Planting Carrots (new trick)

This content was created by Victor Justin Rhodes. This content was uploaded by Victor Justin Rhodes. This is a YouTube homestead/gardening vlog titled "Planting Carrots (new trick)" (recorded 2024-04-03). The transcript captures a casual, diaried conversation primarily between REBECCA and another household speaker (labeled SPEAKER A), with children and family members present (mentions of Gideon, Jonah, Lily, Randolph, Annie). They discuss gardening tasks (planting peas, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes; using a Jang seeder; seed saving; raised beds and tarping), homestead chores (painting, barn doors, shed, hot tub), food prep (quiche, yogurt, broth, granola, smoothies), and personal health/gut protocol. The tone is informal and vlog-style, documenting routine homesteading activities and family interactions.

Skim milk! With 2 cows now in milk, we have skim milk, which is a result of us harvesting our cream. There you go, skim milk coming for your future, beefcake.
La la la la la, let me be free. Found Justin, he was at the cabin doing some computer work. We are going to go and start seeding transferred transplants. I don't know what you call it, star seeds? We're gonna start seeds. We've been looking for Justin. I literally walked all over this farm looking for him. So now that I have found him and his camera, which I've stolen from him, the painters are inside painting today. I'm super excited. What are you excited to grow this summer or spring or whatever? Flowers and corn. Flowers and corn. How many rows of corn should we plant? 3. 3? We only had 2 last year. We only had 2 last year. Annie! We've got 1. 1? I planted so many. Oh, there's another one. I'm concerned about this, Annie. Should I be concerned about the cabbage? So I'm wondering if it's— if it shouldn't be on the seed mat. Right. To be honest, I've totally forgotten to water over the weekend. Sorry about that. And they survived. You figured. You probably saw that when you came in and What are you doing, Lily? I'm soaking these because the soil is really dry.
Did we just plant these peas today?
We did.
The peas just came in. We're not letting our rebuild get in the way. We're not letting the move get in the way.
Nothing is getting in the way of my garden. I was watching Ruth Ann Zimmerman on Instagram and she had 2 quarts of peas from last year.
Year.
Wow, she was putting in her, in her meal.
I'm gonna have that because this is the time I'm gonna— you're starting to plant them. So if you still have peas by this time, you know what's up. So you've planted a bazillion peas over here, and cabbage is starting to sprout. You must be growing tomatoes.
Yes, and we're gonna grow—
it's just warm, and they're in there painting the ceiling.
I know, I talked about that. These are like a paste tomato, but they're very meaty and big, which is what I want so I can save all the tomatoes.
Saving tomato dance.
It is.
You have some stuff planned for the— for the kitchen garden?
Yeah, I want to put in like flowers, and I'm gonna put some like tomatoes in there, and we can put some of the sugar snap peas. We're gonna save seeds from it because it's a dollar a seed. It's a dollar.
That's golden seed.
This is golden seeds.
We've been gardening for 19 years and there's still things, uh, we've yet to do, like save our own tomato seeds. I don't need corn by the Fourth of July.
Well, I must see what— how long that corn takes to mature, and then I'm gonna see if there's one that takes less time.
You know what you might be able to do good is get that Jang seeder set up with the carrots. The Janga seeder.
Look at how nice this is. Oh wow, I love it, I love it.
This is the bottom of our house. Randolph has put wood on the side Hey, that's for my— barn bathroom. Crazy plant lady wants to plant carrots. Can you set this up for carrots?
Yeah, I don't know what the gearing is.
You might have to go ask Mr. Google Pants. What do you do with those? Do you change the gears according to the plant spacing size?
Yep. This is the bug netting. Yeah, I don't know how much we have. This is a 2.5.
I mean, it's 2.4. What's that? It's a chart. You put your seed in that and it tells you what size?
Yeah, that's how you spell seeds in China. In Mandarin.
Or whatever it is. Maybe somebody's Chinese in the audience, they can tell us if that says seeds. Seeds? This is how it is when you start up a new season. It's a bit of a cold crank. 14 in the rear, 10 in the front. Whatever that means.
I guess if they have numbers on them? No, what the gear does. This bigger gear will make that little gear go faster. So the wheel will spin faster. So see, this is based on The— these are the sprockets numbers. So if you want to do like— we're going to do 2.5 with 24.
2.5 what?
Uh, inches apart.
Who's going to weed these carrots? You. You tarp them for 4 or 5 days. So we got to get that— we got to get, uh, those garden— those raised bed tarps. I guess we should make a smoothie like we used to after we gardened. Rebecca, is this all we have? One pack of carrots? Really?
750 seeds in that little thing? Yeah. Oh my gosh, I thought I bought two. Maybe I only bought one.
Did she tell you which row?
No, we're doing 24 feet of carrots.
Rebecca got a meeting about the house build. What in the world? Get out and run!
I thought that dizzy—
quick! What are you doing?
I don't know.
Well then get down. You got no vision, you don't need to be 30 feet in the air. Is that wheel measure right? They're so mad at me for not going by the wheel measurer. How many are we supposed to go? Go 25 feet to right here. There, yeah, just park it right there. Get down! My vision is to be the supervisor. Okay, Mama's in a meeting. Oh, you dropped a little tear on your sweater. Look at the game Gideon's playing.
I can beat you, Gideon.
I'm a little too big. Oh, I like going over instead. Jonah's doing it. Show the old man how to do it. What are you doing? Fixing the beds. They kind of are just rough. We made a mistake. We should have propped these beds completely, then covered them. Any weed seeds, they're getting all the oxygen right now. And the key is to weed early on. Is it working, Jonah? Yeah, I mean You're just digging up all the seeds you just planted. That's to cover the dirt. Does that need to be fixed? And then it does that. It just needs to stay. There's a little fin on it that instead of covering it nicely like this is actually plowing down into it because it's spinning. Pay attention, Jonah. Stay straight. Yeah, slow down. There's no reason to go so fast. How you doing on carrot supply?
Still got seeds.
Oh, there's a few seeds left. So empty these seeds. And maybe just plant them by hand. I would just— okay. All right, Lily, bring the tarp back over it. They don't need light to germinate, and we don't want the seeds to get a hold. This is Casey Oswitch, Master Gardener, telling me to do this. All right, meeting about the, uh, what are they meeting about? Oh, doors inside our homestead dream house. Found our pallet. I'll get Jonah to get it and we'll bring it around. We gotta get these big barn doors out of the garden stall. Getting our garden stall ready for the season. Pendley located right there. I mean, there's the garden. Painters are here inside, uh, priming the walls before floor comes, and they're doing the ceilings. Shall we get a shot? Better not go in there too much to painting. Something else getting done too. We got us our Red Knock hot tub coming right up. Randolph's got us a platform. I got a doctor's appointment in, uh, any minute. Right, Rebecca?
Yeah.
By a phone, what do you think she's gonna say?
I have no idea.
I'm assuming she's gonna say heal my gut. Oh really? My gut was bad, it's now medium. Trying to get it to where she can— we can get on a supplement for Lyme, metal, and mold. That's all in one, right?
Yeah.
But don't you think I can just heal my gut with— I have the power to heal myself.
You took that test like how long ago?
Fasting. I've been eating broth. Every time I eat, I've been intermittent fasting, which is good. I've been walking after meals, which is good for the gut. Whoa, this is going to be bad, Rebecca. It's just gonna take away our light. I'm concerned if we put our shed over that. Look how much light is coming in from that door. Try it how it is and see if it takes away a lot of light. If the shed goes right here, it's going to take away—
it's not going to be—
I mean, it could give you shade for your picnic table. Okay, so how about this? Well, see, here's the thing. Randolph's only available this week. Well, let's put it— let's have him put it up today where it is. What happens if Because they're calling our phone over there. Oh, doctor never called. Smells amazing. Hey, and that shed out there isn't too—
I know, it looks good.
It isn't too dark?
No, I think it's perfect.
The little fire is just right there. So that quiche was such a hit, we're doing it again. Y'all tell me, homestead vlog, I shoot 5 days a week. The nature of homesteading is to do a lot of the same things over and over again.
I'm gonna serve a side of broccoli in it since it's dinner.
Yeah.
And then I've got— I got this for them. Oh, which is homemade granola.
Is that for their yogurt?
To go in there to go into the yogurt?
Complimenting things.
I also did— I also got, um, frozen fruit.
Okay.
So that we can make a smoothie if we want to.
I probably should make some more yogurt because I think this is the last. Oh, but our pot's being used for broth, which— how's that going? Beef broth.
I took it, it's kind of off.
And she's saying it takes 3 days. Yeah, Birdo made it work. Randolph, you're the champ! Best time tonight. This looks good. We come out, we're under shade. It didn't make our room too dark. The fire's closer. How you guys feel about that?
It's nice.
How about a lot easier to start it and draw the bath? Well, the doctor tried to call our burned down house— I guess it's not burned down— our smoked The house that we're no longer dwelling in. So we missed it. Okay, so this is different. You're putting the quiche in a bigger casserole dish.
Yeah, kind of doing like an egg casserole basically. Hash brown layer, bacon, cheese.
I don't know if it's all the protein in there or what, but it did not spike your blood sugar. It didn't spike my blood sugar. So long as I take a lot of protein, I can handle a little carbs.
We will heat up your short ribs.
Beck, what'd you think about that doctor's appointment?
It was good.
She's very happy with my progress with my gut.
Yeah.
Gut protocol's over. I'm gonna keep up the— the broth, my one meal a day. That's been helping too. Just eating two meals a day. I've been lately just eating one meal a day.
She was okay with that too. She thought it was a good idea because you're a man and you have a 24-hour cycle.
I appreciate you keeping this quiche till the evening because I've been— I'm looking forward to that. She was very impressed with how far we moved that gut and 6 weeks. I did that with a combination of things. Walking after meals, minimum of just 2 meals a day. 3 meals a day is way overrated. Breakfast is the most important meal from the day. Came from a marketing campaign from Kellogg's. Walked after meals, broth at every meal. I'm trying to work on stress. 8 hours of sleep. It's not uncommon that I get 9. I'm journaling and going over my past. All right, liking this, huh? Yeah, you've been nailing our hearts. Babe, look, Annie, we've been knocking out the eggs. Time for restock. Yeah, 4 more dozen. Just started yogurt. We got to keep our milk going. We gotta keep our milk flowing through. We getting the milk. Check out this butter from last night. This is hay-fed butter, okay? It's pale. Here in about a month when we put them out to grass, that's gonna be very yellow butter. Bath time. Is it hot, Beck?
Oh, it's hot.
How's that? How's that for a bathtub view?
It's a new view.
Happy day.
