PIGS COMPOSTING! Will Salatin’s PIGERATOR work on a Homestead?

Victor Justin Rhodes moves two pigs into a Salatin-style piggerator composting system, using a ramp and chute to guide them onto a compost pile. The pigs aerate and turn the compost while eating food scraps, turning waste into fertilizer on his homestead.

Time to say goodbye. Teddy's excited. Elsa's gonna miss you even though you're not paying her any attention this morning. Randy's gonna really miss you too, but he really wants his mama, but he's not getting it because the door is shut. He's still— he's still not sure about me. No. There we go. We'll see you guys. See ya. Thanks for having us again. We're gonna have a Minnesota goodbye or a southern goodbye. What's the southern goodbye? Well, same as the Minnesota. We say goodbye here, we'll say goodbye there, we'll go out to your car, we'll say goodbye there. And by the way, if you want to follow Randy and his Minnesota -60 Homestead Adventures, check out his YouTube channel, Randy Kleiman. I'll leave a link for that down in the description. Here's your snack, buddy. You got dressed, good job. All right, I got the tumbler ready. G-Dog, you ready? One more apple? You want me to wait on you? Better wait on him or he might not come. But he seems like he's in the mood this morning. Yes! The question is, Mr. Brown, where are your shoes? I don't know. I think they're down at the footy park. I can't make this up. Today we got a big exciting project. But you know what's more important than any farm project there is? Getting the chidler to go with us on the project. Whoa, wait a minute. What happened? Truck! Chock, he thinks nothing of his shoes being there. What's this? Oh, oh my gosh, two sets of shoes on the porch to choose from. Okay. Oh nice, did you do that one? How pretty, how pretty. I'll tell you the secret for finding his shoes. Randy had to search the farm over for his daughter's shoes this morning before he fly on the airplane. I'm glad I'm I'm not the only one with this problem. Randy found his shoes. Nice. Look at this. Jonah's taking the initiative and cleaned all this up. I guess all that shoe finding when Jonah was little is really paying off. On this farm, we partner with these little guys. They're our buddies. They want to— I want them to help me on the farm, so I'm gonna help them. Ain't that right? Where are you going with the trailer? We are gonna go move the pigs. It's pig raider day. Oh, this is shaping up nicely. Look, nice. Bet you $50 the tractor doesn't start. Give me my $50. Randy said yesterday, you have a name for that tractor? It's like 32 years old, we don't have a name yet. But I think I do now. It's called Lucky. Lucky the tractor, because we'll be lucky if it starts. Oh yeah, Lucky the tractor. Arun started this. Hey Arun, you start the Suburban? Yes. Why? How'd you know? Because I saw you guys there. Are you betting against Lucky? You're betting against Lucky. Let's grab the cables. We got Lucky hooked up to the Suburban. Everybody do the Lucky Start. Cross your fingers. The Lucky Tradition. Wasn't so lucky when you hook her up to the Suburban. Hungry pigs, you guys ready? We've been waiting a long time for this. The cows have been on deep bedding, we've been mixing in corn. It's time for these guys to go and turn that compost, help us with the compost process. I'm gonna start undoing this cage. Hey, you want to go in there and get their pans? Maybe not from here because they'll follow you. What if— can you see how they're paying attention to us right here? What if you snuck in from behind and got their pans? Good idea. Yeah, I learned— take your Leatherman and undo those pins there. Grandpa Chuck, you're gonna— you're risking it, buddy. They're hungry this morning. You ready, beefcake? Here you go. Lift it off. Let them see that pan there. Just let them explore. They can be together now. They can breed. She's eight months old. They can breed whenever she comes in heat. And then in three months, three weeks, and three days, we'll have babies. Pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig. Yeah, big. Pick, pick, pick, pick, pick, pick, pick. Rune's got it. Oh, they're not going to be tricked. This is a good thing they're so timid. I mean, it's a pain in the butt sometimes, but it's better than them being too aggressive. Let's do one step at a time. Remember how big he is? There we go, there we go. One little bite at a time, we'll get you up that ramp. There we go. What would we do without this Polyface Farm ramp? This thing is awesome. We're there. She's gonna be fat as a pig. He ain't gonna do it. All right, we'll scare him and then he'll jump out of something. He's following you. Go for it, go for it. Oh no, don't leave. All right, well, now they know where it is. They want that grass. Like everything else. He has no care to go up there. Here we go, push her up there, B. Man, if it was just her, it'd be easy. I have to go get reinforcements. Wow, that gate works out nice there. Just— I come to this side and hold up this gate, and I might pressure him with the pig board. Just crawl through. Do you think I can fit through? Maybe. Oh no. All right, let me end this way. Okay, you put it back. There's too much room in there. We blocked this off. We need to create more of a funnel, more of a chute, so that I can herd them with this pig board, get them in the chute, and then just pressure them in there. All right, we've got our chute. Maybe we can do it there. I can funnel them into here and then maybe get them pressured in. I was able to lean one end against this water, this tarp pallet over here, so they don't go behind there. All right, well, we did it. A room! No 300-pound pigs loose and out of control. All it took was a little chute. I'll remember that for next time. They were so calm, I thought they would just walk right up the ramp. Ramp plus chute plus pig board equals golden experience. I'll remember that next time. Guys, we need to do something about these chickens. They're starting to get in our garden. Look what's coming! The potatoes are coming up. Oh, look at that! All the more reason to get control of these chickens. Oh, here we go. Just side to side. Oh, here she comes back. Oh, there we go, we got the chicken in. See there, the chicken's scratching up in the garlic bed. That's what we do not want. Naughty birds. What in the world? That rat. Almanzo, they need to come here. Royal, we're 30 minutes late to milking. I did not think this was going to take this long. Will the gate open all the way to here? I think it will. No chances. Want to put that up, remove that, and put it across. Oh yeah, that'll work. Good job, Josiah, raising that up. We don't want the pigs tearing it up. Is it tiring? There's a little help. Is that helping? Yeah, that's probably good. Josiah, will you hand me the pig board? I'll get in and pig board them out. Thank you. You guys are probably wondering what this is, where I got it. No affiliation. I'll leave the link for this. Hey, I'll leave Polyface Designs for that ramp. Oh shoot, we didn't leave room for the ramp. Did we even get the ramp over here? We need the ramp. Every day is an adventure. Do you want the plans for this thing? Polyfacedesigns.com. I'll leave the link in the description. All right, I need to pull up enough so we can get that ramp. Is that good? Good. You think it'll go down for sure? I think so. How are we gonna do this? I'll get in there, hold them back with the big board, and then you guys get situated out here. Okay. All right guys, I think you can open it. I don't think they'll just jump off this as high as it is. All right, we're going to be where, uh, Gideon is. Just how you're behind the red gate. Well, we'll let them go down on their own. No pressure. They're going. No pressure from me. Gentle pigs. That was easy, wasn't it? Okay, I'll spot you guys. I'll hold this. Just drop it to the floor. Yeah. Oh yeah. Good job, guys. There is corn buried all up in this manure. Look, they're already looking. Look, this is compacted. See, you can see our corn residue on top. They're gonna find that and they're just gonna dig all day. They're gonna turn this compacted material that's already starting to heat up, 100 degrees, and turn it, give it air, add more manure and urine, and just compost it for us. You guys will be happy once you get the hang of things. We will keep feeding them our food scraps, but nothing else. There's so much corn in here they'll have plenty to eat for weeks. Look, he's already got something. Oh, he's eating hay. We'll take it. Should we throw the hay down? Yeah, do that. If you can leave it open a little bit here, they can see the corn. Do it. Yeah, we can turn it up for them a little bit. Yeah, you can get their— that hay down. They probably eat most of it. Oh look, he's gonna find the corn over here. There's some exposed over here, Arun. This is what Joel Salatin calls It's the Piggerator. They're gonna aerate it. Yeah, I think these pigs are gonna aerate it. This is a Burrow Holler first right here. He's getting something. Yeah. Oh yeah. I don't want to leave. This is fun. We gotta go milk. Cows will get stressed out. They're gonna dig it because they like to dig. Yeah, you know, I know what I can do. I'll put you guys on a time lapse and you'll get to see it, and I'll get to see it in replay. He's got some. I hear— I heard it crunch. Can you tell I'm excited? I'm so excited. This is so cool. Another reason for this deep bedding system. Look, they're doing it, they're doing it! They did lift this gate up. Thankfully I was right there in our bedroom window and saw it, so I went ahead and flipped this down, and now they shouldn't be able to lift this up. That would have been really bad. We're leaving pediatrician, and that would have been terrible. Those 300-pound pigs got out. You can forget it. We are at the pediatrician. Got a few shots inside. Nice fish tank, Rebecca. That's my kind of fish tank. I saw a shark in there. Ah, got him on drawing. Mr. Henry, he's going to the bathroom. Mr. Henry is going to the bathroom, and he's doubled his weight. Well, no, he's almost doubled weight. Almost. He was 6 when he was born. He was 7 pounds, 4 ounces. Oh, he was 7. Now we're just gonna nurse Henry and then we'll head home. Well, baby checkup for Henry. Yes, and he's doing so good. His head is good, his head circumference, he's 23 inches long. He's just growing like a little weed. Everything's looking good. Back home, we're heating some lamb meatballs for lunch. Oh, how are the— how are the pigs doing, guys? How'd the pigs do? Oh, they're fat and happy. Both of them are laying down. I don't know if you can— you can kind of barely see them right there through the screen. I don't see a whole lot dug up there, but they're laying down. That means they're happy. They weren't that hungry because we fed them their ration this morning, but tomorrow only food scraps, no grain. They're gonna have to work for that grain, and I think they're, they're gonna. What's the temperature at? Um, well, it's probably going up from the back. Okay. Oh yeah, they still got a long way to go. Mom's getting some work done on the computer. Have you ate good? Are you waking happy? You're waking happy? I gotta hold you if you're waking happy. You can't get out of this swing. Don't you think we ought to hold the happy baby? The TV. There's enough bad news on it, isn't there? So now that's rooted. At least Let that rosette represent my show Rooted. It's good news. I want to get it on y'all's TVs, but it's turning out to be a lot harder than I ever imagined. It's a Netflix quality show, like way above the level that we've been doing on YouTube. Uh, so how do we get it on a Netflix quality platform and on TVs? Oh no, what's wrong? No, don't fuss. We're having fun. First, Well, we need our own OTT platform like Netflix. How about something like a Discovery Plus or a Disney Plus? How about Abundance Plus? Why is it printing so many? Thank you, Mama. I can only do so much with him. I know. Hard stage for he and I. I don't even know if he knows I exist yet. I gotta promise myself it's coming. He'll be on my Ergo before we know it. How about our own Plus Network? You guys like it? Did a 99designs to get this logo. Is that neat or what? Okay, we're gonna have our own streaming platform. And how about this logo? What's that for? I know this is Jerry. It won't be this big, but it will be an app on the phone. It's Jerry. I thought I heard you laughing. I did laugh. That is pretty good. All right, now you're not talking about the logo. It's not Jerry. No, no, I'm talking about the tape presentation. It's a little bit Jerry, but to get Rooted easy on your TV, sure, we could put it in an unlisted YouTube behind our member area, Abundant Permaculture. But this is going to be bigger than this. It's not just going to be Rooted, it's going to be other shows and documentaries and all kinds of good stuff. But to get Rooted on your TV, we're also gonna have to get Abundance Plus on your TV. How do we do that? Well, some of you guys were asking in some of these early things, like never before have any of our content— if people said, how do we get it on your TV? So now a lot of you people told me about this Roku. Raise your hand if you have Roku. Apparently you don't need TV service anymore, you just get what you call a streaming stick, something like Roku. We're gonna get our own Roku channel. You don't even have to have television service. You'll be able to pull— just like you'll be able to pull up Netflix, Disney Plus, ESPN, or any of these, Nickelodeon— you'll be able to pull up Abundance Plus. Honestly, I think this streaming stuff, this video-on-demand stuff, is the future of entertainment. And honestly, I want to ride that wave. Honestly, there's enough bad things and news out there, and we've got plenty of news, good news. And this is a show that everyone— it's wholesome, it's inspiration. People can get together and watch it as a family. Let's get this good wholesome stuff on TV because I think there's a good place in our lives for it. And just wanted to update you guys on that. Thank you for following along on that journey. You need help tying that? Nope, I think I got it. You happy? Yeah. Is he awake? Nope. Oh, he's asleep. Yeah. Oh good, sleeping a lot still, isn't he? Yes. 8 weeks old, must be a struggle. I like him. I'm boiling some water. Do you look big? That's too small. Maybe this one's it. Here you go. I think that's it. Oh, Rebecca, do you know where that lid is for that? I'm just gonna put this bigger one on there for now. Thank you, Mr. Brown, for putting up your clothes. And this is all mine. None of that's mine. None of that's yours, huh? Nope. I doubt that. Cooking this Italian sausage zoodle. I think it means I've got zucchini under there. The key here though is mucho Parmesan, which I don't think one container is gonna do it, is it? Two containers. Just cooked some noodles. This is the trick. When they're done, rinse them off, and that stops them from breaking down, but they still stay warm even though I'm rinsing them off with cold water. They're warm to the bone. That's coming along nicely. The other trick, lots of butter. More butter. Redmond salt. Dinner is served. Hey kids, come on! Wait, come see this! Oh my word, what do we have here? About this. Oh my gosh, that's some, some heck of a Lego city. It's a wall. Well, it's time to eat, guys. Come on, does Grandma have you? Oh, I do. Did she change you? You didn't even cry. No, we had fun. This evening, Rebecca and our assistant Heather are casting a vision for this community center. We're gonna get a star up there, a big North Carolina flag, American flag somewhere in there. We got us some tables. Heather just had the idea for a black and white photo of one of our cows right there. That'd be so good. Some photos throughout. It's getting on in the evening. Sun is down. Let's see what they did today. Oh my word, it's working. It's working. They've dug over a foot in right there, guys. All that corn that was exposed there is gone. You guys are fat and happy. You don't even care. You don't. They are just crushing it. They'll do what they did here all the way throughout that. Joel Salatin's pigurator system really works. Here it is at the homestead level: 2 pigs where 7 sheep were— 5. 7 plus, and then 5 plus babies. Yes, this is awesome!
