Chapters
Happy birthday, Henry! Big one standing, standing on your own. 1 years old today. I'm thinking, you know, given that it's little man's birthday, we've got a whole section in the book called How to Get Your Children Involved. And you know, I don't think I need to go over all that for the— for this one time and invite them Help them get started. Let them help. Let them fail. Uh, give them their own chores. Ask their opinion and try it. Make it quality time. Uh, let them play. Urgent message to dads. A big section because you are special. You are very, very, very special. Since it's his birthday, I want to make a movie about him today. Your life. Celebrate your life. And so you can get the book and go over those concepts. These baby carriers are key. We like the Ergo one the best. You probably need a little sweater, although it's kind of warm. So that's one thing I say in here is want them, invite them, take them with you. I would take them even on a— if I had a regular job, if I wasn't allowed, I would quit that regular job. It doesn't matter if you're farming or going to the bank or the hardware store, take them with you. Dads too. I'm not just talking about the moms. Who says I can't dress them? Who says I can't change the diaper? Who says I can't help with the homeschool or the meal? I can do it. I can help. What you doing, honey?
Baking for Henry's birthday.
What you baking?
Um, spice pancake.
Oh, I like it. The rain doesn't bother him.
No.
Well, we're gonna have to put a halt on our winter slash very early spring garden job. That's a lot of moisture. The next step is to harvest compost out from underneath this wood chips and this chicken run. Oh, oh, disgusting!
Yeah, there's a dead rat in that pot.
Water.
Does that not stink? That rat jumped in there.
Let's get out of here, Henry. That rat jumped in the stink. How come I don't smell it?
Go up there and sniff. Yeah, it just got wind of us.
Did you guys do the heifers?
Yes, that calf likes the nurse.
Looks good. Did you clean out the water? Because it looks like there's some old hay in the bottom of that water.
20 years.
Okay, clean it out every day. Okay, Jonah, how's the calf doing? How's Surprise doing?
He's doing it.
He's nursing. Molly's a good mama.
I'll just sit around and, um, watch. Jonah, let's do a night shot.
I think these can wait till tomorrow. These two— where are you going? Let's take this and get hay. Come on, stay with us, bro. Stay with us. It's getting tricky to take you guys along in the rain. I have an idea.
I do.
I got the GoPro, it's waterproof. Well, I'm gonna put the umbrella over Henry and I. How about we'll try to hold that GoPro at Henry's perspective? We'll see what Henry's perspective is for the next part of the chores. Let's try it. Jonah, if you can't push it in the middle, which we probably shouldn't because it's bending, how else could you do this?
Two people.
You got it. You're doing it. Unpool the cord once, you should be able to pull. There you go, good job.
He's asleep. He's about to sleep.
He's sleeping. Oh, all right.
He just fell asleep.
All right. Are you saying you're done? Yeah, check it. Okay, looks what's going on in here. Smells like cinnamon.
It's a spice butt cake.
Mmm, lots of sweet spices. Mom, your boy fell asleep. I know. Happy anniversary to you and honey.
I know.
One year. So one year ago today I was still very pregnant. You were giving birth to this little rascal.
You are?
You're giving birth?
He's out, Rebecca!
He's out!
How do you feel today as opposed to 1 year ago?
Oh, I feel really good because I haven't been in labor for 10 days, because remember, that was part of it too. I was in labor for 10 days before he came.
You're baking cupcakes. You're making— is this what you're making right now? Pizza?
Yeah, we're having pizza because that's the crust was what I craved the most, I would say. Yeah, in his pregnancy. So we're having pizza for dinner.
He's waking up happy. You got him, Lily?
Yeah.
Okay, how's the birthday boy? How's he doing?
Good.
Little toes, little birthday toes.
So I went to her blog to see because I saw that she had shared this recipe on her blog, and I was gonna read the comments to see if maybe there were some tricks. And I was reading the directions of this recipe that's in her book too, and this is, it's way easier what she shared on her blog than what's in the cookbook. So I'm guessing it's revamped. I don't know, but we'll see how it bakes up.
Crust turned out nice. Now we flip it because the underside doesn't get— it doesn't get, what do you call, crunchy or cooked? Yeah, it's still kind of gummy, but if you flip it then it gets Crusty. She's gonna play with the camera, huh? How big one? How big one? It's time to eat, little buddy. I'm glad Mama craved pizza. You have no— I'm kidding. You are gonna get a cupcake for the first time. Your very first sweet. Look at that, Mom's pizza turned out amazing. You like it, Gideon? He'll tell us.
Yeah.
Get off the farm for a little bit. Got the chiropractor for you, little man. You want to get adjusted? On the way home from the chiropractor. Oh, you're going to the birth spot, Rebecca?
We're going to the—
oh, we're going to go right to where you were for— just go a little past that sign, like this, about right here. If you can park right here, we can get out and have a celebration. I pulled in really quick. She wasn't saying she was having a baby. She was just saying, "Pull over." I came around and opened it up. She's telling me to get her pants off. Still, she hadn't said she was gonna have a baby. What do you remember that hasn't been told yet?
I think it's all been told.
I don't think we've told that. I didn't— that you never said— because the last time I knew, we were going to the hospital for an emergency C-section. This baby was lodged and stuck.
What was going through your head?
I just wanted to act. You were primal.
I just wanted it to end.
You were primal by the time we got to the car. Oh look, he got his shirt off. No, no, no. I think you'll like it, Henry.
Happy birthday to Henry. Happy birthday to you.
He doesn't know if he's gonna laugh or cry. Okay, blow it out.
Henry, Henry, blow it out. Okay. Oh, put it in tasty. Do you like it?
That too sweet for you?
Oh. Oh! He's like, "You're not supposed to do that!" Yeah, Ben.
Are you gonna go poop, baby?
He's always poop face. He likes to dump.
He's like, "Okay." I'll take it if you feed me.
Oh!
What is it, sour? It's not sour.
No, it's delicious.
I think it's because you put icing with it.
Look, Henry, you got presents. Mom got you a stack of books. Is this from you, Mom?
Well, it's from all of us.
All of us. Night Night Farm. Hand, hand, fingers, thumb. Everything Mama. Everything is Mama by Jimmy Fallon. That ought to be funny. Yeah, and then You Are My Happy Boat, quack.
Apple's mama. Ball, mama. Balloon, mama. It's a car toy.
Vroom, vroom, vroom.
And a red truck.
Yay!
Happy birthday, boy.
