NOT what I Wanted To Hear from the Doctor

Justin Rhodes shares a doctor's visit that found low-level systemic inflammation around his heart and vascular system, prompting further testing. Between farm work with his kids and crew, he discusses possible causes like infection, diet, and exercise, and announces a shift to intermittent fasting.

Good morning!
He's my little veggie. He's in his little veggie outfit.
Papa, where are my boots?
Oh my goodness, right there. Good job. Look at that, folks, they were right there. You're growing up, Mr. Brown. I feel like Jonah's way ahead of us, gotten out there and doing chores. I feel like he's even taking a skim bucket down. This is not good. He's gonna get all her plants. Come on. Didn't look like he tore them up too bad. His wings are clipped. We might have to do something about that guy. What's going off on here? Something wrong? Wow, sounds terrible. See how this one has a smooth, regular friction, and then this one stuck? Cool. It's stuck. It's real loose, and then it's real hard. That's probably not right. Try it now. What happened? You got— you parked it here, you took the battery out.
I parked it there.
Was there something wrong with it then?
Yeah, I was— you know, we were driving and that stopped.
All right, give it a try. Ah, all right, we got Jonah here now. I guess we're going to continue because apparently he did all the chores, including moving the sea monsters out. Jonah seems to think there's a rock caught in it. Do you guys know how to get these wheels off to look?
Yeah, uh, we don't take the wheels off. We do take the gear off.
We've got it opened up now. Examining the gears.
I need to take this wheel off.
What were you guys expecting to see?
I was expecting you to find a rock, but I knew—
Yeah, no. All right, go ahead, Josiah. Josiah's gonna hold this in. That little thing goes all the way through.
Yeah.
Are you able to hold it, Josiah?
Yeah.
Two Leathermans aren't gonna do it. They can't grip it quite tight enough. I'm happy that Jonah did the chores, but he kind of— he kind of took the content from this morning. We were going to move the meat chickens out together. Maybe we could start connecting our Everflow waterer. Could we lessen our chores in the breakfast posse?
Like, I got a blood blister.
Yeah, the Leatherman came off and pinched you, didn't it? Just hang on to your grip. Okay, here we go, Gideon. Oh, you got it! I've been, uh, setting up the camera and they got it. Yeah, just— you guys did it and you didn't even know it. Gideon's been doing this. Okay, you gonna pull that off? Go ahead. I don't know if that's how it works. I guess not.
There, Junior got it.
Now we got it off. Whoa, was that side even good? That sounds clicky. And this side didn't even spin, right? Are they both supposed to spin? Uh-huh, it looks like it because they both got motors.
I had to replace that motor.
You had to replace that motor? Yeah, which one?
That one that you're working on.
The one that's bad already again. And that sounds terrible. They're both— something's wrong with them. That one's not spinning and this one sounds awful. All right, hit the gas, Jonah.
Grandma has a gearbox up at her house.
She does? Well, let's go to Grandma's. We got to get Rosie the guard goose and we'll get a gearbox. The sea monsters are a little over 3 weeks old now. We got them out into the field. That's a normal age. We pushed it. We went too early. Well, it's still too cold and we lost a lot, but we still got to get them the guard goose, so we got to go to Grandma's. Oh shoot, I need to get that over to the garden. We watered all these squash washing pumpkins yesterday. I think it helped. We got some plants that are doing good, some others with some yellowing and maybe some concern, but actually for the most part we might be doing all right right here. Our potatoes are jamming. That's anticlimactic. Our onions are doing great too. I don't see a hose going out there, so that must not be connected. Nope, not connected yet. Attached to our Everflow water line supply. Oh, now that's running from the pond. We can't have that. Hopefully this will reach. Plug it in right here, bro. Yeah, thanks. Yay, it's working!
There's so many.
I know, right? Some of them are this high on you. It's gonna be a good potato harvest. We still have to spot— stop our water coming down from our pond. This has got to shut off. I think we'll use that. Okay, so we're going to take this. Oh, hopefully.
Uh-huh.
You ready? I'm going to let go of this and we're going to run out of here.
Okay, okay, ready?
Uh-huh. Go! Now I have this female quick connect on here. I don't have a male adapter. There we go, I can turn that off now. Nice. All right, good. Let's get out here before this water sprinkler hits us.
What's going on?
Are you serious? These poor sea monsters can't catch a break. Wow, it just flew off. Shoot, it's getting that one. There it goes. That, that crow's huge. It's up on the tree there. How are we gonna go? Because that crow's just gonna come right back and finish this guy off.
I'll stay here.
Okay, you'll be the scarecrow?
Yeah.
Okay, there he— he flew, he flew off. You want to come now? You think there'll be more? Okay. Boy, opportunist, man. We didn't even put them out 30 minutes ago. Rosie, we need you, honey. She's scared, but she likes it over there. They're her babies. It's been a hard batch to keep alive. All right, here we go, Rosie. Hopefully that's all the difference. We're almost to the stage where these chickens are too big. Right there. Yeah, that one, that one got beat up real good. It's right there in front of the wheel. Yeah, see it? I think Rosie will be a deterrent. Let's just see. Oh look, one thing Joe reminded me of at Premier One, not to hook there if I'm gonna have to hook on the net. I didn't know this necessarily. Look right there, that's the main conductor of electricity in the net. But it's even better, you can hook right there. That's the best, and we can here. So there we go. We're back at G-Mall's because we forgot the gear. They broke it. They broke another gear, the gear thing on the cart. This is the original gear, and in here goes the motor with the electric motor. Okay, so we put the We took— I bought a whole assembly, so then we took— oh, you know, this is still good. Yeah, now we gotta just pull this old gearbox out and put the— replace it with the other old one that works. You know how to switch the gearbox out? Yeah, uh, we pulled out the old gear and sure enough, hopefully that was the problem.
Yeah, it was.
This is all jacked right there.
I'm gonna keep this because I'm gonna—
we've put the other— but hey, before we put the wheel— other wheel on We should test it. We should already tested it. Go ahead and test it, Gideon. Oh, it's working! We did it! High five!
Gobble gobble!
Take this star over to the people barn.
Okay.
For Randolph to put on the wall. Here's the real thing. Good job bringing the star. Lily set it right there on the concrete for Randolph. We'll put this flag, or the star, right up there, right above the— what is that, an awning or something? Did I show you guys the moved flag? I mean, we spun the flag back around this way, and that looks good because most people, most people are going to see it from right here first. That looks so good in there.
Well, look, it doesn't seem weird to see it from here, Papa.
Okay.
It like seems right.
Okay, it even seems right from over there, huh? Yeah. Okay. American flag should happen today. How's the beautiful one?
Good, we're doing good.
And how's Henry?
He's always good.
Is he ready for an adventure? You still going with me?
Mm-hmm.
Got a doctor's appointment today. There is the weirdest egg I think I've ever seen. It's little, it's long, and narrow. Crazy! We wrapped up our morning. I actually ended up going to the doctor. I mean, it was planned. We had an appointment. We are at the red light on our way to the doctor. Uh, what do you think she's gonna say, Beck? It's blood result day. My cholesterol is gonna be high.
Your cholesterol is gonna be high. It's gonna be interesting to see what she says.
Vitamin D is probably gonna be low coming out of the winter.
You had some inflammation, so I'm interested to see what she says about that. It wasn't crazy high inflammation, but it was low-level inflammation.
I say my cholesterol is going to be high because I eat a lot of meat. This is what they did while we were gone or worked on. This is cool. This is your Jeep into a—
what, what were you saying, Lily?
I like it. You can see out the front. You got this. Look at this, it's a dog carrier. You put Teddy or a dog in there?
Yeah, I'm gonna be the doggy.
Oh, you're gonna be the dog, so you put Lily in there. Okay. And then just like Okay. Oh, is that hitting right there, the wheel?
No, we already checked.
Okay. Oh wow, look, he's got cardboard box. It looks like a box truck on his, on his electric truck there. What have you been doing, Jonah?
Building furniture for the farm.
Okay, I believe Arun and Jonah are putting together furniture. Hey, where's Randolph? He's not here. I see his truck. Oh, there he is. He's messing with the fiberglass. I wanted to see how Randolph was doing this anyway. He's gotten these frames. These are frames that you can make custom size, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, you can cut them what you want, and they hold these fiberglass insulation And you're putting it under the flag so people can't see that part. Yep, this is good. Now you know my secret. Yep. Oh my word, takes a disaster to clean it up, doesn't it, Arun? Oh yeah. What have you been doing? Building all the furniture. We finished the chair, now finishing the couch. Nice. We should have 50 chairs in here now, but it's just showing you how spacey it is. There's still going to be a lot of room. You guys are building these tables, then I think we're done. Oh, I'll show them what it looks like. Here's the table, what it's gonna look like. It's gonna— it's gonna be nice. Look at this, it worked! Who did this? You got a Pit Boss cover for my electronics. It worked! Yeah, that thing was just getting terrible dusty. Okay, thank you. Last 20 years. This is our electronics. This is the, uh, the projector and the sound board. Rebecca's over here now giving her design input.
The rest of the 3 tables here. Okay, so you're gonna do the tables over here?
So we'll do one table here, and then we'll have a space to—
okay, yeah, you gotta go upstairs, and then we'll just do the rest of the tables going that way.
Okay, and chairs just like that. Yeah. Okay, so it didn't catch you. How's the construction going?
We turn it into a cool car.
Okay, that's the fun, right? Building.
Yeah.
Okay, so it's just a cool car now. What makes it cool? The slanted— yeah, it looks Kind of like a Tesla truck.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay, about my doctor visit, it's not what we wanted to hear. I knew I had inflammation, didn't know I had inflammation surrounding my heart, or is it vascular system? Long story short, further testing.
Yeah, I mean, it's not the end of the world. I mean, we're just— it's just something that needs our attention, and that's what we're gonna do.
I have so much inflammation, really.
Well, you have low-lying inflammation which is causing problems within your body.
Yeah.
And so because of that, I mean, we're now gonna try to find the root cause of the inflammation.
Well, is it Lyme disease?
Is it a dental infection?
Is it a gut infection? From the tooth work I've been doing.
So we're gonna—
Could it be lack of exercise? I threw that out there.
I don't know if it is.
I mean, I exercise on the farm, but I haven't ran in like 10 years and I used to be a crazy runner. My heartbeat was 44 beats a minute, so I still have some advantage there.
Justin is now seeing my doctor in Nashville. We switched over to her and she got all of Justin's previous medical files, and so this is just like— she ordered an extensive panel and I'm really glad she did.
And could it be that I haven't been as dedicated to my diet? Since Christmas, basically. I don't know, could— so more like honey and, and, uh, I don't think that—
no, I don't think that that's the root cause. I think that there's a root there. I think you have some sort of infection or something that is causing you to have inflammation. It's not like crazy high, but it's higher than it should be. Like, I had that same test done and my—
it was high enough that she called us back in.
Yeah, my, my inflammation was really low. So, um, we didn't have to do any further testing. It's hard to hear that there's a problem, but I'm also really happy with my doctor. She's super great. She is very— she's a conser— she's very conservative in that she wants to turn over every stone, which I really appreciate. I would rather catch something early than to deal with it later.
One of the things I asked is, would fasting help with inflammation? Yeah, sure. I already had this book. I haven't got around to it necessarily, but there we go. We already have a resource. We're already on it. Starting the day with an OMAD fast, 1 meal a day. So I'm going strong. 12 o'clock, got more, what, 4 and a half more hours, and then I can eat and do that. And in the past, I feel like some, some of my best times have been when I've fasted for keeping weight under control, for Feeling better, thinking more clearly. I was inside doing some office work and that chicken is pecking at our veggies. Watch her, watch her! It's the golden one right there, going in the coop. No more eating mom's veggies. It wasn't veggies, it's flowers. This isn't going to work unless we do this and keep them off of it and maybe move the rooster to the other flock. I don't think these ladies will be able to jump up there without their wings. That right there is what I've been working on. It's a beginner's guide to keeping chickens. I'm gonna post that video tomorrow. I think it's basically going to be a companion for my talk this weekend at the, uh, Grow Networks Summit this weekend, guys. Free, free to you guys online. Don't have to go anywhere. I'll leave the link for that in the description. Where are you going? I came out here to get a shot of you.
Do it playing this?
Yeah, he was playing the ukulele right there on top of the cardboard. I thought it looked neat. Are you playing to Gideon or the chickens or for yourself?
Myself.
I like it. Let's hear it.
Yeah, that singing is horrible.
That's not bad. I like it. Our video tomorrow can be kind of how we set this up because my Summit talk with Marjorie is about how to keep 6 chickens. So if you're going to keep 6 chickens and she wants to do a static run, which is this, we'll talk about that, how this is done. Yeah, we've got all these chicks that need to go out. Well, I see they need water, so I'll do that now. I'll go ahead and take this out. That's just dry and small. Let's, uh, let's get them this bigger waterer. There's your water, even though it's only for one more day. Need a little more food too, but, uh, there you go. Now's the time to get started with chickens. I want to help you guys out. Let's do a video, put it up on the YouTube channel free tomorrow, and then let's, let's do that Q&A summit this Sunday, totally free, no membership, no nothing. Q&A. What? We'll have this video. We'll have a brief talk on Sunday. And then if you have any questions, ask me that on Sunday. It's at 6 PM Eastern. That office section, how do I make that interesting for you guys? Like emailing back and forth with Joel Salatin. He's coming here middle of July to shoot a master class for Abundance Plus. To be in Rooted, our TV show on Abundance Plus. Like how do I make that— like that's so exciting. I don't know if I have to. Like, that's exciting. Joel Salatin coming here, a master class, to be in our TV show Rooted. Yeah, that's exciting. Josiah came and got me. Polly is in with the cows. That's bad because we're, one, weaning Polly, but two, she's a heifer and could be coming in heat, meaning she would be getting bred, and that's bad because she's too young. Randolph being the star. Jonah has set up the furniture. You guys got all the furniture done?
Yep.
This is so legit. Uh-huh. Holy crud. Nice.
We have another American flag.
Oh yeah, yeah. We have that one. That one. And then the North Carolina. That's patriotic right there. Let me see this table you've set up. I want to see the table.
Boom.
That is cool. You put a jar there for flowers. This is nice. Boom, he's got the star on! Oh, so good. Well, Josiah, Will, a family friend is here. See, that's what I was afraid of. Stud muffin's following her around, partly because she's new, but you wouldn't want her to even be attempted to be bred. All right. Good, that works. It's nice and cool with this silvo pasture, a few trees throughout. Thanks, Will. How are you sheep doing? We haven't really kind of checked in on you since we got back. This is our furthestmost paddock. I love that rock there. The sheep are loving it. Lots of bramble in here. Hey buddy, hey! This one just comes right up to you. One reason we're keeping that one Oh, you want some petting too? You want some petting too? Here, come here, buddy. Yeah, how's that? They've gone up to Will even. They don't care, they'll go up to anybody, I reckon. And then that's our female that we're gonna keep. Boy, aren't you curious. I just got an email, I think from a member, asking for more animals in the videos. Well, here you go. For the child. Here you go. More animals in this video, right? We're gonna get attached to Buddy. He's gonna be here for life. Buddy will be Nacho's companion, our breeding sheep. We had our mower being serviced. Mark's back with it. Looks like it's a brand new mower. Jonah, what do you think of that mower?
Looks good. How do you clean the mower without the motor getting wet?
Well, you just have to know not where to spray when you— yeah, he's wanting to know how to do it. The plugs on the other side, you got to— you got to— for the— everything plugs together, you just have to make sure you don't get— you don't spray down in them. And you did a pressure wash or a blow? Wow. All right.
