Raised Beds So Easy, We built SIX in a day

Victor Justin Rhodes and his family build six raised garden beds in a day, cutting lumber, drilling frames, and improvising when they run short on 2x4s and drill bits. They troubleshoot rough-cut boards that don't fit, borrow scrap wood, and adjust their plans on the fly to get most of the frames assembled by late afternoon.

First thing we got to do is get our tools out, Mrs. Brown.
This is not—
Whoa!
Yeah, I know you can.
Watch out. Saturday, hopefully our big day to get these raised beds done. We have 3 cut. Beauty and Jonah worked really hard on that yesterday. This is what they did. We have 1 built. The problem is we need to build 6 more, and we need to get it done this weekend. The tools are out. All the supplies are out. Let's get on. Let's get on with the growing. Hey, I realized we're missing a lot of drill bits there. Do you know what happened?
No.
Okay, that's brand new.
Look, there's the two bits that are missing.
Oh, okay.
See, look.
Okay guys, I think we're ready. We got somewhat of a cleaner area. I'm gonna cut these, and Jonah, do you think you could start drilling frames?
Yeah, I can.
Okay, go for it, buddy. Do you need your love tank filled? What happened?
You're what?
I don't want all the boys coming up here.
You don't want all the boys out here? I'm sorry, you just wanted it to be me and you. Wait, why don't you help me with the 4x4s? You help me with this, okay? Can you get me one? Go down to that end. Yeah. How's it going over here, supervisor?
Good. You're not allowed to get with it.
You got one frame up already?
Uh, about.
Do you put the walls on too or not?
I'll put them in.
Go get our chalk line and I'll show you how to easily do that. So you have to come an inch off on either side. Mark an inch off over here and then this The chalk line, where'd it go? You hold that in with this mark and that mark, and then somebody let him pop it. Yeah, we went 18 and a half on the height rib, but these are sticking out a little bit, so I'm thinking we're gonna try, um, 19 and see what that looks like. See how this sticks out? It's gonna be fine for us. We can just put this dirt side down, but we want to get you guys some— the plans. We want it to be perfect. All right, Rebecca, it's all you. We're gonna have one person on this. As much as we can all day. I'm gonna go milk. Have you guys tried a 19 yet? Whoa, it looks perfect! I like it. These are all the 18 and a halfs. Yeah, just start piling the 19s over there. That's the only difference. What do you have here, Mr. Brown? You got a farm going on, don't you? Oh nice, done with the milking. How's it going out there, Bec?
It's going good.
Good.
What kind of juice you making us this morning?
The usual.
Yeah.
Strawberry carrot.
Look, Rebecca, it looks like a cookie jar.
I know.
Blueberry squash pancakes.
These are so good, y'all. Like, so— there's some what we're calling blueberry jam, but what that is is just cooked down blueberries with a little bit of honey added into it. So it's just a little bit of sweet. So it almost replaces syrup.
I use it as syrup.
Yeah, so you put it as syrup and then some cultured cream. Did you do that?
It's just been cooked down so it's easier to digest, and because we've been on the GAP so long, it's like a— it's like a syrup. No problem.
Seriously. And it's, you know, this doesn't have much honey in it at all, but what do you have?
Their dog killed them all. Well, I guess we wanted—
good for her.
They stabbed him through.
Good for her. Way to go, Laurel. Uh-oh, get your mom's phone out of the— if you've taken your picture, take it back to her please before it breaks. Okay, let's assess the situation. Lots of boards cut. One, two long walls fixed. So one raised bed. Let's just keep building the frames and then we'll assemble it all. Or let's just keep building the walls.
We're running out of 2x4s.
We didn't get enough 2x4s. We do have some scrappish stuff from the greenhouse build that we could borrow, you know, get, get it back here, but Look, there's all the 2x4s we need. So we could just use these and replace them by the time Jason comes back.
Hey, Mom.
Okay, Mom and Dad are going back by Lolo's, so— okay, okay, um, well, let me put together how many— what I need. Okay, okay, bye.
Okay, cool. So we can save these 2x4s for Jason. Get them to get some screws too. Okay, all right.
No.
One assembled. One ready to be assembled. Another one ready to be assembled. 4 to go.
So this one is that one. So 4, and then I'm starting 5-ish on 5.
You think we're gonna get done, Beck?
Totally.
We have a long time after lunch that we can work on it.
Okay, I could start. I could, I could do lunch.
Okay, you want to do lunch? I'll keep drilling.
Yeah.
Okay, the short ones are a little harder because you got to go an inch in. Those are already cut, just ready to be—
no, no.
Okay, yeah, build the frame and then put the 1x on it. Look, I just been putting one screw in either end of the 1x because we're gonna run out before Big Daddy gets here, so we'll reinforce it later when they get here. Okay, what's your duty, John?
Pulling staples out of the wood.
Do you need a better duty, or do you like that duty?
I kind of like it.
Okay. Hey, you better not lose those staples.
I'll put them in there.
Okay, good job. Mom, you like your duty? You got kitchen duty.
I, I don't mind kitchen duty.
Go ahead.
Time to eat.
Time to eat. Okay, we got 1, 2, 3— they put that in the wrong place— 4. 4. Okay, 4 nearly assembled, and we got straight run after lunch.
Great.
Rebecca, what's the deal? Your parents coming? Because we're gonna be out of screws soon.
They were going to Lowe's to get more cedar boards for me.
Mm-hmm.
And— um— the Lowe's couldn't find them. I called the other Lowe's. They didn't have any or couldn't find them. I called Home Depot. They have them. So Grandma and Grandpa—
Cedar boards?
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
Grandma and Grandpa are on their way.
All right, good.
They're gonna pick them up there and then they're gonna come home and then— no, don't, don't do those. Those are still regulars.
Okay, let's eat. It was a wonderful lunch, Beauty. Let's say it's 1:45 because it is 3 hours and 15 minutes, and we have about 3 and a quarter more to put together for sure. You think we can do one an hour? I think we can do it, guys, if we hustle. We are on our last one. I've got the short side here. You're making me some 3/10s. Hey, are y'all working on those sides over there?
Yeah, it's the last thing.
The last side?
Yeah.
And then I gotta do— finish this side and do one more little side, and we can start putting these together. Holy smokes.
It's not the last side, there's still another side.
Grandma and Big Daddy are here. With our boards, but I just realized something. They're rough, they're rough cut. Yeah, that means they're not going to be the right width.
I didn't know that.
Yeah, they're 3 and a quarter. Whoops.
3 and a quarter, you said, or they're rough.
Yeah, 3 and 3/4. We need 3 and a half. I don't think it'll matter. Hey Rebecca, do you mind that it's just going to be sticking out a quarter of an inch?
I don't think so. I do mind.
Okay. I just didn't know. I didn't know.
And these were even a better price.
I got my own.
Well, should you rip them? Can I have the—
Hold on. Do you just want to leave those the way they are since our corner posts are rough?
I don't care.
Two more to go.
Well, not really, because I've cut all the— oh, you've cut it, so you guys just have to put together.
So two more to go.
One more to go.
You've only got one more, and we've only got— and well, we got an hour— well, I got a little less than two hours.
Awesome. What time is it?
Think we can do it and assembly it and then clean up this mess?
Yes.
It's gonna be close. What's the big idea? You done?
I'm supervising.
Okay, I mean, how much more you guys got?
They just have to do this.
That's all I got too, is one more frame.
Okay, and then, um, we have to cut the 4x4s.
You haven't cut the 4x4s yet? Okay, it's 4:10. Did you need to do something at 4 for supper? Okay, I'll go do that and then I'll cut the 4x4s after I get done with this frame.
Hey, they said they're done.
You're done? Bring it on over. Do you guys want to learn how to put the boxes together? Yeah, look at that ambition. It is 4:20. They're still anxious to go. Good. Come put it right here. We might as well start putting them up right here. Josiah, get her 4x4s. 4 of them.
Okay, don't—
all you have to do—
how's it going over here? You got 2 on?
Yeah, all you have to do is just keep it from pushing up.
Now just keep it level.
That one up, that one up on it. Oh my word, I cannot believe it. 5 till 6. I think we wanted to quit before now, but we did it. I mean, we didn't have enough screws. We did— we were able to attach everything with screws, but we need to go back in some places. Oh, our 7th one. We're, we're gonna have a hard time fitting 6 in here. I think that was because we had planned for the kits. And they had a much thinner profile. I guess, are you clearing way to go further this way?
Well, I—
or at least a path here to clear anyways.
Like, this is just overgrown. Okay, an old rose bush that I planted a really long time ago.
We were gonna have 4 foot between them, but looks like we're gonna have to go with 3. We can still get a wheelbarrow in. Nice, that's some skill. And If we move— I think we can make it happen if we move this raised bed all the way up against our rock path. Now time to clean up.
