Root Cellar Rescue, Try #2

A family digs out a failed concrete slab in their leaking root cellar and plans a fresh pour with better material. Between the work, they plan a 100-mile bike-packing trip and film for Banff's 50th anniversary festival.

And we're making chipotle copycat. We've got paprika, olive oil, red wine vinegar, chili powder, smoked salt, oregano, cumin, lemon, lime— lemon because I don't have more limes. Let's make the marinade. A lot of supper prep behind us. Let's go check out this root cellar. Go get us two shovels. Let's recap. We poured a concrete slab over the hole. We raised the hole. It was leaking, been leaking ever since we installed it. I don't know if we need to have that vent. So though, first thing, Gideon, dig it out. You start digging it out. Dig the dirt out, Gideon. Don't do the trowel. Don't use the trowel for that. I'm gonna loosen up the mud in here because that's easy. There we go. Oh yeah, now that can dry. Now let's dig out this one. So we can take the form off.
Wow, it's crumbly.
It's chunky. Why? It didn't go in good. It went chunky. Hey, don't, don't. Is it holding?
Gosh, I don't know.
Let's see what in the world we used. It's been sitting here a while, so is that bad? It's been sitting here since like November. High-strength concrete mix, just add water. One was completely closed, right? I brought one that was open, so that might not have been a good mix.
Hey, hey, so can you, can you just take a hammer and get rid of it? Yeah, well, that's what we got to do, and we'll have to redo it again the same way, inside and out, I guess. And then I've got some in my, uh, cardboard there in front of the car, in front of the truck.
Do you think mine has gone bad?
I don't know. You want to try this stuff I've got? I don't know.
Yeah, we may have to. I'm gonna try another bag of this, and then if that doesn't work, we'll come get your bag. Let's try it. I mean, maybe because those other ones were kind of open. Jonah tried doing something else with this stuff and it didn't work. Should we just go get Big Daddy's then? Maybe pull that pipe out of there and chip away at that concrete. It won't be hard. That looks sandy, just like the other stuff. Don't need to breathe that. Watch out, Gideon. This looks brown, right? And sandy. This has such a sandy consistency. No good. Let's go get Big Daddy. Let's pour this out. Big Daddy's got some. Oh, and it's a different brand. You think 1.5 bags will do it? Probably. You want to carry that one and I'll get the full one? All right, we got us some. Hey everybody, hey, put your mask on, Gideon. Josiah, dump it and run. Oh yeah, that's so much better already. Already that's gray, right? Josiah versus brown. Okay, that is 100% better. I don't even know what I'm doing and I can tell you that's better. Just get us clear. Get that drop cord and stuff out of there, Gideon. Gideon, get the drop cord and stuff so we can build the form again. What we needed yesterday. Soupy. All right, Gideon, we gotta start shoveling that out. Can I just put that back on there? Just rig it temporarily. Very little water pressure right there. Wait, fit in. All I gotta do is rig that up a little bit. We gotta temp fix. 100% better. I feel so good about that. I needed to put off my time with Austin. I had to put it off an hour. We've got to go over our bikes. For this 100-mile bikepacking trip we're going on. Check that we've got everything, pack our bikes. We're actually making a movie about this. We're going to submit this movie to an outdoor film festival, Banff Film Festival. I've been going to that for 20 years with my dad. It's kind of nostalgic. He's gone now. Now I take my boys outdoor adventure films. It's a different genre for me in the filmmaking, uh, but it's very exciting to me. It's the Banff 50th anniversary. It would be really special if we could get in, get into this film festival. I told the boys and everybody, I told the whole family, if we get in, I'm taking you to Banff. We've been to Banff, Canada, but that's where the main film festival is. There's little satellite viewings, and we go to the local Austin, you packed? Is that it plus your backpack? Here's our halfway mark refill. My setup, that's a little bit more, a few more snacks coming, but I have room in my, uh, pack. It's a balance thing— convenience versus the more convenience you have, the more weight down you are. So difficulty— convenience versus difficulty. So what are you choosing?
Uh, convenience, because I'm sleeping on the ground.
The convenience is you have everything you need. Oh, like something to lay in.
I was thinking the other way. It's convenient to not carry things.
Oh, okay, okay. You can think of it— we can think about it like that.
That was one of the frustrations.
Giving up comfort. Yeah, you're giving up comfort. Yeah, for convenience. Yeah, yeah. Okay, that makes sense. And I'm taking comfort. Jonah's trying to be super minimal too. He's all frustrated with what he's had to take. He's bulging. That's not going to work in rain. You know, it's calling for rain, spotted showers. What do you have for the rain?
Most everything is all waterproof, so I gotta punch it for myself.
And if you're sleeping on the ground, pop up under one of you guys's. Yeah, that'll keep the rain from you. But what about the ground being wet?
Uh, I'll be inside.
Friday.
Outdoor adventure day. Not going biking because we had our bikes tuned up. I want them to stay in good shape. We're taking the whole family on a hike. Got a built-in rucksack.
Halfway mark.
I'm thankful for you, Henry, my 35-pound rucksack. Huh? What if we lived in this rock? Yeah, that'd be wild. We wouldn't have any bills. We'd be free. You'd live anywhere, wouldn't you? Yeah, as long as we were there. My little talk show. Oh, blessed to have this practically in my backyard. Back home and time to cook this chipotle coffee. First up, the white rice. Frying it, frying it in some avocado oil. Cheat day meal. Are your eyes bigger than your tummy, Beck? No, it's less than Chipotle gives you. Is it Chipotle? Is it Chipotle eat your heart out or what? It's a cheat day meal. 4 of these every Friday. Joe's side is as good as Chipotle? Sun is going down. Movie night. Uh-oh, what happened? I burnt my arm. Uh-oh, is your arm all right?
Yeah.
Okay, you gonna make it again? Popcorn? Oh, come on, don't give up that easy. Boys are putting away the cows. Shabbat shalom, everybody.
