Root Cellar Leak | problem found

A family homestead tackles daily farm work: canning tomato sauce, harvesting peppers, feeding animals including a pig named Harriet, and assembling a mobile sheep pen. They discover a leak in the root cellar's air intake and plan fixes for clogged gutters and storage expansion.

Good morning. Good morning. What's that for? All right, should we put these people in? Now's a good time while she's feeding and they want in. Looky here, the start of hay. That makes me feel good. A third of our hay imported for this year. We're on a good start. Should be getting the rest in a couple of weeks. We got tomatoes or what? I'm gonna guess we're probably about 70% to our goal of 100 Jars of tomato sauce. That's soft. Okay, I'm going for it. What about this big boy? We have— ooh, do we have a crate? So we've been losing some to the ground. We need a whole crate to do a whole batch, which gives us 7 quarts. If there's not a whole crate, they could rot while we wait. I'll show you this. Peppers are jamming this year and so beautiful, coming in nice. How'd the beans do while we were on staycation? All right, they could maybe use a little bit of guidance. That can wait. I need to get these tomatoes those, uh, because I need to get the beautiful one started because I need to get Harriet moved. She's hungry. Pig. Oh, there's a few more coming on that. I do.
Can I go take a picture of a bee?
Sure. What are you gonna take a picture of bee for?
For the fair.
Okay. All right, let's see it when you're done. We got a whole crate. Now, are we gonna have another crate? Maybe. There's some high-hanging fruit that might come in in a couple of weeks. We're milking this for all it's worth, done as good as we can. I mean, look, we strung these up to the top of their hangers, maxed— what did we do, 3 rows? Uh, maybe we could have had a fourth row. Seems like we never ended up doing anything in that final row. We did not get to our— we're probably not going to get to our goal, which means if we're going to, we're going to need to expand this for next year. Hey, how are the pictures? Not that good.
And one nest is like completely like not good.
Oh, how do you know?
Zero bees coming out of it.
Oh really? Well, good try, buddy.
And also, if I got too close, you'd blur.
It would be blurry.
Yeah, we just let these guys out of their tractor, and turkeys, they're like the— they're the dumbest bird. I don't think they went back in it at night. If we're going to let them out during the day, we're going to have to shut them up at night. That's definitely when they're going to get got, and they're kind of in that— I think they're big enough to not get got by aerial predators. How they got out of the shocker net, I'll never know. Whoa, they missed their gate!
How gross.
Make sure you put 2 men back on. The boys want me to make yogurt. I should do that while the milk is still warm. Oh, there it is. Ah, also Harriet needs to be moved. She's probably out of feed. I better do this. This has probably been cooling off for a while. Milk comes out a little over 100 degrees. We like to do our yogurt at 105, so the sooner we catch it the better. Otherwise we have to take the time to reheat the milk. This is a lot faster. All right, got the yogurt started on 105. It's gonna go all day. Okay, dangerously low on butter. I let us run out of butter once. I vowed to never do that again. It was bad. I've set some milk out for cream separation, which cream is what you need to make butter. Let this come to a warmer temperature. All right, Henry, let's go. Yeah, what? Look at Henry driving. We got dual steering wheels. Okay, you haven't completely run out. She's eating something. Her grazing is limited, so we gotta keep it moving. Wasn't I just fixing this one week ago? How's it look? Got 2 rope clamps on there. I came out here one day and this was— the end had slipped off. Kid must have come out here and pushed it with a machine and it got hung. Pulled the carabiner off. Not carabiner, uh, wire clamp, hose clamp, whatever you want to call it. Just discovered our problem. These wire clamps, they're too big and you can only get them so tight before they run out of thread. That's not— that's not going to be tight enough. Okay, I didn't even bother filming that. I didn't think we would find any. I found some smaller ones. Gideon's playing in the hay and he's calling to tell me— hear him? He said the pig's out and going to the garden. Almost finished that, but if that pig gets in mom's garden, I'm toast. Looks as though I didn't put her back on her gate. That's a, that's a rookie mistake. Okay, she's coming back. She's in a hurry. Come on, honey. Give it up, this big waddle. He knows. Look at this. Come here, big thing. Come here, big mama. All right. There you go. All right, that time now you're secure. Let's go finish this sheep, uh, sheep— what do you want to call this thing? Well, I call it the luchador ring, but one day I'm gonna have plans for this. I don't think people understand that. Mobile sheep pen. What's up? Phone?
Yeah, yeah.
Why?
Because I need to take a picture.
Oh, okay. Doubled up on this. Oh, it did need more tightening. Put it on the list of things I need to do. Put brackets up there so I can hang this lean-to. What are you thinking?
I'm just taking off a bit.
It's got to be high enough so that you can scoop this. And do you think though that trucks would ever want to come into that bay? I think what they did is they backed into here, keep the hay dry.
And then it was going to be a barn door right here that slid this way.
Hmm, okay.
But all right, so I don't know if there's actually a good spot to build one.
So how high up you're gonna go with that lean-to?
I don't know, very high.
And then you got to do like a 16-footer. Goodness me. Our root cellar's been flooding. We suspect we've got a leak around our air intake. That's what I said.
Well, I'm wondering if this has glue on it.
I came when it was raining once, but I didn't see water coming through there. But I should have came when we had that crazy rain yesterday or the day before.
I know, we never remember. We're always happy to be inside when it's raining like that.
I know, that's my biggest suspicion because we thought it was the gutter not catching water coming here. That wasn't it because we fixed that. The only thing, if we flood this, it is going to get wet.
Just kind of spray.
I also wonder if our gutter is stopped up and it's overflowing and going down in there. I think I might have found a vulnerable spot around the edge of that. Oh, you just keep going.
Put water right here. Yeah, I'll put water right there.
It takes a lot of rain.
Oh yeah, it's keeping in.
Oh yeah, you got it dripping under the pipe, huh? That means we need to get— we got to dig it up mega so that we can get all around it with that foam stuff, I guess. This has been a problem for months. We finally figured it out. 30 more minutes, finally get into the garden. It's not too hot because of the breeze. I want to get these weeds up before these plants get crazy. Josiah, we got one plot done. Darlin', sanitizing jars. Yep, hard baking. Uh, roasting. Get the skins off. Roasting. Things will be happy tomorrow. We're gonna have tomato flavored pork this year, babe.
I know, right?
Now you've got them all canned.
I've got them all going.
Now you're gonna boil them for 45 minutes.
45 minutes once it gets to a rolling boil.
How's it feel?
It feels good. 6 more quarts.
You're almost done.
I'm not gonna get to canned salsa this year, which I'm kind of sad about, but I could buy I could go to the farmer's market and buy a couple bushels of tomatoes to can salsa. Should I do that? Once we move into the house. I'm not doing anything before then.
Don't do it in this little bit.
But I think that I might do that. I just had that thought. I might contact some farmers and see. I'm hoping— I need to check the tomatillos. Is that how you say it?
Tomatillo.
I always say it wrong and the internet always lets me know I'm wrong. I need to check those in the raised beds and see what we have because we might be able to make the salsa verde. We might be able to can another 6 pints. I don't know, I'll have to see. I'll see where we're at with that, but because Lily likes that.
Jars are popping. That's the sound of food security right there. Indian chicken. We got butter coming. This is warm. I'm gonna get that later. Mama made some raita. It's cucumber season, so Indian chicken is back on the menu. Henry is not interested. Gideon is interested. Lily's interested. Mom, you interested? You mix it? It's delicious.
Yeah, so good.
Happy day.
