Nook & Cranny Farming (VLOG)

A family roasts beef bones for broth, moves sheep to free up pasture for cows, and worries about having enough grass to feed livestock through Christmas. They're inspired by Nourishing Traditions to do a 48-hour broth fast and freeze meals in cubes for travel and winter.

Rebecca had a big day traveling yesterday. I got her a treat: sausage, egg, and cheese, a little salsa on it, sauerkraut, bagel, raspberries, and if that ain't enough, our homegrown yogurt with blueberry sauce. Hey, you tired traveler. There you go. Kids ate. This was full. That's gone after breakfast. That's too much honey. Okay, no more tea in the morning if you're gonna eat that much honey. I may need to see what y'all are putting in your ogre yogurt that you aren't even finishing. Gotta make sure Rebecca can call me if she needs to. Here's your radio if you need me. I finally finished the He-Man, uh, broth bones. Yes! Something like 3 weeks later. Feels really good to have him all in the freezer as broth. Starting on old bones. Who knows who this is? This is March 2024. Dude, that's almost— is that a year and a half? That's why we're going to start doing bones all at once. I need you to go, uh, put hay in the chicken posse upstairs. And hey, in these pockets, I just been inside sipping tea while my kids do it all.
What?
Of course not. Come on. Happy day. Welcome to another vlog, a day in the life of a bunch of health nuts growing our own food, because you can't buy food like this. We need to get these sheep moved out. We have nook and cranny grazing across the creek. We need to get these sheep off this premium pasture, make our paddock smaller for our cows because grass is slowing significantly and we're not going to have enough grass to get us to Christmas, which is what we need to be able to go through the winter with the amount of hay we have bought. So you guys ready to go on some bramble? Got some grass-bramble combination. We're going to take them, take them up to Big Daddy's We've just had some grass be growing there all season. They're gonna love it. They love that kind of stuff. And maybe we can put you in a 3-day paddock. Yeah, yeah, it has a, um, it has a bum hoof. I looked at it and trimmed it. It'll take a minute. Thank you for telling me though. You guys done milking? I can take it. That's it? Hopefully there's some in here. Oh good. Wow, how do you guys get so much? Okay, okay, show me. Oh my gosh, look at this muscle man! Good job. That's really happy. All right, that's an interesting key. The original's gone, so It's a jungle up here. Hey, Shae, should we mow Big Daddy's lawn first with the— hey, let's set up in here. It needs to be mowed. We're about to mow it. Well, why don't we mow a sheep first? It's free food. Let's do it. So much food up here. Wow, we gotta knock out that kudzu. We got all that, we got behind Big Daddies, we got in front of Big Daddies. I want to mow that so bad with the sheep, but Josiah just made a point. We need to kill pigs tomorrow, not move sheep. So then they need a multi-day paddock. That's okay, this time of year grass is slowing down. We could probably do half a week, week max. Do you understand what I'm saying though? This is free food for the sheep and we don't really have enough food on the farm. You think we have enough food to get us to Christmas? What? This buys us 2 days if we graze his yard. Okay, maybe it's not worth it. It's just, it's not that long. We're busy with the sheep. I'm fasting. Okay. All right, Johnny, want to move the— want to make the— put the sheep on the lawn? It needs mowed. They need to go in here anyway. Okay, more broth we're gonna make. The boys are putting up the net. We're gonna make more broth. I want to save these as marrow bones to cook them, I don't know, when I'm having steak or something. So we need more bones. So let's do these lamb bones too. I think it'll be okay to mix them. Set a timer for an hour. Let's check on the beautiful one. Gentlemen, that is your most important thing. You are the sir, you are the giver, she is the receiver. That's the natural dynamic and relationship for you Bible readers. Men, you are the lover. And she is the beloved. Let's go check on her. Hey, how you doing?
Good.
You rest, baby. Have you gotten your sun in your eyes? Oh good. A couple of things after consulting with Rebecca and then the Nourishing Traditions broth book over the weekend, I've been going 48 hours on the broth. I only need to go max 24, so that's going to cut down on my time of flipping this broth. Also, these, these beef bones— talking with Rebecca, she had a good idea she got from Tara, Slow Down Farmstead. We're gonna go ahead and roast these, then we'll dig the marrow out, freeze the marrow, and then we'll have the bones for making the broth. That's super efficient, also going to save us some time. And the broth and the marrow will be ready when I'm ready for it in the steak. I don't have to roast the bones. And then what are you going to do with the bones after that? I'm going to be done brothing, so this is perfect. Boys are ready. Shoot, what time is it? Okay, I gotta start the soup by 10. I could actually start it now. Are they not following all falfa? We haven't tried that yet. They just go anywhere you want without falfa. It's a tricky move. They're way down here. They've got to go all the way. Somehow they're gonna have to go. Somehow you're gonna have to get them through the creek. Josiah, Jonah, let Josiah lead. Let Josiah lead them. Lead them, Josiah. They don't like to cross the creek. They don't like to cross the bridge. If we get most of them over there, they'll all go over. Feels good to get the sheep on that little nook and cranny. It's like, um, sheep are amazing for that. Just lead them anywhere and take advantage of these little nooks and crannies so we can slow the cows down and reserve this pasture. Freezing butter. We have an excess of butter. I couldn't be more excited. We have this much for eating. That's plenty for a while, so that means we keep the stockpile some butter. Broth finished, cold, ready to go in the Super Cubes. That's gonna have to wait. I'm excited. I'm gonna turn this barbecue pork, this pork roast, into a delicious farm-based soup. Think after 20 days of fasting I would be over this, over cooking. I'm getting more and more excited about it. This is the perfect case of some of this fat we've skinned off Brock. We use it as our cooking oil.
The meat was a little tough yesterday.
This is pizza sauce. That's probably too much of a different Yeah, just put it in there. Salsa is not a stretch. Well, it is. It is probably a stretch. This is a— this is a, um, yeah, uh, yeah, all of it. Plain tomato sauce will do. Just dumped what we had in chicken broth. Dump what we have in tomato sauce. I think I'm a better cook, but I'm so hungry. You know, did you finish this? Yep. Good deal. All right, take it over to be washed. Come do a round of dishes, buddy. One more thing. So thankful we put in the work. And now here are the beans. Here we are in August, we're burnt out, and our food's here.
It's here.
Cut that for me. Yum. I don't want to lose that liquid. And then we can chunk it up and put it in a Ziploc bag and just keep adding marrow to it as we go. This is going to be an excellent broth. We have a mix of knuckles, bone marrow, maybe some ribs, some lamb. Just covering the bones. Been making another mistake. I haven't been putting enough apple cider vinegar. You could do vinegar. We just do apple cider vinegar. Draws out the nutrients. Half a cup. I've been doing just a splash, which ain't nearly a half a cup. Bring this to a simmer. We're going to watch it as to not boil it. Rebecca, we don't ever want the broth to boil, do we? No.
Okay.
How you feeling?
I feel fine.
I'm just tired.
In a minute, in a little bit, and we'll go outside. We're going to go lay in the sun. Throwing in some oat old rice. Leftover rice. It has a little zucchini in it. That's fine too. Put some homemade sour cream on top of this. Oh, I got you a good lunch. Oh my gosh, I'm just telling myself we're gonna end up freezing some of this because I'm not eating We're gonna end up freezing so many meals. We're gonna be ready to travel, ready to be sick, ready to be tired. Take these meals on the Sabbath. You guys really taught me that. Here you go, Tara. What do you think?
Yum.
I wanna see you bite that. How you feeling? You feeling rested? Yeah, I feel great. Let's do it.
I'm enjoying my—
I put some salt on it—
day off because I need it.
Well deserved. I'm gonna live vicariously through you.
Sorry, it's gotta cool down.
The anticipation builds.
I don't want to burn my tongue. I already have like a cut on it.
It's not worth it. With some sour cream in that. Would you have it again? I can't eat, so I don't know. I'm making it. I need some feedback here.
It's delicious. Is it? It's delicious.
Yeah, it's good.
It's creamy.
Really a perfect farm food. Jonah's getting seconds. I have one. They don't like soup, but they like this soup. Gideon got seconds. Lily, you gonna get seconds? Josiah, you gonna get seconds? Making supper now.
Chicken curry. Got a little helper.
Well, Gideon and I made y'all a nice coconut curry. So far I've gotten compliments. Let's see if I did better than the soup. She won't admit when I—
it's like—
now that's, that's what, that's the face I'm looking for. I didn't see that face with the soup. Give me that face again.
Oh yeah, two thumbs up. Okay, four thumbs up. All right, I got my toes up too.
Now question, we got soup and super cubes, and we Would you eat that?
Yeah.
I pulled it up so it's fat. I think so. Alright, pulled some fat out, maybe that'll make it work. I'm living through you, babe.
