Surprise Cow Birth! This Could Have Been Bad

In this informal farm vlog, the host (Speaker A) guides his children and helpers through a busy day on the family homestead. The video opens with a discussion about repairing Josiah’s go‑kart, identifying a broken wooden axle and brainstorming metal replacements. The conversation shifts to an electric bike that needs a new throttle, and the host promises to order parts. The family then reviews a property survey, marking old plats, locating a pond culvert, and planning pasture expansion and spring access, while ensuring they respect neighbor boundaries. Mid‑segment, they discuss upgrades to their Abundance Plus podcast setup, including a new monitor, soundboard, and microphones, and tease upcoming guests for a free‑range kids summit featuring speakers like Joel Salatin and Ben Greenfield. The narrative culminates with the unexpected birth of a calf from their cow Polly. The host narrates the birthing process, the calf’s health, and the naming of the newborn “Surprise,” expressing relief and gratitude. Throughout, the host interweaves parenting reflections, comparing raising children to gardening, and promotes the free‑range kids summit as a resource for families. The video ends with the family ensuring the calf and mother are safe and reflecting on the day’s achievements.

Okay, the moment of truth. We had a cold, frosty night last night. Double protection, we went below freezing. Does double protection help?
Woo!
Much better, much better. The beautiful one will be very happy. How are you and little dude?
Good, good.
Oh, what's this, Josiah?
Uh, the stuff from my go-kart.
Want to try to putz around on that a little bit today? Sure. We cut those out and we attach bolts to them, and that's our wheels. That's our axle, so to speak. What's happening to your go-kart?
Well, it's really hard to do the front steering because it's just made out of wood screws and stuff.
So it looks like Your axle collapsed. It wasn't with weight.
You can't really build an axle.
Why did that bend up?
I don't know.
It wasn't where you attached it.
Something gave.
Something gives in this.
No, this gives.
Oh, that gives. Oh yeah, your 2x4 came off. Your 2x4 came up. Can you find another way? How do they do it? How do they attach these?
These metal?
Hmm. You did so good with this whole thing. You have a nice body. You have the steering wheel set up right, just attach it right. You have a seat, you have a toolbox. Well, I challenge you to keep thinking about it, keep mulling it over in your head. It doesn't have to be something you fix today, just be thinking about it. What's the story on the motorbike? It's not a motorbike, it's an electric bike. I guess it's an electric motor.
Yeah, it is.
Okay, so you painted this thing?
Looks good.
Does this still work good?
Yeah, I just need a throttle for it because I busted it.
Okay, did we order you a throttle?
No, we're gonna do that today.
Okay, let's do that today. Get it going again. You know, the Holler Boys are coming this weekend. Yeah, we like the coolest kids. They brought their own motorbike. Let's pick these up, guys.
A chicken died in, um, Beefcake's water.
What'd you do with it?
Fed it to them.
Oh yeah, this morning? They're eating it, enjoying it. All right, let's keep their waters covered.
Yeah, it landed on one side and it flipped.
Ah, if we put the barrel strap on it, it won't get— it'll be vacuumed and water won't come out. But we could maybe open up the little cap and maybe even put a screen over it. Yeah, Polly, I wish Flossie would have got some like that. It'll be a lot easier to milk.
She has Phyllis's genetics. Yeah, big teeth.
Any babies? Maybe not today. The kids say they see dripping coming out of here. I think I saw a drip, man. If she's dripping, it's, it's without a doubt. We're already mostly not in doubt because of those udders. The surveyors are here. They needed old surveys. We're marking the boundary of our property so we can put in— it looks like there's access. We can put in ponds, we can put in What else we putting? Find springs. I got something for you.
Awesome, thanks.
Old plats.
Yeah, like I said, it seemed like everything I looked at, um, this was some stuff my dad had plotted.
Yeah, yeah, that's my house there, and that's the big 55-acre track. Yep, across the street.
We've got your pond culvert so far. We haven't shot the creek down to it yet.
Also, what we're doing with the survey is continuing our nook and cranny farming. Grandma's house on our land. Look, this is pasture. This is possible pasture and views. Views for Grandma. We're down there. We're way down there. I'd say we came up 400, 500 feet, and if we— I can see it in the winter a bit through the woods. Wow, you guys, that's the Luchador pasture way down there. That's the road, but we need to make sure we're not cutting down neighbors' trees when we clear these pastures or views. He's actually showing us the corner he got, which the neighbor surveyed, and we thought we owned more. So it was like, this is good because we might have made a big boo-boo down there along your fence.
At this point are, um, the Jeff Hughes stuff.
Okay.
And then where, where did it just go? Oh, right here.
Okay.
The pink flag.
Okay. Oh, I see it.
Yeah, that's the, uh, 2-inch pipe with a pipe with a rebar in it.
Okay.
So then I believe that it shoots off to like how many ever feet, I can't remember now. To another pipe and a pipe and a pipe.
Okay.
And then it cuts up.
Okay.
Into the wedge.
So are we standing on my property or theirs, the neighbors? Uh, is this a— is this a wedge right here of them? Yeah.
Yes.
Okay, so we're— where's the other pink one?
That I don't know. We see the Jeff Lucas, see, now you're into where I'm just finding stuff and I don't know what's trash.
Yeah, okay, we're early, we're early. Okay, right, but you're gonna be— you'll mark this once you find everything.
Oh yeah. Oh, oh my goodness, yes. And then we're gonna decide.
Oh, so they have— they, they're on this. You put it all on the cart, man. It's like Christmas morning right there for us now. It kind of is, isn't it? That's our sound guy for the Abundance Plus podcast. Because then we can take this snake and run it into the other room, and you only have this one. Matt, the man behind the curtain.
That's right.
We got a monitor now. We still got to work out some tweaks with that. Yeah, but that must be great. Uh, different mics that can go closer without a pop when you say P. Pop. We got a little soundboard up here. Matt's switching out the mics. This is our 1%— more like 10% improvement, more like 25% improvement. Let's see, at least. That's our— we got some good guests coming this Saturday. Grass Grazed. You won't— you don't know him yet, but you will. Yeah, I'll check him out after 3 hours of talking with somebody. You get to know him quickly. What are y'all gonna do while Jacob's here? I'm gonna work on my motorbike because we can't be having you clobbering around on us in the living room. Sometimes being home with kids— well, a lot of times it's tough. Sometimes you just gotta add in some time to do some management. That's what I'm figuring out. They're very distracting when our trainer's here, so gonna take some time. Now just wait until he gets here and let's go. No, get the kids set up. I'm gonna get the kids set up. Surveyor going up the road. I'm excited about that. What am I most excited about? The views, the access road, more pasture. I'm excited about accessing our entire property and being able to see what we got. My dad used to say, use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. I guess we gotta find, see what we got to make the best out of it, make it do.
Good. Nice and fast on it. Especially here. Good. Push up.
Way better. Good.
High kiss push up. Oh!
For lunch, looks like I'm having a meat salad. Chicken. Boston butt and some leftover steak fried up in butter. A little bit of onion in there. We just did a really fun— what do you call this thing? Summit. Online summit. This one totally different for us. Normally we're talking about gardening, farm. This was on free-range kids. She did connect it to gardening and like— yeah, we compared raising a kid to raising a plant. That was fun. So what we're going to do, Beck, rapid fire, okay? You're going to ask me a question, I'm going to ask you a question. Here they are. The name of the game, Beck, is short answers, the shortest answer possible. You know how to grow a garden and animals. How do we grow kids? With sunshine and love. What do you do to give them the right environment? Ah, you did good. Uh, because it's harder to give a short answer. Um, right environment. Oh, I create the right environment for myself and bring them along with me. Oh, oh, with so many kids, how do you give them each the love and affection they need? Rapid fire. Well, everybody needs different love and affection, and so you just give them what they need when they need it. Oh, that was fast. Um, what's hard about it? Everything. It's so hard when they're young. It's what? It's humbling when they're young. It's physically hard, and when they're older, it's mentally hard. We talked about those questions and many more for about an hour, and that's free, right? They can get the summit for free. I'm going to give you a link for it down in the description. Uh, go and check it out. It starts Friday, Friday the 25th. You can sign up now. A lot of other cool people speaking— Joel Salatin, Joel Salatin, Tom Cowan, Ben Greenfield. The 1,000 Hours Outside lady, I don't know her name, and a bunch of other good stuff. This is a different kind of summit. Probably have it going in the background while you're doing the dishes or something. It'd be great. And Holistic Healer, she was a good interview. Yeah, we enjoyed it. Okay, check it out, link in the description. Now to help Josiah, we've been working on go-kart. There are two different kinds of kids. We talked about it in that show. You know, there's the one like Jonah, we just let him go, he just wants to do it, he just wants to learn it on his own. And then Josiah tries it and then he's like, Maybe I want Pop's help, so I'm gonna help him. Looks like we might get as far as our braces for our wheels. Are you ready, bro? Yeah.
All right.
And it's 4 o'clock, time to make supper. So we'll continue another day, Josiah. Yeah, we'll just keep doing what we can. Jenna making biscuits, listening to an audiobook. All right, we just finished supper. Lily came and got me. Polly had her baby. Okay, that must be good. That must mean she's alive, meaning Polly is still alive. That's good.
Well, she knows how to be a mom. She's licking her calf.
Wow. This just happened.
I was coming down, I saw a little—
Polly, you all right? That baby is little, which is good. Look at the baby, Henry. Hope Polly's all right. Uh-oh, can stand. Oh, she's birthing her placenta right now. See it? See the purplish thing coming out?
Oh, the baby's gonna die.
No, this just happened, guys. We're talking like within 15 minutes, 20 minutes. I'm glad it's not too cold right now. It's gonna be a warm night. I'm glad this calf is small because it could have very well killed her because probably too little to be having a calf. This must have happened over the summer when I was hurt and not as on the farm as much, so there wasn't many eyes. Not the end of the world now that everybody's well. Oh, she's getting up! She's getting up! Look at that, the placenta. Let her eat that, she needs that. It gives her the, the boost. Let's see, she did good, man. What a beast.
I hope the calf can get her mouth around the teats.
Yeah.
That's how much she likes your calf, Papa.
Look, standing first time. No, good try to walk. Okay, Gideon's asking me what should we call him. I think we should call him Surprise.
Yeah, yeah, Surprise.
All right, let's go finish cleaning up. We'll get a time lapse on him, give him a break. Dadgum, you guys are On it, man. That calf's already nursing. He's running after her. That calf got a little taste of the glory. It ain't giving up now. I know she's not— she's a rookie mom.
Yeah, she is.
Yeah, and she's probably nervous with us here. Gideon, I wish we were keeping her for milking because she's got some Nice teats.
Close, so close. Come on, little guy.
There it is.
Got it! You got it, little guy. Oh, you did it, God.
I'm just gonna stand up here. She's standing for him when we're not around. She's moving a little bit, but only to nurse him. Okay, that is a very aggressive calf. I am very happy about this. We can sleep easy tonight. We got us a little beef. We got us 2 beef cows now. She's been nursing a good few minutes. Polly's been standing still. Cap's been nursing.
It's good.
All right, I think we're gonna leave. I think she does better when we're further away. See, doing just fine. Turn off the lights. They still have some evening light. I don't think it matters to the calf. We've had cows give birth in these stalls before overnight, and they just figure it out. They don't think they need the light. I'm telling you guys, it could have went so much worse. I'm so, so thankful that Polly is safe. That the calf is safe.
Maple cake, boys and girls.
Uh, it didn't— it didn't kill or hurt Polly. She's being a good mother. The calf was small, but the calf is vibrant and going after it. So thankful.
