Our Weakest Link (after the Storm)

Five days after Hurricane Helene, a family restores internet to their rural home by clearing roads, finding a water tank, and rigging a Starlink connection from a neighbor's dish using a generator and makeshift Ethernet patch.

It's been 5 days since Hurricane Helene and we've been out without power, which means we've been without internet. Oh, she went right into the poison ivy. Let's go this way. La la la la la, let me be free. Our neighbor, they are not there, but they do have Starlink. Starlink uses the world's most advanced satellite technology to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet all over the world. That's our priority. This is the old driveway. That's like a 10-foot drop. Option 1 for getting in here. They do not have power, of course, but if we can get our mobile generator on Salma and get Salma in here, I think we'll be all right. The original road. Hey, there's my chicken waterer. Look for our bee stand. That's going to be the chicken dance. Hey, there's our lid to our tank. We found our tank yesterday, our 225-gallon tank. A mile down the creek. I've got our way to do it. We're gonna go down their little access road. We're gonna open their fence. Hopefully it's okay. Yep. All right, it looks okay. Heck yes! So this is not a regular Ethernet. So let's see what kind of wire and we might be able to patch it. Okay, we've got the gear out. We've been completely cut off communication from the outside world for 5 days. Only news we get is from just people coming by that have been out out when Rebecca went to town the radio the other day. She could get some news. Oh, we got the radio! But we really need to get back in touch. Here's another option for getting in. House way up there, there's a place to cross, come through and up, and we're home free. There's one of our peppers half a mile down the creek. Still good? No. No. Option number 3: open up this fence, come through this access road. If we come this way, we can take apart two bands. We should do that way, and if that doesn't work, then we do this. We're back at the house regrouping, getting the supplies we need. Jonah wants to get busy, so there he goes. We totally found our bridge, and it's totally intact. He's going to work on getting it out of there. I'll be— it's probably not a long-term solution. Again, it'll certainly be a nice short-term. And looky there, that looks like a power company. Happy to see you. Yeah, we're just getting the roads kicked back in. Yeah. Hey, how's our solar Power dryer working. You can see all that. These are ready. These are dry. I'm on a mission. Get us connected to the world. By Lupper. By the way, I've ordered Starlink. Our weakest link in this whole thing, it's shown us, it's communication. We have the power, we have the generator, we have the Those important resources: food, water, communication. I don't know about this. It's a little more difficult to take apart the fence without damaging it. Let's try one. Let's try a way Mom's thought, although I'm worried it's a little wet. I was like, no, we can't go that way. Because somebody else's property and it's wet, so we might damage it. It's one thing to go through somebody's property and not damage it. If we go Jonah's way, we need a chainsaw. This is Jonah's proposed way. Oh my gosh, slow down. Okay, I'm down for getting this tree up because it's on the power line. It gets us through the internet and it gets— helps the power company. That's deep, probably. Can we get across over there to the house somewhere? Went back to get chainsaw. Chainsaw stuff. Check on Jonah. What's wrong? Are you sure? Yeah. Why? What plan here is to cut it in reasonable enough pieces that he can move it with the bucket. We didn't get the grapples on because he can grade us away into this creek a little bit better with his buckets. You want to go right here if you bevel it? Sure. We're thinking he can get us a path through there. We made it across! Woo! 10 bucks says we flooded this thing. It's probably not going to start right up. You'll never— you're never going to start it. Why not? I set everything else up and then come back to it. Ethernet worked into the satellite. You go into the router? Yeah. All right, all we got to do is get power. Let's see your best internet dance. Here you go, Dory. You don't believe it yet, do you? Are you surfing? Yeah. You texting? Yeah. Let's see you dance. You're a hand dancer. Our neighbor, he's not here, uh, but we gotta hold him. He said we could take the Starlink, but will it work? It's half a mile down the— might be a security thing. None of these outlets out here work. I found one right inside my office that works. Make sure it's not going to register stolen or something. Hey, I think it works. Yeah, send a text to someone. Papa, send a text. Okay, come. We got internet at our house. La la la la la, let me be free.
