Victor Justin Rhodes discusses child-led learning and parental non-intervention. His teenage son Jonah, 15, built a water wheel from found materials after listening to "My Side of the Mountain," showing what kids can do when given freedom to explore.
Believe it or not, the best way to teach children is not you. How did you learn this? I didn't teach him this. I'm learning this.
My friends, they told me about it.
But it's giving them free rein and freedom to explore in their creativity and do what they have interest in doing.
My teenage son— how old are you, Jonah? 15. He has built a water wheel.
For example, my son Jonah built this water wheel in our creek. All right, taking this brake off.
Oh! Oh!
I didn't help him a single bit.
Got this idea from an audiobook called My Side of the Mountain. It was a sawmill. I listened to the audiobook and I got some stuff from there. Just thought about it and made a plan in my mind and then put it together.
In this case, he didn't even look at a single video. This was just him finding scraps on the farm and just being resourceful and exploring his own interest in building something cool.
