Overnight in our 90-Year-Old BARN

The video is a family vlog documenting a two‑night "Mighty Man Camp" held inside the narrator’s grandfather’s 90‑year‑old barn. The family sets up a surprisingly comfortable campsite with concrete floors, electricity, a 7‑foot projector screen, and Wi‑Fi, then spends the time doing typical camp chores, cooking meals, and enjoying outdoor activities. Highlights include morning routines with a toddler named Henry who is being weaned from nursing, a hands‑on experiment to dry a harvested chicken hide using salt and repurposed crates, a farm‑to‑table "Burn It Up" cooking segment featuring garden potatoes, cabbage, butter, and a later Philly cheesesteak dinner, and a hike up Bearwallow Mountain where the kids rate the view. Throughout, the parents narrate with playful banter, reflect on the challenges of camping with kids, and share the emotional payoff of family bonding and personal growth during the weekend.

We're really roughing it, huh?
Yeah, it's so hard.
Hey, did y'all get pillows?
No, you throw my pillow.
Hey, we're not camping without pillows. We just threw some mattresses in here, some sleeping bags, and they've got to go get the pillows. Don't forget the rollerblades. How was the long commute? Great. For the next 2 nights, we are living in Grandpa's 90-year-old barn. It's maybe not exactly what you think. We do have concrete floors, we got electricity, fall decor, and my favorite A 7-foot projector screen with Wi-Fi. We're binging the show Alone this weekend. This is fun, laying down watching a movie. What's going on right here?
I thought I could see it before.
We're good, we're just burning off old grease. This is definitely a man camp. All right, come on. Hot dogs and lamb burgers, that's it. A rugged water source here. Cheers! You like our camping table, Henry? Homemade ice cream. Happy day! We did it. How'd you sleep? Good. Jonah, you must have slept good. I can't get you up. Sam and John were here 30 minutes ago and Josiah's already on chores. You want to go? You slept in the barn. Get up. What's wrong with you? This was the chief problem last night. Cats were all over us last night. I guess it doesn't help that we let them out bait. Jonah, he's gonna come get you. Who was knocking on the barn this morning at 6:20? Yep, we're gonna go throw him in the pond.
Oh, there he is.
Are you getting out?
Yes, yes, I'll get out.
What's the matter with you?
Cold.
There we go. There he is. Can't hang out in the barn all day. We need to go do our chores.
Can we hang out in the barn?
Yes, more, more cardio.
Are they eating all 3 meals over there?
No, we'll eat tonight though. Rebecca ordered this immersion blender for the kitchen. I'm kind of thinking she made a mistake. Oh my gosh, you're immersing things in a bucket?
I think we are.
Hold this for a second.
Yeah, that's heavy.
Hold that up next to Henry.
It's almost as tall as Henry.
I don't know if that's funnier or that chocolate mustache you've got. It's our family tradition. Every year I take the boys camping and Mama does something special with them. I can't see, but notice something. You know, Henry was nursing Mega, but we thought we've taken this time away to just say, you know what, it's time to wean him. He's 2 and a half years old. It's time for the rest of the family to get a chance to, uh, comfort him.
Can we not eat breakfast?
Why do you want to skip breakfast?
Because I don't want to do dishes.
Uh-oh, hey, fell off! Did 2 fall off? Name of the game is to not let him get upset too bad in the first place. What's wrong? Here, here. Did you want to go with us? Okay, be a bit of a challenge since you won't go in the ergo. Will you go in the ergo? Chase that chicken in. This one's almost to see it. There we go. Come on, go over it, go over it. Come on, there we go. This is chores with a toddler on your hip. Gotta remember, the chief job this morning is not chores, but to keep Henry happy while we're on chores. Take this cap off. Make him feel important. There you go. Here, you need a little help? Now do it, because you are important, aren't you? Put that cap on that. Okay. What did you find? Let's see. Whoa, that's the mother lode, my man! I hope this isn't too late, boys. Plus, he's high. It's been a couple of days. There were maggots on it. I've rinsed it off.
Salt on it.
Yeah, but it's wet underneath there. Is that how it works?
It'll dry it up.
Where are our black cages?
No, we watched that video on this. This guy just laid it out in his driveway and put salt on it.
Oh, you did?
That's what the one guy did.
Feel like it'd be better if it could get air.
Well, let's get it hardened up a little bit. Let's just put salt on it.
What if we just put those black crates, whatever they are, over this and we— and we set her on that. I'll handle this. It's gonna be more than we'd hoped. We using this area for anything? We harvested Flossie like 4 days ago, so hopefully it's not too late. Problem is she'll never dry out laying on this concrete because she just will never get any air to her. Salt is the secret to drying this out. I knew this old chicken tractor frame would come in handy for something. Same thing with this old metal grate. I found it in the dumpster years ago and we've used it for all kinds of things. My idea here is use these crates so that we can lay out the hide flat but air can still circulate. Now for the salt. Boom! We did it! That was one full bag for one hide.
We kind of overdid it.
I'd rather overdo it than underdo it. Let's cook up lunch. Oh, I hate when that happens. Why does that happen? It rusts. I think moisture must be getting through that A cover. The only thing I know to do to cure a rusty griddle. Pull up, Marco, pull up. On today's episode of Burn It Up Cooking Show Breakfast Brunch. Fried potatoes from the garden, cabbage from the garden, butter from the cow. We're killing it. First the potatoes, I think they take the longest, right? Meanwhile, the boys have an idea for their channel. That's a homemade fair ride. Last but certainly not least, eggs. Not a big fan of vegetables, but a cabbage once, twice a year from the farm. All right, y'all come eat breakfast. Hey, since we couldn't go to the fair, we brought the fair to us. I'm gonna say this is one of my best Burn It Up cooking shows ever. Look at this, it turned out perfect. Everything— wait, whoa, Parmesan, Parmesan. Yeah, this ain't even a bachelor meal. Your mom would like to eat this. Hey, is that fit enough for Mom? Yeah, I think so. Is it fit enough for little man? Hey, that's high enough, that's high enough for trying it out first. Don't anybody get hurt. I don't want to tell the doctor what happened here. Nice. It's a beautiful day. We're gonna take a moment and hike the mountain. He's staying asleep. He's snoring. What a great little place to sleep. In the woods. It's fresh out here on your dad's back. What's the matter, y'all tired?
No, we're waiting on you.
I'll just go on. You guys rest as long as you need to. You waking up? Halfway there. I see you guys are pooped. I'm sorry you're so tired. We made it to the top of the mountain. All right, Layton, rate this. First time ever at Bearwallow Mountain. It was pretty fun, like a 9.5. See why they call it the Blue Ridge now, don't you?
Yeah.
Go ahead, go milk that. Good lord, she's got one little tiny dead teat. Rebecca just sent me a picture. She's enjoying a beach with friends. I saw that and I, well, I just sent her this picture. And I was so happy to be the one on the mountain. Which one are you? Beach person? Mountain person? I'm mountain.
The beach is too salty.
Gideon, you like the beach or the mountain? Mountain. You an ocean man or a beach man? The mountain. Beach or mountain? Or pork steak? Sticks. Half, if not 3/4, of the camping experience is food. Tonight, Philly cheesesteak with ribeye, peppers, zucchinis on the side, onions, American cheese, fried hoagies. Is it— are those hoagies? I know nothing about bread. Josiah, I need a lighter. We are rust-free. Henry, right before it's ready, my plate, their plate. Where's your cheese?
I don't want cheese.
You got your mess up, Henry. Can we eat now? Henry has been eating so much, he is getting lean. Is it everything you thought it would be? Everybody set up nice? Yeah, nice view. Perfect little setup here. A pillow, a nice reclining chair. Got my little buddy beside me. Alone, 1 in 10 chance for half a million dollars. What's your breaking point? Can't think of a better show to watch on a Boys weekend camping adventure. Look, little baby Henry's asleep. Happy day, happy day, happy day. How'd you do in the barn? Get in?
Good.
Save the cats being on us last night. It was good. How are you a better person after Mighty Man Camp? Me, me, me, me. I don't know.
I got up and did the chores earlier.
What will you tell your kids about camping in the barn for 2 days? Meat! Give me some meat, Henry. Give me— oh, that's an easy question. You answer his question.
Hearing the coyotes.
Oh, where are you going? Maybe you're gonna give me some meat for the interview here. If you could send Mom a picture of anything you did this weekend, what picture would you send her?
Going up to the Wawa. Oh, those are the only pictures we've taken, I think.
Oh, okay, good. Yeah, this is a big weekend for you because you are weaning and you were out without Mom. Do you miss Mom? She's coming home very soon. This is supposed to be a happy ending. No, don't be sad. She'll be home very, very soon. We had a good time. You became a big, big boy. Night? You want to go night? Okay, good night.
