A family tackles a day of homestead chores after rain forces schedule changes: harvesting potatoes, onions, and berries; building wooden shelves; installing a 200-foot bee-and-bear net; and cooking with fresh vegetables. Kids and adults work together on fencing, mowing, and kitchen tasks like making ice cream and cobbler.

It is lightly raining. I think we should do the rain dance. Gideon hasn't rained in so long and we really, really need it. And it's a lot cooler, although this says it's gonna rain in 6— 15 minutes and last for 28 minutes. We were gonna harvest potatoes. Hey, how do you feel, Gideon? Good. Why? All right, Jonah's got a sore arm, Mom's got a sore head and shoulder. Henry insists on taking the ladder. Come on, bud. Can you carry this for me? What are you building? Some shelves to put the chick shawls on. How are you gonna get the chick shawls up there? Nice. That is a good idea because we've got a lot of vertical space in here and not so much Horizontal. What are they going to set on? 4 shelves? The 6x6s. 6x6s. I mean, 2x— looks like they're the post. 2x6s for the, like, the box around the edge, and the 2x4s for the raft middle rafters. Okay, like deck boards. The rain is coming down good now, but chores got to get done. I am not going to complain. I will go to the GoPro. We have to cover— the cows are going to come in this next paddock, and we've got to protect that tree with some net. Uh-oh, I don't think we have any fuel. Bone dry. All right, you got that one full? Valley is also empty. Uh-oh, that one too. When we're out there, I'm going to think about string trimming around the bees while it's raining and they're not active. I don't know much about keeping bees. Is it a bad idea? Let me know before I do it. Comment. It's gonna be way too late before I see it. Let's try this tree protection job again. I'll string trim around that tree too while we're at it, huh? What do you think? No, don't do it. I don't know if it's a good idea or a bad idea to do this while it's raining. Without protection. We've got to mow around our bees because it's shortening out our fence, this long grass, and we won't be able to get to them either. Hold on. So far I think it's working pretty good since we have rain. The mower's shooting through there. You want to do one more right there? Hold on. I think they are subdued. Watch this. I'm going to beat you. What did you think you were getting stung? I guess pinched me while I was doing that. Naughty boy. Why is this one so less active? Oh, there's some. There's a lot, but there's just like a traffic jam right here. Let me see. And you can hear the box. Listen. This one you can't. All right, I don't know. I've got to get this ridiculously long bee net. It's to keep, uh, bears away. Look, it goes all the way to Selma. And we might be halfway done. You have to wrap it around too much. Henry, don't take up all those tools. Why is that toolbox even open? Let's put it back. It's amazing, 19 years homesteading and there's still some things I haven't done, like cut a net in half. 1, 2, 3, 4. It's gonna be easy. Why is this so long? I guess it's for big apiaries. You can always make it shorter. You can't make one longer. I think it's gonna be easier to cut though than I thought. I can cut this side, then we can just either zip tie or put wire around that. I think I like the zip tie idea. You think that's longer than a— it's so long. Do you think it's longer than 100 feet? Oh yes, this is 200. All right, well, we're cutting it. Come here and help me. We could get Uh, zip ties on monthly subscription. They're on to me. They don't want to cut it halfway. My thought, it's still too long halfway, but we can't get 3 nets out of this. We can only get 2, so we could have one longer one and one short one. You want to do that? Yes. You have special ends, and I don't want to rework the ends. How do you know? Hey, wait, how do you know? Wait, where are you going? No, no, you can't direct and then leave. Come on. So 2 length 1 wide, so you really only need 4, 5, 6 panels. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and we'll just have some overlap. It's kind of fine. I'd rather have it overlap than be too short. Little zip ties, we got some bigger zip ties. I was able to strap to this vertical piece. We do cut up a whole link and we do the same on this end. We were going to harvest potatoes, onions, carrots today. The rain set us off a little bit. I'm not complaining. So I guess we're doing odd jobs that We've delayed. We're going to go try that net. Let's go see how much easier it is. Hey, it's a lot less net for the Energizer to power. Means the Energizer would be more powerful. You guys think it'll work? Feels really good. That was so much easier. There's so much less pressure on the Energizer. That's one of those jobs I probably would have never done. So thanks to the rain for throwing us off a little bit. Wish it would keep raining, we really need it. Wild blackberries, they're pretty bitter. Oh, not bad. That's gonna attract the bears, isn't it? And here's juneberries. Guys, you could get a mix, you could get juneberries, blackberries. We have berries in too, raspberries. Wow, look, this is a whole patch. You get 4 cups of berries, it could be a mix. This is adorable. He's still got his tools. I don't know, that might not be quite 2 cups. Is that all you got for 2 cups? Go get some more black raspberries. No, 2, but 2's enough for, for one cert— one round. Gideon's gonna go see if he can't get a little bit more berries. Make 4 cups. I'm gonna sear this beautiful chuck roast from stud muffin. Hey, are y'all seed timing? I see our seeds. Seed time. Heck yes. So are we caught up with everything? Okay, so are we playing catch-up? No, we're pretty caught up. How do you say we're doing, Smiley? These are for the pumpkin arch. I'm so excited about my pumpkin. Is that the pumpkin arch dance? Yeah, round up nicely. And look, he found enough. You found 2 cups. Are there wild berries or some of our raspberries? There's some of our raspberries. Okay, cool. A little rainy day. Milk or cream separation. I got a half a gallon of cream from that. I've put a quart of cream in here. I still got a little bit more there to go. My home this afternoon, also good for rainy days. I got first draft of the Homestead Builds cover, approved the Homestead Builds video course. These are the raised beds. Use these if you need an elevated garden bed. And got caught up on uploading all these vlog files. Lily's on green bean duty for tonight. Yep. You like green bean duty? No. I can't get her to do the cobbler duty. You don't like cobbler? No, it tastes awful. Mom's under the weather. We've got half a cup of maple sugar and 2 cups of our berries and a tablespoon of lemon. I love it. High heat. They want us to boil this. Rebecca, it wants me to boil the berries. Do they melt down? They want me to boil them. She calls for a little bit more. Makes me feel a little better. Well, it came to boil. It didn't burn. There's lots of juice. All right, blur the batter in, Jonah. And then that says batter first. We're doing multiple things at once. We got the fresh zucchini and squash going. Billy's straining the green beans. We got the ice cream going. Raw cucumbers and carrots. This is all from the land. A very big meal, big variety from Now we pour the butter on that. It looks a little bubbly. Jonah, how are the fresh berries? Gideon, how are the fresh berries? Good. Lily, where's your berries? I don't like cobbler. Ice cream's killer though. Henry doesn't like cobbler either. Mom, is that cobbler gonna pick you up a little bit? Happy day.
