New Tractors Everywhere! Farm Machinery Show 2022

In this informal vlog, Victor Justin Rhodes (Speaker A) and co‑host Beck attend the 2022 Farm Machinery Show at the Kentucky Fair Exposition Center, primarily focusing on the Kubota exhibit. The video captures their first‑day impressions of a massive agricultural trade show, contrasting it with their usual homesteading events. They interact with a diverse group of fans—hand‑shaking, hugging, and giving away free buckets—while signing copies of Rhodes’s upcoming book. The hosts tour a range of Kubota equipment, from track loaders and large tractors to compact BX23 models, highlighting features such as quick‑hitch connections, pedal‑controlled forward/reverse, and versatile implements. Personal anecdotes about recent land purchases, a 2,000‑acre farm, family life, and past experiences on the Great American Farm Tour are interwoven, providing a narrative of community, hard work, and the blend of small‑scale homesteading with commercial‑scale agriculture. The vlog also notes logistical hiccups like a temporary power outage, the use of a generator, and the challenges of navigating a crowded exhibition space. The content ends with reflections on travel fatigue, family updates, and a teaser for future videos.

No, we are not going to the theme park. Although, yes, it's the same entrance. It looks like we're going to the Kentucky Fair Exposition Center. Okay, so we're going to the farm machinery show with Kubota. We've got a few talks there. We're in Louisville. We've never been to anything like this. This is supposedly like— there's 19,000 parking spaces. I think we'll find one this morning, Beck.
I'm sure we will. It's basically like a fair that's permanent, guys.
It's not completely jammed out, but we are early.
Well, and it is the first day.
This whole nother level, guys. We're accustomed to homesteading events. This is a— this is a big ag event.
Very big ag, like conventional big ag.
Yeah, it'd be great to mix with these folks. Yeah, there's our first track loader sighting. The boys are excited. You're excited to see all the farm equipment? This is like a boy's dream. Okay, where's the orange? Just look for the orange. Hey, excited? You here to see us?
That's the only reason I'm here.
Okay, good. We got blue, we got red, green. Up, up! I see some orange coming around. There it is. Hey, there's our haymaking equipment right there.
No, it's not. It's a little—
You want to make some hay? There's some round bale. We have arrived. It's a very good looking booth. Oh my, very good display. Look at that, super pro. We're signing book plates for our book.
This booth though—
is booth even what you call this? This is crazy, Beck. I hope our people come. It's not like I thought. I thought we, uh, we'd be talking and like people passing by, so I'm actually relieved of that. Like this booth though, I know, I'm imagining like a trade— I don't know what I was thinking. Like, yeah, you have to have room for tractors.
I know, but like I'm thinking like in the corner. You're like in the middle of the booth.
I am, yes. Is that so?
Ah, you get yourself into these messes, man.
I know, why do I do this? I live like this. I get out of one mess and get in another one. We're talking about being nervous about speaking in front of the wonderful Kubota staff, in front of, uh, farmers. I know, and hopefully fans.
It's a different crowd. Very different crowd.
I'll hug every fan that comes. We got our hugs! First hugs! My hands are a little cold.
Yay!
Where'd y'all come from? Uh, a couple counties down, just south of Lexington. Nice.
Boiko, Kentucky.
Cool. Hey, how are y'all doing? Good, thank you. Big hugs! Thanks for coming. Yeah, you guys are getting free buckets. Yeah.
Okay, heck yeah.
Did you buy the bucket?
Hey, I I know y'all. Oh yeah, we came to see you. Where are you speaking at?
Uh, right about it, right around there. There's my booth. You here for us? Yes, yes, I do hugs. All right, hugs or fist bumps? Yeah, either one. Can I get a picture? Oh heck yeah, come on down. You guys have been so patient. You want to be in the vlog? What's your names?
Joshua, Chance.
Where are you from?
Just south of Birmingham.
Birmingham. What's your name? Jeremy Chance. Okay, you guys hug? Sure. Or fist pump?
We'll fist bump.
Either one, it doesn't matter. All right, he's got to change his hat for the picture.
But I have not been in a chicken coop for 24 hours.
I haven't done that one.
I got you beat on that one, huh? Oh, I gotta get the butterfly farmer. They'll be on the vlog. Fist bump. This is nice. Oh, I should know, you're the Roots and Refuge people. This your buddy?
Yeah, that's my sister.
Okay, thanks for coming. See little Henry poking his head through. What about you, buddy? Dwayne, how are you? Yeah, how are y'all?
We're from about an hour north of here, a little town called Heltonville, Indiana. All right, you're presenting here? No, I shouldn't be a presenter, I'm just a— just a hearer.
Ah, okay.
But, uh, about a year ago this Friday we Bought 6 acres and, uh, have just jumped in.
Probably too deep, actually.
Yeah, I like the hat. You're representing. Y'all have a Kubota? We got one almost exactly like the one over there. Yeah, those are nice right there. Where are you from?
I'm from Kentucky.
Western Kentucky. We got a big family here. How many we got?
How many at this point?
We're going to have to do a group hug. Group hug.
How are you?
Good to meet you, Justin. Come here, guys.
Oh, Jackson's gonna hide.
You not only have a homestead, you actually have a big farm. Yeah, 2,000 acres.
Yeah, it's like, you know, double life.
Where is this double life?
Where are we at, boys?
As if you weren't busy enough with the 2,000-acre farm, you got to go on Homestead too?
Yeah, well, and yeah, my wife does a lot of that.
She gets credit, and, uh, she's converted me, I guess. Okay. Yeah, so you have interest in this show?
Yeah.
For the big machines. Yeah. So it's— yeah, what's the biggest machine you have? Do you have one that big? We've got one of those. No, you got the, the combine. We got a combine. Yeah. Wow. Okay.
Yeah, so that guy over there in the Iowa State hat, that's it.
It's— ah, that's him. Okay, cool.
But we get to run it. So yeah.
Okay.
So yeah, you go from that to, you know, butchering chickens at night.
So it's crazy. Y'all are not afraid of a little hard work. I'm telling you, but you're growing up doing hard things, right? They're made to do hard things. That's the best thing for you. Struggle. You're going to be little— well, you're going to be big mighty men one day. We just met everybody, did our talk, and actually the power went out. We are on generator lights, I guess. So we're going to take a break, eat lunch, and then hopefully shoot some of what's here. Look at these columns though. Power came back on. We've been eating lunch in this exhibitor room. How was lunch? Good. Cool thing about having a security system is I can check on the animals and make sure all the farm animals are in. Yeah, I see Stud Muffin laying down. Johnny, you check it and see if the sheep are there and everything. Do you guys know your way around this area already?
Yeah.
Okay, you have to show us. But first, the Kubota Homestead scale tractors. Backward and forward pedal. Nice. I like the quick connects on these buckets. Ours have that and it makes all the difference in the world because you can have a bucket, a pallet loader, a hay fork.
This is a quick hitch.
Yeah, these are handy too.
Drive back and then—
yeah, for quickly hooking up implements. Here it is in use. So you can quickly attach this and move it. I won't act like I know what that is. Might be a— it might be a tiller. You into the tractor show? I mean, it's interesting. Can you tell us which tractor is the most popular for homesteaders?
Uh, for homesteaders? No, I can't. Most popular tractor we have, a little BX23. It's our subcompact tractor.
Let's go look at it.
It's right here behind these folks. Affordable and versatile. It's not scary, it's not intimidating. Yeah, so, uh, lots of options, lots of things you can do with this.
Get on there, uh, John. Let's see the scale and stuff. Yeah, because you have an implement hooked up, it's got a mowing blade, and it has right now a scrape.
Well, you can put a loader, but it could be anything. You can put a loader on the front, you can put a backhoe on the back of it. So yeah, very versatile.
Nice.
Uh, I see where you go. I see where you go, to the backhoe. Man, what you could do with one of these, huh? What's the first thing you would do?
Dig a hole.
What's the first thing you would do?
Dig a hole.
What kind of hole?
I don't know.
What for?
Nothing.
I'm all about multi-purpose everything. And this makes it so full of multi-purpose. You can do anything with this. I got a left.
Yeah, I mean a small.
No, we just add the large or the extra large. So now we have the left. Everybody's got their left. It's good. I kind of need— I kind of need a pair of gloves. That'll go good in my apron. Okay, now we got to go find the other Kubota booth and get the other glove. There are monster trucks. And there are monster tractors apparently. Look at that track. How are y'all? Good. How's everybody? Good. You having a good time? Yeah.
How about you?
You like these big tractors?
Oh, they're so cool.
Have you been in this tractor? Oh, did we just cut you? We just snaked you, didn't we? There are shiny tractors everywhere. Oystering. Crazy. Kubota's got a mowing line. Hey, you want to do all the mowing standing up?
I think it could be potentially cool.
I like these tires on this zero turn. I would like that for the pasture because it's, uh, minimum damage to the sod. You like this cab, Josiah? Yeah, it's going to stay warm. This is like— it's like the two-seater version of the one we have, the diesel. Game changer because you can have diesel on farm, easier than you can have gas on farm.
Mama said she would feel more comfortable with getting one of these because you couldn't run anybody over.
Track loader, but mini version. He wants a track loader so bad, but it's not him I'm worried about, it's him— it's Gideon or somebody running behind you. That's a nice piece of equipment there. Talk about a multi-purpose machine. I need a large. This is a good idea, by the way. It's been to both booths now. And now we have gloves.
Okay, perfect. Large.
Everybody's got gloves. No, 5.
5 years ago, I was just—
you came to our house 2017 on the Great American Farm Tour.
The Great American Farm Tour documentary movie, full-on movie that these guys made. They drove a bus, yeah, down our creek crossing.
That's right. That made— you know that made the movie, right? Yes, it did, because I wasn't sure if that bus was going across the creek. It was impressive. She wasn't either.
I had about had a heart attack going down into it.
They put a lot of time and money into rebuilding this entire bus. I mean, like, what, 6 months worth of work? Yeah, we weren't sure if it was going to survive our driveway.
That would have been something because we had already did all of America pretty much. That would have been funny.
Yeah, stuck in Oklahoma, stranded, can't make it back.
Oh well, that's where we're gonna settle, Oklahoma. It was Arms Family Homestead. We stayed there. At the end of the tour. You remember crossing that creek in the bus the weekend after Thanksgiving?
Yes, I remember.
Ian Hughes with his son, little homestead there. Uh, yeah, we'll never forget.
We'll never forget the end of that, the end of that, uh, that river crossing video.
Yeah, hilarious. And we'll never forget that all the people across America who hosted us.
Yes.
And helped make it possible, including Daniel Stamets are there in one area and then we move them on and that area gets time to rest and we freed up our other arm for what? I don't know, pick our nose, make a vlog. Yeah, hold the camera, make the vlog, hold it, hold a chandler. Just wrapped up the show. We're worn out. We are— look at this highway, airplanes. How does a country boy go to sleep at night in all this? He just turns over and goes to sleep.
I was like, oh, airplane.
Oh, it bothers you now? It does. Jonah likes to— Jonah likes to sleep with a fan, but he's figured out, like, for the white noise, but he's figured out— what have you figured out?
That planes make loud noise.
Now you don't need a fan.
I know, you can just I know, hotel system.
She's running now. What's wrong? What are you gonna do, flop down a flying squirrel into the bed? Let's see it. Fly squirrel into the bed. We just got home. We gotta show you a shot of these kids because this is definitely the first time they've been away from Jonah and Josiah this long. Yeah, they're gonna be excited.
Hi, Papa!
Hey, do I get a hug? Yay, yay, yay! Big man on the farm. How'd it go?
Good.
Josiah, the bolts came. Your bolts are here for your go-kart. I don't see my book. My book is supposed to— it's supposedly shipping. That's, that's my book.
I wonder—
there are people getting my book. I haven't even seen it yet. Some of you guys are getting my book already, but it's officially shipping March 1st. Just had dinner. Grandma came through for us. It appears that Luke came through for us as well. He's given me a text with a rundown. Grandma says he did good. How'd he do, Lily?
Good.
The farm sitter? Good. You did good. I'm very impressed.
Henry! Woo!
Standing up. He is happy to be out of the car and crawling around. Watch, watch. Watch, let him stand. You can do it, you can do it!
There he goes, there he goes!
Mama got her veggie starts. Onions, lettuce, and what's that one? That one's, uh, broccoli. Broccoli. Where you going to put all that?
In the greenhouse until we get our beds.
Are you a little— yeah. Okay, I'll ask you in the daylight after you haven't driven all day.
I'm so tired also.
It's been a long day. Let's open your presents.
Woo!
We got everybody— I think it's the same, right? So there's no fighting over it. Okay, well, no fighting. The Kubota tractor.
Can I have the one with the horses? Oh, Paw Patrol!
Okay, okay.
Woo!
That worked out. Chance. Okay, that's why I said give them the same thing.
I probably didn't have the same thing.
What are you gonna do? Okay, all right, enjoy, guys. You did good holding down the homestead.
