah, I moved them.
Here they are.
Oh, I didn't make it very far, did I?
Nope.
Here, we'll put it on here.
Oh, you gotta hold it by the handle.
Phyllis was bellowing this morning, so we thought bringing her closer to her calf would help. No, it's just making it worse.
Here, you hold this and I'm gonna fix that up. Okay, I have to put—
only got 30 minutes to milk or so. Jonah's gonna Switch some things around with the cows. I think I need him to do this part though. We're fixing the mineral feeder for the luchadors. We need to put a 2x4 on the other side of it. We need to put this on the other side to sit this far away. We're gonna put 6 of these. Let's do one right there. Yeah, that'll work. That'll work nicely. If I put that board in right there, I can screw that in while we wait on Jonah.
Oh, this is holding it.
Look, there you go.
Ready? Oh, bring some long screws. Those aren't going to do it. Those, those will do the EMT straps, but they won't do the, the shims. Shall we go back? Jonah might be busy. Should we go back and get some big screws? Yeah, I love working with you. Thank you for coming with me this morning. All right, this is what Jonah has done. It's probably smart. Got you in here. Here's your calf. Stop bellowing. It's a little less stressful. We've been separating the calf at night so we can get more milk in the morning. Calf has her all day, but I've noticed Phyllis starts bellowing when she first sees us in the morning. All right, we're back at it. 20 minutes till milking time. Sun's starting to come up and get hot. Let's do this. All right, we got our shims in. The question is, is our lid gonna work? Oh, oh. We can see what they need now. See what they've eaten, what they need. They've eaten a little salt, they've eaten a little bit of kelp, eating a good bit of BVC. Nice.
That's the third time. Thus—
Because Jonah put Phyllis in the stanchion this morning to calm her down, give her her calf, we flipped it. We did it backwards. Come on, everybody. Let's go. I gave us.
Papa.
These are the shark treats Grandma gave us.
Yay.
Huge breakfast.
What?
Where? The McNecklaces. Yeah. Huge breakfast of eggs, Swiss chard, and Come on, everybody, let's go!
Mama gave us—
Papa, these are the shark teeth Grandma gave us.
Yay! Huge breakfast. What?
Where are the necklaces?
Yeah, huge breakfast of eggs, Swiss chard, and avocado in a smoothie. Can you hand me my big camera there, please?
Just hold on. Oh man, I did all my—
what did I do with that card?
He might be in Big Jerry.
Oh, I bet it is.
Bye-bye.
Act like you're going away for a week. I know. All right, have fun. Lowe's, all kinds of places.
All kinds of places.
Oh, another big mess. Don't worry, we're not doing a living room renovation, are we, Rebecca? Rebecca's back. We have hired a professional painter. Actually, he took the popcorn off our ceiling, Rebecca. This was bubbled. I know. He spackled this. He's gonna paint the wall.
I'm coming in there. I'm like, why didn't we do this?
Do you want to come in there?
Why didn't we do this?
Because we like the 1980s.
I can't stand the popcorn ceiling. He's gonna be doing the rest of my house now because the kids' bedroom, the hallway, the guest room, and the bathroom all need it done.
Because you like how this looks, and he hasn't even painted the ceiling yet.
No, and we're gonna get a new ceiling fan, so I guess if you consider getting a new ceiling fan or a new light fixture, a renovation in the living room, then that's what we're doing.
Okay, all right.
But eventually we're gonna get a new couch. Eventually, when I find the couch that I want.
Yeah, I guess there's not too much work to be done in here.
And then that's it.
Okay.
And a rug and—
Where are we gonna watch TV? Okay. She keeps growing, right? I know, I know. She sneaks it. See how she sneaks it up on me?
Supper!
Pork burgers?
Uh, oh, is it pork?
I'm pretty sure it's pork.
It looked like beef, but maybe it's pork burgers. Pork burgers? And pickles.
One of our sausage— one of our sausage things burst on the way over here.
Okay, yeah.
And so that— I'm pretty sure that this was pork.
Okay, good.
Well, let me show— here's another one.
Mom's showing seashells from Florida. From Florida trip.
Look at that one! Isn't that pretty?
That's crazy.
Some of them are like— You got your ice cream.
She's got you something, Gideon, for everybody.
Yeah, we'll do Gideon's first. Oh, all right.
Oh, I want that one.
Here you go.
Look.
Nice to eat you.
Too big.
No, it'll fit you perfect. Something kind of pretty and palm and palm tree-ish.
Yeah.
One.
It's for Josiah. Surf the Wave. It's perfect for him, and it's the right color.
Yeah, he doesn't even have a black shirt, so that's good. And Johnna coming out to do some evening chores real quick. Look at this though, look at that. A little snapping turtle. That's a baby snapping turtle. Check it. Does that mean the mom's here somewhere? Should I pick this guy up and put him outside? There's a chance to survive. I think so. Just dropped 20 pounds of feed. Fed them 30 this morning. It was all gone. Just so you know, like a 9-week Cornish Cross, this many would be eating 40 pounds a day at 9 weeks. They're 6 weeks old, so they're getting too much exercise. I'm gonna, I'm gonna— yeah, this is too much. I'm gonna cut it down and see if that helps. Cut off that much. You guys still, you still have plenty, so we'll see if that slows you down a bit. How's everybody doing out here? Let's see what you got. BBC, you've almost eaten all of it, so you're getting in here. I see sheep hair. This is good, this is working out real good. Looks like we might get a rain event. We'll test it out in that. You guys like that? That's something the cows would never eat. Man, I love you. You're doing great. I'm gonna feed them apples in a bucket. We gotta start— we gotta train these guys. Escalito especially, he goes crazy when we go in there. So if we can train them to a bucket, starting with just leaving a treat in it. All right, Jonah, they're in. So that's perfect for moving them. Well, they're not too thrilled about this pasture right here. I guess this grass got too old. Uh, we're gonna put them up in here. That's why we're supplementing with hay. They have eaten a good bit of stuff in here though. All right, we got them a new paddock. I just love this net. In just a matter of 10-ish minutes, set up a whole new paddock for them. Have a run all the way back to the house. I guess the next few days we're gonna go through here, but basically trying to build the sheep shaw so that the sheep can have minerals and shade, so we can get them out and get them used to it before we go to Homesteaders of America next week, y'all. Next week. Okay, let them out. Are they gonna come running? Oh, you're gonna turn the fence on though? All right, go ahead. You know, while they're getting out, there was some confusion over the butchering of our 2 weathers. Weathers are castrated male lambs. They're intended for meat consumption. That's what happened. We bought those from Greg because we needed lamb right away. These guys are used. They're going to be mamas. We can all get attached to them. They're not going anywhere. They're going to breed with Nacho out there, and it's their babies that will raise up and probably sell some for feeders and then raise some of their babies for our meat consumption. Look, they went straight to the bramble, didn't they? Look, they're gonna clear you, Jonah. You're gonna get your climbing tree back. They're gonna clear those briars out of there. Look at that, love it!
Same, but they're— yeah, these are better.
So we're gonna have— next we're gonna have them mow this bank. Oh, and they're gonna love that section. Boom!
