She Came Up with Simple Solution To Work in Hot Sun

A family works through a scorching farm day catching escaped poultry, moving livestock across pastures, and treating a sick cow. They improvise with zip-ties and oversized clamps while monitoring temperatures between 80 and 88 degrees to prevent heat stress, taking breaks for ice cream and jam.

Our fat chicks have been getting inside of that at night. That's their crib, that's where their food is. We've been having to pick them up and put them in here, but the little boogers have also been jumping. Oh boy, they're not going to be easy to catch. Whoa, they've been jumping up on this from down there and getting out.
You get some, or those have escaped?
They've escaped, every single one of them.
Well, do you want to get those escapees first?
No, we won't be able to catch those escapees. I bet we will. I could have—
I caught them yesterday.
You did?
Yeah, just go between them. They're dumb enough.
Wow, good catch! We're gonna have to clip these little guys' wings already. Watch your fingers, babe. I'm watching. All right, it's like clipping fingernails.
Good girl, that's a good girl!
Good job, Rebecca. I would have never thought we could have caught those little guys. Sweet chin gravel.
That one, right?
Maybe it's my surgery.
You seem to be in much better shape.
Professional talker.
You're funny.
Stop it. That's what I do for a living, Beck. We'll blame my surgery. Look at these guys. I just love how they're just going straight for the greens, scratching, getting some old feed. Hey, your starts are going good in the greenhouse. Good job. This is working, this ventilation. You guys ready for a move? They're gonna move from here, the upper pasture, all the way down around that forest peninsula and right over there. This is a day we're gonna be thankful for the hitch on Sally. This is super— what do you call it— ridgy, sketchy. Look how Look how angled. This is when I'm so happy we put a tow option on Sally. Well, Sally made it easy. Look how high we are, guys. I just had to move this back. That's crazy. All right, free the birds.
That's exciting.
I'm sorry, guys, it's a little late this morning. I had surgery. Have mercy.
There's still meat in here.
Look. Look, Josiah, they think you got the food. Hey, calling Mom.
There.
Mom's got her attention now. Mom's got their attention. They're trained to that bucket, aren't they? Pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig, pig. Pig, pig, pig, pig, pig! Super convenient. We're way out here in the far field and look, I'm walking right there to water. I think I'm going to learn from last time. Got a direct line. Oh my God, that's some water pressure. Why'd you let the turkeys out?
Because they hate this moochie dirt thing.
Oh, they do?
Yeah, they don't— they don't get all the grass.
They—
sheep already ate it.
Just like that, he lets you up. He just moves the net. You guys are ready for some fresh grass. Are you finding anything behind the sheep? Is it working? They're eating something. They are liking this though, which is not behind the sheep. Hey, are they gonna be okay? They're kind of spreading out. Oh, I heard them back in. This is easy. Wow. Definitely not chickens.
That's why I took that daring move.
Start getting our stuff over, Josiah. They're just not quite as interested. We've been— we're trying to run them behind the luchadors, you know, just two species in one area. There's a little bit of wear if we put them over here. Wearing on the cow pasture a little bit, taking a little bit away from that. So we tried that, but I don't know, they don't seem very happy. What do you think? No, I think they like this pasture better. Um, it's not as— I don't know. Look, look, look, look at that vigorous—
because the luchadors ate everything.
Yeah, yeah. And this is more delicate. Got some more clover in it. Next up, sea monsters. They need to move. I don't know, do we, do we have enough room over here, Jonah?
They can go into the swamp. They've done it before. You've had to go into that and they crush it. They crush it.
They like it?
They trample it and get rid of it.
You think the net will be all right?
Yeah, if you—
yeah. Okay, well then let's put it right there. And then I guess we need to— somehow we're kind of in a trap. We've done this whole area and we're going to need to move those guys a pretty long way because the turkeys were over there.
Oh, they're gonna have to go like past—
we're gonna have to move like way up there. That's gonna be a very interesting day.
We could just catch them all.
That's a possibility.
Jonah, can you get our cows down here? All of them. He's saying Stud Muffin's got a little bit of a runny nose, so we're gonna check that out. I'm gonna get the milk supplies. He says he's got a big runny nose. We'll see. Did you make me coffee?
I did make you coffee.
Well, I can smell it out there. Thank you, that's good because I'm feeling down. Oh no, why? It's 9:20. I liked milk 20 minutes ago.
Yeah, I know you do.
It's getting hot. I was thinking it might work today, but my jaw's hurting.
Yeah, I mean, you can take it easy.
We don't have to— swollen. See, it's swollen. Does that look swollen to you?
It's a little swollen. Yeah, I'm a little swollen.
Oh God, I was thinking if it wasn't going to be hot, we could work on the water line, but I don't know if I can— I could push through if maybe it wasn't hot.
Yeah, no, I don't think you should. I think you should rest.
Rest. All right, uh, we'll check out Stubnuff and, you know, he's been sick before. Remember he had that crazy cough and Synergy kicked it? He kicked it. So that's just what I'll do unless it's like crazy severe. Comes Phyllis. Gonna get a stud. We really got to get everybody here. I don't see any protruding snot or anything. Here, Phyllis!
Phyllis!
Oh boy, wrong one.
Hey, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on!
Oh, don't go in there. Okay, this is good. Let's see his snot. Hold on, hold on. It's okay that they get a cold or something. He's breathing normal. He looks like he's in good condition. Here, let's just— it won't hurt to give him some Synergy, will it? Okay. We're giving him some alfalfa because I don't want to syringe that guy. Now that's drool. Yeah, I don't think it's crazy. I think maybe— I was thinking maybe we'd treat him twice today, but no, it's so minor. Do we even do it again?
We could do it for 3 days.
He snotted up the gate or whatever, just in the morning. I know, that's what I was meant to say.
It's okay, you're, you're observing, you're learning. It's good to be safer than sorry. Just pour a little bit on there. Yeah, just kind of spread it out evenly. I would just put it under there real quick. There, perfect. Gosh, look at that neck! He's a beast.
He was not that big.
No, no, he's grown a lot.
He's turned into a nice young man.
Hey, this is kind of neat. We got all the cows here. We got Phyllis, Flossie, and Stud Muffin. It's kind of like getting all our kids together. We're all together, aren't we? Thank you, Flossie. Now this could be interesting getting everybody back up. Let's start with the the leader. Come on, mister. Come on, come on, come on, let's go. Good. Now let's get the second command. You gotta go by order of dominance. I've learned that the subordinate cows do not pass the leaders. It can be a little tricky herding them down a lane sometimes because they don't like to pass the big one. And if the big one stops, how you gonna get up to keep them moving. Okay, Stud's poop is totally normal. It's actually pretty perfect, so I'm not too worried about it. That just seems like a normal little bit of runny nose every once in a while kind of thing. Uh-oh, our lane got put down. It was up. What happened? What happened to our lane? Well, that went relatively smooth. Can everybody help me? Like, look at this, look at this mess before we make breakfast. Can everybody chip in? Can we do that for dear old dad with his swollen jaw? All right. Yeah, you ready for the eggs? All right, you can't keep me down. I guess I can't stay down. Hopefully I don't regret that. Let's just kind of putz around. Let's go at it with that attitude. Like, we're not trying to break any speed records. Let's see what we got. I don't think we have enough parts to do it all, but let's see how far we can get, and maybe we can order the right parts. I think that's— well, let's check. I think that's for our drying rack, but I ordered too many, so— and we probably don't need it. Chicken drying rack. Oh no, yeah, we need those. That's the shutoffs. Let's take those. Hey, you ready? Put all this stuff right here. If you can dump it out, let's just see what we got. Why don't we category it? That wouldn't be terrible to have boxes for each individual.
What about this?
But we need to— yeah, that's, that's, that's a mineral feeder. We ought to get these out too today, Rebecca, for our chickens. I'm excited about this Premier, uh, mineral feeders. Anyway, Mom's work. Let's help Mom separate things. All right, this is our setup. We end up categorizing things. Hey, don't do that, please. It looks like we are limited by however many of these we have. We only have 5, but that'll go 500 feet. She's taking care of her plants. Let's look. You know what, if you're not testing, you're guessing. How hot is it out here? 85. Now how hot is it? Oh, it's 80. It was 86. You got up to 86. All right, what is it in here? 88. 2 degrees hotter in here. We can take that, right? That means our vents are working. It's as stupid as it's gonna be. 85 degrees out here. We're gonna be right out there in the middle of the sun.
We could get our, um, our, uh, umbrella for gardening that I have.
Yeah, if you want.
I'll move it for you.
All right, let's try it. Who's in charge of the umbrella?
Isaiah's in charge.
Here we go, we're a team. We've come to a screeching halt. This is too big for our hose clamps, and our, our socket wrench isn't in there. Hey, it's okay, it's okay. Mom's coming back, Mom's coming back. Is our socket wrench not in there? All the stuff we brought out, not a socket wrench. This thing's too big. Do you think we're gonna have a smaller one in this set? I don't think we do. I think we're gonna have to resort to this. But even that's too big, so we're gonna have to take a smaller socket wrench. It's working. So we're off to a slow start, but now I think we're gonna start kicking it. We just did something new, and that was a 90-degree angle. We went from our water line over here, 90, zip-tied it down, and we're going straight up through there. Now we'll zip tie every— at every post. Look what we have here. This chicken escaped all the way from the pasture. Came all the way down. Lily caught it. Was it easy to catch Lily?
No, I caught it.
You caught it? Okay, so what we're gonna do with these chickens— we need chickens that are gonna stay in a sheep fence now.
Yep.
So we're gonna mark this with a green zip tie for these rogue chickens. Green zip ties. And these are gonna be— put those in Lily's posse. Okay, thank you. All right guys, look how far we made it.
Woohoo!
The old house. We came on up here, we made 500 feet.
We did really good. All of us were working together.
So we're gonna get more line, you know, we had the pig line. Yes. So use it up, wear it out, is just drag it up. We'll use that.
Yeah.
And then, but what else are we going to need? We're going to need some of these pieces. Uh, oh yeah, we're out of those.
Here's one.
The male, the female. Or the male, the male. These pieces, these pieces right there we need more of. We had to call Mark, our mechanic, because our, our lawnmower blades were screeching like metal on metal. Well, that's one way to pick it up, Mark. Yeah, the tractor. Oh, is it loose?
Yeah, too big.
He's got a battery-powered air gun.
Feel pretty rough.
All right, we took a break. I got some Pollo's ready. Mom said, let me make ice cream, or you want to go do chores with us? Make some ice cream. Take a hit for the team, babe. Work some of that ice cream here in the air conditioning. I'll go, uh, move those animals. Jonah's gonna stay over there. You know, he's getting a really good education working with Randolph, carpenter, working with Mark, a mechanic.
What?
What in the—
Grandma said the 6 chicks were out. There's probably where they're getting out. I think until we put wire, bury wire in here, that's our best bet. So we gotta get these cows through without Hamburger getting through. Okay, good. He's getting excited because we weaned him. Like, he's 6 months old, we've weaned him from his mama. Check, check, check, check.
Check this.
Check, check. So just move the chick Shaw up here. It's a lot easier to move about 150 chickens in it. I mean, 150 pounds of chicken. If we just get our fence hot, we don't have to let them out in the morning. We can just leave the door open. Eat up, Jonah, you deserve it. Yeah, pig out, Josiah, you deserve it. And guess what?
Ice cream!
We got ice cream coming, thanks to Mom. Eat up, little one. Everybody works hard this Sunday seed day. Hey, what happened to us taking it easy?
We're gonna be out in the noonday sun.
So all that work in the hot noonday sun getting water out to the cows— well, thank you cows. That's why we do it. How'd it come out?
It turned out amazing. It's not as firm because I made it It's super late, but it's delicious. Best jam. It's best jam, Grandma says.
