A guy raised a steer for 30 months on hay, then butchered it himself. His 5-pound chuck roast cost $15 instead of $75. The math: $3 per pound after feed and labor, plus the work was something he wanted to do.

This is how I saved 75% on beef. This 5-pound chuck roast would be about $14.50. Hopefully that's 5 pounds, so that'd be $75 for a meal. We might have leftovers, so 2 meals. We grew this ourselves, raising a steer to 30 months. So feeding it on hay twice, 2 seasons, $7 a bale. It eats a full bale that second season, even less than that before, but let's just assume a whole bale. We're looking at $3. We harvested this ourselves. We're looking at $3 a pound. Yes, we put in the work, but that was work we could do together. And if I had to earn the $75, I'd be working alone in that office. That's good.

If I had to start my Homestead all over again, it could only pick one animal…
