Paying Ourselves $500 to Drive

Victor and Josiah drive three hours to pick up logs for Jonah's log cabin, paying themselves $500 for the trip. They discuss treated versus untreated borate logs, meet the lumber supplier Randolph, and spend the day unloading and stacking the wood at home.

Happy day. We're on a mission to save $500. We're gonna pay ourselves $500. We don't have to pay taxes on it. And I get concentrated office work for 6 hours. 5:30. We got a 3-hour drive to pick up some logs for Jonah's log cabin build. We've got some rotten logs over there. Stop number 1. 5 minutes from the house. We just left very early, 5:30 in the morning. We want to get the kid some dark hours. He's working on his driver's license. Back on the road. How you feeling? Good. You feeling awake? Yep. Office hours. 45 minutes, man. You got this? Yep. You tired yet? It's a beautiful drive, isn't it, Josiah? Southwest North Carolina, and then I guess northeast Georgia. There we are. All right, somebody's coming out with some lumber. We gotta— hopefully, hopefully we're gonna come out with logs within half an hour if we're gonna get home by lunch. Well, we're at the wrong place. This is where Randolph told me to go. They said they get this all the time though. Where we need to go is 6 minutes away. Thankfully it's not 2 hours away. When I first went in there and told them my name, they went and looked it up and couldn't find anything. And they said, well, are you supposed to go to this place? And I looked that up on my phone and showed them, and I was at the right place. And he said, well, any other name? And I gave him Randolph's name, called Randolph. Sure enough, be under Randolph. Randolph put it under his name, but still. So they called this other place, isn't even his competitor, and sure enough, there it is. I told them I'm so sorry. They said it happens all the time. Look at that little van. 15 minutes till 9. That's when I would have liked to head back. Probably not gonna happen. I'd like to get back in time and have leftover birthday lunch. Excited about that? That keeps me going. Yes. Okay, it's under the same name. Name, season. And this is a log cabin supplier, and back there was lumber. So afraid we're gonna drive 3 hours and go away empty-handed. This does not look open. Another entrance. Just does not look open. Hello? Hello? Hello? I think we're at the right company. I think we're at the wrong building. There is nobody there. This place opens at 9. I'm thinking this is like a showcase. There's a place looking similar over there. Do you see that? Can you cross? There's an idiot. Just stay in that right lane. How many Season Wood Companies are there? Season Wood Buildings. Yeah, this has got to be it. So park wherever you I opened the door and just said, is this it? Third time's a charm, buddy. Hey, picking up an order for Randy Youngblood. The wrong place, first of all. So the guy pulled up here and he said, I'm sorry, it's not ready. It wasn't pressure treated like you ordered it to be. And this is like a facility, like this isn't just paint on, like this is bugging-proof all the way through. He's like, we can do it now and you can come back Thursday or Friday. Guys, we drove 3 hours one way, 6 hours. I don't want to come back. So I'm on the phone with Randolph. I'm like, is this what we ordered? It's not. Yeah, it's true, this is not fulfilled. Hang up. I'm resolved. We're going to go home. And then I realize, well, wait, call Randolph. Couldn't we just apply something ourselves? Yes. Won't penetrate all the way through like if we got it— if we got it to run through the factory here. It will be on the surface. It appears that our old logs that we're currently using are just surface treated. They've lasted a very long time. We have some bug issues, but we've never like recoated or restained like we should have. So these will be just as good as the other logs, and we could even do non-toxic material on the inside. So I think it's gonna— I think it's gonna work out. All right, let's get this 2,200 pounds home. Just crossed into North Carolina, which we We weren't far out of North Carolina. Getting ready to go through the gorge. I mean, I love the gorge, but 40 minutes of— 40 miles of this. We're pulling over. Jessa seems— you can pull right here, I bet. Jessa seems to think we're getting— our logs are sliding. No, they're not sliding one bit. Well, they might have slid an inch. This could be tighter. They have slid. They've slid like 2 inches. All right, no gun in it, okay? And we are almost home. What, 15 minutes? Been doing really good, Josiah. You hungry? Yeah. You're gonna have a nice leftover birthday lunch for us. I'm hungry. I didn't eat. I don't eat when traveling. Low calories burned. Don't need a lot of calories when traveling. Helps the gut. There's pressure on the gut, you know, getting out of your— just either stopping, getting out of your zone. And then, um, it's cheaper and it's just a bunch of junk if we were to buy it out. So we were to bring food, it's just more difficult. So, and it makes going home and eating that much sweeter. Oh, we are home! And look What else? They coming home too? Jonah, Lily? Well, they went and did something with a horse. Let's go eat, Josiah, and then we'll unload this. 2,000 pounds and 12 things. That mean they're nearly 200 pounds each? Well, hey, you come hug me first. That's good, good. You gotta hug your boy too. He drove the whole way. He's ready for a nap though. Hey Annie! Hey Justin! He is ready for a nap. This idea to leave at 5 in the morning— well, nobody said it'd be a lot.
Here we are in lunch.
No, I did. Why didn't it go off? I still had 4 more minutes. Our clock is fast.
I ate 2 pizzas.
You already ate? Is that all we had left?
No, there's another one in there.
You couldn't wait, huh? There's Mrs. Janie. You gonna go show Ashley?
Ashley, happy birthday! Come here! Happy birthday!
Happy birthday! He wants to show you his Jeep.
Let me see, let me see.
Whoa! Everybody gets to see the Jeep.
Don't Oh my goodness, that is such a fun birthday present! Whoa, did your brothers make that for you? A chainsaw! So can you ride Waylon around shotgun?
Yeah, I don't want to be bad because you can take— it's fast. All right, let's unload these logs. Redknuff says these are not treated, the logs that are here, that they would have just been treated on the surface, so they're going to be just as good as those. Look at this framed out room. Yeah, well, I thought I did. I thought we wouldn't be able to get them. Yeah, but we don't want it— we don't want treated logs anyway, right, on the inside?
Well, there's what they're calling treated is that borate stuff.
Okay, well, we probably don't want that borax though. Yeah, not borax. What is it called?
Borate.
Borate.
Okay, we're going to do that anyway, so this didn't have borate? I don't see how it could cause all the wormholes.
Okay, that keeps the bugs from eating it. Okay, it's just a pesticide then. Yeah. All right. Yeah, we don't want that in the house anyway.
It's like that stuff we put on for termites down there at your house.
Okay. Do we put them off in one bundle with the machine, or do we—
if you could, that'd be nice. It'd be a while before we need them. Okay, you can just put them off somewhere with a Stay good and dry.
Okay, what do you think about your logs? Nice. We won't need them for a while. We should probably put some tin over them even though we're putting them in the bass shed. Look, I think if you put them right there where that tractor is, then we'll put the tractor back where it is and then we'll put some tin over it. Let's see if Lucky's got a start on us. It won't. We'll just have to put it— are you sure? Yeah, you can't put it there. How are you gonna get in there? I guess you can put it sideways like this. That's what I'm Maybe that's even better. Okay, you put back— stack the concrete. Okay, I'm just glad we're not carrying these one by one. There it sits. Well, I'm thankful for this big shed. Pin on it just for some redundancy. A little— some 2x4s under there just to keep it aerated. You worked hard driving. For tonight's supper, Asian twist on something really simple. Just fried ground beef, low carb, on a bed of fried cabbage. There's like tomato sauce in it? No, we're not gonna do tomato sauce in this one. This is gonna be Asian. So we're gonna do soy sauce. I'll be dicing the onions and frying some of our ground beef. This is wonderful, easy, and we get a lot of ground beef. It's great when you forgot to set out, I mean, put it in water, but this one's still frozen. I'm excited. New shipment of Jacobson. We've just been passing around one, and now we have two new ones plus the old one. Best kind of zucchini comes in a Ziploc bag. Can't buy that stuff. Yeah, I know, that's, that's the taste of summer right there, baby. Drain it, get that water off of it. I just love that we found a source for these shredded zucchini. Frozen shredded zucchini. That's fine. We're just letting it stay idle. I think we can make this meal in like 20 minutes. So that worked, guys, because that's a 20-minute meal. That's good. When you can do Asian, you can do it Mexican, Italian.
