Store Has Everything You Need to Live Without Electricity (2023)

Victor and Rebecca tour an off-grid supply store with their son Henry, browsing wood stoves, composting toilets, freeze-dryers, and livestock gear. They joke about what they'd actually use and how to fit it all home, weighing practical needs against the store's endless homesteading options.

We are back at the store that has everything you need for living without electricity. You looking for anything special today?
No.
You planning on canning anytime soon, Becca?
Maybe next week. We'll see.
Quick, look at the toys first. Get him happy.
That's the tractor.
There's more tractors in the back, Henry. She said, can you stop screaming? He says, uh-uh. Right through the candy. We got to be getting close. I think he cares less about the little tractors. Our job is to get Henry happy so that we can do this tour. Hang tight. He doesn't know what to do. Henry, you're surrounded by tractors. Tractors, tractors everywhere, and he's going for the big— biggest ones. There you go. You carry it, baby. You want me to carry it? Maybe he wants it open.
Do you need help?
Oh, you want to open? Okay, now how to get him out of here.
Okay, so are we gonna— are you gonna buy Lily horses? Is that what you wanted to buy? So we're gonna get the kids something.
Okay. I don't know how we're getting them out of there, but we just did. This way, bud, this way. Glad he knows nothing about candy because we just went through a room of candy.
I think one of this would do us.
I think— what if we got a cart and then he could sit in it? Is that a bad idea? If there was ever a homesteader store, this is it. Just how you steal into knives. Put your knives here. You know, it's gonna be hard to bring something back, but maybe we'll shop something for the kids, for the boys. I'm kind of thinking along the lines of tools, machetes, hatchets, something useful. Get them some loppers. We already have the splitting maul, it's amazing. We already have, what, this hatchet right here. Do you have an idea we're gonna get Jonah and Josiah and Gideon? A hatchet maybe. Look at this dual axe, Josiah. Oh my gosh, watch out, that's a drawing knife. How about this for Gideon? Little tiny hatchet? Yeah. Or this one? What's the difference? It's even littler and lighter. And then for Jonah, you think some— something along the same line, or do you think we should find something else, see what else they got?
We should probably look what else they got.
Okay. Chicken waterers, feeders, milking machine, burkeys, tool handles. They've got to have a machete here. We're getting close with the size. We should get Jonah a stirrup hoe. Oh, there's a machete. I would like a machete for trail clearing. Oh, we can't take a machete on the airplane. Not even in the luggage? Oh, do we have a big enough piece of luggage? Look at these old chainsaws on display. My goodness, let's go live outside, Josiah. They're selling sheds, rocking chairs, chicken coops, raised beds. Look at this micro greenhouse. Shall we go in the shed? It says we're welcome. Oh, that looks like a house. I know, right? You and Jonah could have a cabin like this, couldn't you? Just get you a shed, put your bed in here, you're set. Little tiny sheds. This wouldn't be terrible to cut the branches off our access road. This is the hardware section. If there's any category we spend more money on anything else in homesteading, it's hardware. If you're wondering where Rebecca is, she kind of had to step out with Henry because he kind of got a little crazy. Wood stoves are a given for the off-grid living. We still have two wood stoves, a wood boiler, central boiler, and then a wood stove like this. We like our redundancy. Did you know you could have a freezer off-grid and a stove? 6 cubic foot freezer run off gas, a fridge and freezer combo, stove, full kitchen off-grid. Who knew? Did you know? Do you care? Oh, how do you loo when you're off the grid and still feel like A somewhat normal person? Nature's Head toilet. You can get a Nature's Head toilet and put it in your box trailer and use it instead of a gas station bathroom. Look who's back! It is not the same without the beautiful one. We're glad you're back. And we got it open. You just gotta play at night.
Put your legs through.
You had to take them out. We didn't— I didn't want you to— we don't want to be those people. This is a new yodel. This is like the one we have, which is awesome. And are we gonna get a new one, or are we happy with ours? We're just gonna put it more central.
I thought we were gonna keep it, but this one might be a bigger one.
I think ours is 60,000 BTUs. Does this say how much it is? 70,000. Ours doesn't go straight up like this, correct? It goes out.
It would have to sit out so far. Yeah, we might have to get one.
And I like how this has a thermometer built in the side. Oh wait, yeah, okay, well it has a thermometer probe. Otherwise you have to get those spring-powered thermometers that you put on top, and we always end up damaging them. That's 84,000 BTUs and Less money. Hey, do you know what I should get a 15-year-old boy? Serious wood cook stove. Yeah, no, real serious. It's the Pioneer Princess, Rebecca. Washing machine off-grid. You checking out the freeze dryer?
Yeah.
Is that the brand you want?
Yeah, this is what I'm gonna get.
Harvest Right.
But I'm gonna get— yes, but I'm gonna get the large. This is a medium.
They make them bigger than that?
Yeah, not much bigger.
What are you gonna freeze dry?
Lots of different things, like we can freeze dry strawberries. I want to freeze dry the liver, the heart.
We just take it as a peel.
And yeah, and colostrum.
I didn't freeze dry colostrum in a tray like that.
Pour it in. Take the liquid and you put a thin layer in, then you freeze this like in the freezer, and then you put it in here and you set it.
Okay. You're gonna get a plug for it, right?
What do you mean a plug?
So you can plug it into the grid?
Okay. Yeah, how else would you do it?
Well, this is the store. Oh, this is everything you need to live with electricity. Just making sure, just making sure you're not doing anything crazy.
Okay, I'm not doing anything crazy.
Okay, maybe we should get me something for Father's Day here. I was thinking something to clean the grill with. Oh well, like what Darcy had. It's like a scraper.
Okay, the problem with those is that it leaves. This is a scraper. You take an onion, making me scrape with wood, and you scrape it with an onion. Yeah, because those. Those. The little shards come off of it, and then they get on the food and then people eat them.
Little shards come off this.
Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
These metal spatulas. Darcy had a metal spatula that she cleaned her. It's like a cutter.
Yeah, they probably have that here, but it's not in this area.
Rebecca, this is a pit boss. Look at this griddle. It's all about outdoor cooking, babe.
I know. Where are we gonna do that?
Are you gonna have us a griddle in our house?
I might get this once we have our new stove. I'm gonna make sure that—
Cannot get that now. No, no, I do not want to pack that on the airplane. Shopping for Grandma. Birdhouses, bird feeders. Nothing down that aisle for you? Bird feeders right here, babe.
I'm thinking about how to get it home though. You put it on the window and then the birds hop up here.
Sure, that's gonna be a lot easier than glass. This is even smaller though.
That's so cool. That's a cake feeder.
Oh, it's a bat cave.
Look at this.
That's what you like.
We should get it for our fridge.
It says, we are all together beautiful and delicious. Is that what it says?
No, it doesn't say that. That's what I was thinking.
All the Foxfire books, the original traditional skills books. Look at this room. We've been here an hour and we haven't even gone into the domestics yet. Pillow baskets. Oil lamps. Where can you go and get oil lamps? It's probably one of my favorite sections, like a museum. It's all these old-fashioned oil lamps. That's how they used to light their house just fine. Even, even Papa, he had an oil lamp. We still have it, it's in the farmhouse. Got your new washing machine back for the remodel. I wonder if Winnie wouldn't carry this off. I'm gonna have to remember that, maybe order that. Winnie, our guard dog, is bad about taking off some pans. Hey, I got us a new dryer too, Rebecca, for our remodel. Rebecca, I'm gonna get you the new Maytag. I was just kidding about the washboard, all right? You don't have to get the washboard, it was a joke. I'm gonna spring and get you the new Maytag. It's got a meat grinder, it's got a meat— it's everything. It's a meat grinder, butter churn, washing machine. No reason why every farm shouldn't have the new Maytag, powered by electric motor or gasoline multimotor. The hours saved at each wash day could be spent in other profitable ways. Layman's Hardware, 20th year anniversary. Look at that cowbell! Oh, we had to get a cowbell like that for Flossie, huh? Where'd you go?
I'm in the kids section.
Oh, you dared to go back in there? Bold, here I come. Pick something up for Lily. Don't, don't go too towards the TRA.
We didn't go in there.
Good. Would Lily rather have a puzzle or a horse figurine? Which kind? You want to get her one like The horse walking horse? We'll get her this one. It kind of looks like Copper, the workhorse we just had out. We got our horse like Copper. What do you think? Hey, Henry, do you want to carry this horse for Lily?
You want to carry the horse for Lily?
You want to sit in the cart? We're going in full domestic, starting with the cooking tray. What do you like about that?
Oh, I'm just looking at to see what it— what is made of. It's not made of what I want to buy.
She is, after all, the crazy stainless steel lady.
If you want to get a knife— oh, here we go.
That's what I was talking about. Is that really what I'm looking for? A bench?
It's called a bench scraper or a dough scraper.
I feel like we're a ticking time bomb. Henry, Henry, we have to go to the car. We need to go to the car.
You want to hold the tractor?
He thinks this is a tractor. That's fine. I feel like this is for serious canners only.
I'm not a serious canner.
Well, maybe not yet. Certainly not yet.
You can be whatever. You don't have to be a serious canner.
Well, you walked right by them. You're gonna get them.
Well, that's This is an All-American and I have the Presto.
Do you already have a canning equipment?
Okay, this is what I have.
$200. Um, they work, it works.
They were saying that the All-American is the best and I'm sure it is, but I don't can every day or even every week. We're looking for the knife for me and it's great for you.
We're getting colder. Here's a staff person if you want to get straight to it.
It's okay, I found what I needed. You did? Yeah. Okay, thanks.
You have knives like that. That's good. You didn't like any of those knives, Darcie?
None of those would add anything to my life.
Well, hopefully we find a bread scraper that will. Or a colander for soup on. Is that what I'm looking for? Well, no, it's not. We got an immersion blender, hand-powered. Oh wow, if there's a snake in a bed, that's what I'm looking for.
Yes, this is what you're looking for. A dough scraper.
But which one do you get? Hugs and Kisses?
OXO?
That one looks more like what Darcie had. How about a ladle, Beck? That's a 32. My spoon is too big.
You could take one scoop and pour it into a 32-ounce canning jar.
You make memories with that thing.
He says we're not making memories. He said we made memories by squeezing the teats.
We have a motorized version.
Do you?
We do not want the memories associated. We have one. We have an Italian ice cream machine.
We just push the button. You just push the button, mix it up, put it in, push the button, and in 30 minutes watch you have ice cream.
Yeah, we made the milk memories when we're out there milking. Well, I guess we shouldn't just get this because he kind of half wants it. I think he'd really want it. What's the matter? I mean, they're worth it, they're very good, nice tools, but is that really what he wants? Well then, let's just get him a knife. Same thing for Gideon. The machete was $10. What about the US Army Survival Book? More pictures.
Yeah, Jonah. For Jonah? Oh yeah, he might actually like that.
We want to get them something that they'll really want or need. You need hot dog roasters. There you go, Mom's already on to something. Yeah, there you go. Knotting game. That teach them how to do knots.
Here's Camper's Challenge.
Here's a survival kit. 3 things What will it take to survive? What about a flashlight for Gideon? He can even use it on the farm. Now that's a bungee cord. Becky, don't let go.
Don't you let go.
I might, he said. These straps are suspenders. Heavy work suspenders. Tie down big stuff, but not too heavy stuff. All right, laymans, perhaps we'll see you again next year.
