Victor Justin Rhodes built a gravity-fed watering system for his chickens that needs no heater or electricity. Water flows downhill from his pond through a buried line, gets filtered, and fills an Everflow waterer with nipple outlets. The excess drains back to a creek, and it works reliably at 20 degrees.
It's 20 degrees outside and we got water for our chickens. Here's the trick: no heater required. That's not hooked up to our well. Our homestead is strategically placed downhill from water sources. We've buried a water line. We're climbing this hill. We're elevated probably, I'd say, 50 feet. Up here at the pond, we got our line going in with a filter on it immersed in the pond. It's drawing less than the pond is actually giving, so we're not draining our pond. We got a water line coming down into the Everflow. It fills it up. They can drink from these nipples. We have a drain valve to get gravity-powered again on the way out, and the drain line goes back down to the creek where the water was going anyway.
If I had to start my Homestead all over again, it could only pick one animal…
