RUSH! one day till we move

Victor Justin Rhodes documents the chaotic final day before his family moves to a new house. They pack kitchen items and furniture while managing farm chores: checking calves, steer, sheep, and chickens, plus harvesting tomatoes. Lily bakes a spice-nut cake for a fair as the family reflects on what they'll miss about their current homestead.

Happy day, just one day. Tomorrow night we move into our new house. I'm walking out here at the break of day to see that the calves didn't get over. Hopefully.
They're right there, ready to poach though.
You know who doesn't care that we're moving tomorrow and we have a lot to do? These calves, this steer, they don't care. I don't care. That sheep, she don't care. I don't care.
Leftover?
No, but me going over there stirred them up. They did stand up. I wouldn't waste too much time. The tomatoes don't care. I don't care. They need harvesting. This hay, which needs put back under shelter, doesn't care that we're moving in. That rain coming, it doesn't care.
Pigs don't care.
Chickens don't care. Compost pile doesn't care. That needs to get turned. You care? No, Royal doesn't care. So, let's get my training finished and let's get to work. Towels don't care. Excellent. Oh, this is full. What you making?
Uh, spice nut cake.
What for?
The fair.
Oh, you're entering the fair with a cake?
Yeah, hopefully I win because Mom entered this when she was a kid And she won.
We started a little Tuesday school. Mr. Brown getting a little more structure, at least on Tuesdays, right? Oh wow, stuff down there.
Hey, hi Justin!
Hi Gideon!
There's Gideon. There's a bunch of you, huh?
If you have extra stuff, you can just set it right behind the door there or up on the counter. That's fine.
Come on in.
All right, have fun.
Get in. Aww, feels like I'm dropping my kid off his first day of school, which I guess I am. Hey, this is pretty cool though. We are half a mile from the home to get into this school, and it's side by side. He just goes till 2. We're right down the road if anybody needs anything.
There's a bunch of girls in there.
Always thinking about the future. Your shoes in here?
My shoes are here.
He doesn't care either that we're gonna move in. Everybody else does. Yeah, you did. Rebecca's gonna continue working on just setting up our kitchen. Oh look, it's working good. Cleaning crew comes today, should get finished. Hence how we're moving in tomorrow. You want me to come in there? Yeah, this could be your room. Incidentally, the beautiful one found a smashing deal off of Facebook Marketplace. Two sets of twins, you call them twin beds, and a dresser, solid wood, like $300. Go on, have you ever been up there?
Yes, three times.
That's perfect room for you. You got You don't even have to bend over.
We have this up here.
Oh, is that going to be your playroom?
Yeah.
Well, the problem is there's so many deals. If milk deals are fish.
I had them in the White House.
Wait, the White House is back there.
Oh no.
Where are they?
I had them in the White House.
I thought you said they were at the cabin.
They are.
There they are. Goodness.
All right, found his Keens too. Lucky day. All right, let's get your, uh, why don't you bring your Crocs and we'll put them in the right spot though. Josiah's going up the mountain to clear the trail to our, our, our water tank. Josiah clearing trail, Jonah's clearing graveyard. I need to get up some of the trees for him. It's looking good. Not much for me to saw, just this stuff, that, this. I like this wooded vibe. I'm just afraid it's going to be hard to establish grass. I think he needs to kind of work up and more around it. Look at the view it's opening up though.
That's nice.
And once he clears that, because we're gonna put that in pasture— oh, we're gonna have a killer view. We're gonna have a view from the actual grave. I didn't really I didn't realize that till just now. We have a rock down there to have a nice little pretty place for picnics. What's wrong?
The track popped.
Are you serious? That's a pain.
It's just not easy to get on.
How did it get off track? Does it need to be tightened?
It hit the rock.
Oh. Says he has an idea. He's picking up the skid steer.
Now what do you do?
That's a good question.
Idea is that it'll just slide on as it spins.
Why will that stick make it do that?
Because it'll make it slippery. Right next to me.
Perfect. So close.
I don't know if that worked or not. That's tricky too when it's off on this side, not that side. It's better to be off on this side. Oh, it is?
Maybe when you have a problem, just get a bigger stick.
Like you need metal, maybe. It just crushed that stick. You want me to go get the digging iron or try this one? No, this is rotten too. Okay, you got it?
Bigger stick?
Might do it. Keep going. I don't think these sticks are working. I see the idea though. I got the digging iron. When I was down there though, Mom was helping. I need some help with the container. Get stuff moved around to get to our house. Hopefully this works so we can get out of here. It's not gonna work. Keep going. All right, I don't know what to tell you. Okay, I need to go help with the container. All right, let's go then. You and Jess, I'll mess with it a little later.
Yeah, good saw.
It's kind of no point since the logs won't be moved, so we kind of did this for nothing. And we're really needed with us moving in tomorrow. Yeah, I should probably be doing something about that. That's what happens on the permaculture homestead lifestyle homestead sustenance homestead. You're always balancing. I'm gonna be happy. You'll see us both. What kind of damage are we looking at? What shelf do you think she wants? Think she wants the brown shelves or the silver shelves? I'm gonna kind of guess the silver shelves. Okay, I can see why she got intimidated when she came over. I don't— where do you start?
Do we need this?
Let's do this. Maybe I have some vision here. Stuff like this extra teas, this waffle cast iron waffle maker, there's a recycle batteries. Anyway, stuff that I know that's going to want to go over to the pantry. Let's box it. Or in this case, the herbs. Proud of myself. Got the metal one cleared. Now let's go hope it's the metal one that she wants cleared. Our goal for move-in day, which is tomorrow, by tomorrow, is to have our kitchen, our food, and our sleeping set up. That's all food right there. Oh, it'll be nice to not have to go back and forth. Oh, I took it. It'd be nice to have a pantry in the house again. Hey, there she is. She's at the cabin.
What's up, Justin? How did Gideon do?
Oh, that was— it was— he did fine. It was sad. He wanted somebody to go with him. He didn't want Jonah to take him.
He's gonna have so much fun. It's scary at first. I went to school.
First day of school. I had lots of first days of school. Has anybody else gone to something like that?
That's a co-op. One time—
it's not really school school, but it is.
It's not school because it's a lot of fun. He's gonna have a lot of fun there.
Yeah. Was I supposed to do empty the metal shelf? Or the wooden shelves?
I was thinking metal. Well, we have these metal shelves in here too. Okay, that we can get.
So what do you want me to do with all these boxes that were of stuff that is pantry-style stuff that was on the shelf?
It can, it can go over there.
Okay. Are the cleaning ladies coming today?
I hope so.
Rebecca and I concurred we don't need to put anything in there until the cleaning ladies are done for sure. Well, we know what's entailed. It wasn't that bad. It took up some load of boxes. I don't want to put these back in here and then pick them up again. Let's at least get them up. Let's put them over there on the covered porch. Is that what you were going to tell me?
There's an apple in my mouth.
Guess what?
There's another apple.
Blaze doesn't care that we're moving in tomorrow either. You still got to be ridden, and Lily's YouTube channel doesn't care either. What are we going to make a video about today?
Uh, my riding routine.
All right, Lily, shall we go?
Yeah, let's go.
Shall we go, Blaze? It's already time to pick old Gideon up. Look, here he comes. Get your school— your supplies. What do you think, Henry? Coming back with more than you brought? No. How was it?
Good.
Yeah? Tell me about it.
Nothing much.
What was your favorite thing?
Painting.
Oh, you painted? Here's your cookie. Do you have any old friends? Amalia? Noli?
They don't really count as friends because they're kind of girls.
They're kind of girls. I don't think Sally's built for a dump trailer. Going low.
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
Wow, that's pretty impressive. Boys proved me wrong once again. Thelma was strong enough to move that dump trailer. Look at this Facebook Marketplace score. I said $300. This was $280. This real wood? Can't be. Yeah, it is. This is incredible. Wow, how'd it come? Look. Wow, I thought we were gonna do a a bed that way. Yeah, and then a bed this way.
It looks better if they're side by side because they're like weird, they're weird curves.
Hey, it looks good in there. We get a bench too.
Fine. Can I stay here?
Sure. Did we just eat our last meal in this house? All right, so that'll be part of the plan then. Food over there tomorrow. I want everybody to name something that they're gonna miss about this house. Everybody's tempted to be done and over this house.
I'm gonna miss going outside to I'm gonna miss having to do laundry.
Come on, don't be smart.
I'm gonna miss sleeping with all my siblings.
You're being smart.
I'm gonna miss having the baths outside with you.
Okay, you stole mine.
You're gonna miss that.
You stole mine. You don't enjoy a bath at night out there with your brother? You take one after us.
I have to light it and start it every night.
What about thinking about the negatives of it? This is an exercise to think of the positives.
So nice, the weather, you know, it's like Getting dusk and the crickets are starting to chirp and—
That has nothing to do with this house.
Yeah, because it's out there.
Oh, out there. You're enjoying that. It's an outdoor bath.
It's an outdoor tub.
You stole that from me because I'm gonna miss the bath together.
Literally nothing good.
Well, I'll tell you what is good about over here. Electricity. Yeah. And running water. Kitchen.
I like this house because it has a roof.
I like it. If we didn't have this house, we would want either be one, living off farm, two, camping in an RV, or we might have even done a tent.
Will you guys miss the view from this porch?
Yeah, the view from our new house is even better though.
Gideon, you might miss having your chores in the yard. Oh yeah, because I don't think that— oh, there'll be chores in the yard over there too. This is hard to beat. I guess we like the bath. That's it.
One thing I like about this house is that It's a house and we were able to live here.
Yeah, I got one. We were able to experience what grandpa and grandma— they have 5 kids in this house. You guys got to experience what Boots, your pet ball, felt like.
I couldn't live my life without having him.
He lived in here.
All this is having the turkeys right next to the house.
Except I think they had a bed also in this living room. All right, well, we'll say thanks to this old house. It housed yet another family.
I'm happy that this house is I still don't believe I'm gonna believe it. Because, because Ashley and Roslyn can live here and I can see baby Waylon a lot.
It's gonna be pressing. We've got to get food over there, Rebecca, and we got to get our bed set up. No farm projects tomorrow. The project is moving in. All right, happy day.
